Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

You don't use shit like that for training.
Their literally walking superhumans, for them its not as dangerous. You have to remember that these kids are not normal durability or pain tolerance. They literally walk off shit that would kill most people and thats before they actually get even close to strong for their age.

Question!

Where was is said that To Know Oneself will lock us out of the chunin exams? Logically, I would think showing more maturity in preparing would make it more likely for Kurenai to enter us into the exams than the alternative no?

Becoming a Chunin isn't just about combat ability or mission count after all. In sheer combat power Shikamaru pails to Sasuke, Naruto, Neji, etc... but he got the promotion instead because his tactical choices and judgement were on point.

Of course, I could be wrong but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That might be my fault. I didn't mean to imply it locked us out.

When I said that 'Into the Lion's Maw' would put us on the track for the Exams, what I meant was that if we pulled off 'Into the Lion's Maw' we would become more well-known and it would be more likely that any attempt/petition to put us in the Chunin Exams would be more likely to succeed. Someone not Kurenai(IE: one of the other higher ups) would possibly float the idea.

Whereas, if we hang back and do the mature thing, we're putting more distance between ourselves and anything that's going to get us into the Forest Of Death(That's training ground 44) while it's infested with body snatching Snakes. While we probably wouldn't be a target, it's not a healthy place to be.

That's all. I don't want us to be the guy that gets Warfed by an insomniac raccoon, grabby snake, or one of the Sound 4. So hanging back, getting ready, and bursting onto the scene later when we're able to handle it feels more natural.

To Know Oneself is clearly the smart option, but Into the Lion's Maw sounds like it might be a Tora mission and we did predict that our first mission would be capturing a "war beast... Something big and dangerous that the village needs captured" so...

[X] Into the Lion's Maw

Plus, y'know, making the right choice all the time doesn't make for a particularly interesting narrative.

I assumed because the Chunin exams are in 6 months and iirc there is a mission requirement to enter, no?

[X] Into the Lion's Maw

My thought on it if we refuse is that it'd weaken team cohesion, because the rest of the team wants to do it. By going on training, and THEN going on D-ranks, they're going to just assume we're an ass, because when the D-ranks finally happen we'd be overprepared.

By taking the D-rank NOW and getting the team's collective butt kicked, we build camaraderie and immediately give them both a reason to invest into meeting us halfway. Which is good because we don't want a "meh we can take em" when the inevitable Mis Ranked C Rank happens

[x] To Know Oneself

Teams are there for kids to benefit from the training and wisdom of jounin sensei, why dismiss that for D ranks? o_O

[X] Into the Lion's Maw

Going to go with veekie's argument, getting out butt kicked early might be good.

On the downside there is the slight possibility we might succeed which would be problematic.

[X] Into the Lion's Maw

It offers an immediate relationship gain with our team just for accepting it, with the possibility of a further gain if we succeed. Quite frankly, we need that right now.

The problem with all the arguments here is that they seem to want to fail, which hurts our relationship with Kurenai. If we take To Know Oneself, it's significantly harder to fail and hurt our relationship with Mariko, Kiba, and Akamaru.

Problem is mostly if we fail we lose our relationship with our Sensei , if we succeed we are proving our team that they are right in not training and are actually not helping them because we are encouraging them to take risks and be overconfident.

Plus it will be funny to see the expressions on the other team's faces when they're complaining about their D-ranks and we can say we have been getting great training from our sensei. :p

Trials by fire are hilarious, but are best saved for when they're not the first resort
Correction: trials by fire are hilarious, except when they happen to us. :D

Locks us out of the Chunin exams but lets play ball and become her fav student.
I don't think it will really lock us out. I checked the manga, the only requirement is that we need to have done AT LEAST 8 missions. And I assume Kurenai would want at least one of this to be c-rank. We have AT MOST 6 months (if I remember right the exam is held twice yearly), probably a bit less. Still it should be enough.

I doubt this training will take more than a couple of weeks, a month at the very most, and we can do 1 d rank a day once Kurenai deems us ready, and a short c-rank in less than a week if all goes well.

We're also so close to getting the chunin title (from the achievement), just 3 more skills to raise!

There's also the fact that it's not necessary for us to be READY for the chunin title to enter the exam, otherwise No canon rookie team would have been entered. It's also a learning experience, a chance for growth, and the exam being in Konoha makes it a bit safer than it would otherwise be. Seen as we don't know how long it would be before the next exam was held here again..

Honestly I think unless we show ourselves as COMPLETELY incompetent,we'll be nominated for the exams. The fact that it's held in Konoha probably lowers our required level of ability to be entered by quite a bit, simply because our sensei would reasonably believe it to be safer than entering in, say, a suna held exam. Or even worse, a Kumo/Iwa held one.

If neji could become jounin by 16, surely we can as well!

Only 8 missions required, though it's HEAVILY recommended you have more under your belt..

Still, if Kurenai thinks we're ready that's really all that is required, as long as the hokage agrees.
