Chapter 92 - Warmth

As you step across the roof to retrieve the fallen Grief Seed, Kyoko's disguise reasserts itself. Burning golden rings and symbols flare around the towering Distortion before collapsing inwards, compressing her down into a humanoid shape before a final flash returns the guise of normalcy. As you pick the Seed up off the ground, Kyoko shoots you a disconcerted look.

"Feels weird seeing a Grief Seed and just… not needing it anymore. Those things were basically our lifeblood back then, and now I can just… leave it."

"Well, Mami and Sayaka still need them. At least until I find some way to circumvent that, too."

You tuck away Angelina's Grief Seed in a pocket and seat yourself on a ventilation tube. Fighting like that took more out of you than expected. You can still feel the aching of your bones fade away as you let your body relax. It takes longer than you'd like for the pain to recede. Perhaps a concerning amount of time. You'll need to remember not to push yourself so far in the future unless necessary.

"Speaking of Mami, there's something I'd like to ask you about. You've known her longer than anyone else" you ask.

Kyoko looks away in shame, energy bleeding out of her body. "Fat lot of good I did, though. Spent most of that time dragging her down and then left."

"None of that, now." you chide. "Mami's been a lot happier since you came back. You make her life better, not worse. You're a good person, and I won't have anyone saying otherwise. Not even you."

Kyoko stares at you, taken off-guard by your sudden sternness. She blinks, then nods slowly. With that resolved, you proceed with the original question.

"But that's besides the point. I was going to ask about Witches."

Kyoko's confusion intensifies, prompting you to elaborate.

"I mean about how Magical Girls give birth to Witches. She's going to find out at some point, and I'd like to control the circumstances when it happens. To make sure to lessen the impact as much as I can."

Kyoko looks down contemplatively, then shakes her head. "I don't think telling her would be a good idea any time soon. If there was ever somebody who tried to live up to the ideal of a 'perfect' Magical Girl, it was Mami. Learning that it was a trick the whole time… it wouldn't be good." She walks over and flops forwards across the vent tube next to you, feet dangling. It's a start reminder of just how small Kyoko actually is. None of your kids act like it, but they are children. Children preyed upon by a cold, emotionless beast that sees them only as resources. "Give her some time to get used to things. I can help you try and make things better for her. I still owe you that much, at least. Once everything's stable, then we can decide how to break the news. Until then… she'll be better off not knowing the truth."

"We might not have that kind of time." you respond. Kyoko just sighs.

———————————————

The two of you return to the apartment, receiving a very warm welcome from your kids for the second time today. Stories are shared about the hunt, with Kyoko downplaying her contributions and you doing the opposite. It creates a weird sort of balance, where the resulting story is quite close to the actual course of events.

Dinner is prepared and served. Mostly to help Kyoko's peace of mind, you let Mami take the lead in preparations. The end result is a flawlessly-cooked lasagna that lasts nowhere near as long as you'd like. Dinner conversation is muted, and you have to make a constant effort to keep people talking, but it's still a nice experience. Yuma certainly helps, given she simply doesn't have the necessary context to experience the same awkwardness as everybody else.

After dinner Mami brings out a game console, and a rather new one at that. Distantly, you wonder what Mami's primary source of income is. She clearly has a large amount of money to live in such conditions and be so well-supplied, but between school and Magical Girl duties she doesn't have enough free time for a job. Maybe life insurance or an inheritance?

Mami picks out a few different first-person shooters, which she is unsurprisingly good at. More interesting is Kyoko, who while not as good as Mami is clearly experienced with a few of these games. Your enhanced senses let you keep up rather easily despite your comparative lack of experience, and Yuma is happy just to be included. The two Magical Girls end up teaming up to hunt you, which you aren't going to contradict despite it being technically against the rules. While the three of you duel, Yuma performs the actual objective and ends up winning.

By the time the sun has finally fallen to the horizon, the sound of laughter echoes out from the cozy apartment.

Der Freischütz's Sapling - Observation Level 2/3
Porccubus' Sapling - Observation Level 2/3

The patrol members include You, Mami, Kyoko, Sayaka, and Homura & Madoka. If you would like, you can put everyone in one patrol team, but that will prevent you from covering as large of an area. For the sake of my sanity, please structure all votes as plans.

Short chapter this time, but that's just how it goes. I'll throw in a surprise in the near future if possible to make it up to you.

I give Homura good odds of ignoring any group that doesn't involve her hanging out with Madoka anyway, and Madoka with Kyoko is probably a terrible idea.

You'll need to remember not to push yourself so far in the future unless necessary.

Meanwhile, The Adult who tells lies is there, making sure we'll need to.

. Children preyed upon by a cold, emotionless beast that sees them only as resources.

Is that our first Big Bird thought? I think this is our first Big Bird thought.

Yuma certainly helps, given she simply doesn't have the necessary context to experience the same awkwardness as everybody else.

I wouldn't be so sure on her not being able to pick up on it, it's just that she's also perfectly able to go past it to help her loved ones.

Maybe life insurance or an inheritance?

Probably.

I'll throw in a surprise in the near future if possible to make it up to you.

The question is, would it be that kind of surprise:

That kind of surprise:

That kind of surprise:

Or that kind of surprise:

As for the team, I think we really ought to have a team made up of us, Homura and Madoka, these two needs to be talked to, we have ignored Madoka for a little too long for my taste, and Homura would be happy in this team.

In short:

[x] Plan: Social meetings
-[x] Team one
--[x] Madoka, Homura, You
-[x] Team two
--[x] Kyouko, Sayaka, Mami

Kyouko with Mami is good, since it allows Mami to work on getting closer to her, Sayaka is more reasonable here so should be able to talk with them, and Mami will defend Kyouko if Sayaka begins telling bad things about her, which I doubt, she was there for NT, she probably can understand that Kyouko is not well.

I also wants us to be alone with Madoka and Homura so that we can discuss intimate things with them, which is not happening if we take Kyouko.

This is a decent distribution in terms of combat power. We mostly have good compatibility with Kyoko and Sayaka works well in any team due to the nature of her desire. And I want to talk to Sayaka because, besides Distortion, she's the one whose reaction to everything that's going on I'm most worried about.

I'm going with this, we really haven't talked to Sayaka at all since Nothing There.

But putting Kyoko on a team with anyone but X is asking for troubles.
Mami might protest not being able to fight alongside her returning friend. Kyoko would try hard to suppress her full incineration aura if she is going to be working with Mami, and we would want Mami and Kyoko having time to talk with each other to help start working out their issues. Kyoko going all "I am fire, burn those who dare to care for me" is a major risk, but I feel she will eventually have to learn to work with others who are not immortal abnormalities anyway if she is to overcome her distorted mindset of always hurting loved ones.

The patrol members include You, Mami, Kyoko, Sayaka, and Homura & Madoka.
I wonder how we're going to convince Homura to allow us to take Madoka as a noncombatant on patrol, or if that's even desirable. I get that Madoka needs to feel useful, but this action seems both risky and not all that useful.

Hey:
For the sake of my sanity, please structure all votes as plans.

Plan votes only, makes the tally easier.

And why us with Kyouko again? or even Sayaka? Yes, we haven't been much with Sayaka since NT, but Madoka has been neglected way more, and she's much more of a ticking time bomb as Sayaka is right now, we really, really, really need to have a talk with her, and including Homura works because she will probably ends up being part of what we talk about anyway.

If we continue like that, don't be surprised if the next time we see Madoka she has contracted with a wish to be helpful or something.

Also, we'll need to talk with Hitomi too, and talking with Madoka about how to approach her would be good, make her fell useful, and doing so will allows us to prepare a little on telling the girls' parents in the future.

Edit:

I wonder how we're going to convince Homura to allow us to take Madoka as a noncombatant on patrol, or if that's even desirable. I get that Madoka needs to feel useful, but this action seems both risky and not all that useful

Well, my plan to have us and Homura with her would absolutely help with that, taking her with both our best team fighters (Kyouko is very much not a team player) ought to make her way more safe, and Homura would refuse to go in a team without Madoka anyway.

Honestly speaking, letting Kyoko go out without our supervision have me scared.

Because I got burnt badly before, the idea of letting the girls handle Kyoko without supervision is...I don't like it.

Being even just scalding heat is bad enough. Let alone having your skin burned.

Oh, thanks for bringing this to my attention. @Nottheunmaker , can I ask you to add the plan's name to match the format requested by the author?

The main reason why I prefer talking to Sayaka over talking to Madoka is I don't think talking to Madoka can be just casually done while on patrol. We must find time to talk to her and Homura thoroughly, without distractions. There are many things that we need to discuss.

She needs to see that we can let her be without our constant supervision, Mami and Sayaka actually are a good team to help with that, Mami is a veteran, meaning that she can take care of things without too much help, reducing the amount of power Kyouko would need and so the amount of damages she inflicts on the environment, Sayaka is a healer/Buffer, she can take care of little burns, and her buffing Mami will amplify my previous point. Plus Mami is a long range fighter, she can stay away from the close combat fighter that is Kyouko and reduce the burns even more that way.

We have been neglecting Madoka way too much, need to talk to her as alone as possible as soon as possible and cannot have her in the same team as Kyouko given her own squishiness, so my team composition is ideal for all our objectives:

-As I said, Mami and Sayaka are perfectly able to work with Kyouko.

-Mami and Kyouko would benefit from spending some time with each other again, Sayaka will be a little of a third wheel here, but she ought to have questions to Kyouko about being another veteran, so can contribute to the conversation.

-Homura will refuse any team without her and Madoka together.

-Homura will want Madoka to be safe, no team safer than ours.

-We need to talk with Madoka anyway, so putting her and Homura in our team is logical.

That is a valid concern, I think we can, you think it won't be enough, we both agree that it will need to happen soon, so let the plan who convince the most voters win and we'll talk to Madoka after this hunt if mine doesn't.

What enemies can be expected? besides witches, there's the adult and their magical girls, Not!argalia... judgement bird and/or silent girl? anyone I'm missing?

And can the current team comps survive an encounter with any of them?

The Not!puppeteer is up and about. So we might meet some MG puppets soon.

[X] Plan: Swords, spears and awkward conversations.

I like this plan. So I'm going for it. Until I see with my own eyes that Kyoko can handle working with someone else other than X, I won't just "Test her" like that.

You dont fear the flame until you get scarred by it.

We got a chance to see how volatile Kyoko is with X, where she burn X's skin, and as I said before, the girls are lot more fragile than X.

You only need water boiling heat to immediately put a normal human into a desperate death roll of pain and suffering.

And thats very easy for Kyoko to cause accidentally.

We just got some progress with her done. We don't need to have it be a 1 step forward, 2 steps back because she got careless with Mami and left both Sayaka and Mami scalded. They probably would be fine with Sayaka's buffs. But Kyoko's mental state wouldn't.

X got off scot free because she had 3 super healing factors (Mimicry, Blue Star, and Pinks) alongside being stupidly resistant to pain because shes the queen of white damage. Mami and Sayaka aren't as resilient.

As a mom, the thought of letting the kids play with fire like that is...quite frankly, every bones in my body goes into attack mode just thinking about it.

Madoka can wait. Let Mami handle her and Homura.

This team has the best vibes for me, and despite the danger of kyouko, homura still worries me more.

Kyoko can turn the fire aura off, she just didn't during Angelina's Barrier because you didn't bring it up.

This is one of the reasons why I am not afraid of having her with Sayaka and Mami, she would do her best to not burn them anyway, but the fact is that she can make it so that it isn't really a problem in the first place.

Having Mami, her old pupil, and her new one alone and able to talk without our presence is why I think we should let it happen. In addition to still having to talk to Madoka and her being safest with us, which will make Homura happier.

In the spirit of being not a helicopter mom...I will change my vote.

I still dont like it...But...ugh. I not just dont like it, I hate it.

Let's compare to the currently winning roster:
1. Madoka, Homura, X
2. Kyouko, Sayaka, Mami

Adult is probably still holed up in her city, and her meguca servants shouldn't be a problem. X has Mimicry, and NT is a proven matchup against meguca. Kyoko and Mami both have experience with meguca fighting.

Not!Puppeteer, again not likely to directly show his face at this stage. Meguca puppets could be troublesome, but we can focus on cutting their strings.

Not!Argalia, it's unclear whether his ranged damage immunity comes entirely from parrying bullets, but let's assume normal ranged attacks from Mami or Homura won't cut it. X + time stop tricks can still deal with him, while team 2 would probably struggle. Both teams have distortions, so maybe he would be intrigued and not immediately attack.

Judgment Bird can likely hang Madoka, Mami, and Sayaka in a couple attacks. No idea what its effect on Homura and Kyoko would be. In any case X would need to be called in. Though will this lead to a Black Forest event?

Silent Girl is currently suspected to be a fourth Aleph pinnacle. The guilt will probably seriously fuck up Mami, Kyoko, and Homura if not kill them outright. DoSaM breach anyone?

The last report from Angela mentioned two other released abnormalities of note (though they might be lurking in witch barriers instead of out and about):
Snow Queen - Should be relatively easy to spot and avoid. Not sure if any fight would immediately activate the gimmick about 1 person having to free their friends. If in barrier then we're definitely getting the gimmick.

Burrowing Heaven - Oh god why. Once it's in sight it should be easy but I can't think of a way to defend if it suddenly teleports in to skewer people.

I do want X to talk to Madoka, but I'm pretty sure she'll just clam up in Homura's presence like usual. It needs to be a dedicated action, maybe even involving her parents.

By the way, wasn't Apocalypse Bird (or more specifically The Beast) described as "Devouring the Sun and Moon"?
Should we be worried about that, considering what our true name is?
