Though your armor looked no different from the others, only a short time passed before the attackers identified you and started ganging up on you. In the beginning, this suited you fine; you are better than any of them in the air, and you know exactly how to make the armor tick, so every time they came at you, you dodged, upwards, downwards, sideways, only to turn and fill their backs with... well, laser markers, but the reactive system made it feel pretty real, even if you didn't actually shoot anything. In the end, you were no match for their numbers, but you took down an entire squad by yourself
A squad of PI's security in fully kitted out Legionaries. Revy took down a full squad, remember that is twenty people, in Legionaries by herself.
To put that in perspective remember:
Auks said:
The SSV Tokyo just deployed a team of three against a company of Eclipse Mercenaries. Just three. They completely destroyed the encampment and all of the Asari in it, and took only one minor injury in the process."
A company generally consists of between 80 and 250 soldiers. Given that we're talking about Asari here I'm guessing they took down around ninety.
30:1 odds with only a single minor injury is very impressive.
And remember Revy equaled about twenty Legionaries. Now to be fair this was back in the days when only 40% of our security guards were Marines. So it could have been one of the two teams or LEOs or the team of Mercs.
But still we're probably talking about Revy been able to take over 1:100 odds at least against the Eclipse. Probably more like 1:500. Now factor in that Baterian pirates/slavers are almost certainly not going to match up to the Eclipse...
Ah, I'm probably the only one thinking that it would be nice to have some power-armored adventures as opposed to this endless business crap... but it would be nice.
Vote for something that makes this happen and convince others. I suggest not being at Mindoir. Or doing something a little risky. I promise I won't murder you unless you do something exceedingly stupid.
I'm planning events that will give you opportunities to explore this option. One is supposed to be in the next update, the next in two quarter-ish.
Edit: Hint: the one this quarter one is kinda the reason I wanted some security rules.
Text is NOT a great format for space sim economics games. I have four or five of them in my steam library and the video and pictures help break up the wall of text nicely.
I've said it before, but some of the most fun I've had in this quest is when Revy was in the power armour trials. I realise that working out hard economics for a soft SF world is curiously compelling, but a) it's neverending b) I want Revy to be the science hero again, before she's completely buried in business.
The sad truth of this time period in ME canon is that its kinda dull. I can however happily inform you that the event I have plotted for two quarters from now should... undull things I hope. Its also purely your fault! (Well at least the reason its happening and reason for the difference between canon and the Quest is all your fault)
I think that some of it has to do with Revy having a "custom" version of the power armor, meaning more eezo, other rare materials and fine-tuning spent on it than it would be economical with mass-production. Or I at least think it was said somewhere before, maybe by Esbilon when he was running this quest.

Have you looked at Through the Ages? I'm not sure it would function so well at this format, but Alectai runs that quest tight by condensing "you aren't currently threatened by anything" parts to interludes where large-scale stuff can be done. Our usual turns are one year per turn, but the last interlude skipped probably about forty years or something.
So maybe you could do something like switching to one year (or half-year) turns when nothing too important is happening? And maybe condense some of the micromanagement, making it easier both for yourself and the voters? Not sure what the other participants would think about changes like that, but I would prefer a action getting more words and non-action getting packaged more tightly.
For most of the quest what I have been mostly looking forward to reading is basically using the arc-reactor tech as the start-up point to see how it can change the ME universe scientifically and politically. Researching and forming a company to continue funding and advancing those changes is fun and worth continuing. All thi business may be getting boring now, but perhaps people should at least research more into the MkII power armor with a focus on more integrated systems and personal weapon additions for a better equipped Revy for personal combat. Also, Revy could use a bit more Biotics training to get the most out of her combat potential if she wants to go on adventures.
So yes, I totally vote for more cool adventures, after some preparations first to make sure Revy's better readied for one.

...My fault personally, or the posters'? Either way, it's a fair cop - we tried to cover all the bases and fill out the setting in interesting ways, and I thank you, Auks and Esbilon for putting up with us stretching the universe out like Plastic Man fed entirely on Diet Coke and Mentoes.
..... Sorry hoyr, auto correct strikes again. I typed that up on my phone.
And there are plenty of action quests, but only one Shepard quest. We do get action, but we actually handle all sorts of other things, too! Granted, we talk the most about research and business, because that's one of the few things we can talk about near endlessly.

My post at 12:42PM has the names of all the Space Empire Sims I can recall from my Steam library right now. Of course, some of those encompass more than one game as they are series/collections.
I just had an idea from all this talks about going adventuring (or being attacked by raiders/something again). Currently, our Legionaries are insanely good at everything they, except for one thing where they merely excel: close combat. We already have flamethrowes and omni-blades, but they aren't anything revolutionary, even if they most of the time get the job done without much problems. However, with the incoming Reaper invasion come the melee-hugging husks (and other things), so I see plenty of reason to improve on that.
One way to do this could be Warp Barriers on power armors. They would make getting into a melee with one our suits quite hard without being shredded to dust. Another way that I see would be harnessing that same Warp Barrier tech by extending the field from the suit's arms, and then filling them with searing plasma. Warp Barrier optimized to breaking down anything it touches, followed by extreme heat seems to be a pretty good way of destroying things to me.
I think this video does a good job of depicting what I have in my mind:
This is going to be a political problem, not least because no matter how much money we have we won't be able to personally take care of the tens of billions of people we're going to put out of work with our technology. Yes, I said tens of billions. The Arc Reactor's not even going to be our biggest job-killer: Arc Reactors will eliminate He-3 mining jobs, but we can re-purpose those into asteroid miners skimming eezo and heavy/precious metals off of larger asteroids using spin mining, or outright digesting smaller asteroids into their component elements using disintegrator refining. The biggest job killer by far is going to be our improved VI/optical computing tech, which will by the time it's fully integrated into the business community will probably eliminate half or more of the entire service sector.

We're kind of in an odd inflection point for the next year or so. @Hoyr has made it clear with the space-AK assault that going off-planet without suitable protections (basically in the form of our own personal supership) will have Bad Consequences, but we can't feasibly build even a decent space yacht until 2174-Q2 when our Shipyard completes. So for the moment we're stuck on Mindoir unless we have a real emergency at which point we can make ourselves a wing of Gladius-Bs that can out-fly everything in the galaxy.
At the same time, we're sort of grinding off edges and putting the finishing touches on a lot of stuff on the business side, Some of this we should have hammered out awhile ago but never got around to, like getting business loans to facilitate rapid exponential growth, expanding into other sectors besides military and energy, and fleshing out security rules, so we can't just fade into a training montage for the next 12 months.
We should be coming out of this relatively soon, though. Keep in mind we're at basically Year 3 of a 12-15 year minimum Quest, so we're all just getting started really; by the end the galaxy will never be the same.

Dude, we have a 5 gigawatt power source, a power armor shell, and the option of buying room temperature superconductors from the Salarians.
You want a melee option? I've got two words for you: Omnitaser Supreme.
I know more jobs will be lost than we are willing to pay. But those he miners? Sure, they can be repurposed into other jobs... But that takes training and training takes money. No matter the tech, you need your space technicians highly trained, because it is too easy to die and lose your expensive spacecraft along with the squishy.
That specific group, we can help, cheaply, and benefitting the economy. The humans are tax deductible, and the rest are politic deductible.
I imagine every job like that has a similar safety training, which they can skip when going back. Even if we just make it interest free loans, it is something we should do.
And dear god yes an omnitaser. Heck, if we can get a lock on a sensor on a shuttle, or even a small frigate, we might be able to fry their computers.
No but it's based on CK2 and I LOVE that game. Of course that means I have a mental file full of things that I think would make it better and variant ideas. Thanks for pointing it out.
Hmm... Yes only one of those I never really got into was Sins. Sword of the stars was a personal favorite. The fact that they had Something like 6 FTL variants (Three primary types Gates, Free FTL, and Fixed Travel a couple of subversions of those IIRC) and the game still worked was amazing.
Good to know.

I'd point out that your free to borrow/hire protection to. Just basically make it so that when I try to figure out that the bad guys do I'm not trying to hard to ignore the little voice in my head pointing out how incrdibly easy you are to kill. I'm having to regularly stuffing my fingers in my ears and lalala-ing the voice pointing out that any sane violently hostile enemy would be dropping a fleet on Mindoir and tying to bomb you to hell and back*. You have pissed off people that are very powerful and currently have far more resources then you do. Unlike some RPGs they have little reason not to deal with you in the most effective manner possible that (they think) they can get away with. At the same time that kinda crap makes for poor game play, so I moderate it a bit (lot).
*No seriously, people having been talking about how much of a game changer this PI is. If PI was my enemy and I'd by trying do that.
Anyway, for example if you wanted to go look at some Prothean thingy Liara found, you could maybe ask the Alliance for some support or something. Sure you might get attacked still but then it be a fight!
Also on a related tangent part of the delay for actiony stuff is that I feel the need to give "fair warning" that stuffs up to the players so that you have a chance to prepare a bit. Before hand the game had gotten fairly... peace-timey? I'm only actual been in control for two quarters now and only for one real voting quarter.

Yeah, that's the real danger of the "Go it alone" option. I don't think Auks really expected everyone to take this route, and he wasn't really prepared for it. I wasn't even on SB back when this quest first started, but from some brief skims it seems like he expected everyone to partner with the Alliance and be inducted into a skunkworks project or something similar.
Really the only reasons I believe this has worked out without us getting killed early on was a combination of two factors, both outside our control:
It would be a political nightmare for Mindoir to be attacked again, so the Alliance would have tasked a rather serious amount of firepower to patrol the system and the nearby Relay; I'm thinking squadron or flotilla-level group on constant patrol, not just a cruiser wolfpack stopping by occasionally.
Mindoir itself is very small, and has probably been seriously paranoid about outsiders the past few years, to the point that any potential assassins will have been spotted before they could even land.

But according to Hoyr, the planet has gone from 3-5 million to almost 10 million. By the time PI was on the map galactically and we were defintiely worth assassinating, that immigration must have already started - so I doubt that sort of vigilance would have been possible.

Actually by the time the patenting process for the Arc Reactor was started, basically within a year of the Mindoir attack, Revy's chances of being personally assassinated basically vanished, at least by anyone other than the Batarians. Patent applications require disclosure of the patented object's construction, which means that the moment Revy gets killed then anyone can immediately go build a knockoff Arc Reactor and sell it, and whatever entrenched interest didn't want the Arc Reactor to exist gets to immediately die the death of a thousand cuts from every industry in the world mass-producing it, rather than being slowly bled to death by just PI.
In fact the moment the patent application went through those well-heeled interests would do their very best to keep Revy and PI alive, since at that point the only thing slowing the Arc Reactor from spreading across the galaxy like a plague is PI's own production bottleneck. We might have to deal with sabotage at our manufacturing plants, which is one reason I want Revy to hire her own construction division, but almost nobody will want to destroy the entire company, or even put it too much in jeopardy for fear of it selling the Reactor to H&K or something.
The only force, right now, that is really out to kill Revy personally, and PI generally, is the Batarians, and they're going to do it through some sort of mass attack, either orbital bombardment by "pirates" or by sending in a private army to pillage PI's headquarters. The first is stopped by the Systems Alliance's fleet in orbit (well more likely a squadron); the second is stopped by 3-5 million people who are jumpy about being put back in slave pens and make "See something, say something" a way of life.
Though I do wonder how important Mindoir has become to the Alliance, with the fact that we are on it and we are making most of our stuff. When we really begin pulling out the really big stuff, I could actually imagine them putting a fleet detachment over it just to keep us safe.

Selected News For 2173-Q3: Attempted Assassination of Claude Menneau
Claude Menneau, one of the two candidates for leadership of the Terra Firma Party, escaped an assassination attempt by one of his guards and the pilot of his ship. Mr. Menneau credits his survival to the arc-reactor powered shielding he had recently obtained.
"While I am not 100% behind her politics, I can definitely say that Dr. Rebecca Shepard delivers a good product."
Both the pilot and guard were killed and no leads regarding who was behind the assassination attempt have been found yet.
"I'm not saying it was my opponent, but I have little doubt the attack was politically motivated" said Mr. Menneau
The polls now show Claude Menneau with a five point lead over his opponent...
Kassa Unveils New Guardian Angel System for Arc-Reactor Powered Armor
Paragon Industries' Legionary Powered Armor has an impressive power budget and Kassa Fabrication's new Guardian Angel System put that to even better use. Each pair of units is a high-powered shield generator that interfaces with the existing shield system. Not only does each pair add one and half time the base Legionaries' shielding ability, but the system allows for these shields to be projected. Thus the soldier equipped with the system can protect injured comrades, critical targets, or civilians. In addition it turns the soldier into mobile terrain allowing them to block choke points and prevent passage.
Each unit plugs into one of the legionaries' shoulder mount slots allowing for flexible battlefield reconfiguration.
Pirate "Fleets" Sighted in the Terminus
Pirates usually operate in small groups and only congregate around pirate ports and trading areas. However, in the last few months pirate forces in the Terminus and Traverse have grouped into fleets.
Most credit this phenomena to the increased hostilities with the Systems Alliance. Individual pirate ships are unable to match warships in most cases; however, as the saying goes quantity has a quality all its own.
This has also increased the striking power of the pirates in the terminus, leading them be bolder in their attacks and attack more often. Something that has many Terminus powers worried and angry.
A minor but growing faction of Terminus powers has turned their wrath on the Systems Alliance, "Ten thousand citizens of Bivez died yesterday. Ten. Thousand. We were able to keep the pirate at bay before. But now their attacks are able to do significant damage. This is all the Systems Alliance's fault. Stay out of Terminus business humans, or we'll see about kicking you out!"
However, others disagree, "Speaker for Bivez has poor understanding," side the Speaker for Litinana, "Sometimes to cure one must sacrifice part of what is healthy. Pirates attack Systems Alliance. Systems Alliance destroys threat. Perfectly reasonable. If others are harmed then they clearly were not meant to be where they are." [Editorial note: Litiananian translations packages are fairly simple so they may be some errors]
Isolationists Rally
While many of their members come from the Terra Firma Party, members of the growing Isolationist Party come from every walk of life. Today's rally is an attempt to formalize the party's goals an stances on a verity of issues.
According to one member the rally was instigated in large part due to the Systems Alliance's increased activity in the Traverse and Terminus regions. "Getting involved there is really more trouble then its worth. Hell they don't want us there, we should stay out."
However, other people outside the Isolationist Party have observed that if thy didn't want us to get involved they should have said something sixteen years ago. "Bit too late now isn't it?"
Political Briefing 2173-Q3:
First off a quick briefing on two of the races mentioned in the news article you sent my way:
Bivez:
Technically the name of their planet, the race is actually called the Gento In simple terms they might be described visually as rat-people, which is probably offensive, but gets the point across. They have managed to maintain a stable government in the Terminus for about two hundred years. They have a fairly strong navy for a one world Terminus power, but it's mainly made up of escort frigates that serve to protect their trading ships from pirates.
The also are rather angry with the Systems Alliance for stirring up the pirates.
Litinana:
Both the name of the species and the planet the Litinana are humanoid and covered in fuzzy purplish red stuff that no ones know if it is clothing or fur (or something else). It's hard to say much else about their appearance as it seems to vary a great deal. Some have three fingers to a hand some five, height is all over the place, as are body ratios etc. That aside what the Litinana are good at is bioweapons. And by good at I mean able to make the Genophage look like the common cold. Pissing them off is a good way to die a horrible and painful death.
Thankfully the Litinana tend to stick to themselves, only speak up when they find something interesting or want to trade, and are extremely blunt. Pissing them off is pretty hard too. It's only happened three times, once when pirates landed on their world (which may have been their first space fairing contact), once when a pirate group attacked a Litinana ship, and once when someone tried to invade their planet. This resulted in the death of every pirate involved, an asteroid base filled with a mess of pus, and the complete extinction of the H'Jik race. Pirates wisely avoid them now and most other tip toe around them in fear of setting them off.
Citadel:
In territory closer to home some one has stirred up some anti-Human sentiment among other races. They've mostly been working the warlike and violent angle pointing out the Systems Alliance's activities in the Terminus and Traverse regions. Looking at the material there is a fair bit of spin being placed on everything.
We've gotten fingered a few times in the process. Mostly pointing to us as part of the human war machine or calling us merchants of death. Even Paragon Industries' more benign activities are either treated as cover ups for what we really want or treated as having a hidden agenda.
This stuff is minor now but as they say an ounce of prevention and all that.
On another front, what I'm sure is someone else is trying to discredit arc-reactor tech a bit. A small group of people are questioning the safety of "something that glows blue like that". Frankly that's all classic tinfoil hat stuff. There is also an article about a possible health hazard. Looking into it the original science is from a Hanar that observed that placing an arc-reactor in water would contaminate the water over time. Something we even include a warning about in the manual. Something to do with Palladium decay? The original science was part of an effort to figure out how to counter that so the Hanar could use arc-reactor technology more easily, but some sensationalist started running away with it.
The "Humans have Prothean tech they're not sharing" rumor has gain a little more traction as well.
Terminus:
Anti-human sentiment is growing here too. Not sure if purely "natural" or if someone is actively encouraging it. The afore mentioned News article hits most of the points here.
I'd recommend a brief ad campaign to counter the trend in Citadel space. Marketing says that flippant is the preferred flavor of the times.

Events for 2171-Q3: Scientist Salarian
"So anything interesting in the mailbox today Cortana?" You ask.
"You have four hundred and twenty-one pieces of spam, ten internal memos, five death threats, sixty-two thank you messages, and one message from the University of Sur'Kesh." your ever helpful VI informs you.
"That last one sounds interesting bring it up!" You'll get to the boring stuff later.
Dr. Rebecca Shepard,
Have looked at recent advances in biotechnology made by Paragon Industries. Would like to discuss possibility of applying some technologies to other races; believe that there could be great potential benefits from working on such a project. Some notes and thoughts in attached file.
Dr. Mordin Solus
University of Sur'Kesh
Looking into Mordin Solus' background you quickly discover that he is a not only an expert in the field of genetics, but also quite competent in other fields. He also seems to like the arts particularly singing. Your investigators check him over and he is legitimate as far as they can tell. He's a Salarian professor and nothing more.

Fleet Upgrades
"You have an incoming call Doctor," you VI informs you.
"From?"
"Caller ID is Admiral Steven Hackett of the fifth fleet." Cortana informs you.
"Okay put him though, " you say.
"Hello, you are speaking with Doctor Rebecca Shepard of Paragon Industries how may I help you?" you greet cordially, the Alliance calling usually means more money and more money means more research!
"Admiral Hackett Alliance Fifth Fleet." he greats you "I've been ordered to draw up plans for some of the new block upgrades to our ships. Obviously several technologies Paragon Industries produces have potential in this field. I have a large discretionary budget for developing any upgrades so funding shouldn't be an issue."
"Well I guess it depends on how quick of an upgrade you want... Several of the technologies we offer are fairly simple to plug-in. The Fire Control and Point Defense VI based on the one the Tiger IFV use is extremely simple to install, I think we could easily offer a per ship license if you computers are setup the way I believe they are. Arc-reactors are also simple. Though you may need to upgrade the power-grid. Arc-reactors produce an incredible amount of power for their size you could power an entire dreadnaught off of a few industrial scale ones tossed in the back of the cargo hold. 160 Terrawatts of power is just over twenty-five cubic meters. Adding extra shield projectors should be easy enough from there."
You pause a moment to let that sink in enjoying his raised eyebrows, "We also have some new stealth anti-laser armor plate, better than Tungsten base, but inferior to carbon. Though at a much better price then carbon armor. A more significant upgrade would take time, mostly involving optimizing the power systems, upgrading GARDIAN lasers if need be, figuring what to do with the space the fusion reactor used to take up and replacing the engine housings and putting repulsors in.
"The quick stuff would be readily doable for any ship class. Main limit is production. At the moment though I think we're only able to develop a full upgrade to a frigate."
"All of those sound like things the Alliance would like. The VI upgrade and enough arc-reactors sets for our active dreadnaughts would be worth getting sooner rather than later. Shall we get down to the finer details?"
The Alliance would like: (May combine choices)
[ ] 647 Fire Control and Point Defense VIs 64.7 million credits now, 4 million credits service and care per quarter. Delivered this quarter.
[ ] Five sets of four 40TW arc-reactors and cabling. 2.5 billion profit per set, 10,000 production per set. Delivered the sooner the better, each set can be delivered individually (Earliest looks like 2174-Q1)

In addition the the Systems Alliance will pay you to develop the following within the next two years (Research vote later!). In addition the SA will buy Block upgrade packages once they are developed.
Huai-Hai Class Frigate Block 6 Upgrade (50 RP): The oldest and most numerous of the SA's ships. 200 million credits development money. (Requires Frigates) Waterloo Class Frigate Block 3 Upgrade (50 RP): SA's newer frigate deployed 6 years after the first contract war. 150 million credits development money. (Requires Frigates) Geneva Class Cruiser Block 4 Upgrade (100 RP): A lighter cruiser for Skirmishing. 250 million credits development money. (Requires Light Cruisers) Tokyo Class Cruiser Block 3 Upgrade (100 RP): The main combatant of the SA's space forces. 350 million credits development money. (Requires Heavy Cruisers) Everest Class Dreadnought Block 7 Upgrade (150 RP): The elder of the SA's two Dreadnaught designs. 500 million credits development money. (Requires Dreadnaughts) Kilimanjaro Class Dreadnaught Block 2 Upgrade (150 RP): The SA's brand new warship design. Already out of date. 600 million credits development money. (Requires Dreadnaughts)
Special Event: Hacking Detected!
A sharp tone wakes you from you rest. You had again fallen asleep toying with a gadget into you lab. As you raise you head a small bolt you slept on stuck to your face for a moment before falling back down.
"Doctor, Security has detected anomalous activity in the research and security servers. They believe a hacker is trying to gain access, but the method they are using is to access the systems is unknown." Cortana informs you.
"And shutting down the servers might make a physical attack easier. So call that plan D." You say, "Odds the hacking is a prelude to a physical attack?"
"Probable, the targeting of the security server puts the odds well over 70%."
"Make sure everyone that needs to know, knows. I'm going to..."
Do what?
