Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

If he's so stubborn why would the Crown be able to navigate this situation? It can't just solve a dice roll in our place, and adding the modifier of peacefully is probably going to be something like bribing him.
I doubt this cop is gonna take a bribe and our answer seeking crown isn't a genie it'll help us also you know probably give us a huge modifier and possibly give us info which would help us solve the problem duh. also hes stubborn as hes sure harry guilty.

[X] Use your Crown on something
-[X] Gorfel: What are the identities of those that Gorfel referred to as belonging to his brotherhood?

I think I am more interested in an objective list then in Gorfel's thoughts, because it's likely that anyone in Gorfel's brotherhood that is also a double agent on the council is hiding his real identity from Gorfel.

If the crown gets us a list of names, will those be provided to us as True Names? That is, will we get flashes of those people speaking their name? Or will it be more like Molly remembers reading a list of names from a scroll?

More loom than scroll, but yes the latter. You could ask what they look like to get a list of faces if you like, though you do not have the expression to draw them at the moment.

we won't get almost any actual details on said people though and this prepares us for dealing with these people which we will have to do and we can ask the same identifying question once we get our hands on literally almost any other guy so I'd rather play safe for now.

the identities question is not useful immediately and doesn't at all prepare us for a fight. if we get literally any other member later though we can ask said question though.

Why not do a demonstration of obvious magic?
Doesnt achieve anything, besides telling this dude we have magic.
Which only puts us on his radar. Again.

No, it would burn out the bullet, the gun and the gunman if you get another hook for things related to the organization you can use it. Magic Nazis are an occult and dangerous enough topic that your Crown goes 'this is awesome, lets learn more' as opposed to say its reactions to gambling which is 'yawn, here are your numbers'.
Then lets not.

Keep the bullet for later. We can walk up to the sniper nest, stand where the shooter stood, look down at the street and ask who fired at our party from that location. Then use the bullet to narrow things down further, like asking who gave the order for the bullet to be fired, who paid for the shooter, or if they have any accomplices.

Commentary!
It goes oddly well with the poster from the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings with Gandalf front and center between impressed hobbits.
Okay.
So obviously Molly's sword has, or will have, a stylized eye on the sword's guard.

"I'd like to ask you some questions," the detective says gruffly, though from the sounds of footsteps you guess there must be two others with him, maybe patrolling officers since they are the ones who are supposed to investigate gunfire being heard.
So witnesses.
Assuming they are cops, and not just some people wearing police uniform, or a glamor.
It does mean that we have to worry about someone being left behind to watch the apartment.

"Did you hear the shots half an hour ago and did you see anything or anyone suspicious around seven forty five this evening?"
"Heard 'em, didn't rush to the door for obvious reasons, by the time I got a look outside everything was normal," comes the reply. "I think it must have been from the roof of this building or maybe the one just across the little alley there."
Seven forty five is rather late.
Means that we are well into Sunday evening here, eight o clock or later.

That is a very Fae answer.
Note that nothing he's said here is a lie. He didnt rush to the door, and by the time he got a look outside the shooting had stopped and everything was normal.

"That's a 44 Magnum isn't it?" the Detective asks. Something clinks on the table and then silence so deep you can hear their breath. "Found those on the roof, 44 Magnum."

"You think I was on the roof shooting my gun? I mean the pidgeons are bad don't get me wrong, but bullets aren't cheap you know. I'd have used a sling maybe," Harry jokes. "Or you'd have used someone else so's not to get your hands dirty right?" Greene didn't raise his voice, but you can hear the anger and worse the humiliation in it. For him this was personal now.
-Get his hands dirty at what? Greene has made no claim that anyone was shot or injured, just that shots were fired on the roof.
In many parts of Chicago the beat cops wont even show up for this, given Chi-town's crime levels. Homicide detectives definitely have more important things to do. So why is Greene here?

-Greene is doing his professional reputation in front of other policemen no favors here.

44 Magnum is a pistol round. Dresden carries a revolver. Nobody tries to shoot other people from a roof using a fucking pistol unless they're like fucking Deathstroke. And if you can afford to use a minion as a shooter, you wouldnt give the dude your own gun to use. Its not like the US is short on firearms.

As in, there's stuff he's throwing at the wall here that would have other cops exchanging glances behind your back.
Its embarassing.

"I'd like to see your gun," Greene presses.
Why? You cant tell if a gun has been freshly fired by just looking at it thirty minutes later, you dont have a warrant or probable cause to seize the weapon, you cant match fired brass cartridges to just any weapon, and you cant tell if Dresden has only one 44 caliber instead of several, so if he gave you a different revolver you wouldnt even know it.

Even worse, even assuming that Dresden fired those shots and you can prove it, there's no victim here.
The very most you can hold him for is negligent discharge of a firearm, a class 4 felony that would be pled down to a misdemeanor and fine, and thats assuming you can get the DA to take the case instead of all the other actually important cases they have on their docket.

Murphy described this guy as competent in Proven Guilty. If he's flailing around like this, something's pressuring him.
"Nah, you are right Dresden, always insisting everything is by the books." You so do not trust the false cheer in that voice. It sounds like it should be paired with a shark's smile. "Do you know what I do have though, a friend at the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. I wonder if you are as scrupulous about your own papers Dresden." You hear him getting up. "Enjoy your little detective fantasy while it lasts Harry." he makes the name into an insult.
He just threatened Dresden in front of two other officers.

Now the cops, the Chicago cops in particular, have a reputation IRL, and the whole thin blue line thing going on.
They are probably not going to report him officially, and even if they did nothing official will happen, but they are going to talk, and gossip will get around the force.

Dresden has a reputation with the CPD in the books, and a history reaching back to Victor Sells and the loup garou case, as well as lesser cases. Specifically, he was, and I think still is, on the books as a consultant with Special Division, who handle Chicago's spooky cases. Special Division is run by Lieutenant Murphy.

Dresden's Karrin Murphy.

Greene is a garden variety Homicide detective. He's been a cop long enough to have a bunch of contacts, but he's not a sergeant, or a lieutenant, let alone a captain. He doesnt have the juice to be making these sorts of threats.
Dude is about to go splat like a bug on a windshield, and Molly does not need to lift a finger.

Thing is, he should know this.
Dresden has only met him once or twice before. They dont have a history. So all this? Is coming out of the blue.
Dude is either being pressured by someone, or has been mindwhammied.

Wont be surprised if he turns out to be the neoNazi contact on the force.
Someone beat the shit out of him outside Dresden's apartment after all, and we know it wasnt Harry.

I'm leaning toward mindwhammied. If he's otherwise competent, even a lot of pressure shouldn't make him forget basics, not to this extent. Mindfuckery, on the other hand, can literally degrade the victim's thought processes to the point that they're legitimately impaired like they've been drugged.

Speaking of being drugged, he could have been dosed with Red Court Vampire saliva. That'll put pressure on him and the mindwhammy.

@uju32 there are riffles that use a .44: Link to some of them.
Magazine rifles firing 44 cal? Huh. Never heard of them. TIL something new.

Doesnt change the fact that he's asking Dresden to see his pistol, when the top of a multi-storey building is rifle range for anyone who is not like a comicbook character. Even Olympic pistol shooting tops out at 25m, and thats with practiced shooters with specialized weapons on a range against an unmoving target.

Unlikely.
Dresden wiped out the Red Court vamp presence in Chicago when he murderized Bianca, and the only others here since then have been in and out hitsquads that have tried their luck at Dresden and died.

Mindfuckery here is probably magic.

-[X] Gorfel: What does Gorfel know about those that belong to what he refers to as his brotherhood?

This seems like the best play with as little information as we've got. I know some people want to wrap it up with a bow right now, but we only get one shot with questions on the big organizations and right now we don't know what we NEED to know.

Ask about their identities and we can't ask about their headquarters or defenses for example.

What do you do?

[] Use your Crown on something
-[] Greene: Write in
-[] Gorfel: Write in
-[] The bullet you caught: Write in

[] Ask Harry why on Earth he decided to pick a fight with the cops

Going for a write-in

PLAN
[X]Write-In: Walk The Dog
-[X]Get a (women's)shirt/dress from Dresden
-[X]Ask Mouse to escort you as you take a walk around the neighborhood to be sure the cops are gone
-[X]Take the stairs to the roof from where the sniper attempted to shoot at you, and look at the view, and if there's anything Occult
-[X]Crown of Eyes while on the roof and looking at the view: Who fired the shots from the roof at us

Give Michael and Harry room to talk without the precocious 17 year old.
Get a look at the sniper nest. Let Mouse get a look at the sniper nest, just in case; a scent might be useful, if there was more than one person there. The name and ID of the assassin might be useful when we talk to Gorfels next.

We dont need the names and IDs of Gorfel's buddies yet.

thats kind of a huge waste on the bullet given you could ask whats happened in the prescense of said bullet for the last few days. As presumably the bullets been around a lot of stuff and could give locations. Not to mention whose not gonna help us for so many reasons great now we have a name at best could be a contracted killer unlikely to be a wizard since its likely from a modern gun and it doesn't tell us where they've been or will be.

We arent using the bullet.
Its using the sniper nest from which the shots were fired.
It saves the bullet for later use, like if we need to narrow down which of Gorfel's colleagues is passing out kill orders.

He was just beaten up outside of Dresden's apartment.
I would guess that he isn't acting remotly rationally here and it doesn't take magic to make him do so, if he sees himself personally attacked.
Now whatever set him up to lurk outside Dresden's place in the first place might have been pressure or magic, but now it's self-running, he considers Dresden a personal enemy and acts, recklessly, against him. That part unfortunatly doesn't seem far-fetched for your average american cop.

I would do both. Knowledge on Gorfels associates is more valuable all in all than a single sniper, but the shooter gives us a good starting point for further direct information. I think we should have 4 motes right now, or 5 with the recovered Essence?

identities are useful long term their not gonna help us with locations, abilities, plans, etc etc. Sure we might get some false pictures honestly that can be useful as well to know how they present themselves though.

If even one of their names is the name of a Wizard in good standing in the White Council (nevermind Senior Council), then Harry can use his own contacts to track down the wizard and we can get more info from that person.

Would this work? It's similar to the example of asking who part of the Black Council would be, I think.
I'd rather ask for the names of the people in Gorfel's 'brotherhood' as opposed to asking for the list of names that Gorfel reffered to as - that way we get the names of the people he does not know about.

yes long term also you know we can do that once we find literally almost any other (fuck it even works on dead bodies as far as I know if we don't have future hostages) members right now we should probably be worrying about more immediate needs like knowing what the motivations of the members this guy knows about, their powers, their appearance, and anything else the guy knows.

Harry is a good detective and Ebeneezer is even better at his particular job, so he would only get involved if this is a serious infiltration of the WC.
If we get a list of names, I'm sure Harry can find at least one of them and from there on we can ask further questions.

okay why though what prevents us from asking this question towards literally any other member once we encounter them? Their gonna be sending more out to kill us.
also council members live throughout the whole world dude even with the nevernever travel isn't easy and quest works on short times meaning it won't have any direct result for you know probably a couple weeks in quest?

Edit: Before any of said info becomes relevant we are likely to be attacked again.

A nice charm to have would be a variant of Skyfire Seizing Repaste:

SKYFIRE-SEIZING REPAST

Cost: 1wp
Mins: Essence 2
Type: Reflexive (Step 8)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Obvious
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Insignificant Embers Intuition

The Green Sun beats hot on the continental districts and world-impaling skyscraper manses of the Demon City, yet it does not scorch the mirrored brass and garish verdigris entwining every wall and roof. Infernals with this Charm may similarly absorb and dissipate the damage inflicted by purely energy-based attacks. Examples include fire and other concentrated elemental Essence, Essence cannon fire or an Abyssal's Crypt Bolt Attack but not effects such as Death of Obsidian Butterflies. Skyfire-Seizing Repast can't defend against Holy attacks. Use of this Charm against a valid damage source reduces the post-soak damage by the Infernal's Essence. If this reduces the damage pool to zero dice, the attack is completely absorbed into the Infernal's anima and flares the banner to one level of display brighter than it was before, leaving her untouched. Otherwise, the remaining damage penetrates the anima flare normally. The Infernal also regains motes equal to the lesser of (her Essence x 2) or the (original post-soak damage of the attack x 2).
Adjusting for the different setting it should regenerate fewer motes and only cost one to use, but it is still nice to have a defence against energy-based attacks, when we start messing with Wizards and particularly with Winter and Summer Fey, who do love to use their elements as weapons.

I wouldn't buy it now, but certainly at Essence 3.

Could look like this in ExWoD:

Lanka Charm:
Skyfire-Seizing Repast(••)
As Ravana dreams of harnessing nuclear devestation, the Infernal already seizes such energy and its lesser brethern with her bare hands.
System: As a reflexive Action the Infernal may use this Charm to absorb any elemental or fully energy-based attacks. This includes such things as a wizard's fireball, but also a taser's charge or raw necromantic energy aimed to drain the Infernal's life.
The post-soak damage is reduced by the Infernal's Essence-rating, and the absorbed Energy causes her Anima to flare if it hasn't done so yet (if it is already flaring the duration until it goes down is reset).
If an attack is completly absorbed in this manner the Infernal regains the motes equal to the lower of her Essence Rating or the absorbed attack's post-soak damage.

@DragonParadox
Acceptable adaption?

For one thing, Dresden didnt beat him up. He knows it, else he would have had Dresden arrested for assaulting a police officer.
In fact, it was Dresden and Molly who got him an ambulance.
There's no real room for irrational resentment.

Then there's the whole question of why he ended up outside Dresden's apartment.
Because remember that Dresden had no connection to the Splattercon killings besides being called to bail Molly out. And he's had no other contact with Greene in his capacity as a police officer.

So Greene has no official or unofficial reason to be lurking outside Dresden's home.

And he's a Homicide cop.
He's not Vice, or Narcotics, or Gangs, who might be able to justify long stretches of time on the street with vaguely characterized tasking; Homicide have actual cases to clear, and places to be where their presence is documented.

He doesnt have all that much free time to spare, and Dresden is a known quantity to CPD.
That he's spending so much of it in the last week outside Dresden's home suggests that he's under some sort of pressure.
If even one of their names is the name of a Wizard in good standing in the White Council (nevermind Senior Council), then Harry can use his own contacts to track down the wizard and we can get more info from that person.
Note that all we get is what Gorfel believes.
That does not necessarily mean that its actually true, or that it can be proved to others. Dresden and Ebenezar suspected Senior Council member Cristos of being Black Council in canon, and were never able to confirm or deny for several years.

Moderate your expectations.

I voted for asking the absolute question on the organisation, not Gorefels knowledge about them.
If one of his associates is a White Council wizard, we will know.
