IIRC the Sage Emperor was struck by dragon lightning as a baby and was perfectly fine, so who knows what comes about naturally, even if it's only one in ten million or some such.
I feel like that event itself, assuming it actually happened and isn't just a "my country's founder could beat up your country's founder" definitely counts as something unnatural.
I'm pretty sure all the Ducals would be considered to have Talent 5 plus some specializations that let them act is if it's higher, kind of like what Xiulan ... acquired. We know that tribulation didn't get Lanlan a full extra level of Talent, so there's certainly ways for 5+ to differ from 6.
I'd definitely say it's more likely that they (CRX, Meizhen and Lilling) are talent 6 like Qi (though those number abstractions don't really work for non player characters as yrs mentioned before). Remember that these ones aren't even "normal" ducals. Those three are considered the best of their families or actual heirs. They are above average even among the best in the empire. In that quote you posted YRS said the average was from 4-5, and they are anything but average even without their resources. Qi is catching up only because the realms are getting longer and longer so the head start they had means less and less.
This is sort of where I was going with that, yeah. With the note that the Zheng are much more atypical in this regard than the Bai. I don't think most clans would actually assassinate their scions, but I think they'll definitely pressure them to form a 'proper Way' and that this will inevitably break the nascent Ways of many of those who don't fit the mold.
Like, yes, for people temperamentally suited to the Clan's Ways it's a huge advantage having that institutional knowledge to draw on. For people who don't fit in, it's an enormous disadvantage because most Ducal Clans are not at all flexible in their thinking.
Eh, even for a ducal who doesn't fit in, I wouldn't call it a disadvantage. As long as you aren't getting actually murdered for your mindset/way, you are still a significant leg up on a lower class cultivator. What probably happens is you get sent off to dine out of the way place, and only given the most minor of allowances… which is probably still more than what the heir of a baron would get.
So what's the hard counter to Cai Renxiang? As you said, she dispels wet blanket nonsense like it's nothing, and she still hits like a motherfucker against straightforward enemies.
I imagine speed based brawler. No sustained effects, just move fast and hit hard. While CRX does have area code level nukes, at this point a speed cultivator could probably still dodge those. Then just punch hard back.
Another possibility would be a cycle focused cultivator, specifically on cycling out which arts are in use. You could try to make stuff that gives a bonus when it gets dispelled, but purity focused dispels have a good chance of countering that aspect, would just come down to art quality and strength, and I don't think CRX falls behind there.
That said, while it's harder to search for - I'd probably need to do a reread of the whole story to find the cites - Ling Qi has been steadily gaining on all of the Ducals in cultivation over the course of the story. Not just CRX, who has the excuse that she spends a lot of time doing things that might not count as cultivating.
Not really - it's more that that 3 month starting gap means less and less as we advance. At the start that was an entire realm. Now it's like half a stage.
"I think I want to create a song of the world's ending," Ling Qi mused.
Sixiang cocked an eyebrow.
Ling Qi ignored them."The ending that happens every year, with winter, old things laid to rest, buried in the snow, some rot and become fuel some continue on into the next year. And when winter itself ends, the blanket of white over the world becomes its new lifeblood."
Because she did believe in Cai Renxiang, that they could build something better, change old truths, and make things whole cloth where needed. But they wouldn't be the last. Shu Yue's words came back to her, and Ling Qi wondered, was this something like their own conviction?
Someone would come after them, and then they would be the ones in the way, the old thing to be buried, wouldn't they?
That thought lingered, and it did bother her a little, but she couldn't say it would change her path.
"Mm, my sister doesn't think small huh," Hanyi said frowning. "You know, are you really gonna be happy like that?"
Ling Qi tilted her head, giving the question some real consideration. "I don't think I could be happy ignoring the big things."
Hanyi sighed. "...Kay, can be do some real practice now though, all this reading is boooring."
Ling Qi smiled, Hanyi might have changed outwardly, but she was still the same at heart. She caught Sixiang's eye then, and the muse gave her a concerned look. Ling Qi flicked her eyes away.
"Sure, we can get some practice in," Ling Qi said. Studying others' works was helpful. It jogged forth ideas, gave inspiration, but in the end, you still had to do your own creating. The materials she'd gathered had filled her mind with ideas…

Although most had come from the Meng materials, and their long meditations on natural phenomena. The cold of the Meng marshlands was different from the harsh mountain cold she was more accustomed too, but there was much to consider all the same.
Ling Qi stood, and a wave of her hand returned the table and all of its contents to her storage ring. Cai Renxiang was right, keeping furniture on hand was just plain useful. With it gone, they stood together on the windswept peak as Sixiang vanished in a shower of colorful dissolving butterflies and Hanyi stood up.
"Want to show me what you've been working on first little sister?" Ling Qi asked.
"Yeah!" Hanyi said with a grin, throwing her shoulders back. "Take a look at this!"
Hanyi began to sing, and Ling Qi listened closely, the song was light and graceful, resembling the piece Ling Qi had helped her compose some time ago for that last concert before the journey south. But more strident and… mature, for lack of a better word.
And as Hanyi began to sing flurries of snow crystallized in the wind that whipped up around her, falling flakes and pebbles of hail. Hanyi sang and the bite of the wind grew sharper, the hems of her gown kicked up as her bare feet left the stone, carried aloft on the wind. Ling Qi felt Hanyi's qi thinning, diffusing out into the surrounding air. Flurries became a curtain of snow and sleet.
A veil of glittering frost lengthened her gown, shadowed her face in a veil of shadow and crystal, and the song grew softer as she seemed to retreat into the snowfall, a tall lithe shadow in the snow.
Ling Qi reached out a hand, feeling the driving snow on her fingers, infused with potent qi that left a faint buzzing feeling on her fingers as it tried to drain away her qi. She felt the tug at her mind too, riveting her attention on her singing little sister. The power of the technique muddled a bit on her, unable to take hold on her thoughts, but…
"False affection, desire to protect. It'll be real hard for anyone to take aim and hurt her on purpose," Sixiang whispered.
And it was preparation, Ling Qi could tell constantly expelling ice qi, filling the air with snow, layering it up potent and ready for use in further techniques, and diffusing what did try to strike her through it. It was an opening move.
Snow Maiden's Silhouette: G3
Type: Cold, Construct, Compulsion
Duration: Scene
The opening of winter, the cold wind entering the stage, the beauty of the first snow, falling sparkling upon the earth. With your song the frost and ice gathers, becomes your veil and train, you walk upon the air, Idol of the cold breeze, beautiful and captivating beyond measure. Enhances the Lonely Winter Maiden trait by two while active, and reduces the potency of damaging techniques which directly target the user by one.
Naturally, Ling Qi smiled at the shadowed maidens silhouette, calling for her in the snow. "Hanyi, did you really make a technique just to seem taller?"
The haunting song cut off, and the shadow in the snow glared at her with glittering white eyes, planting hands on their hips. "Big Siiiiis, let me be cool!"
"You're very cool, for sure," Ling Qi apologized. She stepped into the falling snow, ignoring the faint tingle the flesh shattering chill left on her skin, and wrapped her junior sister in a hug. Up close the ice that had gathered, lengthening her gown and veiling her face did look very elegant. "I'm just teasing, it looks very effective. It sets up for other techniques, right?"
She stepped back, frost glittering on the front of her gown and Hanyi sniffed irritably at Ling Qi, crossing her arms over her chest. "Hmph, yeah it does, it'll let me build up my power, and protect me while I do."
"It's a good idea for an opening line," Ling Qi said thoughtfully.
"So, what do you have Big Sis? Thought of how you're going to start your song yet?" Hanyi challenged.
"I've had some thoughts," Ling Qi said.
In many ways it tied in to the thoughts she had been having. The conversation with Jaromila in the south, the performance at the Sect, even the visit in the Dream only a few days ago. In her mind she had come to a conclusion on truth. Endings, the ones she created, the ones she inflicted, they should pave the way for something else. If she killed, she wished to do so knowing that there was some purpose, something advanced or improved in the doing.
"I think most people think that. It doesn't stop what we saw under that mountain," Sixiang whispered.
That was the trouble Ling Qi thought when thinking in terms of seasons, of cycles it was easy to find only stagnation. To repeat your actions and expect a different result. But… she thought that was the wrong way to approach the thought. Shu Yue's words too contributed to this. The expectations of Cai Renxiang's Mother contributed to this.
Even if one turning rhymed with the last, if there were certain base similarities. Things were not the same. Cai Renxiang was not Cai Shenhua, and Ling Qi was not Shu Yue, nor Xia Ren or any other. Else it was worse than worthless. It was only the horror and nightmare they had trodden lightly on in the dream.
And she had found some support for that in the writing of Meng artists. In meditations on the turnings of years and centuries. Of loss and nostalgia.
+1 XP to Cycles Concept. Cycles 0 Advances to I
The seasons turn, but the past year is not repeated.
…In many ways, it touched on the terrible, scouring light she had seen in her liege's memory. It was not darkness, it was its opposite. But she understood now, that it was very much a thing of Ending, ending and creation.
"Hey, Big Sis, you just gonna stand there looking mournful in the snow?" Hanyi called out, shaking her out of her thoughts. Her junior sister stood there in her normal garb again arms crossed and an eyebrow raised.
"Sorry, I lost myself in thought," Ling Qi said ruefully. "I was going to show you some of what I had in mind, right?
Ling Qi began to hum to herself, turning away from Hanyi to stride across the cold stone well away from where her junior sister had made her own display. Faint outlines of frost formed around her footfalls as she did, and in her hand, a length of clear blue tinted ice began to form. A flute, glittering and half transparent, much like Zeqing had once used while instructing her. She raised the flute to her lips, allowing her eyes to drift half closed as she began to play some experimental bars.
The Aria of Springs Ending, was the first technique of Zeqing's Frozen Soul Serenade. It was a melody that sounded off the end of warmth, the obliteration of life. It was Springs Ending, because here in the eternal cold of the mountain peak there would never be a spring. It was not what Ling Qi wanted. Hanyi had chosen to focus its cold emanations in upon herself, retaining its defensive properties while transforming its aesthetic, making it her gown and veil.
But Ling Qi instead wished to focus it outward, and to that end, in her mind's eye, she envisioned….
[ ] A field of falling snow, cold and heavy, would begin with her and follow her stride, but lay where she had been and grow deeper where she lingered. A blanket of white which would bury the old, and render the battlefield a silent, still and soft field of white, whose melting would fuel the future.
[ ] Glittering ice, pure and transparent, forming in the emanations of her song. Cold to put the world into slumber. Ice creeping across every surface and every foe, stilling and silencing. A field of ice flowers blooming from the old and the stagnant and dead, to shatter and grant their heat to the future.
AN: Okay folks, this one is voting for the overall aesthetic of your successor, and with that decided we'll then get down into the techniques themselves.

Leaning towards this, but either sounds pretty great tbh

I think ice is preferable to snow for a combat technique even just in terms of aesthetics, but both are indeed super pretty.
Wow, both are very evocative and got would probably look great. Think I prefer:

Something about a field of ice flowers shattering for the future sounds really cool. (no pun intended)
I kind of like the idea that aesthetically Hanyi's Winter techniques are visualized via Snow and Ling Qi's via Ice. That might help distinguish between the two in fight scenes. That said, both prompts sound very appealing.
I feel like the Glittering Ice aesthetic would work better within out Mist. Just the water particles in the mist turning into frost, freezing our enemies into statues? Snow too feels like it'd be too material imo. I don't want our enemies trudging through snow, I want them to be drained of heat by the true Cold.

The ice flowers seem very cool but I think I prefer the serene and quiet snowfield.

Both are great images, but I think snow fits much more neatly with stillness and silence in particular than ice. The latter, to me, conjures a much more cutting image, new growth rather than the end of the old slowly and peacefully smothering everything away.
Heh heh. Killer flowers. [X] Glittering ice, pure and transparent, forming in the emanations of her song. Cold to put the world into slumber. Ice creeping across every surface and every foe, stilling and silencing. A field of ice flowers blooming from the old and the stagnant and dead, to shatter and grant their heat to the future.
I change my mind (and I'll probably do it again), I want the ice flowers. I had an image in my head of Zhengui's ash falling like snow, winter sleet as Hanyi's storm blows in, the icy flowers in the soil blooming like frosty fractals about the battlefield. GLORIOUS! Hmm, if we're dealing purely with aesthetics, then I'd definitely prefer the ice flowers to the snow. Ice just has more room for variation. Plus a lot of snow as a deadly force is tied up in the idea of the blizzard, which is both Wind and Cold. Currently Ling Qi's Wind is developing as the element of her personal expression and of joy, while Ling Qi's Cold is tied more in how she faces the world. In that light, I don't really like the idea of making Wind a weapon again.
Must admit, bit salty over the missed narrative bonus. Like missing out on concept bonus exp from the rolls was fine. But a big thing such as a narrative bonus really should deserve omake investment or not be part of a roll at all considering that it came from the notes of a ducal house.

In my opinion a field of fresh snow fits thematically better with how much LQ silences her opponents. Especially the melting fuelling the future speaks to me.
True, thus just a bit salty but still. It is a bit weird tho for yrs to say that it was just concept xp we missed out on after the rolls, to then change his mind and add that we missed narrative bonuses later.

Gonna vote for both, pending any salt and ash convincing arguments for both.
