I'd rather spend time engaging with a potential character than spend it sifting through the literally slimy refuse and echoes of what those bastards did to cause this. They're only worth paying attention to as examples of what not to do, and even then only barely. And since we usually aren't allowed to revisit whatever doesn't get picked in binary votes like this, I'd regret not learning about whatever's going on with the child more.

This does put a very different spin on things.
Instead of a spirit who just happens to be malicious, we seem to be dealing with a spirit who is reacting to what was done to them.
None of this make it right to what she does to people, but it does put it in different context, and that context is not really that different from, to use as an example, a river spirit who floods because their offerings and rituals were ignored one year.

We just had a chapter where Diao Linqin explained how her clan were the "pampered pets and beaten dogs" of the Hui, and how that was the reason for their keeping to Imperial pride. Another where Diao Hualing was interested in Su Ling's fox pyromancy divination, as it was similar to the Diao's own ancient Arts. She mentioned she knew where Su Ling was from, wanted to introduce her to people Su Ling would be interested in as well as her younger brother. And now presumably a Hui made a Diao desecrate their own shrines to their Great Spirit, presumably their ancient patron and source of their pyromancy. Were the Diao fox-blooded once before the Hui erazed their history? What could this mean for the Diao and Diao Hualing's plans for it?
We have narrative to suggest this but Ling Qi doesn't know this chapter's likely relation to that, which makes it non-actionable. We can't use it, we can't ask Diao Hualing or Diao Linqin. We can't use it as the key supporting argument that'd bring the Diao to our Weilu Moderate Emerald Seas Identity ideology that's central to our forming political faction. This is some really interesting stuff story-wise with the potential to become more so. This is how we drag Su Ling into our politics, like the horrible, horrible person we are, and keep her present in some storylines so she isn't left behind narratively.

We can try to keep digging through the echoes of the past, and that will almost certainly help somehow.
But personally i'd rather seek out what seems to be an actual person, who could offer more than just memories.
There is a change to learn about more than what was done, maybe find out what was before, or find a way forward that would be more than just trying to get rid of the symptoms of past transgeressions.

Su Ling is more about the individuals than the logic of politics. The small fox should be more significant to furthering her Way, it'd be more heartfelt when she sees it compared to the Hui torturing an entire community into a mockery of what it was.
