[X] Train with Big Sis Kyoko.

"Want to go train?" you say.

"Sounds good to me," says Kyoko. "But that raises a different question, that being where we should go to train."

Hmm. You hadn't considered that.

"Maybe we can find some abandoned place," says Kyoko, beginning to walk down the street. "But where would one be?"

"Why don't we just ask Homura?" you say. "She lives here, and she's been a magical girl for a while, so she should know some good training spots."

"Yeah, that sounds good," says Kyoko. "You wanna do the honors?"

You shrug, and call out telepathically.

"Hey, Homura, I've got a question," you say. "Do you know if there are any good places to train? Abandoned, hidden, that kind of thing?"

"Yes, actually, I do know of some. There's an abandoned junkyard over on the south side of the city, near where you are. Just head south and it should be past the warehouse."

"Thanks!" you say. "See you later!"

"Try not to get yourself killed,
" she says.

You start walking in the direction you think is south, but stop when Big Sis Kyoko calls out your name.

"Yuma, where are you going?" she says.

"To the junkyard!" you say.

"What junkyard?" says Kyoko.

"The junkyard Homura told us about!"

"Wait a second… You mean the junkyard she must have told you about over telepathy?"

"Yes!"

"The telepathy that I couldn't hear?"

"Y-Yes?"

Kyoko sighs, shaking her head as she pats your shoulder.

"Do you see the problem with that?"

"Yes…" You hang your head, defeated, and Kyoko lets out a laugh.

"Now, where did you say the place was?"

"South side of the city, just past the warehouse…"

Big Sis Kyoko grabs your hand, dragging you along with her. She's not walking too fast, but she does keep a brisk pace; you may have all day, but acting like you did tends to leave you wandering around in the middle of the night, wondering where the time went.

As you walk, you mentally prepare yourself for the training. You'll be using your magic, most likely, and you can never be too safe.

You wished to help Big Sis Kyoko, and your magic reflects that. Your main ability is your healing magic, but it's not your only ability. Your magic abilities are built to complement Big Sis, to shore up her weaknesses and rely on her strengths. Your weapon is weird, an odd cross between a staff and a mace. It's pure white, with a large orb on the top. The orb's got eyes, oddly enough, and something you think might be a tail coming out the top, but you are no master of orb biology. You can use it to cast your healing, but you can also use it for some strong attacks, infusing it with magic and then smashing whatever's in your way. You can also smash it on the ground and use your magic to stun anything near you, giving Kyoko ample time to tear her way through the immobile opposition.

You're not as skilled with your weapon as Kyoko is, not even close, but any witch too tough to be impaled by Kyoko's spear can usually be beaten down by your mace. To top it all off, your magic is incredibly cheap. If you ended up putting Big Sis in danger because you went through magic faster than she did, that wouldn't be very helpful, and you specifically wished to help her out.

You're rather well-rounded in terms of magic, with healing, crowd control, and even some offensive power, but without Kyoko you would have a hard time finishing off witches; spears are much better than maces when it comes to giving killing blows.

"Earth to Yuma," says Kyoko. "You there?"

You snap to attention, nearly tripping over yourself.

"I'm here, I'm here!" you say. "What's happening?"

"We're here, ya big doof. Good thing I was holding your hand, or you might have wandered off into nowhere. Now, are ya ready to train?"

You nod your head enthusiastically, and the two of you manifest your soul gems at the same time. You race to transform before she does, but when the light fades she's smirking and holding a spear.

"I win again," says Kyoko. "You've got it down to under two seconds though, so you're getting better."

The two of you do this, seeing who can transform the fastest, because Kyoko says it could be important if you fight a magical girl. Whoever transforms first attacks first, so you can't waste any time looking silly.

"So, what are the rules?" you say. "Are we doing the usual?"

"Sure, why not," says Kyoko. "No magic on my part, and you can enhance your weapon. We start five feet apart, and we go on one."

The two of you walk away until you're at the proper distance and drop into battle stances.

The first time you had brought up training, Big Sis had laughed it off as impractical. She said it would waste too much magic that could be used hunting witches, and that you would get better with time anyway. But once she figured out just how cheap your magic was, she had decided that you needed to learn how to fight. "No sciency bullshit," she had said. "You've got to learn to use the tricks you have now before you come up with new ones, and you need to learn how to actually fight before anything else."

Seeing how she routinely beat you with nothing but a spear or two, you were inclined to agree with her.

"Three, two, one!"

Kyoko blasts forward, spear held to her side as you keep your weapon in front of you. The two of you play an incredibly dangerous game of chicken, waiting to see who flinches first.

You've learned by now that attacking Kyoko when she's expecting it is a waste of time at best, as she's quick enough to dodge your slow swings and eager to capitalize on your defenseless back. Likewise, Kyoko's learned not to attack too wildly, lest you take the opening and land a solid hit. So now the two of you wait, goading the other into attacking.

You don't have much time to goad, seeing as how she's practically flying at you, but magical reflexes make things far more dramatic.

In the end, it's you who blinks first, stepping to the side and bringing your mace back to swing at her midsection. Kyoko slams the wooden part of her spear onto the head of your mace, using the momentum to flip over and poking you in the back of the knee with her spear but as she lands. You fall down onto that knee, partly out of respect for Kyoko using the blunt end and partially because it hurts anyway, and Kyoko spins around to face you.

She rushes, spear pointed at your throat, and you keep your mace rested on the ground. Only two more seconds until you can get up, the amount of time it would take for you to heal the injury if this were an actual fight, but Kyoko's intent on ending the spar before then.

She sticks her spear but-first into the ground, using it to propel herself over you, but you've expected this. You roll forwards as she leaps, keeping your mace on your back to block her swipe and turning around to see that she's too far away to hit you, at least for now.

One second until you can stand.

Kyoko rushes forward, keeping her spear level for a stab, and you smash the bottom of your mace into the ground. The magic you've imbued it with creates a shockwave, just strong enough to make Kyoko stumble, but that's all you need.

You whip your mace forward, pushing magic into the tail at the head of your mace and watching as it smacks Kyoko in the legs, sending her even further off balance.

You use your mace to hoist yourself up, using the momentum to swing it as hard as you can at Kyoko. There's no magic, but a solid hit from this should be enough to put her down for a bit. Kyoko reels back, dodging your swing but ending up falling on her back. You grin, and bring your mace above your head for a devastating downward blow.

Despite your strength, you know Kyoko can take it. You're not sure if it's because of your wish, or just because you don't want to, but you've found that nothing you do can seriously hurt Kyoko.

You bring your mace down, and the clang of metal on metal at the same time you feel cold steel press against your shoulder.

Kyoko's manifested a second spear and pointed it above her, so that you almost impaled yourself on it. Her first spear is grasped in one hand, and currently holding your mace above her head. Both spears are pressed into the ground, giving them good support in a usually awkward position.

"Game over, twerp. Looks like I win, again."

You sigh, and straighten yourself up. You offer her your hand and she accepts your help up, still grinning.

"That makes it what, ten-nil for me?" she says.

"Yeah yeah, laugh it up," you say. "I'm a healer, not a fighter!"

"For a not-fighter, you smash things pretty damn hard," says Kyoko "And what was that trick with the tail thingy?"

"Just something I came up with," you say. "Oh, we forgot to check! You still have our grief seeds?"

She nods, pulling two clean grief seeds out of her pocket. One was a spare that you had been able to save, and the other was from the last witch in Kazamino.

"I got em right here," says Kyoko. "How's your gem doing?"

You manifest your soul gem, checking how much corruption it has. You're still pretty clean, maybe a quarter of the way through your magic reserves. The magic used from sparing was maybe almost nothing, so little that you would have to get into large fractions to make a full estimate. You've got nearly an eighth corruption from general wear and tear before you arrived in Mitakihara, with the other eighth coming from the sadness you were feeling last night and during lunch. The "magic reserves" thing is actually quite tricky when you think about it; it would seem that you should only cleanse when near full corruption, but Kyoko's explained that your mind goes to bad places if you get over half, and you might not remember to cleanse.

Kyoko herself is doing a bit better than you, maybe a sixth of the way through her reserves. You curse grief seeds and their complete nonsense, not for the first time. Why would they only work three times before expiring, why?

Two more rounds produce the same result, if somewhat more lopsided now that Kyoko's caught on to your trick with the tail. Restraining your magic usage is weird, but very useful for cutting down on magic-reliance.

"So, what do we do now?" Kyoko says after kicking your butt for the third time in a row. "It's getting kind of dark out, actually. Guess getting here took longer than I thought…"

"Why don't we head back where we came from and figure out what to do while on the way?" you say.

Kyoko shrugs, and leads the way back home.

The two of you spend the walk chatting away, teasing each other about anything and everything. Byt the time you're back in an area you recognize, it's almost five-thirty in the evening.

"I say we have something western for dinner," says Kyoko. "Maybe pizza. Pizza?"

"Ehh, we had pizza a few days ago," you say.

"And we've had fried egg and cheese sandwiches for breakfast how many times in a row?" says Kyoko.

"Twelve," you say.

"Then I think we can handle a bit of pizza."

You shrug. Pizza is pretty good, and you're not too peeved with having it again. It's at that moment that a brilliant idea strikes you, and you hop up and down in excitement.

"We should invite Homura to have supper with us!" you say. "Sayaka and Madoka might be all sad and think-y, but Homura isn't sad at all!"

"Are you sure?" says Kyoko. "We just had lunch with her, and Homura doesn't strike me as much of a social butterfly."

"So she's a caterpillar right now, but we have to be the shell thingy that turns her into a butterfly! We have to metamorphis her until she can be a regular human, with passable social skills!"

"You're thinking a bit far ahead," says Kyoko. "Maybe we should just..." she trails off, staring into the distance.

"Big Sis?" you say. "What is it?"

"Oh, nothing," says Kyoko. "Just sensed a witch, that's all."

A witch?

"How close is it?" you say.

"Not too far," says Kyoko. "Maybe a few blocks north?"

"Should we hunt it?" you say, trying to find the witches presence.

"I dunno. If we want to do a big group-hunt with Sayaka and Homura then we should probably wait until tomorrow, give them some time to rest. What do you say?"

What do you say?

You must admit, the thought of supper is appetizing, especially if you can get Homura to eat with you. And yet, can you really just leave the witch be? It could hurt people while you wait, and you can always find another witch to hunt with Sayaka and Homura.

But then there's your grief seed situation. You don't have any urgent need for them this moment, and you're in fact a bit high on corruption right now, but is that enough to make ignoring it a better option?

And if you do hunt the witch, what do you do with Madoka? Do you invite her with you?

What do you do?

Sayaka is probably still reeling from what we told her, and even if we mean well - and even if we, the players, might want to push for a relationship - we should probably give her time to collect her thoughts. But we can still probably invite Homura.

If we invite Homura and cleanse afterwards, this gives us a net +0 cleanses (assuming Homura takes one too). On the other hand, it's safer to bring someone, cleans out our grief, saves 2 cleanses of our current grief seeds, makes sure we can at least work with Homura before we do the big team hunt, and prevents the witch from eating anyone else. It also means that we can insist that Sayaka keep at least part of the seed we get from hunting, since in cannon that's part of why she witched out - even when she got a grief seed, she didn't use it.

On the other hand, Sayaka might feel left out when she learns we hunted with Homura, and it's probably mildly dangerous to hunt while we have this much grief (mitigated by having Homura along).

Hmmm. I foresee slight problems with us having 4 megucas, but only getting 3 cleanses per hunt.

Poor hitmoi, who doesn't even get to be part of any of this. I guess having two green haired characters would be two too dangerous.

Tch, I think Big Sis should just learn to trust Yuma better.

you are no master of orb biology.
Sounds like something that oughts to be corrected- wait-

You're not as skilled with your weapon as Kyoko is, not even close,
-Kyouko is more skilled with your weapon than we are?! :o This ought to be corrected!

... Did Yuma... just... [Q] genuflect?

Yuma, you're barely able to help Kyouko with Social, thanks to your Wish, most likely. You are nowhere near ready to take on the HomuHomu challenge.

Voting wise, we just had fighting sort of happen...

I think this could be a thing, depending.

Girls do their best now and are plotting. Please wait warmly while it happens.

I mean, if we invite Sayaka and say there's a Witch, she's gonna want to fight it now, the dumb dumb. But if we talk it over with Madoka's personal stalker shield, we could totally make it seem like a casual thing.

Maybe I'm reaching, and half awake, but this sounds like a plan to me right now.

All these calcultions change depending on how much magic is actually needed to beat a witch, or to live in general. Assuming we always try to cleanse at 50%:

- beating a witch is presumably upwards of 1/8th reserves, judging by our sparring. Best case it's about that much each for a team of four
- we're currently losing magic at a pretty high rate of 1/8th per day because of general sadness, but we should hopefully recover. Let's assume it generally decays at half that rate

With these assumptions, a team of four MGs will require net two cleanses per successful witch hunt, and the other two cleanses will last them four days. In the witch-filled Mitakihara this should be fine, but probably won't be sustainable long-term in other circumstances.

4 meguca only require 1 net cleanse per hunt, but you're right that this leaves 2 cleanses that will last 2 days total.
Of course, this all assumes that we're right about the 1/8 cost on average for each day, and for each witch fight.

I think it's worth noting that witch-hunting is necessary, but rarely strictly economical, particularly in Madoka quests. In most cases witch hunting is saying "I accept a slight net loss of grief for now, in exchange for having a grief seed that I can use in darker situations and also any social benefits witch-hunting brings me."

Like, hunting witches does have an inherent net value due to the grief seed you get, but that net value spikes when you're group hunting, particularly when you're just getting to know new magical girls. While there is a ridiculous amount of danger in jumping in to hunt witches in a hastily formed group, in terms of getting bang for your buck group-hunting is simply better.

Sooo I feel like we should probably take as best advantage of the situation as we can- we know there's a witch and that they can give us/Kyouko a grief seed. We also know Homura is probably up for activities even in Sayaka is doing her own thing. So let's invite Homura to hunt with us; we'll get a better sense of her abilities and how we can co-ordinate and overall engage in a MG social bonding activity which is kind of important for a stick in the mud like Homura. And since we invited her she'll probably be okay with us having the grief seed. So a slight net gain over all. Also the witch can't torment humanity any longer etc etc yadda yadda

[x] Hunt the witch
-[x] invite Homura
--[x] Invite her over for dinner after the witch is defeated

(This also gives Homura an excuse to tell us about Walpy because, like, she should probably tell someone sooner rather than later.)

Of course, this all assumes that we're right about the 1/8 cost on average for each day, and for each witch fight.
I'm assuming magic usually decays slower than we lost it because we were specifically quite sad. It could be 2 days, or 4, or significantly longer. Could be less if there's constant emotional turmoil.

Another matter to consider, though not something we know IC, is that Homura relies on mundane weapons and timestop. We don't know what the cost of her timestop is (it's not stated in canon, and various fanon sources have put it anywhere between "ruinous" and "literally zero"). The upshot is, she may be willing to share her firearms with us (and teach us how to use them), which would allow us to limit the amount of magic we spend and give us a ranged option that Yuma, Kyoko lack (and I'm guessing Sayaka's isn't very magic-efficient). Additionally, if timestop costs a significant amount of magic to maintain, we could potentially decrease the expense by having several megucas fire the weapons in timestop, instead of just Homura.

This is all, of course, completely OOC, but we should gain the knowledge IC at some point.

By the way, don't know if you included all the info in grief seed usage and magic powers because of my questions or you were always going to do that, but thanks for all the info! I would still like to know things like "how much magic decays on average per day", "how common are witches in Mitakihara", "how much it usually takes to fight a witch", and also what is our usual source of income (do we pick pockets? Bust ATMs?). But I'm sure we'll find out in due time.

Omake: More For The Rest Of Us
[Q] Hunt the Witch.
-[Q] Invite Homura.
--[Q] But not really.

"I can't help but notice something strange."

"Whatever do you mean?"

"... There's no Witch here."

"Well, of course there isn't," Kyouko looks at Homura as if she was crazy. "Do you see any witches around, Yuma?" she asked while scarfing down a slice of pizza from the quickly dwindling stack of boxes that rested on the table a minute before.

"Nuh-huh," the little girl managed to grunt in between bites, doing her best to contribute to the cause against the continued existence of wheat based foods.

The time traveller blinked languidly, staring at the ravenous duo with... fascination, despite herself. It wasn't often the two teamed up, which usually ended in tears because of that godforsaken Mikuni scion, so it wasn't often she got the chance to... admire the... spectacle... of the war... against food...

Well, there was that once Witch that one time, but she'd rather not think about that.

Homura shuddered, absently patting at her pockets to make sure nothing was falling from them.

Despite 100% of her attention being concentrated on the quickly vanishing slices (plural) of pizza in her hands, Kyouko somehow managed and gave that extra 20% and noticed the taciturn's girl discomfort.

"You don't like the food?" she raised a sharp eyebrow.

Utter silence ensued, the continuos sounds of food being eaten ceasing at once.

Homura, being an extremely wise being, thanks to years and years of trial and error and suffering, did the wise thing:

"It's delicious," she bit into a slice of pizza, humming and making a show of how good it was, as if her tastebuds were exploding in pleasure.

Or she tried, not being very used to the whole 'expressing feelings' thing, but going by how Kyouko's and Yuma's eyes seemed to suddenly lose a sinister gleam and focus back on their dinner, it must have been a good enough act.

Even if the pizza tasted a bit like cardboard.

Rather than even hinting at that, Homura chose to remind her hosts of a simple fact. "You called me here to fight a Witch."

"Oh yeah," the redhead waved away the dark haired girl's concerns, "we're all fresh out of Witches."

"Very unfortunate," contributed Yuma. "What we do have-" she added as Homura made to stand up, "is a Madoka."

The time traveller froze.

"... Not in the menu, I mean, she just got here."

Slowly, with a sound like rusted gears grinding, Homura turned around.

"Uh, hi?" squeaked Madoka. Standing there. Wearing a cute jacket and skirt combo. Fidgeting.

Homura twisted back around, hair flying majestically to snap at Kyouko's eyes, the red head jumping back to dodge, one hand snatching the remaining pizza boxes and holding them behind her back with magical dexterity.

Shielding the pizza from Homura's furious gaze.

"Let's. Make this. Clear," bit out the deranged eyed time traveller. "We're not. Hunting. Witches."

Kyouko's eyes flickered to Madoka, "Of..." to Homura, "of course not," to the empty spot Yuma was occupying, "we're just- where's Yuma?" she blinked.

A slight rustling sound had Kyouko jump in place as Yuma's head poked our of her voluminous mane of hair and around her shoulder.

"We're not hunting any witches!" cried the green haired girl, which had the immediate effect of making Homura's eyes stop glowing, maybe literally. The little girl climbed down from the bemused Kyouko's back and approached the time traveller, gaze wandering with curiosity at the tips of her dark hair...

She'd swear the thing pointed at her menacingly before settling down.

"We're not hunting Witches," repeated Yuma, "that was actually a lie, but it was a white lie!" she said, raising a finger and looking up at Homura with big, wide, innocent blue eyes.

Then she turned to the frightened, wide eyed, completely still Madoka.

"Come, sit down!" invited Yuma, physically dragging the girl along, causing her to start breathing again.

Kyouko grudgingly replaced the remaining pizza boxes on the table, and everyone sat down. Homura quickly grabbed a couple of slices and pushed them towards Madoka, while taking another one for herself. Kyouko rolled her eyes.

"I assume, then, you want to talk?" Homura raised an eyebrow.

The redhead shrugged. "Ask the chipmunk, 's none of my business."

Two sets of eyes fell on the little green girl who, after frowning at her Big Sis, who mouthed back at her 'chipmunk', coughed into her hand and turned to address her guests.

"Now that we're all well eaten," she said after inhaling the last and twentieth or so slice of pizza she had, "we need to talk about your relationship."

Homura startled the tiniest bit as Yuma stared at her, at a confused Madoka... and at Homura's hair?

"See," the little girl crossed her arms, head bowed with eyes closed, "Yuma is actually rather observant for Yuma's age, and Yuma has noticed something that might be considered a... problem," she ignored Madoka's squeak, "Yuma does not think all of us are being honest with our feelings, and feel that, perhaps, as fabulous as Homura's hair might be," she couldn't help to glance up, "a three way relat- where's Homura?"

Kyouko snickered as Yuma blinked at the empty seat.

"She, uh..." Madoka held a slice of pizza defensively between herself and the green girl. Not the best defense against continued attacks, but it helped draw her hosts' attention away from her. "She dissapeared almost as soon as you weren't looking, when you said something about... problems?"

Yuma's eye twitched.

"Never take your eyes off the enemy," Kyouko ruffled the girl's hair.

Yuma groaned, letting her forehead fall on the table.

"We didn't even get to the ice cream bonding part," she complained, voice muffled by the table.

"Which means more ice cream for us," grinned Kyouko.

"Big Sis, you're not helping..."

"Pizza?"

Yuma looked up at Madoka's voice. The pinkette held out her second and last slice, actually the only remaining one, the rest long gone, empty pizza boxes having realized their greatest mission in life, and now just being there, mockingly empty, as if trying to insult and goad Yuma with their non-being full of pizza.

She sighed. "You only had one slice, so you should have this one, too. It wouldn't do for you to go hungry," she chided, chewing and swallowing and inspecting her hand for any remaining crumbs.

Then she blinked.

Kyouko stared.

Madoka sat leaning away, holding her hands protectively to her chest.

"Uh, you already ate it," she informed.

Yuma stared at her own hands, as if watching them for the first time.

"So Yuma did," she agreed.

"W-well," Madoka chimed, "I'll be going, if you don't mind, I- I'd like to keep my fingers where they are, so..." the girl smiled nervously while shuffling away, "see you tomorrow?"

"See ya," Kyouko waved, rolling her eyes once more.

"Yuma wasn't gonna eat Madoka's fingers," complained Yuma, "Yuma was already full, and fell prey to the lure of pizza."

"But you know what it means?"

"Big Sis."

"More ice cream..."

"Not helping."

"... For us!"

"... OK, Yuma thinks that will help."

And much ice cream was had!

The magic used from sparing was maybe an eighth in total, with the other eighth coming from the sadness you were feeling last night and during lunch.

"So, what do we do now?" says Kyoko.

Okay, so a number of problems with this one:
1) There is no conceivable way whatsoever in which a very brief spar where barely any magic is used corrupts Yuma's soul gem by an eighth, especially when her powers are supposed to be really cheap. Honestly, the drain on her soul gem from that spar should be barely noticeable, if at all. As in, less than 1%.
2) Grief Seeds aren't used up in some kind of arbitrary manner. They can be used as many times as it takes to saturate the Grief Seed. So if a Soul Gem is at 2% corruption, the Grief Seed is only going to take that 2% corruption. If said Seed had 30% capacity remaining, it would then go down to 28%. Having Seeds be limited to a number of uses, rather than an amount of Grief, makes no sense whatsoever. It's like a Soul Gem being corrupted the exact same amount by one of Mami's muskets when compared to a Tiro Finale.
3) Kyouko and Yuma's brief spar should have lasted about a minute. If you wanted the evening to pass, they should have been sparring for hours. You don't have to cover the whole time, just put in a brief timeskip. And no, it still wouldn't corrupt either of their gems by 1/8th, or anywhere near that, since they would be barely using any magic.

Isn't a lot of that QM dependant? We can figure out how we think grief seeds work based on bits of evidence from cannon, but I don't think we really know for sure, and we certainly don't know anywhere near exact numbers. I think you're right that 1/8th corruption seems a little much for about a minute of sparring that was specifically noted to be cheap grief-wise, but I figure that just means that we were sparring offscreen for a lot longer than was actually written.

The sparring expenditure does seem really excessive, now that I think of it. Compare it to, say, the amount of magic Mami was clearly throwing around, and the discrepancy seems rather obvious.

As for grief seeds, their function varies from fan source to fan source. It is not uncommon for them to refill arbitrary amounts. The only really clear info from canon is that they can be used more than once.

[] Let's go look at it!
--[] If we're going to go hunt it tomorrow, then we should know what we're going to hunt. Scouting!

There's definitely a smarter way to phrase this, but I can't think of it right now.

Not really? I mean, we can't force the QM to adhere to canon or whatever, but since canon never contradicted the most logical conclusion based on the evidence shown, then there's no reason to think that it's otherwise.

In other words, it's absolute nonsense to assume that Grief Seeds have an arbitrarily limited number of uses rather than a limited amount of Grief they can absorb before becoming a danger of rehatching. In fact, the very existence of the danger of a Seed rehatching because it absorbs too much Grief indicates that it is on an "amount of grief" basis, rather than a "number of uses" basis. In fact, as we see in canon, when Madoka surprises Homura by using Sayaka's Grief Seed to cleanse her (and doesn't use it on her own Soul Gem, despite her being on the verge of Witching out herself), Grief Seeds are not on a "per use" basis, but on a "total amount of Grief" basis, since that Seed was only used once before being considered unusable, despite both people involved desperately wanting to cleanse both of their gems. And we know that Madoka never used it before that point, because she was keeping it on her for sentimental reasons (and hadn't told anyone else about it, despite knowing that they were facing a desperate battle).

Furthermore, we see plenty of times in canon how Soul Gems have vastly greater magical capacity than a few hours of sparring with minimal magic usage registering a significant fraction of the total gem's capacity. Mami outright spammed dozens of muskets and Tiro Finales without any concern. Kyouko's gem wasn't even dark despite weathering an onslaught of Oktavia's attacks for a prolonged period of time (and protecting Madoka throughout it with barriers). Emotional distress, suffering, etc, cause a lot more corruption than magic usage unless you throw around a lot of magic.

Not to contradict you, but that train of logic might lead to a conclusion that different Grief Seeds could hold differ amount of Grief, depending on how powerful a Magical Girl the Witch hatched from had been.

That complicates things somewhat, so a given QM might or might not decide that they'd rather establish an arbitrary limit on the whole thing, because it wouldn't make sense narratively to dwell on the logistical issues in their quest. For example, Yuma Quest, where people go to casually insult Sabrina the Teenaged Abomination lol have fun. And also drama, because Puella Magi. But more for fun, I think.

YumaHugs, an introduction

To respond:
1) Fucking hell, Tired Chungus is banned from doing math, and Morning Chungus is banned from proofreading. It's now been changed to make more sense, with a tiny fraction from the spar and an extra almost-eighth from general wear and tear before the quest began. You've still got the same amount of grief, but it makes sense now.
2) They're grief seeds, they're about as arbitrary and symbolic as it gets. Logic and cause-and-effect get turned into recommendations the second witches come into play.
3) Keep in mind, it took you a while to walk to and from the junkyard; city outskirts and city center are pretty far apart from each other, and the restaurant was not on the way from your hotel. You left at 2:00, arrived at around 3;45, sparred for a few minutes, and got back at 5:00.

On that note, have some meta:
As per the poll (10-18), there won't be a MSKYO discord. People seem to be of the opinion that it would pull discussion away from the thread, and I can understand the concern. So please, keep everything MSKYO-related right here, though feel free to use the MSKYO channels in Godwinson's server and Homucifer's labyrinth for general hanging out.

On the second note, I'll now be introducing YumaHugs as a system. I want some way to encourage omakes, theorizing, and other general awesomeness (ala Higure's rewards in Resonance) without giving in-quest benefits and putting a hand on the dramatic stakes (also ala Resonance). So with that in mind, have YumaHugs.

Make an Omake? Get a YumaHug. Point out something I missed or did wrong? YumaHug. Figure out a witch's backstory pre-witching? Witch profile and YumaHug. Every witch used to be a magical girl, and figuring out what happened will get you rewarded. Post a theory and get it right, with good logic as to why you think that so I know it's not just wild guessing? YumaHug, once the theory's been confirmed in the quest. Essentially, do something that deserves a smug, get a YumaHug.

So what do YumaHugs do? Well, think of them as a sort of currency; whoever has the most at the quest's inevitable conclusion will get a reward, which is secret for now. If anyone somehow manages to finish with more YumaHugs then any character in MSKYO, they will get a separate prize. You can't use them for anything in the story, other than giving Yuma practice hugging people, therefore making her a better hugger. But seeing as how you can't improve perfection, that is somewhat irrelevant.

Currently, @Onmur has four YumaHugs for his omakes, and @SaltyWaffles has one for calling out a shitty mistake that fuck I should have noticed.

On that note, I leave you be. Good luck, and remember; We are born of the Hug, made men by the Hug, undone by the Hug; Fear the old Hug.
