Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

[X] To Know Oneself
-[X] Are we? Are we really ready? We may each have confidence in our own power, but do we have confidence in each other? Frankly, I'm still having trouble have confidence in you Kurenai-Sensei, given your method of testing us. An ambush does not build trust.

[X] To Know Oneself

I mean, not only that Sun Tzu quote but also that seems to be our trainer's thing. Our test was a journey to the center of the self, our only advantage over most people(aside from donations from readers like you!) is that we've got a status screen and achievements. This is kinda our thing too. We're pretty much the Teacher's Pet in general, so it's completely in character.

There's the (small) chance that we can unlock Brick-Chan, too. So, that's two possible achievements on this track. On the other hand we'd be taking a much bigger risk with the "Just do a job" thing.

That said, the "Complete a D-Rank" is slightly more impressive, and feels like it'd be more likely to get us on track for The Exam. Which, I personally don't want to be anywhere near. Yes, we'd probably completely no-sell the Genjutsu after spending several months with the Genjutsu master and our own skills.

But also, yeah, as Hangwind said, we are currently in a state where we've got no real confidence in/understanding of each other. And our crazy Genjutsu wielding teacher who may be ordered at some point to lock ourselves in our mind to control the "unstable bloodline" that we probably seem to have from the outside.

Looks like Daisuke is elected to be the voice of restraint and reason on the team. You don't take a team who have never trained or worked together on a mission if you can avoid it.
I mean technically d-ranks are suppose to BE the teamwork training.
Or rather a major supplement.

[X] Into the Lion's Maw

Here's my reasoning, while it is likely that D ranks could be different from what we expect from Canon (just like Jonins) they still have to be simple enough that normal genin can do them, maybe we won't see missions like painting fences (that does seem like an incredible waste of manpower for trained soldiers, I'm sure there are some companies that could do the same with lower rates) but, even if it is a real mission....that's sort of the point, we should be able to do it.

there is a second, more important reason: building up team relationship, more importantly this is something that will happen whether we succeed or fail, a successful first mission would do wonders for team spirit, and even failure is more tolerable if it is shared, meanwhile if we block them here they will wonder what would have happened had we not stopped it?

Granted I understand why people want to be careful and not take risks, but really this IS the kind of risk we should take, I mean what's the worst that could happen? Clearly it isn't going to be dangerous (or at least Kurenai can handle any unforeseen circumstance) otherwise Kurenai would put her foot down and not even give us the chance, sure we could be humbled but honestly? If we fail that is probably a good thing, at least our team will be more careful in taking risks when it actually matters.

-[X] we may all be skilled, but we are not used to working as a team. We need to be a team before we can begin missions

I'm pretty sure that D-Ranks are, inherently, a waste-of-manpower. They are by nature things of extravagence, people with more money than they need paying through the nose for the privilege of getting a Ninja to do their chores.

Question!

Where was is said that To Know Oneself will lock us out of the chunin exams? Logically, I would think showing more maturity in preparing would make it more likely for Kurenai to enter us into the exams than the alternative no?

Becoming a Chunin isn't just about combat ability or mission count after all. In sheer combat power Shikamaru pails to Sasuke, Naruto, Neji, etc... but he got the promotion instead because his tactical choices and judgement were on point.

Of course, I could be wrong but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Or rather a major supplement.
A supplement only in that it allows them to work together under supervision and low stress conditions.
It doesn't in and of itself represent training. Not when people are paying cash money for your services.

I mean, capturing Tora is a D-rank.
And much as people scoff the damn cat is the property of the Fire Daimyo's wife. Damaging it would be a diplomatic incident.

We employ adults with equipment to capture escaped animals without damage. They are supposed to do it unarmed.
You don't use shit like that for training.

Throwback Post
She's not an elite Jounin though. She's a newly minted one. She's a green Jounin.
She's young not green.
Youngest of the four elite jounin-sensei.

Green would be Kakashi at Kannabi Bridge.
I mean Ves can do what ever he wants but certainly in Canon she was a newly minted green Jounin at this point, if Ves has said she's an elite Jounin then fair enough. Otherwise I'm just going to assume the canon info is right.
Note that in the translation I read, Itachi addresses Kurenai in their only encounter as Kurenai-sensei, a term of respectful address he doesn't use for any other jounin in that fight.

Not Asuma. Not Kakashi. Not Gai.

Furthermore she was entrusted with the care of three clan heirs. And she didn't have a Hokage for a daddy or a teacher like Asuma or Kakashi. She's also the only other Leaf nin besides Hiruzen, Orochimaru and I think Itachi with a 5 ranking in genjutsu.

Ninjutsu and taijutsu are flashier to animate. And she wasn't a major character. But characterizing her as green is inaccurate.

Normally, I might favor the chance for a 'team bonding experience' that the 'Lion's Maw' promises. Unfortunately, Mariko just proved that she learned relatively little of the many things impressed upon her the day before. At least in regards to working together.

Even as she's insisting the Team take a mission, she's actively undermining the Team due to her literal childishness.

If it were just Daisuke, I might say sure, go get Tora, see if you can stumble on anything interesting along the way. That ??? looks like it might be slightly amusing if nothing else.

But it's not just Daisuke. Because it's Mariko and Kiba who are also on the team, Daisuke's going to have to learn how to be the sub-leader to Kurenai. Which means going with the reasonable choice instead of going along with their habitual overconfidence.

This is a safe place to fail, but it's a better place to start taking our Sensei's lead in how to be a good ninja.
