Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
hmm, seems to have happened early in the year, probably past month 3 at the end of the truce.

The tallest of the thugs, a boy half again Liu Xin's height went down with a falsetto scream as a dainty knee drove three times into his groin, ending with a sickening pop.
Yeowch! That hurt me.

*popping sound*

Her eyes flicked in his direction and the words died in his throat, his face going a blotchy red and white. "Hou Jin, fifth son of the fourth son of the Head of Clan Hou, Counts of the Eighth Peak in the Celestial Peaks. Prospects, mediocre. Status, Irrelevant. Be silent when your betters are speaking."
ah, of course, Peakaboos.

Xiao Fen's form blurred and his words cut out into a wet gurgle as her tiny fist buried itself in his throat. Hou Jin fell to his knees, gagging violently as the veins on his neck blackened and crackling frost spread across his skin.
jesus, she punched him through his throat. Would've been more fatal had it not froze.

Liu Xin nodded, his thoughts spinning as he tried to figure out just what the hell was going on. He hit upon an idea, a very worrying idea. He wondered if his mouth was going to get him beaten anyway. "Just uh, so you know. I'm not inclined to women." He'd heard noblewomen sometimes did things like that, and however strong she was he didn't intend to be anyone's toy.
looks like we have another gay character!

"I silenced trash because he did not know his place," Xiao Fen replied easily. "I stepped into the situation because you are my friend. Having spoken with my Mistress on the subject, I determined that this was correct action. Do you believe I erred?"

She was completely nuts, Liu Xin thought faintly. "N-no, friends are supposed to help each other out."

"Very good," Xiao Fen said, finally showing an emotion, a touch of satisfaction showing in the upward quirk of her lips. "Now tea. It is necessary for friends to share their non-vital interests."

"Right," Liu Xin said dizzily as they stepped out of the woods. Just what had he gotten himself into.
I love how direct Xiao Fen is. Hope he hangs around

Xiao Fen's dismissal of Hou Jin as irrelevant based on his position within his own clan was chilling because we are used to that tone and approach from the arrogant young master opposition to the protagonist but less so to it from allies.
It has been mentioned before, but Ling Qi and her allies carry the archetypes and manner of Xianxia antagonists more than they do Xianxia protagonists. Even from a shounen perspective, Han Jian or Xiulan would be the protagonist rather than either Ling Qi or CRX.

This is an critical part of what makes "nega verse" interpretations of Ling Qi so fascinating, as well as why she fits so well in the narrative of an antagonist for various crossover image. Kill La Kill being the example that is trotted out frequently, with Ling Qi having a great deal in common with Nui Harime when it comes how her opponents see her and how brutal fighting against Ling Qi is for the unprepared, all while acting far more like Nonan when it comes to spending time with CRX and her role amongst the Retainers.

Forge/Threads of Destiny is precisely what a Start of Darkness story would look like in any other typical Xianxia/shounen storyline and I for one love it.

"My Mistress ordered that I make a friend," Xiao Fen said matter of factly. "Having reviewed the disciples present this year. I have determined that you will be my friend. Your battle instinct and drive are admirable."
Wonder if they have a "Remedial Human-ing" class in the outer sect Xiao Fen could apply for...

Ling Qi threatened to stab out somebody's eye to get Lan Lan's location during the Outer Sect war and said his family wouldn't give two shits because their talent was low.

Ling Qi's not above some Kung Fu Mean Girls shit herself

That seems like the sort of class that Xiao Fen might offer to a few of her more interested cousins if Meizhen happens to spend a notable amount of time in Bai lands at some point. Now imagine what that class looks like. Savor it.

I will say, the fact that the Xiao are apparently aro ace by default makes a lot of sense when you think about what they have been selecting for, and it also offers an interesting additional bit of perspective both to the apparent tendency for homosexual Bai to use their assigned Xiao as sexual partners and Bai Meizhen's distaste for the practice.

I suppose it also means that Liu Xin and Xiao Fen wind up serving as beards for one another, to a degree. It's more important for Liu Xin's side, but Xiao Fen is sufficiently powerful and scary that she might well have attracted romantic attention from someone if she hadn't had an "obvious" romantic entanglement, and that seems like the sort of thing that she would have found annoying. There's a lot of people who might not accept "I'm aro ace" at face value (if she even bothered to tell them) but who would accept the (however unintentionally) implied "I have a boyfriend right here. You see how I treat my boyfriend? Do you really want to apply for the position?"

"Hey guys, let's go jump that commoner thug in the woods where the Elders won't step in."

"Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. I mean, it's not like our ambush will get turned around on us by a Peak Second Realm who will demolish us in a few seconds with barely restrained contempt. I sure would hate it if that happened."

"Ha, yeah. Sure is a good thing that I'm the grandson of someone mildly important whom no one would cross and that there aren't any ducal family members or important branch family members in our year. They'd have the clout and probably power to kick the shit out of all of you and nearly kill me and get away with a slap on the wrist."

"Good point boss. You're right; it sure is a good thing none of that will happen."

Facing as they were, only Liu Xin saw the strip of shadow peel away from the tree.

Everyone heard the horrifying noise as the boy raising the club's arm jerked to the side and fell limp at his side, dislocated and useless. His startled scream had the other's wheeling. A second crack, and black blur cracked across a disciples face, deforming his nose and sending teeth flying. A girl with a knife stabbed out at the blur, and her wrist bent backward with a hideous crack. The tallest of the thugs, a boy half again Liu Xin's height went down with a falsetto scream as a dainty knee drove three times into his groin, ending with a sickening pop.
Oh, hello there, Miss No Chill.

I really can't wait for her to become a main part of the story; we need more interactions between her and everyone else.

[X] Clockwork Blades (Cai Renxiang, Xia Lin, Xia Ren)

would be cool to see more of Cai Renxiang's perspective and interactions with people outside the sect since im assuming she is gonna be giving ling qi most of her missions once they leave for their own land and not just following her mothers orders.
