Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

I like Ruth. She seems like good minion material if she lives long enough for us to learn the wish Charm.
Assuming there are any Merits it can grant that deal with the age problem? If so, I think there is a great potential source of minions just waiting for us to exploit.
Yes, there's Merits for it, like Unaging IIRC. But she's 84. Let her enjoy her retirement.
There's entire communities of ghouls and whampires in Chicago's Undertown, as well as the population of our Hell once we get it.
We're really not short of minion candidates.

Sure, we have alternative minion sources, but being able to restore youth and/or longevity to the elderly is a great incentive for quality recruits. There are a lot of old people who have spent their lives mastering skills, gaining knowledge, making valuable contacts (political, industrial, financial, academic, etc.), amassing wealth, etc.

I'm not saying we should just raid the nearest retirement home for disposable cannon fodder, but that we shouldn't overlook potential because it's near its expiration date.

84 in 2006 means that she was born in 1922. Means that she could well be a WW2 veteran. In fact, even if she's not, looking for minions in mortal veterans could be a worthwhile idea. Note: I am not advocating for picking her up as a minion, at all, but:
1) We are probably going to have to do something about the whole wellness clinic and possibly the whole cultist organization if we manage to foil their plans or destroy their patron. At the very least the building itself was designed with magical rituals in mind, and has standing area of effect mind altering magic. Even if the magic fades, it would still be a building designed as a ritual site for some very bad no good magic. We would either want to destroy it, or to get it under our control somehow. And we don't currently have time to manage the building by ourselves due to action economy. Hiring a local manager makes a lot of sense. The resources we could probably get from raiding the cult's accounts.

2) I think White God has it handled, but in general, Ruth deserves some karmic reward for helping us.

3) In the future, having some old but active minions would be helpful for setting plausible covers in a lot of situations.

you know most women didn't exactly serve in the army in combat right?

OK, let's see if you can pull this off.

After the stunt, it's 16 dice at -2 difficulty. I'm pretty confident we're going to roll her over just like the vampire.

Also, because it's been bugging me, why was the winning vote for v5 again? I'm pretty sure I didn't see 4 other versions before it got posted, so I'm a little confused on the logic behind the numbering system, there.

-We cant restore youth or longevity yet.
And in many cases doing so for old people will draw eyes and attention we arent ready for.
At least not at the moment.

-Im not ruling out old people.

Im just saying that Mrs Koskinen in particular, and most older people do not bring enough to the table to stand out as compared to the other candidates, and are either old enough to have earned some rest, or have sufficient family/social links that dealings with them would come under significant scrutiny from their family/friends/society.

Essentially, I dont think the juice is worth the squeeze. At least in this case.

1)White God should have that part handled.
Send along a priest or half a dozen once the place is secured and have it sanctified, then someone keeps an eye on it.

2)White G should have this handled as well.
The class action lawsuit thats likely to follow is going to do interesting things to the ownership of this place anyway.

3)In my experience a lot of these people have significant family links or layers of officials meant to keep an eye out for them.
Thats both an additional threat surface to worry about, because hostiles will try to use their family and friends against them, and it also serves as a set of watchers/tripwires to navigate without drawing additional attention.

After the stunt, it's 16 dice at -2 difficulty. I'm pretty confident we're going to roll her over just like the vampire.

-Charisma 3 + Intimidation 4 + Excellency 7 + Stunt 2 = 16 dice
Dexterity 4 + Intimidation 4 + Excellency 8 + Stunt 2 = 18 dice
And at -2 DC, we would be rolling at Difficulty 4. Good chance of rolling double digit successes.

-I picked v5 in order to give a reasonable amount of room in case BronzeTongue wanted to make a different version of his plan.
That way he had v3 and v4 available as options.

Arc 3 Post 17: Touch of Terror
Touch of Terror

25st of July 2006 A.D.

Nodding you approach the woman, hand reaching out as though for a handshake, though "Not at all. Nice to meet you ma'am. I do want to ask a quick question about something". As the faux-nurse takes your hand, frost spreads on the woman's skin as you clamp down your fingers painfully and in a voice filled to the brim with frozen rage you half-whisper. "How badly would you like to live through this...?"

What she sees in your eyes you will never know, her once pretty face contorting into a mask of terror. You can feel her heart pounding through her wrist. She shakes her head, or at least you think it was a shake of the head, she could have just been spamming to get out of your grip, then just as suddenly the look of horror falls into slack incomprehension and the woman collapses forward leaving you to catch her so she does not smash her head on the off white tile.

Lost 1 Essence -> now at 9/12

"Hey!" You manage not to curse, though less because of your father and Lydia listening and more from sheer shock.

Still half holding her you turn to look at the people behind you. Thankfully Ruth is the only one paying any attention to what you had just done... or tried to do at least. The realization that you can be scary enough to make monsters faint is a strange and heady one.

"Mrs Koskinen. Please take your friends into your rooms and lock the door until someone comes for you."

"I..." the lady looks between you, Lydia still standing there looking as surprised as you feel and your dad setting down the duffel bag to grab the sword. "Yes, yes I will. Godspeed."

With a little help from Lydia she starts to suher the others into what looks like a game-room, suspiciously unused one from the glimpse you catch of it.

Just as you are trying to shake your prisoner awake you see a man, just shy of middle age, balding and solidity built in a jacket with the Soul's Rest mark and logo on his jacket rush in from down the hall. Thinking quickly you open your mouth to spin some story about how the nurse had just collapsed. Then you see the flash of a pistol being drawn from inside the jacket.

Looks like we found security.

Throwing the unconscious woman away from you, much to Usum's confusion. "A hostage is a useful thing..." you reach out to draw the sword within, the fire hissing in the air. In the moment it takes the gunman to level the weapon at you and fire, just a little high of center mass the blade is already between you, cutting bullets out of the air with an eerily bell-like sound.

Used 1 Essence -> Now at 8/12

"Lay down your arms and you will be judged fairly," your dad calls pulling Amoracchius free of the bag with quick effective movements.

"You don't know who the fuck you're dealing with!" the man snarls as he bounds upwards in a jerky too quick motion, limbs controverting unnaturally. He actually sticks to the ceiling like a giant bug, you realize as you charge, but if he thinks that is going to keep him out of reach of your sword he is sorely mistaken.

You slice the gun from his hand sending a pair of fingers flying and then you continue the slash diagonally across his chest until you hit bone, a rib you think. He falls with a heavy thump spilling blood all over the corridor.

And that of course is when Lydia comes out of the game room, takes one look at the gunman one before huffing, looking up at you. "Started without me have you?"

That shouldn't be funny, it really shouldn't... but it was anyway.

For his part dad is not in as high spirits, though after looking at the man for a moment he shakes his head. No time. Now you have to get to the basement.

"Clippy, what's the fastest way to the basement from there?"

"Straight down mistress," she replies much to tour surprise. "I estimate that with the use of arcane tools you should be able to break through in 70 seconds , rather than the 100 seconds it would take you to reach and traverse the stairs even if unimpeded."

What do you do?

[] Dig straight into the basement with Essence tools (Cost 1 Essence)

[] Take the normal route, risking more guards. but also not leaving a giant hole behind you.

[] Write in

OOC: When you rolled 18 successes for that intimidation I had to stop and look out the window for a bit, in the end I decided that you has shocked her so much she literally faints if she fails a Stamina check, which she did. Then when the guard came around the corner between DPE and the fact that you were holding an unconscious ally of his he decided rightly that it was an attack, spent a willpower not to listen to you that round and fired. It did not go well for him, but you now have one unconscious nurse and one guard in critical condition on your hands.

Pretty sure we can't actually do that to muggles anyway. To give supernatural merits to someone they need to already be a little supernatural.
You cannot give magic stats, but you can give merits and since she is supernatural, if only barely as a minor talent you can grant supernatural merits, like say:
This is from the start of the conversation that went on to bring it up.

Technically I guess we could get them to become supernatural in some other way first, but that's a lot of effort for a minion. Makes more sense to use it on existing supernaturals or people we want to be immortal for Molly's long term social and mental health.

Can we just stand up and yell "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!" at any guards we come across? They are all likely creatures of darkness. We have large bonuses to social rolls like intimidation. Who thinks we can get them to kneel?

I stand corrected on the viability of dex threats , it truly is the god stat. I wonder if we could make hearts explode if we pulled this sort of thing in Shintai with 24 dice. :V

Interesting that the difficultly was still 6. Hard to tell if that's a context thing from threatening someone on their home ground or something supernatural.

Not that the extra successes would have mattered in any case. :V

They can spend willpower to ignore us, so it probably won't work any better than it did on the first guy.

What are she chances that if she survives, she'll start a cult of our dark divine majesty? Or become a nun to escape us? I mean, this is well above legendary success and into "changes her whole life" success.

Actually, before we head to the basement, we might try and take out the doctor before he can organise the cult to attack us more efficiently.

Is his office near?

Hmm.
Michael has medical corpsman training; thats Medicine 2.
Maybe he just doesnt think we have the time?

Not posting the combat part but you guys have to see this one
Intimidation away
Do the old people notice what you did (Diff 8 because of their mental state)

If you look at the old people roll, they seem to be rolling at Difficulty 8.

Im assuming the "nurse" was benefitting from the layered buffs on this facility, so DPoE brought difficulty down from 8(difficult) to 6(standard). Because if we'd been rolling at difficulty 4(standard difficulty 6 - DPoE 2) we would have been rolling around 20-something successes. Which would have been even more obscene.

Actually, before we head to the basement, we might try and take out the doctor before he can organise the cult to attack us more efficiently.
Is his office near?
Not our primary goal.
Iku Turso and the ritual summoning thing is.
We have to prioritize.

Besides, he'll come to us. No need to rush.
We benefit from him assembling all his reliable troops in one place; easier to hit them all at once.

Whoops, sometimes one can be TOO scary, it's a shame we've lost stealth but what can you do?

It's probably better to take the stairs, it may be more essence efficient even if guards need to be cut down.

Nah.
We want to avoid guards and spending effort on them before we reach our actual objective.
They're a distraction, an Essence sink, and increase the potential for catching civilians in the crossfire.

I do wonder where these guards are coming from.
There were no official guards on this place's roster, so it looks like these guys are actually staff members. Seems that there are more cultists on the staff than we initially had reason to believe.

Besides, he'll come to us. No need to rush.
We benefit from him assembling all his reliable troops in one place; easier to hit them all at once.
We have no area-attacks.
Enough mortals can mess us up, so taking out individual foes and the Doctor as a possible leader right now to stop them from coming all at once might be sensible strategy.
