Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
That would destroy the thread. That's Exodia levels of obliteration right there.
Destroy the thread? Don't be silly. The thread would merrily keep on kicking. The only difference would be that a small but significant fraction of the player-base would start saying things like "why did we choose X, again?" or "we wouldn't have had this problem if we hadn't chosen X!" or "you know, I'm coming to think that X was a mistake..." around every other chapter or so.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. There wouldn't have been a choice, because it would have been author fiat. That's what I was quoting.

Just read the update, solid.

For all their social perception, I think Six is missing something here.

It's natural for them to do so, it's in their nature as a muse to speak Truth to Power, and no surprise that her impression of the Cai would be colored by the collective Dreaming of man, but consider for a moment what it must be like to be the perfectly woven civilization which presents Herself to her lessers as Cai Shenhua.

Though she cannot now accept it, when she was a Cyan forging her Way she surely knew that the world was a chaotic place full to the brim with bickering, corruption, and inefficiency.

After all, the only people who walk such a path are those intimately familiar with and disgusted by such chaos.

Yet despite the fact that she rules a province that comes nowhere near meeting the standards one would expect from a being Woven of Light in Perfect Order, she does not purge the land of corruption to the point that cities are ruled by Greens, nor does she stamp her feet innefectually.

How? Let's consider the perspective of someone close to her.
Theres an interesting insight in that(and also a missing Bracket effed your whole post).
Most Whites change the world in some incredibly subtle way via ascending and becoming a local law of physics, after which they cannot interfere in the mortal world without severe consequences. Most of them get there with enough time that they have to spend a fairly large portion of their remaining time preparing for ascension and the other half of that doing Clan Head Things.

Shenhua has more options because of her sheet youth. She has a thousand years more to spend carving mortal society by mortal means. And the thing with mortal means is that you can enact wider, broader changes than with immortal means at the cost that it can be unmade...but Shenhua will live long enough that when she ascends, there will be absolutely nobody in her province who had not grown up with her as their Duke.

And tradition can be almost as strong as a law of physics.
Shenhua's position is not that of an inheriting Duke. She's inherited a province that's only one on paper.

She's going to need to make like a founding clan and BEAT order into them. Carefully.

Childbirth and pregnancy is slightly metaphysical here. Yrsillar's comments that making a kid requires some metaphysical male and some metaphysical female point that way, at least. So I wouldn't be surprised that having a kid is hard on the cultivator no matter how self-realized they are.

While infant and maternal fatality rates are nearly zero among the nobility and generally at around modern European levels for common cultivators, pregnancy can still be difficult and draining, at least in its later portions, as you point out in FoD the fetus isn't just siphoning off material nutrition after all, there's a spiritual component too.

That said things get weird and highly individualized at the highest levels, and some cultivators can find it more difficult than others depending on their Way.

So, would a cultivator that based her Way on fertility or motherhood still be penalized by it ?
Or would being pregnant and giving birth actually count as cultivation for her ?

More seriously, since the child literally siphons the mother on a spiritual level, wouldn't that make the child pre-disposed to follow the same Way as it's mother ? I mean on a level beyond simple genetic issues.

Ling Qi was thankful. She supposed she should be thankful that the surreality of the words had shaken her out of her fugue. "...I will take your words under advisement," she said faintly.

The dimmed light around her liege brightened for a moment, and the other girl nodded, seeming satisfied.

Just noticed but...Renxiang literally brightens here. And she was dimmed from her bad mood earlier :3

That would become a real big clan.

I've got to wonder though, how many children are born to White cultivators? I mean, whites are already phenomenally rare and when they reach that stage they're probably past the point of seeking to have children of their own.

So is Renxiang different not just for being crafted by the Duchess, but also because her very existence was molded and influenced by the Duchess from before birth? Notwithstanding the changes the Duchess made to Renxiang, was her domain and development already limited due to who she was born to?

It also brings into focus how Clans can create well-trod paths of cultivation. It's not just that they have arts that are focused on a specific path of cultivation, it is also that their children are influenced to be more able to pursue that path due to the nature of how people are born in this world.

Given how stark the Cai domains we have seen are, it's going to be interesting to see how the clan develops.

Given that pregnancy is still unpleasant even as a high ranking cultivator, I wonder how many mountains are going to be leveled when Renxiang's sister is born?

So I've been wondering for a while now just how distorted our view of Mama-Cai is.

Renxiang seems incredibly paranoid about her. As in, her opinion lacks some measure credibility.

Given what we'd heard at the time Mama-Cai coming along and telling us about her new kid seemed pretty worrying. With what we'd heard there was a justified fear she might kill and recycle Renxiang if she didn't measure up.

But at the same time, with what we have actually seen from her and the way she treats her husband and lover, that doesn't really follow. There's a fair chance that she genuinely just wanted to have another kid and told Renxiang about it because, you know, as her first born that's pretty relevant.

This isn't to say she isn't uncompromising, or that she doesn't need to be treated with serious caution. As a White her perspective is inhuman by definition. But that doesn't mean Renxiangs view of her as an IQ 900,001 unfeeling, emotional less, murderous manipulator is completely accurate or even much of a danger to us and her.

yeah I love those moments
Wonder if a thing about the whole Light cultivation is to be very direct and honest about your actions.
Which would put Shenhua in a different light.
She's not super oppressive, she has opinions on what is proper and NOTHING she sees is proper, so everyone feels her Judging them as inadequate.
She's not doing some crazy ploy with her romance, she's just direct and up front about her feelings.
Renxiang is not some tortured masterstroke, she genuinely wants whats best for her child and since nobody else can object she BUILT her child to be the best that she can be.

Meanwhile everyone else conspiracy theorizes like they are Overlord characters looking at Momonga

I think you're right about Renxiang thinking her mother is more mechanical than she really is, which is understandable because that's how her mother made her. Shenhua is a very rational being but she's not without emotions, though we've yet to see anything that couldn't be acting. It's just that she always has a practical reason for what she does.

There was never a reason for her to outright kill Renxiang. It makes sense to have multiple children, to refine the method of producing them and to be able to pick the best of the variable differences between them. It's not like Shenhua is planning on any of her heirs inheriting her within a millennia, it's their uses that interest her. In this latest chapter the Cai were described as an "unstoppable forward momentum" towards improvement, why would Shenhua ever stop at one child when the first already is mostly loyal and adequately capable. Each will be better than the last.

Renxiang wasn't worried that she'd be killed, she realized that she wasn't secure in her top most position in the Cai from which she has intended to improve the world, and that her mother wasn't satisfied with only her, which may be a fault on Renxiang's end. And that another child would have to suffer the same or similar treatment inflicted on her by her mother.

Well not actually a fault on Renxiang's end. Her mom perceives a flaw in her maybe, but none if it can be her fault... just like any parent who mistreats their kid in anyway because of some flaw they see in the kid--its never the kid's fault obviously. Honestly the last few posts have been defending Shenhua, asserting that she cares about her daughter in the way a mother would...While its true we've yet to see any views of Shenhua from people who don't find her terrifying, until I'm shown differently my view of her isn't really gonna change. Maybe you just tend to lose a lot of your humanity when you become that powerful but either way, Renxiang has probably had a tough childhood. Probably not a lot of maternal love while growing up, just an incredibly heavy amount of expectations and experiencing Mom's terrifying aura frequently.

Fun thought just occurred to me: Duchess Cai probably has significantly less experience ruling than the other Ducal leaders. Oh sure, she's not inexperienced from a mortal perspective, especially given how much cultivation strength boosts productivity. But the others probably have spent multiples of her age governing with the same productivity boosts. Training and developing their own bullshit tier governing skills. And for extra fun probably spent nearly that long learning governing at the feet of the previous Ducal leader

And that's all before we get into fun of the Emerald Seas being a fractious political mess.

One has to keep in mind how the Zheng rules over Ebon Rivers considering how notorious the Huang, a Count clan, can be. Yet their province is one of the most peaceful ones despite how loose their hierarchies are, their ducal clan also being one of the strongest, probably having more than one White.

Then we look at both the Xi and Hui who had millennia to fix and rule over Emerald Seas, yet they were straight up incompetent at it. With Shenhua who took only a 100 years of ruling and administering to apparently make ES a better place. This is the same Shenhua who outwitted a King in intrigue during a tournament.

The Zheng I think actually gets away with it by formalizing a lot of their conflicts. They even do wife raiding, and whatnot. Its stable on the large scale because individual clans do whatever the hell they want.

The Emerald Seas personally sounds like they were managed by Perfect Divination Administration by the Weilu...then when they were gone the whole thing collapses because it was dependent on PtV chain reactions to stay stable and maximally productive.

Turn 4: Arc 4-1 A path Forward
Cultivation always made time fly by.

It was frustrating, Ling QI could admit. One could spend time whirling and dancing among the faded stones of a long dead city, to the music of dreams and the cheers of her spirits, and days could pass by without her noticing. Only Hanyi's declaration of boredom and Sixiang's sheepish agreement that they had lost track of time allowed her to pull herself free from the raucous cheers of the revel's phantoms.

The cultivation of spirit and body was no different. She knew if she was not careful, she could lose whole weeks to her efforts, drinking in the qi of the stars and shaping it through spirit and body. Still, these were not new problems. As she advanced it became easier to lose hours instead of minutes, but it remained an issue that she had solved before. Ling Qi was careful to break up her cultivation with time spent on the real world. She studied the lines of the noble families of Emerald Seas, she took trips to market with Xiulan, Meizhen or both, and stopped by Li Suyin's home to offer encouragement as the girl prepared for her final push to realm breakthrough.

She spent time at home, coaching her Mother through the first steps of physical cultivation, or taking her turn to read bedtime stories to her little sister. Zhengui and Hanyi helped as well, though it was mostly the latter. Left to his own devices Zhengui could take day long naps without missing a beat. Hanyi's energy and wandering attention was good for keeping him active though.

Illustrious Phantasmal Festival: B
Duration: Long
The foundational technique from which all others in the art arise. The user gathers their qi and the memories of their night of revelry and expels them through every available channel in a rush of power and gleaming many colored mist. Within Close range centered on the user, ghostly dancers ever shifting in form coalesce from the midst in a riot of color, laughter, music and movement. Amidst the revel the user is but one figure among many, and in its ever shifting tides, only those of sharp eye can even attempt to reach or strike the user directly. Within it's confines the senses of enemies are confused, penalizing perception. This technique may be renewed as if it were D rank at instant speed at the end of its duration. This technique allows for stealth and is an illusion effect, affecting all senses. The festival counts as an opponent for the purposes of determining multiattacker bonuses.

Lunatic Whirl: C
Duration: Persistent
Usable only while Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is active. The ghostly dancers gather around an intruder in the festival, laughing, singing and demanding a dance, forcing them to join the revelry. The dancers seize their arms and hands, dragging them through the chaotic revelry. Though the dancers will do no harm to their captive, the frenetic pace of the revelry is highly draining, and victim finds their qi dribbling away, siphoned to the user while the sights and sounds of the revel cloud their minds and steal the strength from their limbs. So long as their hands lie in the grasp of the dancers, they will also find the meridians in their arms blocked and unusable. Each usage of Lunatic Whirl may target up to three enemies, no more than six enemies may be under the effect of Lunatic Whirl at a time.

Joyous Toast: C
Duration: Immediate
Usable only while Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is active. The guests of the festival raise their voices and cups and stamp their feet in joy, roaring encouragement for the user and their allies and jeering at their foes. The next music, dance or art based technique used by those affected is treated as if it is one rank higher for determining effects.

Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer: C
Duration: Short
Having begun to understand the nature of the dreams, the user flits from place to place, shrouded in the phantoms of paths not taken. While active the users speed is increased significantly. Techniques which would still hit the user have a chance(decreasing based on the attackers perception) to simply fail, shattering instead some of the dreamlike phantom images the user is shrouded in. Each use of this technique generates two 'charges' which do not stack with additional uses.

Of course, she couldn't spend all of her free time on fun and study. She had spent all of her Sect points in the month before, so now she dedicated time to earning more, so that she could once again peruse the more powerful elixirs and pills turned out by the Sect. More than that though, every night the moon stared down at her, as if in expectation, but her meditations brought no new insight, and Ling Qi found her eyes drawn to the table where she had set up the map of the Sect. There was somewhere that she needed to be, her instinct told her, and the map would be key.

Her wandering through the Sect lands proved profitable enough, she discovered a breathtaking series of cliffs, where wind spirits flew and played through funnel like holes worn in the rock, that made the land ring with natural music, and deeper in the mountains, she found an isolated basin, filled near to the brim with water, forming a crystal clear lake of unnatural stillness.

Few beasts were foolish enough to attack her now, so Ling Qi found herself gathering less disagreeable reagents as she traveled for later sale. It was a minor sum, hardly necessary with the windfall she had received for selling that disturbing mirror, but even so there was no point in waste if she had the opportunity.

Most of her time searching the Sects lands however was spent following the strange tingling sensation in the back of her mind that grew more potent every time she sat down to cultivate. She sought through one map marker after another, the first markers turned up a few crumbling ruins, little more than a few broken stones still laying in the same vicinity.

However, when she returned home to look at the map again, she found her eyes drawn to a marker that she was quite sure had not been there before. It hardly stood out, a single mountain peak surrounded by stylized 'eight' characters. She supposed that it was as close to a sign as she was going to get.

Ling Qi searched the whole of the mountain, enhancing her senses with her every art, even aided by Sixiang however, she found nothing special, no mysterious temple at the peak, nor any strange formations or vestiges of dream. Indeed, there was only one thing upon the whole of the mountain.

"You're sure you don't remember anything about this place?" Ling Qi asked suspiciously as she alit on the crumbling cliffside.

"I've got nothin," Sixiang confirmed on the wind, peering out from behind her eyes.

"Hmph, it's so dirty," Hanyi huffed as materialized off to Ling Qi's left, her bare feet kicking off the edge of Zhengui's shell where she sat.

"There's nothing even a little tasty looking here," Gui confirmed dubiously, peering back and forth. "At least the last place had the tasty moss."

Ling Qi huffed out a small laugh, remembering the comical sight of Gui awkwardly gnawing on a chunk of rock, trying to get at the moss clinging to it without filling his mouth with pebbles. Peering ahead, she could not disagree with their assessment. A crumbling path, missing more than half of its cobblestones lead back into what looked to have once been a grove of cherry trees. Now only a single sad and withered specimen rose from the moldering logs and stumps that characterized the rest.

Much like the grove, the structure set in the back of the ruined grove was no grand ruin, just a crumbling foundation and a partial frame, built of wood so old that it was halfway to being stone. Ling Qi felt her eyes tingle as she activated her arts, but there truly was nothing here, no formations, no spirits, no more qi than any other place in the world.

"Zhengui, Hanyi, follow me to the end of the path, then keep watch okay?" She said absently as she began to walk toward the ruin. Her map and her instincts had lead her here, so surely there was something.

With her spirits affirmations in her ears, Ling Qi began to search the ruined building. Leaving Hanyi and Zhengui at the end of the path, she began to pick her way through crumbled wood and fallen roof tiles, sweeping her gaze across the debris in search of anything of interest. Eventually her search lead her behind where the building had been, into an overgrown yard. Here she found an artificial pond. It's bottom was lined with tiles in a mural depicting the cycle of the moon. Many tiles were cracked or missing however, water weeds and muck pushed crumbling stone apart.

Frowning, Ling Qi peered down into the water…

"It's taken you long enough Ling Qi," a teasing voice whispered, tickling her ear with its closeness.

Ling Qi spun around in a flash, alarmed at the strange floaty feeling spreading through her body, the mist that seemed to have consumed everything more than a meter away, and the strange clouding of her vision by strands of glittering starlight, only to hear a surprised yelp and a splash. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw something bewildering. She saw Sixiang, fully physical climbing out of the pond, spitting water and looking rather put out. Then she became aware of the source of the strands clouding her vision.

She was standing backward inside of her own body, which stood frozen in perfect stillness, just like the world around them. She heard tinkling laughter and finally looked back up to see three figures resolving in the mist. To her right stood Xin, giving her an amused but apologetic smile. She wore her gown of red and blue, and her silver hair hung loose blowing in a phantom wind. Directly in front of her was a tall and willowy woman, clad in pale grey silk, with her long ink black hair tied back in a braid that wrapped twice around her neck, and hung down from shoulder. Her gown was a gauzy thing of billowing silk, cloaking the movements of her limbs. Behind the woman's black veil, only a wide grin was visible. Last of all, to her right was a matronly woman with glittering eyes, so much like Sixiang, save for her age and overt femininity. She wore an elaborate gown with a high feathery color, her hue changing hair woven into an complex web of ornaments.

"Do not tease the girl, a lady is free to be fashionably late," the rightmost spirit said lightly.

"Hmm, I thought I heard something, but you didn't say anything, did you Hidden?" The veiled spirit asked in a sing song voice.

"Oh do stop, Grinning, it is hardly unheard of for a human to be aligned with three of us," Xin said, her manner every inch the put upon older sister. "I am glad you made it Ling Qi, it would hardly do for you to waste your potential with an incomplete cultivation art."

Ling Qi quickly glanced around her, unsettled by the stillness of the misty world she had found herself in. Glancing to her side, she allowed herself to be comforted by the sight of Sixiang climbing out of the pool, dripping wet. Their expression was one of disgruntlement and not fear. It struck her as odd that all the world would be frozen, but the pool was not, in fact, looking back, een now the waters had stopped moving, ripples freezing in time. Had they really…

"If you do not use your world bending power for a bit of fun now and then, there isn't much point to it," The veiled spirit said lightly. "Don't tell me you've forgotten that."

Ling Qi began to reply, but paused. "...No, I haven't. Where are my other spirits?"

"Bold as brass," the Grinning Moon mused. "Let it not be said that you haven't changed in good ways as well."

"Zhengui and Hanyi have not been harmed," Xin said soothingly. "That said, Dreaming, if you would…?"

"Of course, we can afford a few more guests," the third spirit said, dipping her head. Somewhere inside her voluminous sleeves, a pair of fingers snapped.

Ling Qi blinked as a sudden weight pressed down on her head, followed by a squeaky yelp as it fell off. Reflexively, she reached out to catch it, and found herself staring down at Zhengui, shrunk to a size only barely larger than he had been at hatching.

"Wh-Huh?" Gui chirped in confusion.

"Why am I, Zhen little again!" his other other half hissed in distress, peering around. "Big Sister, what has happened?!"

"Serves you right," Hanyi huffed at her side. "Auntie Xin is messing around again huh?" Ling Qi almost did a double take when she looked down at her other spirit though, patches of her skin were blackened and cracked, particularly on her feet and legs, but… Hanyi didn't seem uncomfortable.

"Nothing physical about where we are right now," Sixiang said quietly, as if reading her thoughts.

"Auntie Xin, huh?" The Grinning Moon said in amusement. "The new you is a real homebody. I wonder, did you see this fate for yourself, Archivist of Vice?"

"Some of the best things in the world come to us as surprises," Xin replied evenly. "I will thank you not to use that name however, little sister. I have a secret or two that I am sure you do not want aired after all."

As the Grinning Moon raised her hands in mock surrender. Ling Qi cleared her throat. "Ah…. honored spirits, are you all really...um," she struggled to articulate her feelings, it boggled her mind that three great spirits would come together in one place for her."

"My Sixiang has given you a glimpse behind the curtain has she not?" The dreaming moon asked, raising an eyebrow. "Each of us are only local spirits, actor's masks through which our greater selves might peer, and even then, this is not the whole of our being."

"Time and space can be a funny old thing when you cut out the material," the Grinning Moon said lightly. "So worry not, I've still got an eye the province's urchins and sneaks."

"You are not even interrupting dinner," Xin said. "For which I am glad. I managed to drag that old curmudgeon out of his workshop for once."

Ling Qi felt herself relax at least a little, brushing her fingers across Zhen's head as she used too when he was actually this size. That was at least a slightly less intimidating prospect. "What is all this about then?"

"You have nearly completed the Eight Phases Ceremony," Xin said solemnly.

"The time has come to mold the next step in your journey," the Dreaming Moon continued matching her tone.

"No more aping of the eight, but rather, forging your own," the Grinning Moon said seriously, before shooting a sly look at Dreaming and adding in a much more irreverent voice. "Of course, there really should only be two of us."

"Are you of all spirits, decrying a follower for a bit of indecision," the Dreaming Moon asked blandly.

"...Sisters," Xin sighed. "Can we not maintain at least a little bit of decorum."

"Wrong grouping for that!" The Grinning Moon laughed.

At Ling Qi's side, Hanyi rolled her eyes. "I guess all aunties are silly huh?"

"I still don't know what's going on," Gui grumbled petulantly, glancing up to Zhen jealousy as the little snake leaned into Ling Qi's absent petting.

"You don't even know," Sixiang sighed.

Glancing at the three incredibly potent spirits before her bickering like any other trio of sisters in the world, Ling Qi felt her own patience for decorum slipping away. The part of her that remembered just what they were wondered if that was the point. "So… what do I need to do?"

"Why you get to participate in our little night out," said the Grinning Moon, spreading her arms wide.

"We will show you scenarios, and allow you to make decisions, which will be the foundations of your own phase," XIn elaborated.

"Do not treat it lightly though," The Dreaming Moon admonished. "Though the dream might be fleeting, the truth it reveals in yourself will last long past the morning."

"...I know that," Ling Qi said lowering her eyes. She still remembered the Bloody Moon's Dream.

"Then let's get started shall we?" the Grinning Moon said, turning away, she raised her hands and brushed the mist away, revealing a sheer cliff, beneath which stretched what seemed the whole of the province. Ling Qi could see the cities and villages of Emerald Seas huddled circles of light and smoke, crouching amidst a vast sea of green. It struck her then, just how scattered and fragile that those lights seemed.

"We have picked out a few venues, that will be your first decision," the Dreaming Mood added.

"Do not worry about excluding any of us," Xin chuckled, a knowing look in her eyes. "One way or the other, all three of us have our parts within you."

Ling Qi looked out over the cliffs and saw…

[] The crumbling city of Tonghou, turned inward, shrinking by the decade, lit by the light of a grinning crescent.
[] A gleaming tower of light and wood, vast beyond easy comprehension, a bastion of power that cast deep shadows indeed, even under the lightless moon.
[] A little village in the hills, new and yet old, built upon layers of bones, but peaceful and full of laughter under the light of a waning moon.

Yaaaaay. Almost certain this isn't gonna last past this arc, but still.

Man, for a moment I thought that meant EPC Successor art. Thinking about it, pretty sure Moonboi listed EPC as his cultivation art, so I don't really know. Is the capstone project of EPC to go through this mini-trial and sorta forge your own successor art? We are a bit early to be forging custom arts, but maybe this way means we have a few moon aspects to help us out and do the heavy lifting. We could seriously use a successor cultivation art either way.

I suspect our patrons are doing the heavy lifting, and what we're doing here is establishing what our successor parameters will be.

... S rank FSS?

The tower seems to be the most interesting and since the choice isn't picking a phase over another there's no reason to be too picky.
