A thought suddenly occurs to you, and you begin to giggle.

"Yuma?" says Madoka. "What is it?"

"Oh, it's just-" you continue giggling, almost unable to get a full sentence out. "I-I'm Homura!"

"What?" Homura says, tilting her head. "What on earth do you mean?"

"Be-because I'm in a hug pile!"
I don't get it

The idea is to get to know each other, so definitely don't disperse yet. It'd be rude to impose on Homura too much as well. Let's get hunting.

[X] Suggest that you all go hunt a witch.

-[x] She was just trying to help you, even if she was being dumb about it.
-[x] Letting familiars go is wrong, but so is breaking into hotels so we can sleep in a bed, or stealing so we can eat. You've never had to pick between doing what's right and dying, and I hope you don't ever have to, but we're not as lucky as you. We don't have families who care about us, or a big territory we got from someone else that has enough witches so that you don't have to pick between letting familiars go or not having enough grief seeds.
[X] Suggest that you all go for a trip to the arcade, or something similarly lighthearted.
[X] Say goodbye and go home with Kyoko.
--[X] Ask Sayaka to talk to Homura or Kyoko before going out to hunt a witch on her own. Maybe she could train with you and Big Sis after school tomorrow? It's not like you have plans that far in advance, after all.
--[X] What do you say to her?
---[X] Abashedly ask if you said too much to the others: she was uncharacteristically quiet, back there. You think it worked out okay, but if she's mad at you, she has to tell you, okay?

-[X] Point out that Mitakihara is way bigger and has more witches than Kazamino, so hopefully it won't be necessary here, if she's willing to let us stay and not make a fight out of it. Which you don't want, no matter how grumpy Big Sis can be sometimes.
-[X] Ultimately, the whole situation sucks, but we're stuck with it. Dying in protest won't help anyone.
    [X] Defend Kyoko. How?
-[X] Kyoko has to support you too, and if you both run around chasing familiars all the time you'd get killed when you run out of grief seeds. She's just being a responsible Big Sister! Running out of magic makes everyone sad.
    [X] Let Kyouko defend herself.
--[X] But if either of those two start getting too angry again, turn on the waterworks and sob pitifully about how you just want everyone to get along. THAT'LL learn 'em!

-[x] Bad Big Sis! She said last night that she wasn't trying to start a fight, and that means she was lying to you, and lying is bad.
-[x] There's nothing tough about it. You're just... trying to not die. She was trying to help, even if she was being dumb about it.

But if we go hunt a Witch, poor Doka would be left out...

Like a fifth wheel...

Waiting for one of the other for wheels to die horribly to a Witch, so she could betray the oldest, most worn out, lesbian wheel, and take her place, and start spinning with the rest, towards their deaths...

Or, since it's Madoka, perhaps she would wait until the other wheels became the very same monsters they rolled over so many times, so she could take them to Wheel Heaven, where all wheels can stop spinning, rest, and have the comfiest and most stilysh chairs to sit on.

Like some sort of... Law of the Wheel.

Yes.

I think we should reinforce the fact that Kyoko is a normal girl, just like everyone else. Make Sayaka empathize with us a little better.

I mean my next thought was to introduce Moar Lazah Tag into this setting, that way Madoka can contribute but we get all the bonding of Aggressive Combat Teamwork, but that's probably not where we want to go quite yet, I dunno. Also, teh cash monies that we don't have.

But yeah, let's not leave teh Madoka out and worrying, or increase Homura's stress to over 9000 by insisting that Madoka can toast come along on a Witch hunt with a team of not-yet-well-coordinated meguca.

@AsuraKyoko and @mCooperative have the right idea. We need to show Sayaka the human side of Big Sis that she would otherwise miss out on if their only interactions are as puella magi, so we need to put them in a situation that's conductive to that. As well, if we're aiming for everyone to get to know one another better, we need to be in a social situation that's inclusive to everyone. Battling a witch might do that for the puella magi, but Madoka isn't one of us, and going on a witch hunt with a muggle in tow is stupid and dangerous and we should know better even if we're only eight.

I think it'd be best to part ways for now. We've pushed Sayaka to challenge her preconceptions quite a bit already. She needs time to realign her thoughts. Spending more time together right now only risks more conflict that might undo the pretty impressive progress we already made.

[X] Say goodbye and go home with Kyoko.
--[X] Ask Sayaka to talk to Homura or Kyoko before going out to hunt a witch on her own. Maybe she could train with you and Big Sis after school tomorrow? It's not like you have plans that far in advance, after all.

---[X] Abashedly ask if you said too much to the others: she was uncharacteristically quiet, back there. You think it worked out okay, but if she's mad at you, she has to tell you, okay?

I stole your vote for my own, would you consider adding my write-in to your vote? It seems important to tell Sayaka if we are splitting here.

....[jk] warn sayaka of the high mortality rate among parents of magical girls

You have a very valid point, given that Homura, Mami, Kyouko, Yuma, and Oriko, are all lacking both of their parents, and Kirika appears to be lacking a father. Problem is, we never see Sayaka's parents, so for all we know she's already a member of the dead parents club.

Makes a good bit of sense, actually- Cubes could absolutely be selecting with a bias toward meguca whose being meguca would destabilize their life in order to induct them to the dead/deadbeat parents club, or those who are already members (because parents would be the adults most likely to notice their kid going weird and possibly make Cubes' job difficult). Even if it's not in any way a hard rule, given the many other factors (including just straight up potential) that could lead to Cubes offering a contract or not, seems like a way that it would just sorta turn out a lot of the time.

"No need to worry," says Homura. "When my parents died, they left me quite a large sum of money. Quite honestly, it's the nicest thing they ever did for me."
Well, that's one way to deal with 'where are Homura's parents'

Then who are the male female pair of the right ages at her funeral?

Hmm, I kinda like the vote, but I think some rephrasing is needed to avoid causing Sayaka to get defensive.

Yeah, Sayaka needs some time to process what just happened. Going to an arcade together might kind of work against the progress we've made, because she'll have something to take her mind off of it, instead of being unable to get the reality that her black-and-white morality is inherently flawed and wrong out of her head.

And what happened was great! Sayaka is forced to directly confront the contradiction between action (hunting familiars) and inaction (letting them go) both resulting in the deaths of innocents, necessitating a morality that acknowledges nuance and the notions of "more right" and "less wrong". And that magical girls can be victims too, rather than just effectively superheroes whose job it is to save the day, always.

The parents of Kyousuke or Hitomi, maybe? Or maybe they are Sayaka's parents, and we just never saw them until that moment. We don't know, and I don't think there's anything in the design notes for the funeral that would give a clear answer one way or another.
