Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
So I talked a bit earlier how I think we should essentially give Biyu a joy for Expression, since I'd love for the Ling Clan to be Great Artists, Musicians, Poets, Dancers, etc. etc. I think it would be wonderful if all our family shared a love for well Expression.

Assuming you want expression you should choose the ones you like best.

[] Flute

This option is great because it gives Biyu something beautiful to share with both her older sister and her mom. It also sets up us potentially handing down our current flute to her once she starts cultivating. It would be a potent and personal gift. The downside is that there might be concern this stunts Biyus way by getting her to adhere too close to ours. I am less concerned about that since quite frankly I dont think she can travel down our way, but it is a potential concern

[] Drums
This option is a fun musical option for the rambunctious child she is. It is not quite as personal a gift as a flute, but it fits well with her energetic nature. It also avoids potential way concerns.

[] Dancing Shoes
We have some pretty good dancing arts, but we do not define ourselves as a dancer. But Biyu, energetic child she is, would probably love dancing and its a great way to get her to use her boundless energy. She Could be the Dancer to our Musician

[] Arts and Crafts set (including paints and the like)
This is the most different out of the three, but all children love art. This is a more sedate hobby, but lovely nonetheless.

Why are peeps voting for an encyclopedia anyhow? Seems like the cheezy boring choice.
She likes the outdoors. The picture book shows her more places than she can go. It gives something nonphysical that can give quality time for her and mother. It encourages her interests while also giving her something educational. There are a lot of reasons. Big picture books are a classic gift for a reason.

Realy though you will make her a nerdy scholar. I love nerdy scholars but thats what books mean.

Feed Biyu's imagination!

Broadly, I think all the attempts to shape her build too strongly right now are jumping the gun. Flute is really something that should be left for a few years.

Right now she'll be starting on her education. Learning to read and write is obviously very important. Five is also around the right age for her to start learning a bit of martial arts too. I wouldn't want to start on weapons though any time soon - that should again wait until she's older, and has built up the coordination and discipline.

Also remember she's five. Things will be hard for her. She probably won't have the discipline to do things for prolonged periods yet. Trying to push things like the flute too early could just make it hard for her to enjoy them. And once she's spent more time exploring things and learning, she and us will have a much better idea of what she's interested in. Let's not get carried away here.

I really doubt this type of reasoning. Mom is older wiser, and has experienced staff helping her out. She is not gonna make the same mistakes when raising Biyu as Ling Qi. This vote is about getting new interests/reiniforcing old ones. If we give a musical gift meta wise, this should make her more interested in music.

She doesnt need super long disciplined lessons, but music lessons can also be fun and age appropriate. This is an age where it is in fact good to learn music, and in general its fun for kids, though long hours of practice isnt. Forcing hours of long practice is wrong at age 5 but nobody is advocating this. I trust mom and nanny to be able to make sure she keeps up with music practice while still having fun.

Yeah, that learning bit is worthless arguement to me. This is a meta vote to see where we want to influence Biyu's future development.

Its why my votes went for
Kite - because flying and outdoorsy toy
Flute - starting a family tradition I guess?
Arts and crafts - early formation or another artsy focused build
Having a Book be there is us (gently) pushing Biyu to a boring political/diplomatic perso in my eye. Still important to have, but boring to have Biyu turn out into.

I like our musical Way a great deal, but I don't see why our entire clan should be all music, all the time, starting right now, no exceptions and no room to be a child. I want to see a direction for Biyu that also builds off her unique strengths and the way in which her different circumstances (which are in part our doing) make her different from her sister.

So: remember that other thing Ling Qi is known for, her uncanny luck with spirit beasts, and the fact that this is a part of her character that people voted to continue to emphasise with some of our Arts choices? I don't think a book will make her JUST a scholar. C'mon people, Ling Biyu, adventuring biologist who goes to live part time with various spirit beasts? It would put Jane Goodall to shame.

@Erebeal She's actually at the ideal age to start picking up an instrument.
Instrument dependent though. Like, the piano or recorder or violin could work (if they exist), but the flute is apparently best left till they're bigger.

Edit: apparently the issues are a) developing enough lung capacity (actually being able to make the flute make noise is apparently quite difficult, which wouldn't be encouraging to a five year old), and b) difficulty actually being able to hold and play it comfortably if they're too small, which can also lead to bad habits and posture issues (reminder that Biyu apparently takes more after our mother than us and is probably very small)
