Word from discord:

Shoe shopping is still fair game (at other points in Dai's life) because this is just the latest time.
Clearly, the person he didn't expect to meet was Shinsato Ren going shopping with Kairi because
a) As someone who perches on desks right in front of people, her shoes end at eye level
b) She wanted an opinion on how intimidating she looks in them and
c) It makes Dai and Ren spend time together and that is her OTP

Promises were very important things. One did not let go of their integrity because it was inconvenient, or because it was impractical. At least, that's what Daisuke's thoughts were on the matter. Given what he was going to be--what he was, it was inevitable wherein he would have to choose between what was right and what was practical. Perhaps it could come tomorrow. Perhaps it could come in a year.

Whenever the time would come where he would have to break a promise, however, was not today.

Today, or the early morning at least, was fully reserved for his little slice of fluffy heaven. It had taken a bit of time for correspondence to reach one another but the Genin to be finally managed to schedule some free time with Inuzuka Nadare. The latter, of course, being the same old care taker that had promised Daisuke some free time with the pups in exchange for learning how to properly take care of them.

Despite being leagues stronger than their civilian counterparts, the shinobi canines required even more maintenance to keep them in tip top shape. Which meant longer walks, specialized diets, and a whole lot of attention. Mostly because ninja dogs were a lot easier to lose in a crowd than regular dogs. The greyhaired rookie laughed. The sound not unlike the soft chimes in the summer. Far be it the funniest line but he understood enough that some politeness would garner him good will down the line.

There were a lot of lessons just for the basic knowledge. The way it branched out for the specific breeds certainly made his head spin. And the fact that the wizened caretaker still somehow remembered everything as if she was reciting from a script only impressed the young man even more. Not to mention what it did to his pride. Couldn't really ever forget that.

Thus Daisuke spent the morning learning the ins and outs of general care for the pups. The very same ones that kept running and rolling circles around his legs. A good number kept trying to vie for his attention but alas, Daisuke only had two hands. And could only pet two at a time when the lessons had been established and taught. Then again, some of the overly excitable ones decided that the visitor's shoulders were free game and tried their best to perch on them.

One even managed to get inside his hoodie!

All in all, as Daisuke bade goodbye to the kennel and dear old Nadare, more promises were made about coming back for more lessons. And that he really had to hide his crush for the heiress better. That comment had him blushing like a tomato, well into the fruit vendors along the streets of Konoha.

Somehow, you doubt it'll be any of those things. There's something in your memory about new genin's first missions, something that's important… but whatever it is, it's lost to you. It's not like any of the shinobi you've asked have been helpful. Even Gai had only patted you on the shoulder hard enough to make your feet shake and told you that it 'was an experience not to be missed'.
Why wouldn't we know what D-rank missions are like even without Gai telling us and our fuzzy memory of our past life, we can see this stuff in the achievements.
Entry Level
Every shinobi has to start somewhere. You didn't think that somewhere would involve picking up all the piles in the dog park, but maybe you should have.
Unlock Condition: Complete 50 'D-Rank- Missions
Reward: ???
Status: LOCKED

Here Kitty Kitty
Capturing Tora the Cat is not a mission, it isn't a chore, and it certainly isn't a task. It is a way of life.
Unlock Condition: Complete the 'Capture Tora' mission 10 times.
Reward: ???
Status: LOCKED

uh, good point.

By the way am i the only one a bit disappointed we didn't get to the genin team yet?

The update is not bad, but this vote feels..unnecessary. Though i suppose it might influence what our first d-c ranks will be.

[X] Befriend and rescue a noble, bringing them back to Konoha for their own safety!

Yeah, they probably decide our first mission. Like that one might be babysitting or finding a lost child or something like that

I mean if it influences our missions I don't want to capture Tora, however prophetic it would seem.

Uumm speaking of sword reflections, there was a technique in Rurouni Kenshin where a dude fired off an ocular hypnosis thing off his swords reflection onto himself to give himself a strength buff via removing his mental limiters or something like that... are beneficial/boosting genjutsu a thing actually?

I am fairly sure there are in a Filler, a guy that could boost speed and maybe strenght using his Ocarina, so unless Vesvius nays it, it should be possible to do boosting genjutsus.

Something like Tone of Courage as a sister technique to TOD could be fun.

Shouldn't we be going wilder, since we have full freedom with Write-ins and no restrictions? I mean, we could even say "steal 1008 pieces of bbq from Choji", or other outrageous stuff.

This vote doesn't have to be a prophetic thing - it could just be a vote on how we want to build our image with our fellow shinobi - as someone who is realistic at all moments, or as someone who doesn't mind letting their hair down and relaxing when mission's over.

It'd be nice to see Daisuke loosen up a little and make a humorous response.

Hmm, we're going to need a genjutsu if we hope to reach out talent level of genjutsu (currently jounin level IIRC) without it take 3 forevers.

not jounin level, ELITE jonin level!
well, with elite genjutsu song of discord should rank up pretty fast at least. Just need a bit of training time.

Once we master the B-rank version (assuming it does not unlock an A-rank) we can maybe try to develop a B-A rank vision or touch-based genjutsu. (by cutting the body we also cut the mind? Something like that would be interesting)

Or, if our jonin knows them, we can get a few standard ones. Always good to have more options so we can keep our strongest techniques for when we REALLY need them.

I wonder how hard to dispel our genjutsu are right now. Itachi was probably Master or Legendary, and Naruto was not able to dispel one of his not-sharingan illusions. Maybe an average chunin can't dispel them already.

The difficulty of dispelling a genjutsu is twofold:
-The ability to identify the genjutsu quickly. Preferably before it takes effect.
-The ability to actually perform Kai to dispel. Debilitating conditions inflicted can include the inability to perform a dispel even if you know you are in one, i.e. being asleep, terrified or not in control of your entire mind

Yeah, I honestly think we might be a peer or above to Kurenai in pure genjutsu skill, though she probably has more techniques. It was stated that she's a new jonin, so it's unlikely she has anything beyond Elite. She may not have anything Elite depending on what Elite is*?

It's not like Kurenai is very strong or anything, but it's still exciting to reach Elite in a skill. Our taijutsu is still laggardly, but at least we have a new source of power?

*I'm not sure what "Elite jonin" would be. Is it beginning Kakashi (experienced operator with a bunch of missions, but not Kage level) or something like Shippuden Neji (newly promoted jonin)? Kakashi and Zabuza are pretty much above the likes of Kurenai, but I wouldn't call them Kage level which is the next skill rank after Elite.

You all decided that you wanted to socialize at Ino's party - on the assumption that people other than our friends would be there, which seems to have been a mistake - and so your punishment is pointless votes.

I don't think we're at Kurenai's level. She's at least Master, I would think. She's considered Leaf's number one genjutsu user, and even Itachi praises her skill in genjutsu, and surely there are other jounin at Elite level in genjutsu in Leaf.

It should be remember that the skill level descriptions don't exist in a vacuum. Expert is described as the level a special jounin would have their specialty in, but you're not a special jounin just from having a skill there - in spite of having both genjutsu and kenjutsu at that level when we fought Sasuke our QM told us in Discord that we were only about mid chunin. Our jutsu aresenal is not really that big, and a number of our other skills aren't that high yet. Further, the text for Elite says that an elite jounin would average at that level of skill. This implies to me that an elite jounin would probably have at least a couple skills at Elite level, and likely at least one more above it.

To reach special jounin, regular jounin, and elite jounin we're going to need to up our skills in other areas and notably increase the arsenal of jutsu we have at our disposal, especially in terms of quality for those jutsu since our best are C-Ranks right now. We'll want some A-Rank jutsu if we're going to get to elite jounin status, and maybe an S-Rank.

Why don't we use Genjutsu to give people sleep paralysis?

Because the genjutsu we have doesn't have that among the effects we know how to induce. Tone of Discord was created through experimentation, and the effects we got were the results of that. We might be able to induce paralysis in the future if we discover a combination of notes that would do that, but we can't at the moment.

Yeah, but Master is stated to be the level at which the Kages are at, and I really don't think Kurenai is Kage level anything.

Plus, she's a new jonin, and if she has Master Genjutsu Kakashi should be Master level in Ninjutsu at least, which he is not until Shippuden imo.

I know that skills don't reflect actual Rank, but I don't think Kurenai has any feats reflecting a level of skill that can match the Kage. It could be that the Leaf doesn't really specialise in genjutsu, which is why she's the best user around?

E: I know that a skill at that level doesn't mean overall strength at that level, but we still shouldn't hand around Master Ratings to just anyone. I don't think Mei or Ohnoki would exceed Master in ninjutsu, and those are probably the benchmark we should use.

So errr, elite jounin level in Genjutsu just out of the academy... Okay then. Think we need to up our control and reserves next to make best use of the skill branch. We're also going to want a vision based technique and possibly one that bypasses both of those. It must be possible to do a genjutsu attack with out having a sense based trigger.

In terms of proficiency we're probably the same as Kurenai, what she almost certainly has over Daisuke is a lot of genjutsu techniques., because there's no way Kurenai was master level at Genjutsu. That said a fight between them would lead to Daisuke getting plastered all over the floor because the rest of his skills are no where near her level.

Presumably because all our ancillary skills are badly underleveled in comparison.

Acrobatics: Adept (450/800) (Reward XP Invested: 60)
Sleight of Hand: Practiced (200/400) (Reward XP Invested: 20)
Perception: Adept (430/800) (Reward XP Invested: 130)
Intimidate: Adept (450/800) (Reward XP Invested: 161)
Sense Motive: Adept (600/800) (Reward XP Invested: 250)

in terms of direct Shinobi arts as well
-Chakra Adhesion: Adept (500/800)

All of these skills are combat relevant and not particularly high level and holding us back a lot from being considered a higher tier threat.

  • Practiced (200 XP): You're accustomed to this skill. You can use it without fail. This is the level that Academy Students must reach in order to graduate.
  • Adept (400 XP): You know the ins and outs of this skill, and even know some tricks with it that others don't. A career genin tops out at this level.
