Why Nami? She's busy being navigator, with gardening, and managing the money. All well and good, but she shouldn't be in charge. You don't want the miser in a position of authority. That leads to anyone below her being indebted to the point of indentured servitude. That last part's a joke...maybe.

Luffy doesn't need to be smart to be captain. He just has to know he isn't the smartest person on the ship. He is really, really stupid, but he knows that much.

What Luffy has is empathy and charisma for days, weeks, however long the journey takes and beyond.

That makes him a Captain.

I changed my mind about Taylor and Zoro's placing.

Taylor is a competent leader and knows how to organize stuff. That makes her a great second. Zoro takes no shit and can intimidate or brute force into compliance if needed. A good thing to have for a subordinate commander as well.

Nami is out for reasons I already gave. She's busy with other jobs/hobbies, and we don't want the greedy one (Queenie described her as such) in a position of authority like that.

We shouldn't feed Queenie's ego any further with an actual command spot for her.

Kaya is still a sort-of client, sort of ship diplomat. So he has her specialty and isn't really suited to combat command anyway.

Ah, if Taylor is second and Zoro is third that suits both their personalities, but Taylor tops if she wants.... :ogles:

Talking about Merry has reminded me. Who's going to save the gang at Ennies, assuming we don't derail that. I don't think Bast would, she's been raised as a ruthless pirate ship and the gang stole her. Not too much attachment.

That's a recipe for confused command in a given situation, since sometimes a situation can be uncertain (does this call for diplomacy, intimidation, or are they about to attack?). Kaya is better than Nami at diplomacy, anyway. Hell, that may be her specialty.
It is, but it's still better than the 'command structure' the Straw Hats have in canon. And it's kinda like what the Undersiders had, with Brian, Lisa and Taylor all sort of being leaders with Brian as the Captain. I didn't suggest Kaya because we don't know yet if she'll be sticking around after we reach her Family estate. Besides, the issue of Nami vs Zoro only comes up if both Luffy and Taylor aren't around. Which, now that I've mentioned it, will probably happen every damn time.

Taylor is a control freak of literal multiversal proportions. I don't think she'd be willing to let anyone take charge, especially not an idiot like Luffy. Nami is objectively the person who knows most about sailing and Tashigi is sensible and organized. Oh, and we may as well tie her to the ship as much as we can.

Would Taylor want to be captain though? She's always been fine working with and under people she's respected before.

Yes, she would. She's absolutely not fine working under people. Control is her entire schtick. She certainly doesn't respect Luffy's intelligence or competence. You can think someone is well-intentioned and still think he's an idiot. That's basically Luffy in a nutshell and someone like Taylor would rather saw off her own foot than leave Luffy in charge.

I doubt we'd stay in character for this (quest's gone OOC pretty consistently anyway), but if she were in character, she'd either push for herself as captain or support Nami. She'd try to manipulate Tashigi into the third seat in order to tie her to the ship, and because Tashigi is a marine officer and therefore actually knows how to work a fucking ship.

First off Robin may not actually join, second we may not make our way to water 7 the Bast is a nice ship and third Taylor has a long range if Spandam gets anywhere near the buster call button it will be the last thing he will do. It's kinda hard to protect a squishy person from a fairly omnipresent power.

Let's face it. Taylor would stuff a wasp up his nose before he gets anywhere near that button. Or, more likely, she'd kill every transponder snail in the entire base before the assault so he can't even justify himself.

It seems to largely work for the Strawhats in canon. They're doing well.

But this isn't canon. Then again, Luffy, Taylor, Zoro isn't canon either.

Luffy is the heart of the crew, he's also the visionary in a sense-wanting his crew to all achieve their dreams.

Taylor is the strategist, able to assign jobs and command in a battle.

Per Oda, Zoro is the 'eldest son' in the family that is the crew. We should encourage that protective/big brother instinct. And it's a good place as the one who may be called on to lay down the law or help lead depending on what's needed.

That's part of the reason Taylor shouldn't be captain. Let go of some control.

The crew has been sailing for weeks now. They're all getting by and Taylor as second can ask the others for advice.

Tashigi actually would make a solid third if she was more assertive. I think she could fit into the role. Certainly better than Nami, who would without a doubt ruthlessly abuse actual authority. I'd consider it if Zoro and Nami weren't neck and neck for third.

She bullies the crew on money matters and other things as it is. Don't give her actual legitimacy.

The whale before them was... Taylor didn't know what to compare it to. A skyscraper, maybe?
Damn.
"No chain of command," Garp grumbled under his breath again.

Taylor sighed. It was going to happen eventually. When the crew was much smaller it was a non-issue, but now that they had more members they were going to need a proper way to set things up.
I just realized that chains of command can be visualized as actual chains.
Its eyes alone were bigger than the Bast.
Daaaaamn.
"Crocus."

"... Garp."

"I'm on vacation," Garp said.

"... I'm retired." Crocus returned.

"Good."
DAAAAAAAAAMN. Can someone explain their history? I haven't seen that episode yet.
