Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Mask of Yomi is kind of a waste on the guy who looks like a rotting corpse to the point where you might mistake him for Black Court.
A Yin-imbalanced kueijin who gets too much sun exposure could suffer the same thing.
Its not a marker for Yomi King allegiance.
And if said kueijin was turned and left in place as an agent to subvert a court or just to spy, the Mask of Yomi would be critical.

I assume that when he made the arrangments, his Appearance was higher.
The permanent sun damage that dropped his Appearance would have occurred after his Fall.
Possibly when he was out doing his master's will. Or even as a punishment for failure.

Mask of Yomi also hides what non-obvious Investments you have from fellow akuma.
Who range from rivals for the favor of the Yama King that owns you, servants of other Yama Kings and thus potential hostiles, and outright enemies.
Denying them free looks at one's capabilities might save an akuma punishment due to failure, or death.

Arc 6 Post 33: Break of Dark
Break of Dark

3nd of October 2006 A.D.

Out of the corner of your eye, out of your many, many eyes you see the space between you and the snipers flash like shards of glass razor thin floating in the air, no doubt throwing a lot more light into the sun blind eyes of the Akuma than in yours. Wards or no it's going to make them squirm. As for the one before you, he does not flinch, nor turn his head, nor even twitch at the rattle of disciplined shots from the mercenaries as the take up firing positions to cover you.

He's moving faster, he's moving a lot faster now, more than even Eiko in the midst of her act the air itself boomsas iron hard limbs pass through it sheers as the sword passes through it. That is because it's literally supersonic, some corer of your mind babbles. As counter you aren't as fast, nowhere near it, but you are more skilled than this thing that had been alive for centuries uncounted, you know when he will act before he does, you faint and you parry, not every blow but enough that what gets through is not enough to do more than scratch your armor.

You wonder if this is what dad feels like when he is dueling one of the Denarians, knowing that the foe before him should outmatch him by age and the power of their dark master and yet matching them blow for blow.

Turning your sword abruptly you parry not with the edge but with your stone-encased fists. Maybe this time...

Without warning there's a blast to your left and above to your left and above. Einherjar doing Odin's work smashing open the building from which you have been taking fire with a morter shot. Though there aren't any flames like a Hollywood movie the gout of ash and black smoke billowing from the hole in the roof is satisfying to watch.

"I wonder at the wisdom of having them fire betwixt the duel," Usum muses, his previous worry giving way to cool analyses. "We appear to be better armored than our foe."

That might not be the worst idea in the world, you admit reluctantly. Trying to scab the Voice of Kakuri is like prying though a wall made up of swords only to then try to carve a hole though concrete. Scant comfort that he seems to be having as little luck as you, or that he has not tried to wrap you in the coils of nihilus again. He probably can't do that, not with having let out the fury of Yomi, only the demon arts are his to wield now.

"Path is not open. Over. Attempt failed Repeat, path is not open..." Clippy repays of her own volition from the Monoc communication network.

The akuma's mockery of a smile grows larger: "You shall tire child and I shall not. I am the will of one who has judged your kind for years beyond count, fight of flee it matters not. In the end all shall fall under his Hand."

"Is that what you tell yourself when the day-sleep takes you, that we are all doomed to the cesspool you willingly crawled back into?" you laugh, hoping to goat him into more reckless attacks.

Alas you may as well have have been trying to taunt an avalanche into shifting its path for all the good it does. You decide to be a bit more defensive, maybe you can goat him into overcompensating... and then he commits just enough to swing round you and cut you in the back of the knee with a lighting fast back stroke Fortunately your hamstrings area about as easy to sever as steel chords. Chanting sweets again as Gard draws as close as she is able to the duel and in your mind's eye you see a rune that was old when the first longship was set to water, dagaz, the rune of day, and bane to those who are bound to darkness' embrace

Rune-bound blessing active (All DCs against beings which shun the sun -1)

As the akuma narrows its ruined eyes upon you it seems that good luck comes in pairs, for you do not need Clippy to give a sign of Lydia's success. You hear her voice in the very fabric of the veil shakes...

"Mae'r drws yn egwyl"

And breaks asunder.

You do not have time to wonder what might be on the other side, you decide to go all out, trust your armor to take the blows and carge out his black heart. And then he still... fucking... parries.

Someone is screaming in sheer blinding rage and that cannot possibly be you because you still have perfect control of yourself, you see with perfect clarity, you move with perfect focus. And yet it's not that be moves any slower, nor with any less skill, it is that like with his lack of response to your taunt he moves with singular unshakable purpose and that itself is... predictable. With one final leap, fifteen feet in the air, one sweep of your sword you take not the heart of the Will of Kakuri, but his head.

Akuma takes 11 Damage -> Slain

The same grasping will that had extinguished his shadow reaches out to consume and though you gain no more essence for it satisfaction wells within at the knowledge he will never again walk the halls of its master and whatever remnant of the person it had been will be at peace.

Will of Kakuri Soul Killed

You try very hard not to think of the fact it tastes like your favorite chocolate ice cream.

Regain 2 Essence -> Now at 7/12

As cheers erupt from behind you, mostly from the trio of vampires, though Odin's warriors proffer their congratulations you wonder for the first time what it must have looked like to see you fight an invisible foe. Before you can ask you are greeted with the sight of your dad and Harry running out of a ragged hole in the world ringed with silver flame. Both of them are covered in what you can only describe as demon gunk, though in Harry's case it's more... crispy and your dad is carrying a familiar man in his arms. Looks like J get's a happy ending as well

"I did it, it's dead!" you shout. More than dead, you think but don't add aloud. That is not a power you want bandied around. "We need to clar out the rest of them, save the Jade Dogs..."

"Best do it fast," Murphy warns, eyes shining with relief as she looks at Harry... and other emotions you would rather not think about.

Shaking off the reminder of problems you cannot stab you turn to "Billy, Andrea, are you alright?"

"Are we..." the lanky-haired vampire boggles. "Boss are you alright? What the fuck was that?"

Andrea meanwhile had moved next to the still distinctly demonic looking corpse of the greater akuma, you guess that shape is as true as the other for its ilk and so would not change back, and picks up his sword.

"Hell yeah this thing is strong!" she says, almost at the same time as Harry telling her not to touch. She seems fine though maybe she would be less sanguine about it if her demon weren't riding so close to the surface, wrapping her lifeforce in its coils

What do you do about the Greater Akuma's remains

[] [SWORD] Claim it, maybe you can reforge it

[] [SWORD] Let Harry destroy it

[] [SWORD] Gift it to Monoc for Gard's help in the fight

[] [SWORD] Write in

[] [BODY] Claim it, it might be a little creepy, but having eaten his soul it would be a bit silly to be squeamish about the body

Well that was ultimatly pretty easy anyway.
1. Fine so far, was that one roll where we exploded on successes and he sucked at soaking, or the culmination of multiple rounds?

[X] [SWORD] Claim it, maybe you can reforge it

2. It's running on Chi, so maybe it can run on Lydia's Essence?
Her flavor is pretty similar to Yin-Chi, Iron and Death.

3. Different question, did any of the hostile minions survive this?
Wan Kuei can be pretty tough, with their little death before the real one.

4. Maybe we could flip some, unless Emma-O though all of them were worth doing the full pact with and is keeping their souls in a jar.

Edit: Numbers added to questions for convenience.

Hey DP, does claiming the body open the possibility of stuffing and mounting it at the entrance of our base as a warning?

That was 17 hits into 5 enemy parry leading to a total of 19 Damage. He soaked very well with 8 successes, but those rolls would have eviscerated a tank.

Not that you have encountered so far other than the possessed girl, but at this point taking prisoners is easier

Molly would have to go through some.. character development to get there, but in theory yes. :V

We should definitely take both - those are very potent foci for the Crown to look into Emma-O's mind. And if we want to gift the sword to Gard / Odin to settle part of the debt, better do it after we reforge it.

It's our operation, and our loot.

And now all that's left is the fallout and the loot.
The akuma's mockery of a smile grows larger: "You shall tire child and I shall not.
Actually, you will get soul-eaten by us, and we'll end this fight with just over half of a tank left. Overconfident to the end, especially considering just how badly we owned him that he couldn't even scratch us.

Good to see just how scary we are that we can 1v1 something like that going all out in prepared ground with only a couple rounds of prep time and still perma-kill it easily without taking a scratch. And we have enough witnesses to our deed to spread the word that we are not to be messed with lightly. After all, our mid-term goal is being known as strong enough to not be worth the trouble. (Our long-term goal, obviously, is "be an E5 Solaroid that sends Denarians running in fear and breaks the power curve of the setting," but that's a ways off, still.)
Umm, technically 19, since we ignore 1s on Melee rolls due to it being a key ability. Not that it changes the end result, but I figured I would remind you.

But yeah, Molly is scary. This is the first pebble in the avalanche that is the rest of the world figuring that out.

And on a funny note, what do you think Emma-O's face is going to look like when he realizes we ate his servant's soul straight out of his vaults?

The real question is what he will do now.

He might take his losses as a lesson and stay away.
But that would be less than usual for a Yama King. Greed is a unifying factor of their various themes after all, or they wouldn't have become Yama Kings in the first place, but rather provided the proper afterlife from which souls can move on, as intended.

He certainly has more Akuma, but I don't think he'd be willing to risk them in a small warparty like this again and he propably can't afford to send an army to Chicago without loosing one of his ongoing wars elsewhere.

So if he does go further after us, he might have to think outside the box.

And on a funny note, what do you think Emma-O's face is going to look like when he realizes we ate his servant's soul straight out of his vaults?
Funnily enough, Emma-O can now legitimately call us thief. We stole his property - Greater Akuma's soul.
And we have enough witnesses to our deed to spread the word that we are not to be messed with lightly.
If nothing else, I suspect that we'll get a suggestion to sign the damn Accords as a freeholding lord soonish.

You try very hard not to think of the fact it tastes like your favorite chocolate ice cream.

Thank goodness the Akuma is dead; sure we beat it in a sword fight, but only because we spent considerable effort screwing with its business first.

Well that was ultimatly pretty easy anyway.
Worth considering that this fight would have been a lot worse without some specific counters on our side. If we had anything other than the crown of eyes this would have been nearly unworkable.

nom nom nom 🤤

This raises an important question; will all of the souls we devour taste like chocolate ice cream, or do they come in different flavors depending on their nature? Are they all desserts?

I wonder what type of souls would taste spicy?

"You shall tire child and I shall not. I am the will of one who has judged your kind for years beyond count, fight of flee it matters not. In the end all shall fall under his Hand."

We won't tire before you if you're dead before it, and please, we are the kind of thing that will spank the Yama king you serve given time, do not presume you are greater just because you bowed to a pale imitation of those who made the worlds.

he moves with singular unshakable purpose and that itself is... predictable.

Mechanical precision can be your death when the opponent can exploit it.

With one final leap, fifteen feet in the air, one sweep of your sword you take not the heart of the Will of Kakuri, but his head.

For a guy who boasted about his inevitability, he got two shotted, with us using no essence past the beginning of the fight, where is your god now, pathetic wretch?

though in Harry's case it's more... crispy

The demon was already on fire when he got there, honest!

How else would they get you to indulge? :V

Won't change much since we already overkilled him quite hard, but I spy a one in the damage roll, is it a thing where we ignore them or not? Because if it is we did one more damage. :V

Umm, technically 19, since we ignore 1s on Melee rolls due to it being a key ability. Not that it changes the end result, but I figured I would remind you.

Oh wait, so even more than one more damage potentially. :V

Our long-term goal, obviously, is "be an E5 Solaroid that sends Denarians running in fear and breaks the power curve of the setting," but that's a ways off, still.

Essence 5? Stopping there is for quitters! I want to have Molly be a devil tiger when she grows up!

And on a funny note, what do you think Emma-O's face is going to look like when he realizes we ate his servant's soul straight out of his vaults?

Worth considering that this fight would have been a lot worse without some specific counters on our side. If we had anything other than the crown of eyes this would have been nearly unworkable.

For example, we have no idea how effective their ritual would've been, and we would have had to fight with them having hostages under their control instead of in the process of being rescued, very different paradigm.

I think we need to use the exp of this adventure and use to max our crafting, get the solar crafting charm and craft ourselves city god.

These moments where everything comes together are the reasons I read this quest for. I loved this, and while I'm sure it will have some political ramifications I'm excited to see where we go next.

So, how much xp are we getting for this, given the gigantic middle finger we gave to a Yama King?

Also @DragonParadox Did we hit E3? This would be a good place to do that. Thematic too, to ascend kn the eve of her great victory.

I'm of two minds on the fate of the sword and corpse.

On one hand, that's our loot. We killed its owner fair and square, and we're probably going to be able to do something neat and/or useful with it later.

On the other hand, that shit is likely the supernatural equivalent to weapons grade plutonium, and not the fun kind like Molly's nuclear hatefire. Even if we can do something with it, safe containment until then could be an issue. I don't know enough about the system to say how dangerous the sword and corpse are just lying around somewhere.

Do we need to keep them sealed in an active magic circle? A lead-lined vault? Can Emma-O use them for targeting or information gathering purposes?
Okay, next step: Party with the Einherjers, fighting in the morning and drinking in the evening is their lifestyle after all.
Hopefully without Michael playing chaperone.

Everyone wants a Knight of the Cross at their side when it's time to throw down with nasty supernatural shit, but when it comes time for the follow-up debauchery and excessive drinking, they might be a bit of a downer.

Another thing here; does Gard have the senses to see what we just did to the Akuma? We've given away a lot of secrets to her lately just having her around.

Not sure if we're better off looking for alternative mercs to mix into things so she has less data to work with, or to continue using Odin's people to minimize the breadth of our exposure.

On that subject, wizards have magical senses other than the sight and Harry was on this side of the gauntlet when Moly decided to have a snack. What are the odds that he picked up on something?
We'd probably resort to them firing the mortar at our location, which would play hell with his invisibility.
It had super speed, and we have maybe three people who could reliably handle that. Bombardment seems like it would have been fairly ineffective and quickly silenced.
And on a funny note, what do you think Emma-O's face is going to look like when he realizes we ate his servant's soul straight out of his vaults?
Personally I'm hoping that it made a pointless but throughly annoying mess in his soul vault.

Molly just switched to solid food, so she's probably still a messy eater. :V

Just imagine him stepping inside and getting soul juice all over his feet.

Eiko's probably also going to need a stiff drink too, since she was at our mercy after our play fight ended.

It's one thing to know we might have betrayed and killed her, it's another to think we could have eaten her soul. She thought she was playing with Scrappy Doo when she was actually putting her head in cocaine bear's mouth.
