Eyes Above
7th of July 2006 A.D.
There's an old proverb that says that the wise know when to be quiet, or at the very least you think there is a proverb to that effect, you heard it from a wise old master type character in one of Mathew's shows. Given the quality of the dubs he will take in anime sometimes the character might have
actually said that to get your fries you have to know when to start a riot, but it sounds wise enough to you that you contain all the questions that come to mind, about the Council and its politics, about the war and about magic. Everything McCoy is likely to share Harry probably knows as well and everything Harry does not know the old wizard is not likely to tell you over coffee because you asked nicely.
Harry tries to convince him to stay, but the old man shakes his head, beard and mustache tangling up even harder with the sigh. "Can't Hoss, have to report the leeches on the Ways then I have a meeting an' after that... 'nother meeting. Winter's on the defensive more than usual, Summer's on the warpath and something's really stirred up the Wyld Hunt."
"Rare it is for the huntsman to have lost prey as mighty as you," the demon in your head gloats. You do not share the thought, since if he is right it's not like you can fix it. What are you supposed to do offer up your own head on a spike?
"The Huntsman bears no ill will to those who by guile or strength escape him," Usum corrects you.
"He is but emboldened to scare up even mightier prey."
"Good luck to him finding vampires them," you scoff at the thought of wasting all that power on what is basically a pissing contest.
"Thank you Harry, for being here for my family again," your dad says to Harry. "You're a good man."
Of course Harry is a good man, you think automatically. That did not really need saying. There is something strange about the tone as well, all the more so as it's dad and he does not do the whole hidden meanings thing very often.
Does he secretly think that magic makes you less likely to be good? No, that's not it, he did mean it. It's just he added it because he must have felt Harry needed to hear it.
"Thanks don't seem like enough for all you've done, so if you ever need help or like a clue to a case give me a call, you have my number," you offer sincerely.
"I... Best learn out of trouble before you decide you want to get into the buisness of looking for it," he answers with a smile to take a sting out of the words.
What the...? Oh, you actually hadn't been flirting that time, but it's not like you can say so.
Seriously there should be like a dedicated flirting channel, like maritime flags or something, you huff inwardly.
As you and dad get in the car he is quiet, just sort of looking at you, as if to consign to memory all the ways in which you had changed. He does not comment on your driving, which is apparently rare for dads given the stories you had heard from girls at school, but then about a third of the way there as you are stopped at a light he speaks up quietly.
"The part of Uriel's message he asked me to give to you alone was a request. He said not to
look into angels or heaven, or anything else that would reveal the mind of God in ways he does not mean to be revealed."
It feels like you had been struck by lightning, like you had been broken in three: One part Molly Carpenter dumbstruck that you are even hearing this, one part demon whirling with cold machinations and one part unshakeable wordless certainty older than the foundations of the world that you had the power and the
right to use it. And then you are one again human, demon and eldritch power, you have always been one, your voice comes out surprisingly even. "So you know about the crown then?"
"I know only what I have been told and visitations rarely explain themselves to human satisfaction," dad replies seriously.
"I have a... power to know one answer about anything I lay eyes on, besides the power itself, the. eyes in my flames." You had almost said 'spark of intelectus' but t he only one who had used that term was Lasciel and you did not know if was a giveaway of some kind that you talked to an angel. "I just didn't realize anything meant anything until now."
"Likely why this messenger came to your father and not to you Peerless Seer of Eternity," Usum is quick to point out.
"If you had refused his request you could then ask a question of his nature and secrets, being under your eye."
An archangel did not show up to meet me because he was afraid of what you might learn of him, the idea sounded preposterous on one level and perfectly reasonable and all the more terrifying on another. You have never been more glad for a light change in your life.
"Uriel also said..." dad hesitates, as if struggling to find the words. "If you agree do limit yourself like that it wold be part of my charge to mentor you as far as I am able."
Silence again.
"For the record I am really shaken right now," you say finally.
Dad smiles more than a little shaky himself, but he puts his arm around your shoulders. "Same here pumpkin, same here."
Do you accept the covenant that Uriel proposed on the behalf of Heaven?
[] Yes, Michael takes up his task of mentoring you among his other formal duties with the knights
[] No, you will not limit yourself thus (Lose Mentor; you are refunded 5 Freebie points; ???)
-[] Write in what you spend them on
OOC: Getting a Knight of the Cross as a mentor has more than just mechanical costs same as if you had a high generation vampire or a werewolf elder in WoD, but still if you do not want to take it there is a mechanical refund.
