Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Arc 11 Interlude 4: What the Nose Knows
What the Nose Knows

9th of January 2007 A.D.

Upon entering the quaint, not to say cramped living room of the Brodens' apartment to the sight of half empty pizza boxes and colourful notebooks and pencils cohabiting uneasily the casual observer might be tricked into believing that they had interrupted game night, but of course they had not, that was on Friday, this was Monday serious Alpha business, Kirby wanted to call it 'pack business' but he had relented at the boos from his 'we're not dating, honest' girlfriend.

"OK, so we know this Tiffany isn't a vampire at least, that's good," Georgia said, flipping a lock of dark blonde hair out of her face. Her tone was quite definitive.

"In spite of the fact that she got her papers from a vampire..." Her husband Billy finished, not-really-agreeing.

"It's Thomas, Thomas is cool," the mousy looking girl in the corner, helping herself to some of the pizza, cheese of course. Marci was nothing if not in on the joke at this point, rocky first impressions long buried under years of being superheroes together, a way of looking at their powers they had not shared with Harry, much like the contents of their current conversation.

"Yeah everyone gets their panties in a twist over whites, that doesn't mean you forget what they are," Andi piped up. At the outraged looks from the boys she added. "Even if you don't wear panties."

"Moving right along." There was a reason Billy was the leader and it wasn't that he was the biggest wolf. "We know Thomas has been working with or for Molly Carpenter and we know he was the one who made up Tiffany MacNeil, Harry's new girlfriend, no matter what he calls it. We know he's very protective of her and we know she smells like brimstone, which isn't quite like Carpenter's scent of..."

"Poison flame that does not warm but freezes, like a chemical fire that twists nature on its head," Andi put in, she had the most sensitive nose out of all of them. "So we have one girl that smells like bad news entangled with Dresden using the services of a vampire to get another Bad News Girl (TM) into Harry's bed and he claims they are both fine, Is anyone else getting a a Jenny kind of whiff out of this whole thing."

"Jenny's dead," Marci pointed out, motioning to Billy and Georgia with her non-pizza bearing hand.

Andi rolled her eyes and popped a peanut in her mouth. "You know what I mean, creepy hook up plots."

"Except for the part where Molly Carpenter is an actual kid, like younger than any of us," Georgia rolled her light amber eyes all the way back. "Or do you think Harry's been bamboozled into thinking her dad's a paladin as well."

"Kid younger than any of us whose having political dealings with Queen bloody Mab according to that bone-flute-satyr guy Me Georgia and Andi beat up on Tuesday," Billy said as he pulled out a old-fashioned tape recorder the others were pretty sure he was only hanging onto because he looked detective-y and rolled the literal tape.

"Oh, you want to know the story of the Slayer Queen, don't we all kinder, don't we all. But that's too rich for my blood, sure to be too rich for yours, lest it be spilled on the stone and ice. Slayer of the Wayward Sister, devourer of great akuma. What favours did she do? What lives did she cut short that we all be commanded to forget the trespass of her becoming? I know not only that it comes from above the Lady Maeve who now seeks her company. It is the Queen wo stilled the wrath of Winter and her mind you should pray never to know little wolfswelpen."

"And that was all he said, all we earned by tracking him down and making him give back the buff-juice to the football team," Blly finished.

"I still can't believe those idiots thought it was a good idea to trade their physical strength for hotness," Andi muttered under her breath, she deepened her voice into a parody of Luke the quarterback's voice. "Thought I'd just work out more to make up for it man!" She snorted. "Thought he could take more funny pills in unlabeled bottles more like. Good luck doing that when you can't even get out of bed, idiot."

The winter satyr had been as good as his word though, pretty much every girl on campus had been fawning over Luke in his brief stint as bedridden invalid, it had been a weird week on campus. The Alphas had not been overly fussed at the fact thy fey made Luke and the others less attractive than they had been when he annulled the exchange. It would go away in a turn of the moon and maybe a bit of enforced celibacy would teach them not to make deals with suspicious guys in a trenchcoat and horns.

"An Akuma for those not up on Japanese culture is a kind of demon," Billy put in. "Molly Carpenter, whatever she is now ate a demon. That is a lot more to go on than 'smells scary'."

"OK so how do you want to deal with this?" Marci asked. "Just talk to her and ask her, 'hey are you bad news or just really creepy good news'?"

"We can talk to some people at her school," Billy offered reasonably. "She's a senior, it wouldn't be that weird for some of us to chat them up."

"I'm not flirting with high school girls," Kirby said instantly, looking at Andi out of the corner of his eye.

"Who said anything about flirting?" Georgia asked with deceptive mildness that could not disguise the teasing smile on her face.

Things took a turn for the less serous from there, potentially demon eating girls left to tomorrow to handle.

OOC: So yeah, Harry being Harry didn't tell the Alphas everything, they are pretty used to that so they did not start to panic until Lash happened a few weeks ago. Harry himself was the one who told them Lash was 'new' and Thomas made her papers, thinking it would make them calm down. It did not.

[X] Someone new
-[X] Watchful Attendant of New Dreams
My apologies for quoting you @Anaja , but I needed a spring-off point for discussing this

Watchful Attendant
Dex 2, Stamina 2, Strength 2
Charisma 5, Appearance 3, Manipulation 1
Perception 5, Intelligence 5, Wits 3
Willpower 8
Soak 2 against lethal. Soak 0 against Agg.

Features
Phantasm(Emanation)
Telepathy
Technopathic Integration
Superior Poise x2
Superior Mind

Merits
Loyal
Danger Sense
Eidetic Memory
Phantasms are artificially-constructed spirits, anchored to a physical keystone. The most
common sort of phantasms, ephemera, are mostly designed to operate in one of the otherworlds,
with limited capability to physically influence the mortal world. Others are emanations, with
greater agency to act in material reality but still not natively part of it.
Emanation said:
Phantasm (Emanation): Emanations can soak lethal damage, but not aggravated.

Select either the Umbra or the Underworld. This is the emanation's native home
. It may roam
freely in its native realm, where it enjoys the natural ability to converse with the other native
denizens and to navigate without undue difficulty (in the Umbra, this amounts to having the
Charm Airt Sense, while in the Underworld it amounts to having several dots of Argos). The
phantasm may manifest in the physical world only while within one hundred yards of its
keystone, or within ten yards of its master
. It must pay one Willpower to remain manifest for a
scene. It may pay one Willpower to immediately teleport to its master's or keystone's location.

If the phantasm's master the emanation's name, the Arcana hears her words wherever it may be.
If she commands the ephemera to attend her, it may teleport to her master's location and
manifest without paying any Willpower. If the keystone is destroyed, the phantasm is also
destroyed. If the emanation is slain, it may reform one hundred years later within its keystone.
Each point of Essence fed into the keystone by its master quickens this recovery by 10 years.

If the emanation's master has learned The King and the Kingdom: The Thousand and First Hell,
the phantasm may treat its master's Hell as a keystone.

Ephemera are always otherworldly, disturbing beings with demonic features of some sort that cannot be mistaken for as human.

Its a nanny, not a bodyguard. Yog made it clear that its a nanny.
Its stat block reinforces this; it has high Charisma, but its physical stats are mediocre at best, and its soak is rather bad.
This is not a bodyguard. Dont expect it to be a bodyguard.

Because its an emanation, it cannot assume physical form for more than a scene at a time, so its a bad at its presumed job. Furthermore, it will explicitly frighten people.
Including the baby and its family.

Its a spirit, so it has most, if not all of the drawbacks of spirits in the Dresden Files.
See how even powerful spirits like Bob have limited abilities in the physical world, get injured by wards, cant cross thresholds, and are vulnerable to stuff like sunlight.

And because its an emanation, its linked to the physical keystone.
Which means that if you make a gift of its keystone to the baby, the baby cant actually give it orders. You cant trust an older child to give it orders either, as anyone with older kids can tell you; you dont let children play with fire.

And because it can only manifest physically near its master or the keystone, you cant give it to someone else and expect it to stay near the baby.

For all that they are wrong in this particular case, everything that happened is more than a little suspicious so of course they are worried.

They are not even that wrong. Molly tries to be a good person but with her new powers she is like an elephant in a china shop. For now she is carefully removing pests and managing the shop. Wanna bet what's gonna happen if she actually gets mad?
And even if she manages to stay away from becoming a walking active nuclear explosion there is still a matter of her whole world connecting to Earth. No matter how tightly she controls it there are gonna be changes and waves caused by two worlds meeting.

So everything you said after the not a bodyguard part is wrong or not true. The supernatural features just means they might have claws or glowing eyes or inhuman skin or hair like metallic gold or something. The susceptibility to boundaries is inherently okay because the technopathic power still works which means it can instantly ping us no matter where it is on Earth. Arcana are inherently loyal to their maker and can grow in capability and strength on their own Merit.

So we have an overestimation of threshold's ability to affect Spirits because it only reduces their overall power doesn't actually cause them to be functionally powerless that's not how they work. We have an over exaggeration of negative features they are just obviously Supernatural. And we have a complete down playing of any possible utility cool.

What the Nose Knows
9th of January 2007 A.D.
This is refreshingly light-hearted.
Thank you for taking time out of your holiday for this.

Interesting that they can smell supernaturals.
Even more intriguing that they can smell Lash, and Lash smells like brimstone to their noses. Denarians dont have a standout scent, so Lash might have to work on that.
Molly smelling like poison flame is more expected.

Slayer Queen eh? Rad.
Not a bad cognomen. That said, I can see why they would be worried.
Especially if Molly has that many rumors going round about her.
It did not.
Going to note:
Billy and George are the only two people that Dresden told about having Lasciel in his head. He told them during Dead Beat; he even showed them Lasciel's demon mark
Billy said, "People talk to their friends, man. No one can do everything alone. You work through it together."
I sipped some more beer. Georgia and Billy did, too. We sat in silence for maybe four or five minutes.
Then I said, "About two years ago I exposed myself to a demonic influence. A creature called Lasciel. A fallen angel. The kind of being that turns people into… into real monsters."
Georgia watched me, her eyes focused intently on my face. "Why did you do that?"
"It was in a silver coin," I said. "Whoever touched it would have been exposed. There was a child who had no idea what it was. I didn't think. I just slapped my hand over it before the child could pick it up."
Georgia nodded. "What happened?"
"I took measures to contain it," I said. "I did everything I could think of, and for a while I thought I'd been successful." I sipped more beer. "Then last year, I realized that my magic was being augmented by a demonic energy called Hellfire. That's what you smelled tonight, Billy, when I flipped the car."
"Why do you use it?" Billy asked.
I shook my head. "It isn't my choice. It just happens."
Georgia frowned. "I'm not an expert on magic, Harry, but from what I've learned that kind of power doesn't come for free."
"No. It doesn't."
"Then what was the price?" she asked.
I drew in a deep breath. Then I started peeling the leather glove off my scarred hand. "I wondered that too," I said. I slid the glove off and turned my hand over.
The scarring was the worst on the insides of my fingers and over my palm. It looked more like melted wax than human flesh, all white with flares of blue where some of the veins still survived-all except for the exact center of my palm. There, three lines of pink, healthy flesh formed a sigil vaguely suggestive of an hourglass.
"I found this there when I got burned," I said. "It's an ancient script. It's the symbol for the name of Lasciel."
Georgia drew in a slow breath and said, "Oh."
Billy looked back and forth between us. "Oh? What, oh?"
Georgia gave me a be-patient look and turned to Billy. "It's a demon mark. Like a brand, yes?" She looked at me for confirmation.
I nodded.
"He's worried that this demon, Lasciel, might be exerting some kind of control on him in ways that he cannot detect."
"Right," I said. "Everything I know tells me that I should be cut off from Lasciel. That I should be safe. But the power is still there somehow. And if the demon is influencing my thoughts, pulling my strings, I might not even be able to feel it happening."
Georgia frowned. "Do you believe that to be a probability?"
"It's too dangerous to assume anything else," I said. I held up a hand. "That's not hubris. It's just a fact. I have power. If I use it unwisely or recklessly, people could get hurt. They could die. And if Lasciel is somehow influencing me…"
"Who knows what could happen," Billy finished, his tone sober.
"Yeah."
"Damn," Billy said.
We all took a sip of beer.
"I'm worried," I said. "I haven't been able to find any answers. I've gone through spell after spell. Rites, ceremonies, I've tried everything. It won't go away."
"Jesus," Billy breathed.
"An influence like this is detectable, and against the Laws of Magic. If the Wardens found out and pushed a trial on me, it might be enough to get me executed. And if I get near the Knight of the Cross I told you about, he'll be able to feel it on me. I don't know how he'd react. What he would think."
I swallowed.
"I'm scared."

Georgia touched my arm briefly, then said, "You shouldn't be so hard on yourself, Harry. I know you well enough to know that you would never want that kind of power, much less abuse it."
"If some part of me didn't want it," I asked, "why didn't I pick up the kid instead of Lasciel's coin?"
A heavy silence settled over the kitchen.
"You've been friends to me. Stuck it out by me when times were rough," I said a moment later. "You've made me welcome in your home. In your life. You're good people. I'm sorry I haven't been more open with you."
"Is that what tonight was about?" Billy asked. "The demon?"
"No," I said. "Tonight was different. And I can't tell you about it."
"If you're trying to protect us…" Billy began.
"I'm not protecting you," I said. "I'm protecting someone else. If I'm seen with you, it could get them badly hurt. Maybe even killed."
"I don't understand. I want to help…" Billy said.
Georgia put her hand over Billy's. He glanced at her, flushed, and then closed his mouth.
I nodded and finished the beer. "I need you to trust me for a little while. I'm sorry. But the faster I'm out of here, the better."
"How can we help?" Georgia asked.
"Just knowing that you want to is a help," I told her. "But that's almost the only thing you can do. For now, at least."
"Almost the only thing?"
I nodded. "If I could get something to eat, and maybe a ride back to my car, I'd be obliged."
"We can do that," Billy said.
"Thank you,"I said.

He also told Butters, but a lot more vaguely and in less detail.

This is refreshingly light-hearted.

Even more intriguing that they can smell Lash, and Lash smells like brimstone to their noses. Denarians dont have a standout scent, so Lash might have to work on that.

For what it's worth Denarians in Apocalyptic form do smell, even more than Lash, they can hardly do otherwise given how much power they have and how the world groans under their tread. They smell like nothing normally since they are using the host's mortal soul as a veil. Lash obviously does not have this option, she is what she is, in or out of Apocalyptic form.

1) I literally quoted it for you:
Ephemera are always otherworldly, disturbing beings with demonic features of some sort that cannot be mistaken for as human.

2)We can already HMP cellphones and electronic devices.
If that was what we wanted, we'd simply HMP a baby monitor or a cellphone, not build an arcana.
We're doing this already anyway.

3)Thats flatout not true.
Even fucking Whampires who cross thresholds and wards without invitation can get their inner demon depowered so hard that mortals can whip their ass; we see it happen to Elise Raith in Ghost Story when Murphy beats her ass.

Not to mention when Dresden sent Bob out to try to spy on Marcone after he hired Gard and the peripheral wards ripped him up so badly he was literally dripping spiritual body mass as he limped back.

Gosh darn it Harry, why you gotta be like this-

For all Harry gets upset when he's kept in the dark (despite never, y'know, asking people or Bob about shit), he sure likes to keep others in the dark even more.

Seriously, this is why the White Council threw him out in canon; hanging out with super sketchy people while not giving any reasonable explanation to his actual friends. Come on!

But yeah, while the Alphas are kinda minor players, they do have a decent understanding of the local supernatural scene. Not great, clearly, but compared to Molly even Dresden isn't playing at the same level.

I dunno if I want to use AP to reach out but if they come to us there shouldn't be an issue with reciprocating and reassuring them we're on the level.

-Be not afraid,- said in unison bronze statue burning with green infernal flames and a marble statue of unearthly beauty shining with inner light.

And that's assuming Alphas don't find Molly in the moment when she is slurping a piece of Nemesis or some demons from Hell.

There's merit on both sides.

A lot of the secrets Harry keeps are not his to tell. He keeps THEIR secrets, just like he keeps the secrets of others.
And like I quoted, he's told Billy and George more about this than he's told anyone else. He didnt even tell his brother Thomas about Lasciel's Coin, but he told them. The White Council would have told them less.

The Alphas arent strictly speaking entitled to Molly's secrets. And they arent entitled to Lash's either.
The most Harry can in good faith do is what he's already done, and maybe arrange a meeting.

Harry is for all his gripes at the Council, a product of Council training. More so than most in fact given who his master was and one of the things the council teaches is that you have a responsibility to protect people from knowledge that could hurt them, if not through action than at the very least by silence. At the end of the day the White Council is a secret society.

That said Harry, the man who hands out 'introduction to magic pamphlets', containing simplified but nonetheless accurate information, to interested clients is very much on the freedom of information end of the White Council spectrum. That he is even talking to the Alphas at all is unusual... and also part of the reason why he is still alive (See Dead Beat).

Harry is also (to our knowledge) exposed to way more crazy shit than anyone with his level of mental protection (it is noted that younger wizards are more vulnerable which is why Peabody turned them into puppets when he couldn't do so for older wizards). They may be others secrets but he is a giant flashing COMPROMISED sign and does nothing to alleviate some rather reasonable concerns. Add in that he is a Starborn and thus critically important to anything Outsider related in the long term and the WC understandably freaks out.

This is fair; I just got trauma flashbacks to how dumb Harry was being in Peace Talks when he refused to tell Carlos jack shit, despite Carlos having proven himself an amazing and trustworthy friend who followed him into battle and kept his really sketchy secrets.

Who Harry refused to explain jack shit over the course of the entire book and the next one, to the point Carlos rightfully lost all trust in him.

Seeing hints of that here just got me physically recoiling, is all.

The baby won't be disturbed by something it gets used to from early on.

That's pretty much how humans work.

The nanny could look like any horror-movie monster, for someone that grew up with that looking over their shoulder, it would be normal.
Also he is still over stating it because disturbing means worrying, troubling or alarming like say obvious natural claws on a human or inhuman skin color or natural metallic hair.

Fair.Couple points worth noting:
1) The vast majority of the junior Wardens in the White Council were mentally compromised by Peabody.
Captain-Commander Luccio was mentally compromised by Peabody. And he knows there's still Black Council agents on the Council. And he's seen Nemesis and company straight up take big players like Cat Sith over.

There are real reasons for him to be reticent about information, just as there are for Carlos to be suspicious and curious.

2) The White Council, or at least the Senior Council, is playing games by making a big show of throwing him out.
They deliberately turned him loose so they can disavow responsibility.
Not because they dont have a good idea what Mab's Knight is going to be doing

There's secrets around him that they and others(Mab, Odin) know and havent shared.

3)Dresden has untreated PTSD at that point in time.
Nowhere as bad as it was after the events of Battle Grounds, or even as bad as it was after Grave Peril.

However, its roughly 3 years IC between Changes and Battle Grounds.

In that time period, he'd helped sacrifice the mother of his child in a magic ritual, arranged his own suicide, come back from the dead, seen another friend(Lily)get murdered and seen his apprentice and daughter of a close friend get shanghaied as Winter Lady. And thats on top of the previous decade of trauma.

This was also around the same time his brother had tried to assassinate the svartalfar head of state, too.
He wasnt precisely playing with a full deck.
The baby won't be disturbed by something it gets used to from early on.That's pretty much how humans work.

Yup, usually for mundane features.
Im not sure thats true in-setting for supernatural features.

Furthermore, I dont think we actually want a baby to associate otherworldly + disturbing with safety as its baseline.
Especially when there's a lot of other things running around the setting that might share features that can be characterized the same way but which are generally not benign.

Those instincts exist for a reason.

It says that the features are disturbing not that they would cause supernatural dread, I'd say you would be looking at clearly inhuman features, but not even necessary unpleasant to look at, after all you can make the Emanation high appearance if you like. It does not say something like Set Appearance to 0, which this system does do for things like Nosferatu and werewolves in Crinos which have supernatural dread.

To restate: If the Solars could do it, even on a small scale, one would have tried.
He/she/they doesnt have to replicate the totality of Creation solo to build a proof of concept. To build a city-sized area, for example. That would be the basic step I would expect from people with the resources of First Age Solars.

The fact that they went with expanding Creation's borders instead speaks volumes to me.
The closest thing we see is the Creation city with a bunch of reality engines in the Wyld whose population had died out and been replaced by Raksha cosplaying as mortals.
That's not what we were talking about at all. Your statements were consistently about how there were no economic constraints on Solar actions. That's plain wrong.
