It doesn't really matter if Luffy's captain or not. He'll still be making the majority of non-tactical non-strategic decisions. Might as well let him keep the title and the diplomatic/reputational weight it carries, and let the person who knows how inter-gang—sorry 'inter-pirate'—relations do the hard work.

Also, I trust Nami's greed, empathy, and sense of direction to make her a better stand in leader than Zoro with his potent shounen and cluelessness. Zoro's a boss character, not a leader of men. It's useful to have him as third though, as an attack leader and intimidation method.

"Why is everyone doing what you say? He's the captain, and they're the second and third."
"I have a particular set of skills, that make me a nightmare for people like—well, actually, just people in general. They had to come up with a new maritime position to fit me."

I imagine Taylor resisting the second in command position (Are we going actual pirate crews with a quartermaster, or is this naval?)

Huh, I'm kinda surprised nobody is voting for Taylor as captain. I mean, I get it, but still. Eh, chances are she'll end with most of the administrative authority regardless, and Luffy just points the way.
Plus, new world means new history which means a whole bunch of new toes to step on or taboos to break before anyone can tell the extra-universal Captain Taylor they exist...

I have a soft spot for the classic line up. Also Nami is always in control no matter her position.

Honestly I can see Taylor and Zoro sharing a nebulous and mostly undefined position of authority in that when they speak people listen. With Taylor being the more active.

I guess it's because it wouldn't feel right if he wasn't? Being Captain means a lot to Luffy and a lot of Taylor's issues involve her needing to be in control or have power, and I guess I would like Taylor to reach a point where she's okay letting that go?

I agree with this, but I think Zoro being First Mate and Taylor being Second Mate (mates...hehe) reflects that better. Zoro was technically recruited b Luffy first, so he's First Mate. And the crew will listen to them both, but Taylor knows how to run things.

The thing about Zoro being First Mate is...I don't think I can recall a moment where he actually gave an order or advice to anyone other than "stay out of my fight!" He's not big on talking and explanations outside of swords, so his capability as First Mate is limited. Taylor has a much greater depth of experience and tactics to draw on, and is constantly expanding her knowledge base to improve herself in multiple directions.

Taylor doesn't need to be Vice-captain to get people to listen to her. Nami does it all the time in canon.

But seriously, even if Luffys the captain, the rest will keep him straight.

Nami is geared towards making the most money. That's a good thing to have...to advise. But not in a command position.

Zoro has a better head for combat than Nami does, so he's suited for taking charge in a more fight-y situation, or when intimidation is required. Nami'd be better at diplomacy. Taylor has enough of both to be above them, but I agree that I don't she wants to be captain.

That's a recipe for confused command in a given situation, since sometimes a situation can be uncertain (does this call for diplomacy, intimidation, or are they about to attack?). Kaya is better than Nami at diplomacy, anyway. Hell, that may be her specialty.

Kinda of surprised too.

Luffy is... kind of incompetent as a captain. He doesn't know the first thing about the role.

I see it more as the divide between the strategic level and tactical level decisions. Taylor is great at Administrating, but she doesn't really have a grand vision so to speak. If anything, she has a tendency to hyperfocus on the situation in front of her to the exclusion of all else. Great for getting things done, not so keeping perspective in long-term planning

If you had picked the Merry earlier, this is where the ship would sink and Laboon would become you ship from here on out.
Can we not trade up anyway?

Zoro's place as Luffy's second is adorable in canon but I figure Taylor's better prepared to lead the crew. Luffy still being first since seems kinda important for his dream.
