Try to survive the Winter: A planquest in Fantasy Colonial America

Ghostnose Dogs sound like they'll suffer in a town full of Ghosts, but that sensor ability is too good to pass.
I bet they will learn pretty quickly the differnce from the good ghost and the bad ghost. Also the "scent" of the ghost in town will become normal to them too while non native supernatural stuff like winter or tribuate taker will still have them howling

[X] Spiritteeths [Dog] : The teeths of those dogs are sharp, and cut deep. More importantly, when one of them tried to bite the ankle of one of the Blade, I felt pain from the bond I share with them… The dogs have sharp teeths that can harm supernatural beings.

[X] Halfdead [Dog] : The dogs are small, compared to the shepherd dogs of Europe, with long noses. However, they are strangely strong and enduring, able to run for an entire day and throw on his back a full grown man. The dogs are stronger and more endurant than dogs of their size should be able to be.

[X] Ghostnoses [Dog] : These dogs don't bark, they howl, and they howl a lot in Union. It seems they can…smell the ghosts present in the town, and have learned to fear the specters of Winter. The dogs can smell the supernatural.

Doing so will probably take training, aka dice. Given how much we still have to do come autumn, not crazy about that.

Plus, detecting supernatural threats is probably the area that we're most vulnerable in ATM. The Masked Merchant being able to infiltrate Union while everyone else was busy being a key example of this.
Actually, I think we have that covered, courtesy of Whispers from the Grave. If they can warn the Unionists over minor injuries, I'm pretty sure they

I think they all require training though, unless there's outright confirmation from @OldShadow that the Ghostnoses will either require more training than the others, or have penalties that the others won't have until they are trained.

All dogs will adapt in time to Union (so Ghostnoses learning the "smell" of the Freed for example)but for now they are not tamed. You do not have pets yet, you have a pack of semi-wild dogs eating vermines and helping on hunts.

Hhm ghostnoses has got me thinking do our cats have anything special right now or in the future can they sense spirits or ward away bad ones and how affective they are in vermin annihilation and I know they are right now old world cats but in future they become main coons which are massive fluffy death machine to all things smaller than them.

Question, can we select/breed for traits like these? Like minor supernatural abilities in the dogs? Cause I kinda want to develop Dresden style Foo Dogs.

You have a few cats that are only starting to breed.
They are good mousers.
In the future, who know ?

Good good let our little fluffy death machines grow big and many. But seriously cats are one of the most successful invasive species and are one of best in taking out native species otl.

Also did Sara adopt cat or kitten cause I think this image Sara fits more than my previous attempt.

And yes this is Arya from asoiaf and she and Sara kinda are similar.

What do you think about my point of already handling the "supernatural detection" issue?
We already saw last Winter how the Freed could be drawn off for their Counter to be triggered by other spiritual assaults, and so it's wise to continue gathering more methods of specifically supernatural defense. Plus, the Ghostnoses are likely to be more mobile than our other methods of supernatural detection ATM, or at least require less work to get to accompany groups travelling far from Union compared to setting up reliquaries for the Freed or spending the Death Singing dice to get the Mourners heading out.

I would say that either Halfdead or Ghostnose are more useful than Spiritteeths, but I'm not so sure that one is outright better than the other in our current situation. Halfdead seems it would make the dogs better at everything they'd normally be good at doing (so better hunting results, probably also can be used to provide boosts to Expeditions/raids), while Ghostnose would give them alternate capabilities (Either an active or passive defense against supernatural infiltration since they'd be able to detect that sort of thing, and maybe helping with hunting more supernatural creatures that rely on stealth rather than force.)

Either one is contingent on them being trained/tamed though I imagine.

Something else to consider is that if we pick Halfdead we gain a vauable animal that we can sell to Europe, because having a small hunting dog strong as a pitbull would be quite valuable back in the Old World, and these dogs are still "normal" enough that would not raise any supernatural alarms

Hmm, maybe. Though it'll probably be a generation or so before we're willing to sell dogs back home (particularly since Sara can detect something "odd" about them which implies that Lazarites and other supernaturally sensitive people in Europe would be able to as well.) And well, the name "Halfdead" doesn't exactly imply a lack of supernatural oddities.

I won't deny that I am tempted to swap over entirely to Halfdead rather than voting for both it and Ghostnoses though. Better results from Hunting (particularly now that it's a Task) and probably helping on Expeditions and raids would be pretty nice.

Well dogs reach sexual maturity in a year, have a gestation period of 60 days, and can birth up to 2 litters per year, so that generation is going to be quite short...

Besides that, we already have good reliable ways of damaging the supernatural, and we are going to get ways of detecting the supernatural soon anyways (with the Reliquaries and Songs for the weary warriors) so the versatility of Halfdead seems best for us than the specialisations...
