... wait a minute. I wonder...

Nanoha's Linker Core style magic registers Grief as 'Ambient Mana' which is why she suffered backlash when attempting to utilize Starlight Breaker against the Witch Sachiel.

Carefully pursuing research along the lines of how Nanoha's Starlight Breaker collects 'Ambient Mana' can reveal a method of manipulating Grief outside of cleansing it with Grief Seeds.

Call me crazy or wishing too hard, but I'd done a look-see through older updates and found the Nanoha Control Room update that stated in plain terms that the Ambient Mana in the Witch Barrier was Dangerous to access. Knowing what I know of MGLN, re-reading this made me curious. If this pans out we might not only find a way to supplement Grief Seed cleanses but also get a method of actually weaponizing Grief...

Whether this is a good idea or not, I leave to the group to discuss.

Considering the fact that Sachiel ended up giving her a traumatic experience with its grief, I would say Nanoha will either need to learn how to deal with the negative backlash of grief or create a technique that stops it from being pumped directly into her system when she draws it out.

Nononono, not for her (and throwing Grief-magic at a Witch sounds like a bad idea, this is more for our non-Witch enemies)

For us. If we can manipulate our own Grief with something like Nanoha's Starlight Breaker, that could be our ticket to a non-standard cleansing method. I imagine it would take lots of time to make it something that breaks even, let alone actually results in us gaining as a result.

Granted, this is going to draw Kyubey's attention like nothing else if it pans out.

Well, this will be hard, but I agree that it would be worth it to make a grief seed free soul cleansing method. The most difficult parts will be getting grief out of the without sucking out the soul as well, and getting Nanoha to hell us design a method meant to work with our magical system instead of hers/

Here's a better blue(I hope)

Eldritch Abominations that are not Incubators, Witches or Familiars have appeared in Witch barriers before.

Magical Girls have fought these Eldritch Abominations and not known about it until they questioned the Incubator(including members of the Mitakihara quartet in alternate timelines).
The existence of familiars made it pretty inconsequential last time, so I just ignored the issue, but, regarding your definition from before ("Eldritch Entities: Beings that warp the world and minds around them and are incomparable with the laws of Homura's reality."), what did you mean by incomparable? Did you mean "unable to be compared; totally different in nature?" I ask because very few creatures can be readily compared to the laws of a reality, and most creatures that exist within realities can be compared to each other. As it is, lots of actual Lovecraftian horrors don't qualify for the definition.

If you actually meant "incompatible" or were trying to say "alien" (or something along those lines) as I previously assumed, then that's a different matter.

Going for broke on this line of Blue Truths.

Carefully pursuing research along the lines of how Nanoha's Starlight Breaker collects 'Ambient Mana' can eventually reveal a method of removing Grief from a Soul Gem that does not damage the Soul Gem nor endanger others nearby.

Perhaps just 'not endanger others nearby unintentionally'? Starlight Breaker's still an offensive spell, after all.

Carefully pursuing research along the lines of how Nanoha's Starlight Breaker collects 'Ambient Mana' is not sufficient to reveal a method of removing Grief from a Soul Gem that does not damage the Soul Gem nor endanger others nearby.

Studying Starlight Breaker can certainly help you develop safe Soul Gem cleansing alternatives, but you'd also need to do a lot of other research to have a chance at it...and I mean a lot.

Actually studying Soul Gems, for one thing.

Of course its going to take a lot of effort. I mainly started my Blues on this topic to see if we COULD go somewhere, then try and push to get things moving in that direction. Since Mementos can accumulate Grief without being active in some cases, the more we have the more vital it is we have a method of cleansing them that doesn't involve becoming a modern day warlord patrolling vast swaths of territory.

With any luck this will prompt starting research while we only have Memento!Kyouko's own Grief to juggle, rather then starting when we're, say, juggling seven different meters, Homura's included.

Edit: Because yeah, if we want to get everything we can out of this Memento Meguca system, we need an alternative. IIRC Mitakihara was struggling to support just the canon five from the main series when they were all together? Seeds are going to become impractical very quickly.

Still worth going for, that's one hell of a thing to potentially have.

10 minute warning. Current plan:

[Switch]Swear Ruki to secrecy and switch back to Kyouko.
[Nagisa] Hunt for Nagisa.
[Nanoha]Call Kyoko and inform her of the situation then have Ruki take Nanoha to their apartment.

  • [X] I was... nearby, but unable to fight myself. Kyouko is also nearby, but unavailable right now. There's more to her being here for the fight and me being unable to fight at the same time, but I don't fully inderstand it either, so I can't explain it to you right now. Just don't be surprised if the next time we meet Kyouko she doesn't remember what happened here and claims to have been somewhere else.
-[X] As for what that thing was, I have no idea. It seemed to have it in for me, but I don't remember seeing anything like it ever before and I'm positively sure it shouldn't be here. Things like that have been showing up with alarming frequency lately.
[X] Now, give me a minute to cleanse my Soul Gem and figure out what we're doing next.
[X][Switch]Swear Ruki to secrecy and switch back to Kyouko.
    [x][Nagisa] Hunt for Nagisa.
[X][Nanoha]Call Kyoko and inform her of the situation then have Ruki take Nanoha to their apartment.
[x][Other]Call Kyouko, Mami, and Sayaka for help searching for Nagisa.
    [x][Switch]Remain as Homura
    [x][Nagisa]Leave Nagisa alone.
[x][Nanoha] Just take her with you for now, you don't want to leave her behind while you find Nagisa. Afterwards? Eh... Kyouko knows how to stealfind a Hotel Room right?
    [x][Nanoha]Take her to Sayaka's house.
[x][Nanoha] Have Ruki guard her at the church. Besides, it would be useful to have someone there to let you know if Nagisa comes back.

It's almost like Memento!Kyouko predicted we'd crash on our own now that we actually have the chance to just... STOP for a second. Which would save her the hassle of getting into a shouting match with us.

Trying to Explain Again/Finding Nagisa
[Switch]Swear Ruki to secrecy and switch back to Kyouko.
[Nagisa] Hunt for Nagisa.
[Nanoha]Call Kyoko and inform her of the situation then have Ruki take Nanoha to their apartment.

You consider your options. There are plenty of ways to handle this, but...not too many good ones. You need to find Nagisa, for certain--you're not entirely sure why, but you know you want to keep her safe, and she knows you somehow. Having her killed in a mugging or hit by a car is not something you're willing to risk.

Likewise, you need to keep Nanoha safe. She's an extremely useful resource and, honestly, the idea of abandoning your childhood hero turns your stomach.

The problem, though, is that you're barely holding it together. You feel better now that you've cleansed, but--

Looking from Ruki to Nanoha, trying to figure out the best solution, you catch a flash of movement out of the corner of your eye. Quickly you spin on your heel, drawing a gun, and find yourself facing...nothing. Moments later, you catch another glimpse at the corner of your vision--a faint flash of pink, running out of your line of sight.

"Nope."

Ruki looks at you in confusion, "Nope what, Senpai? Is there something there?"

You shake your head, turning back to her, "...I can't take this anymore, Ruki. The world has turned upside down-"

As you hear your own words, you find yourself standing beside Madoka.

The ruins of Mitakihara surround you, wrecked by battle you've been waging. Overhead, Walpurgisnacht floats, the familiar, taunting laughter filling your ears. Madoka's bow is damaging the Witch, and you've managed to keep it from hurting her using your shield, but you're still at a drastic disadvantage--once, two Magical Girls could defeat Walpurgisnacht, but now--

A familiar is upon you, springing up from the ground. It thrusts a spear for you, and you quickly sidestep, raising your heavily enchanted Desert Eagle in one hand to blow its head off its shoulders, as usual. You're not terribly surprised as it merely stumbles back a step--Walpurgisnacht is as adaptive as any other Witch, after all, and improves its Familiars as the battle goes on.

Madoka's arrow kills the thing instantly, and you use the momentary lull to call a battleship from your shield and enchant it, directing it towards Walpurgisnacht with a flex of your will. You know it won't last long, of course; even as you watch, you can see dozens of gears erupt from beneath Walpurgisnacht's dress and fly out to crash into the battleship, only to sink into it.

You immediately feel Walpurgisnacht's numerous wills slamming against your own, trying to take control of the ship from you. Knowing you can't hold it long, you detonate the explosives you'd wired into the ship, sending Walpurgisnacht flying back as the blast pushes it away from you.

Madoka fires another arrow off, grimacing as she does so, "...At this rate, we'll need to turn the world upside-down--"

"Senpai? Are you...what's wrong? You look like--"

Ruki's staring at you, looking concerned, and you realize you can't handle this. Not right now. You need to get back home to Sayaka, relax for a while, and then sleep for several days.

"Told you so, Homura. Now move over. I've got this."

You sigh, smiling in spite of yourself. You're still not sure what to make of the whole Koko situation, but...at least she's back.

"Just a memory. I...I'm not exactly holding it together well right now, so I'll explain what's going on with Kyouko, but I need you to swear to me that you won't speak to anyone about this."

Ruki slowly nods, "...Alright, I understand. I'll keep this secret, whatever it is. I swear, Senpai, I won't tell anyone without your permission."

Sighing, you return her nod, "I--"

You glance down at Raising Heart. You would prefer to keep this secret for now. Telepathy isn't ideal either--Kyubey may be listening anyway, but he'll definitely hear over telepathy.

"This way, we'll talk inside. Nanoha will be fine for two minutes."

She hesitantly follows you just inside the Church, and you relax a bit as the door closes, "Alright. The best way to explain this is..."

"Just switch. I'll explain."

You bite your lip, truly uncomfortable with a conversation for the first time in a while, "...So. I don't know how this works, but...I can sort of...channel Kyouko."

She raises an eyebrow, "...I'm not quite sure what you mean. Can you summon her, or a copy of her, or something?"

You sigh, "...I'll just let her explain."

With those words, you call Kyouko's Cross from your Shield, and the world erupts in rose-red light, choir-song filling your ears as the unending ticking of clocks grinds to a halt.

As the light fades, you grab a stick of pocky and pop it into your mouth, looking around the Church with a bit of a grimace--you really wish you'd done more to take care of it, before you met Homura. You're going to have to rebuild every loop, now...or get this timeline's Kyouko to do it, maybe? You don't particularly like the idea, but...your Church is long gone. Sort of. Maybe. You're pretty sure that the other Kyouko is actually you too, but you're not sure how that works exactly.

Shrugging--it's not all that important, considering--you turn your focus to the rookie, who's staring at you in shock and confusion. She's...still a bit of a mess, honestly. Kinda worrying, how Homura censored out the empty eye socket without realizing it.

"...Hey, Ruki. I'm Kyouko. Err...Kyouko Alter. Kyouko Prime...wait, no, that's not right. Kyouko Akemi!"

'KOKO!!!,' Homura squawks angrily in your mind, and you chuckle. Her voice sounds a bit different, like this--like there's a undertone of something else, almost. A second, faint voice.

"Heh, she didn't like that one. Too soon, I guess. Got any ideas for a name for a parallel universe version of Kyouko sharing a Soul Gem with your Senpai?"

She slowly calms down, taking a deep breath, "...How about we just stick with Kyouko for now. How does this...work...?"

"I don't have a single clue! I mean, you need a memento--my Cross, Homura's Glasses--but I'm not sure how any of this actually works beyond that." You're lying a bit, but you need to keep Homura's secrets. She'd get angry if you spilled the beans on her time traveling, "Anyway, I need you to carry Nanoha back to...wait, you've never been to Homura's apartment. Uh...here..." You conjure up a quick illusion of a card with Homura's address on it, and hand it to her. She takes it.

"Take Nanoha to this address and give her to the other me to take care of. I'll call ahead and let me know the score."

The rookie blinks, "...Maybe Senpai should do that?"

You pause, thinking it over, "...Eh, fine." 'Homura, I'll--' You feel a sudden vertigo as you lose sight in your left eye, and suddenly you feel yourself reaching out for the telepathy network.

'Kyouko. A magical girl is going to be dropping off Nanoha. We were attacked again, near your Church. A girl who met us there--Nagisa--ran off during the fight, so I'm going to go find her and get her back to safety..'

Your own voice echoes through your mind in response, 'Wait, there's a new girl?'

'Yes. She's newly contracted. I'm teaching her the basics.'

Kyouko (thinking of yourself in the third person is weird) chuckles, 'Mami's gonna be jealous. Gotcha, I'll make sure they stay safe. You okay, Ribbons? Your voice sounds kinda...off.'

You get an impression of a mental shrug, and your other self projects a sigh, '...Well, whatever. Go find Nagisa. I'll watch out for your rookie.'

'Thank you, Kyouko.' The message carries an undertone of emotion--gratitude, warmth, love, and terror. Homura's not quite as good at hiding her feelings as she thinks. Not over telepathy.

You try your best not to turn jealous because of yourself. It's not like those emotions aren't there when she talks to you.

'No problem, Ribbons. Stay safe.'
As that message comes across, your vision returns to normal.

You smack your hand into your face, shaking your head. You'll never get used to this.

"Done. I'm gonna go find Nagisa. You grab Lasers and take her to that address. Tell no one, because this is way too weird to explain." Extending your hand, you help her back to her feet as she laughs, sounding more than bit hysterical.

Determined to get out of there as soon as possible, you smile, pat her on the head, and sprint out the door before jumping onto the roof, looking around for any sign of Nagisa--you don't spot her, though.

"She headed that way!" Ruki shouts from just outside the front door, pointing north.

You leap off in that direction by way of an answer, and begin hunting for her.

Detective Work. DC 40.

Following a trail of footprints and broken branches, you don't have much trouble finding Nagisa. She's stopped to hide behind a tree, but steps into view , "Homura needs your help at the Church. Some kind of creature attacked her, and she needs help."

You stroll up, smirking at the kid. She used to visit your Church every Sunday. You'd let her sit there and pray, but hadn't been willing to go and actually help her, back then. You hadn't even been willing to preach for her.

Stepping close, you pull her into a hug, "Glad you're okay, Nagisa. Don't worry, we already stopped it."

She stiffens at the contact, but then returns your embrace. It's nice, comforting someone like this. Helping.

"I...I'm so glad. I thought Homura was going to die, and...why does that scare me so much, Kyouko?"

Releasing her, you pat her head, "I don't know why, but you're right to be scared. Homura's a special person and an amazing friend, even if she'll never admit it. The world would be a lot darker without her."

'I have killed you before, and you know it. I still don't know why--' Anger, indignation, and guilt are a nasty cocktail, and you aren't going to leave her there to soak in it.

'I was already dead when you met me, Homura. Destroying a corpse isn't worth talking about. Just once, though, you managed to resurrect it, and that's worth more than everything else.'

Her only response is silence, and you accept it for now.

"Anyway, Nagisa, we should get you back. Witches and Abominations are dangerous, but being out alone at night is too."

She nods quickly, "I would like that. This place is scary at night."

Chuckling, youpick her up, "Guess you know about Magi now, so I'll carry you back. Hold on!"

She grabs on tight, and you jump, hurtling over the trees towards your Church.

"Anyway, things are complicated right now. For now, if you don't mind, don't bring up that I was here unless I say something first, okay? I'm supposed to be somewhere else, and I can't have anyone besides Homura and Ruki knowing I was here tonight."

She acquiesces, "I will not tell anyone, of course."

"Good girl. Alright, almost there."

You land in front of the Church and lead her inside, taking her back to her bed, "Alright. Get some good rest, Nagisa; this place should be safe enough, now that the monster's dead."

She nods, "I'll try. There was a white creature. It seemed..."

"Like the devil?"

"Yes."

"Yeah, that's Kyubey for you. Don't contract. Or, at least, don't do it unless you're absolutely sure you won't regret your Wish. And have talked to me and Homura first. Kyubey's good at tricking girls."

"I don't need your permission to--" You poke her in the forehead, cutting her off.

"You may not need permission, but you're not stupid, and Wishing without talking it over with us is stupid."

She pouts, and you chuckle, patting her head, "G'night, Nagisa."

"Good night, Kyouko."

You leave the room, closing the door behind you, "...Alright. That's done. Guess I'll...umm..."

No. Dont switch. We want to let Homura rest. At least for a bit.

...Actually. Isnt this a perfect time to hunt some witches?

Well I forgot Madoka knows about stuff so. actually we could crash at hers for a bit to sort ourselves out. It will also help Homura.

THEREFORE ONWARDS! TO THE MADOKAVE!

Homura still needs time off, and Kyouko needs to maintain the illusion of the address she gave Ruki anyway.

Wait, what? Did we tell Madoka about the loops? Hm. I think I might remember that. Maybe. Need to re-read some parts.

[X] Go Somewhere
-[X] Sayaka's House (She probably won't be up for Kyouko sleeping over.)

Even if Kyouko isn't sleeping over, I'd like some personal time between Sayaka and Kyouko. I'd like a better handle on how Sayaka is viewing things with Homura, and having a third party to talk to makes that easier. Homura can show up later on, when Kyouko leaves.

Aww, I forgot telepathy was a thing.

Also HELLO. Last Koko update had her at 405 Grief. Now she's at 54. How? Did our Witch of Faith make a mistake here by accident?

[X]Switch...

I may re-vote later to add a Go Somewhere part but right now I'm about to pass out. Also Koko will definitely fight us if we try to get her to switch again and like Crow said we WANT Homura to sit in the backseat for a bit and just chill the hell out.

We haven't seen Blueberry in almost a year, and the Homura and Sayaka interactions are some of my favorite.

I figure by the time we get back Ruki will have met up with Mami and Kyoko, so we can switch back once we get there. Alternatively Kyo can tell Sayaka not to ask questions and that Homu's coming down from a baaaaad trip and then switch back in front of her. Turn about and all that :V

--[x] Kidnap Sayaka on the way over. Sleepover time. And maybe a Godzilla movie marathon.

Let's see Homura stay crazy after a sleepover.

Interesting chapter. Homura using telepathy through Kyouko is definitely weird, but a good thing. Now would be a good time to go Witch hunting, but we don't know how the inventory space works between Memento Magica, so it might be the Grief Seeds Kyouko collects will disappear with Kyouko when switched to Homura unless Koko specifically leaves them out of her inventory for the time traveler to grab. Also, Sayaka is probably getting a tad worried about Homura for her staying out so late. So...going to Sayaka's has my vote.

The only problem is I don't know if we should switch here. Or back in front of Sayaka. It'll be a real pain if its in front of Sayaka as we have to then inform her about all the loops. And I really think we should bring her into the know, seeing as this Sayaka is very loyal to us and already knows Homura has been through the wringer by her experiences, regardless of if she actually knows about Homura's loops. I forget, what with Kyouko running off and then Mami having a breakdown in the restroom during the explanations at Red Lobster, but has Sayaka been Witchbombed yet? Or even Litchbombed?

Homura needs rest and more drama seems unwise with her instability atm.

Also school night and it is pretty late I believe. No kidnapping today should be had.

Madokas the one who'd be unruffled if we pop in and explain anyway and she basically recharges homus mindpower when near. Which could be real useful as we gather our bearings about this all.

Thinking we should definetly hunt tho. We really have been stalling on that front and our resources run low.
