Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

[X] Search for Cindy with the Crown if you can get her out Katrina loses her leverage on Matthews

Since we know the Capricorpus is around, is there any way to learn Murder is Meat before the end of the arc?
Ideally the Ankou will take care of that restless soul, but if it doesn't work out like this, another option might be desirable.

It's by a long long long way the most important to call Lydia and warn her and her father.

[X] All this talk of old Welsh spirits turned winter's fixers make you think of Lydia and in particular her globetrotting father. This is probably not how Daniel anticipated introducing his girlfriend to dad, but needs must

They're the likely targets, and her father may well be able to muster significantly more resources than we can in the face of a threat to his life, given he's a high ranking member of the Winter Court.

And it seems very likely that fear of his daughter dying is the metaphysical hook they'll use for the Black Feast, or consuming her to sympathetically consume her father.

Just on moral grounds, as the likely victims, warning them should be the top priority. Every minute we waste is another minute Lydia could be kidnapped in. Everything else is less urgent.

Also, I don't think we even know IC that Gard is on our side rather than being a bad guy infiltrating Marcone's operation on behalf of the necromancers. How do we know she isn't also a rogue hoping to partake in the Feast?

"That's... odd," the spirit says slowly and for the first time since you met him it is like he is struggling to remember something which for a spirit of intellect is odd in and off itself. "
Right, Evil Bob is around as well.
That'll be fun.

We know Katrin is called the Forsaken Sister.
We know that most beings do not take kindly to their former sisters becoming Nazi-Necromancer.

Gard may be a mercenary working for a crimeboss, but that still leaves her several steps above Katrin.

We have Enemy (Winter Court) as a 2 dot Background on our character sheet.
It doesnt rise to the level of having Mab as an enemy, but it does meant that random WC fae are likely to believe thw worst of us and give us grief.

The Eldest Ankou is a Winter Fae.
Go to him with a bad reputatiom and negative proof and he will ignore you at best.

We know Gard isnt because she is working for Marcone.
And Dad has Coonections.

Not actually true.
1)We've done business with Gard. Polite business.

2) We have credibility with Gard. She doesnt know what we are, but she recognized on sight that we were Serious Business, amd addressed us as outside fate. In addition to that, she has the debrief of Marcone's goons, and Molly tanking point blank assault weapon fire was a noteworthy observation.

3)Her reaction to Gorfel was distinctly negative, suggesting necromancer get no sympathy

4) Gorfel's mooks attempted to rob Marcone's people.
That tells us that Marcone and the Thule Society people are not on good terms, and that she is primed to retaliate, even without her sister as bait.
Or Marcone will ask her to as retaliation for the attempted sidewalk robbery.

By comparison
1)We have never met Lydia's dad. He doesnt know us, and we have no reason to beoive he will heed a 17 year old voice on the phone.

2) We have Enemy 2(Winter Court) as a Background.
That means we are likely to have negative credibility and trust among Winter Vourt fae who dont have reason to know Molly personally or by reputation. The Eldest Ankou is a Winter Court vassal.

The Eldest Ankou is out of contact with Mab, hence why she hired Harry to look for him, so this isn't a concern, as he shouldn't know we're an enemy.

Beyond that, we can take Harry's name, as this is his investigation, and ask Daniel to get Lydia to earn her father on the former's behalf.

We have no reason to believe that just because Gard is working for one bad guy, Marcone that she isn't allied with other even worse bad guys, the Necromancers. For all we know she's either infiltrating his organisation or simply following her own aims in Chicago on the side using her employment as cover.

And if an enemy goes to the eldest Ankou with detailed information about a threat to him and his daughter using key terms like the Black Feast and the name of the target he's very likely hunting, the Capiorcorpus, that demonstrates that there's a threat, even if that threat is Molly, and means he'll take precautions. Anyone that knows those words and why they're relevant to him isn't a random teenager, they're someone who knows key and very relevant secrets that he has to take seriously.

It doesn't matter if he takes precautions against us or against the necromancers, he'll still be prepared to defend himself. At the moment we're hanging him, Lydia, and quite likely Daniel out to dry, ignorant of the fact that they're in immediate lethal danger.

Warning Lydia's father is the most effective and by far the most urgent thing on the list. Even if he takes us passing a message through her as a threat, when it comes true he'll know we were trying to help him.

I wonder if Lydia's father isn't cooperating with the Thule Society? Maybe he wants to pass his mantle on to his daughter so she doesn't end up as a weak Winter Fey, assuming she even chooses to do so rather than remaining Human. Or maybe he sees it as a chance to elevate her to something approaching the godhood he once enjoyed?

That would explain why he's gone off Mab's radar to the point she sends Harry after him.

Of course, this doesn't mean the Thule Society doesn't plan to double cross him. Nazi necromancers probably aren't the most trustworthy sort.

The Eldest Ankou is out of contact with Mab
This is probably the case, but it's worth re-examining our base assumptions since the fey are involved.

It's possible this is a game Mab is running. She knows about a threat to Ankou, but rather than protecting him through traditional means she sets Dresden on the case of finding him.

Dresden being Dresden makes it highly likely he'll find and disrupt the black feast and using him gives her a chance to play with her favorite toy, bring him closer to her camp, and save herself considerable effort fulfilling her duties as a liege lord at a time when she's got a lot of shit to handle from Arcris Tor.

Maybe everything is as it seems on that front, but we're operating on what appears to be a third hand implication from a queen of the fey. It'd pay to be ready for a hidden twist to come up.

On the stuff with Gard, it's worth noting that Harry's reaction to her wasn't nearly as strong as it would be if she was a full on black hat like corpse taker.

Wizards in general and Harry in particular hate necromancy, even when the practitioner isn't mortal enough to fall under the laws. Having one on staff would put Marcone much higher on Harry's list, and provoke some level of immediate hostility whenever she was in the room.

We shouldn't exactly trust her, but I think Molly has decent reason to believe she isn't a necromancer or anything from that end of the street.

There's also the fact that her title in the eyes of Fate, as pulled by the Crown, is "The Forsaken Sister," which implies that she is no longer on good terms with her family. That means the odds that her sister is working as an infiltrator for her faction is low, and we have no reason to really expect that beyond paranoia.

On the other hand, our evidence that Lydia's dad is the Ankou is purely circumstantial. Not something necessarily worth acting on without some form of confirmation.

One other thing they could be doing is that said daughter is next in line for the ankous position just like how mabs daughter can become the winter lady. Using the ritual to take that next in line position as their changeling child and then murdering THE ANKOU could be the goal.

The Eldest Ankou is out of contact with Mab, hence why she hired Harry to look for him, so this isn't a concern, as he shouldn't know we're an enemy.
Is he really? Or is Mab playing word and mind games? If we can pick up the phone and call him, so can she.

The Winter Knight is Winter's primary agent for affecting events in mortal society. With the current Winter Knight Lloyd Slate condemned as a traitor and imprisoned in Arctis Tor as an object lesson, her preferred replacement refusing the job offer, and Mab being unwilling to settle for any more trash candidates? Mab has limited means to affect the mortal world.

So hiring an external contractor and tossing them into play allows her to affect events at a remove.

She has form for this sort of thing; the plot of Small Favor was her obliquely maneuvering Dresden as a pawn to deny the Archive to the Denarians. And Lea training Molly Carpenter was her covertly training up a backup candidate to the backup candidate for the Lady position, without Maeve's awareness.
This is probably the case, but it's worth re-examining our base assumptions since the fey are involved.

If Molly can find the dude at short notice without knowing his name or what he looks like, his freaking liege lord should be able to do so magically. He's a Winter vassal, and in her jurisdiction. There's good odds that Mab could always find him, and that the exact phrasing of the job that she gave Dresden is a case of Sidhe word games.

The fact that she didnt simply call him and warn him means she's either constrained by something, which is unlikely but possible inside her own court, or she's playing twelve-dimensional chess again. As she's aware of Nemesis activity in her Court, she might have deliberately gone outside the Court to use pawns agents she knows are immune to Nemesis corruption.

Or it might be revenge.
Thorned Namshiel is on the C-suite of the Thule Society, and he's also (one of)the Denarians who was allegedly involved in that attack on Arctis Tor that left Hellfire outside the walls of Arctis Tor. Taking out a fellow executive might weaken his organization.

Of course, given some of the theories about alleged Nemesis infiltration, that attack might have been orchestrated by Mab herself in order to get a whole bunch of Nemesis-infected Winter fae killed off.
In which case, motives get even more murky.

Also worth noting that with Odin and Kringle being the same person?
Kattrin is obliquely Winter Court business.
And that attempting to resolve the Kattrin problem might give her a bargaining chip to cash in with him later.

Like I said earlier, its Mab.
Twelve dimensional chess is always a consideration when she does stuff.

EDIT
Also it occurs to me that we cant assume there's going to be only one executive of the Thule Society here for this.
Just because we have only seen Kattrin doesnt mean she didnt bring backup from the Thule Society's C-suite.
Or her own personal goonsquad trained or hired for this. Or both.

Dead Beat had four five serious face sorcerers running around in Chicago at the same time: Cowl, Kumori, Grevane, Quintus Cassius and the Capriocorpus. Mavra made for a sixth, but she only appeared at the beginning and end.
This is not as big, but even half that would be...dire.

We called our dad to have him deliver text messages? Kinda boring.
When the feds aren't even pretending to obey the rules, it's better to err on the side of caution, IMO.

Once we have the power and resources to accomplish it without implicating ourselves, I favor ruining the lives and careers of every agent involved in the Daedalus project. I'm vindictive like that.

Arc 2 Post 26: The Enduring and the Lost
The Enduring and the Lost

22st of July 2006 A.D.

The phone rings once, twice, three times making you wonder if Gard is one of those people who doesn't take calls from unknown numbers easy. Do telemarketers trouble occult specialists for the mob very often? you wonder biting back a laugh at the mental image that conjures. Finally the cool voice on the other end replies: "Yes?"

"Hello, this is Molly Carpenter, we met when dealing with a particular group... aggressive litterers." Gorfel and company had left all sorts of spent shell casings and blood all over the place not to mention the chaos at the restaurant. "One of them is back and she felt..." there is no way you can talk about this in code, short of asking her to come meet with you on faith alone you cannot keep the veil up. On the other hand what you actually have to say would make any judge think you are role-playing or crazy so at least they would not be able to use it against you officially. "One of them felt like you, red hair, grey eyes, rune studded jacket. She kidnapped a girl and is planning to consume the mantle of a retired death god."

From the other side of the line all you can hear is silence, not even the sound of her breathing. "Helo, are you still...?"

"Yes," the word is harsh and edged with a burst of static. "Where did you see her, when?"

"Three hours ago, pretty far out of town, but she's in Chicago now. I have... ways of tracking her."

Just because you want her help doesn't mean you want to reveal some of your most scary tricks to someone who works for Marcone. "Me and dad are going after her. "

"A warning for thee and for thine sire before all else," Gard replies her voice level again. "This would not be the first time Katrina crossed swords with the servants of the White God and while she had not met that Sword she is no less dangerous for it. An even field is no guarantee of victory."

"That is why I'm gonna make it really uneven. I just want to know how best to do that, though if you would like to help..."

"I would, others would as well, but she has chosen her moment well, Katrina took well to the lesson of patience if nothing else."

"Well OK then I'm outside of Harry's and dad's on the way. We can meet up at the..."

***

Half an hour later Gard walks through the dubiously clean glass door of the Burger King across from Harry's place, heralded by the sound of screeching wheels, though one would not think she is flustered from the way she saunters in like she owns the place. The people one table over from yours certainly seem to think she does from the way they scurry away under her glare, to your dad's unspoken disapproval.

You had time to catch him up on what had happened this morning before Gard arrived and he had mostly agreed that you had made the best of a bad situation, but he had been a lot more worried about Capricorpus than you had and you could tell that as much as he wants to help he would prefer that you not be involved fighting someone like that. Hopefully Gard's help is going to calm his nerves a little even if she is a bitch.

"Miss Carpenter, Sir Knight," the woman introduces herself. "Even if nothing more comes out of this you have my thanks for finding Katrina. Monoc Securities lost track of her in '89 and we have not been able to find her since."

Part of you wants to ask what Monoc securities is, but something tells you it it bad form to be nosy right from the get go. Instead you offer helpfully. "She goes by Katrina Hoff now, no internet presence, but property records match a place in Boston."

Lost 1 Essence

It feels weird to manually find the screenshots Clippy tracked down, but you do not want to reveal her either.

"Þetta fer allt í hring." Though you do not understand the words she murmurs under her breath you hear the sorrow in the tone all too well. "Hoff was an estate in Småland, Sweden, the place she was born, the bastard daughter of an English priest back in the days when there barely was an England, a holy man they called him later and perhaps he was, but I had no reason to love him and Cwenhild as she was then had even less cause."

OK now that you can't not ask about... "What is she?" What are you? the question is implied.

"Now she is a traitor, a bloody handed coward, barely fit for Hella's realm. If you mean to ask what she was, she was the last of the Valkyrja the Choosers of the Slain." Gard shakes her head, as though trying to banish a particularly troublesome fly, but you doubt memories and regrets will be so easily cast off. "Perhaps her fate was always a dark one, made a herald of the Victory Bringer on the eve of his defeat. Now is matters little, my sister is as dead to me as if she had been burned to ash in Surt's flames and the ashes cast into the depths of the sea. All that is left to do is slay the murderer who wears her face."

Realizing you are sitting across from a minor Norse Goddess while sipping a Coke is not as weird as the phrase would imply. Maybe it's that you are the one who had brought up retired gods, maybe it's just that you know for a fact that your dad more powerful beings regularly, maybe you are just weird yourself. Wait a second... Gard is a Valkyrie who works for Monoc Security. You might as well ask "Is Odin still around?"

"We are none of us quite what we were but we remember still honor and valor. Even in this changed world, there will still be warriors true and so there must be those who choose."

Gain 2 Essence

So that is a yes on Odin, in some form at least. Looks like whatever you will be revealing here will get to the ears higher than just Marcone, but can you afford to keep anything back when a little girl's life is on the line?

What powers of yours do you reveal?

[] [Reveal] Write in

When do you ask about Katrina, Gard, Valkyrie s or Monoc Security?

[] [Ask] Write in

OOC: I thought about pushing through this, but as good as your roll was for getting in touch, and it was nonsense good, this is a really touchy subject not just for her but for all her sisters. How open she is with you will depend on what you are with her as much as on your next rolls.
