There Was A Different Idea: An MCU Producer Quest

Quick question, does this MCU's version of Black Widow have any superhuman abilities? Pretty sure she had some version of the super soldier serum in the comics, but the OTL MCU never really mentioned it beyond alluding to the Red Room's enhancements in the Black Widow film (and that bit was mostly taking about removing uteruses (uteri?), so...)

I just checked the Internet, and it said no. She and Hawkeye are the Batmen of the OTL Avengers in terms of superpowers.

To Maggia or not to Maggia - Planning Session: Iron Man 2 (November 2009)
The Winning Vote said:
[X] Plan Threading The Compromise Needle 3: The Plan Maker Has No Originality With Names
-[X] [Morse] Bobbi Morse will pretend to be a new bodyguard for Pepper, hired after her ascension to CEO, and sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. after Tony's irresponsible behavior in order to keep an eye for future attacks and theft attempts on the Iron Man technology.
-[X] [Arc] Tony has been been through some physical trauma. The arc reactor in his chest is the only thing keeping him alive, but it's also a weird and untested technology sitting in his chest. A potential side effect could be that the very thing keeping him alive is also killing him. Knowing he has limited time to live could certainly explain Tony driving away the all of the people who are closest to him. (Favreau's Choice)
-[X] [Pepper] Advance from the last movie even more; Tony and Pepper will be officially dating from the beginning, getting engaged at the end of the movie.
-[X] [Maggia] You can at least try to convince him. (Negotiation Roll)
Bobbi Morse will be Pepper's bodyguard, and Favreau accepted the decision with hardly any complaints. As far as he's concerned it would work perfectly what with Tony trying (and failing) to clean up his act somewhat now that he and Pepper are dating. A quick change in Stark's introduction showing them having a moment before he jumps into the Stark Expo was discussed and added afterward.

In the end why change what works? Stark being poisoned and having to find a cure works perfectly as a metaphor on his life being poisoned by the Stark name and the sins of the father. It really shows how much Favreau has been working on the movie that so far every small part is perfectly connected with each other.

This kind of makes you feel bad about the argument you had with him when you brought up the possibility of adding the Maggia to the story. Blowing up might not be the best way to describe it, but it's a close second.

But you're determined on this course; ever since you took over as the head Producer of the MCU you've had this...burst of ideas and inspiration that have stalked you day and night. That's where you had the thought of introducing Wonder Man to the roster, and that same instinct now told you that the Maggia will be one of the best recurring enemies for the Avengers to tackle in the future!

...You'll have to find a way to handle the Kree as well, but you're sure you'll think of something!

Negotiation Roll: 76

Favreau does not like the idea. He really doesn't, he does not want to add an enemy for future avengers, and he does not want to in any way deviate from what he had already set up as an emotional struggle for Tony just so that the Movie serves as a promotional advertisement for future Marvel movies.

It was only a mix of your own skill at knowing what to say, along with a small reminder that technically you are his boss that he eventually agreed, even if he was gritting his teeth all the while, to at least include some measure of the Maggia in the film.

You should feel happy, but at the same time you can't help but feel that you'll have to handle this carefully lest the fragile balance between you collapses.

[] [Maggia] The Maggia will have a small role in the movie; it will mostly consist of Justin Hammer mentioning his new contracts and a small cameo of characters showing a symbol or two of the organization. Fans will surely understand who they are talking about.
[] [Maggia] The Maggia will have a medium role in the movie; one of their agents will contact Justin Hammer and Ivan Vanko offering them aid in their vendetta against Tony Stark, but aside from that they will remain in the shadows.
[] [Maggia] The Maggia will have a greater role in the movie; There will be three agents altogether who will coordinate with both Ivan Vanko and Justin Hammer in order to steal the Iron Man technology, with a confrontation against them at the end.
[] [Maggia] The Maggia will be the main instigator and the main enemy in the movie, both Ivan Vanko and Justin Hammer are just patsies as they move everything from behind the shadows to take over Stark Enterprises and control the Iron Man technology. (Favreau will not direct a third Iron Man film if selected).
[] [Maggia] Something Else: Write In

The Maggia has a rich and varied history within Marvel, made up of many amazing and colorful members that you're sure many in the audience would find charming and fun...If you owned the rights to them that is! Most of the more popular members of the Maggia made their debut in Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and Daredevil, you can't use them at all!

At least there are some who debuted in either the Avengers or Iron Man (without mentioning the many issues that just didn't have the heroes name in them), so you have a selection...not the most glamorous one, but it's one at least.

Only vote for these options if you selected for the appearance of at least one character of the Maggia.

[] [Characters] Madame Masque did make her first appearance in Iron Man.
[] [Characters] Count Luchino Nefaria would require some changes, but it can be done.
[] [Characters] Frank and Bruno Costa are not prominent in the comics, but both can make an appearance.
[] [Characters] Technically the original Eel is a Maggia member. You'd have to call him Leopold Stryke.
[] [Characters] Well, the original Porcupine was Maggia. His name was Alexander Gentry.
[] [Characters] The Unicorn, Milos Masaryk, could also work.

When it came to the story finale there was a formula to follow in Superhero stories: There is climactic clash between the forces of good and the forces of evil. And Favreau does not intend to break it this time around (perhaps someday).

[] [Climactic Fight] Ivan Vanko attacks the Stark Expo alongside the Drones he created with Justin Hammer and the War Machine armor (which is being controlled by him). Iron Man works with Bobbi Morse to find a way to break the control.
[] [Climactic Fight] Ivan Vanko first lets the Drones and War Machine armor attack the Stark Expo while he waits for the right time to attack. Iron Man holds them down as Bobbi Morse tries to break down the control over the War Machine Armor.
[] [Climactic Fight] Ivan Vanko attacks Iron man directly after finding his location while the Drones and the War Machine armor attack the Stark Expo. Bobbi Morse has to find a way to break the control over them.
[] [Climactic Fight] Something Else: Write In

Another idea that you came up with and introduced to Favreau involved the character of Justin Hammer. Mainly, that since he was mostly being used by Vanko in the end, perhaps he could be of aid to the heroes in trying to stop Vanko in the final fight.

[] [Hammer] Yes, Justin Hammer will aid (if reluctantly) the heroes in order to stop Vanko (and not get jailed/media purposes).
[] [Hammer] No, Justin Hammer will remain as a villain, refusing to aid the heroes.

With all of that done, you only needed to find a good title for the film.

[] [Title] Iron Man 2
[] [Title] Iron Man: Sins of the Father
[] [Title] The invincible Iron Man
[] [Title] Iron Man: Spy Games
[] [Title] Something Else: Write In

I want the explicit beat in the climax of Tony knowing he needs help and asking for it.

I agree with Favreau that the Maggia shouldn't be just a setup for Wonder Man, so I bleieve we shouldn't give them a vague role in IM2.

Mmm, was thinking. I reckon it's safe to say that we'll have a different threat than Ultron to be the climatic end of Phase II? Granted, I suppose we could come up with our own pitch that would do Ultron justice.

Oh, the Masters of Evil are for Phase 2? So we're still sticking with Loki for the villain of Phase I then? I don't mind that then. Hmm it's a bit close that 'Thor: God of Thunder' by Aaaron ran from 2012-2014. Because I would like to see us build towards that a bit because it introduced Old King Loki, a vital character in Loki's growth from being the God of Lies to the God of Stories. Obviously we can't hint towards the character since while Matthias may be cursed with the transcendent hivemind that is SV, he can't foresee the future. The most we can do to build up to something that hasn't happen yet is set a coincidental theme. Such as one of the biggest concepts in Comic Loki character growth in the OTL.

"What is a 'Lie'?"

To quote from 'Loki: Agent of Asgard' since it answers this question. (Great series, I recommend it) "Lies. Lies told by firelight, to take away fear."

February 2010

Script Quality #1 =
98

It is a testament to Justin Theroux ability that he managed to write such an amazing script in just one take after all the additions and reworking done. You'd had your doubt (who doesn't at some point) but he managed to integrate the Maggia and Madame Masque into the story seamlessly, by making her a foil for Mockingbird their stories have been enhanced, almost making it a Side-plot of the entire movie. It actually feels that something would be lost if she wasn't there at all now.

But the main draw will always be the confrontation between Vanko and Stark, and it's a thing of beauty. Both having to live up to the legacies of their fathers, yet Stark choosing to reject his and overcome the dark past to confront Vanko is something else. It all fits with his previous desire to tackle all things alone, yet accepting help at the final fight, finally unburdening himself.

And the romance...you've never been one for romance in comics, even if you appreciated the growing relationships in them, but you have to admit the scenes when Tony and Pepper are together...oh boy, they hit hard and they hit fast. It almost makes you sad not to see this kind of relationship in the comics. They could have been great together!

Appeal = 58
Finance = 79

You'd have thought that based on the last movie there would be a wide appeal within the Committee, yet though it was approved it was still somewhat below expectations. From what your friends in Marvel managed to parse out, it seems there was some debate as to whether Madame Masque would be fitting to represent the Maggia in the movie. However after breaking the deadlock on whether Mockingbird could appear they decided to just give way.

The budget does not disappoint however. They know very well the cost of making a movie that relies heavily on VFX...and the difficulties you've had lately with it. Hopefully those bloody idiots will get their heads out of their asses this time!

Casting Quality = 107

Everyone loves Marvel nowadays! Or at least they love Iron Man. They know how much the previous movie did and know how it launched names like Robert Downey Jr. and Jessica Chastain into mainstream thought. Of course they want to ride the popularity wave as well.

Do not vote until this post is one hour old. This will give time for additional casting suggestions. Casting suggestions are appreciated.

Casting Barbara 'Bobbi' Morse:
Your future Avenger, Bobbi Morse is an accomplished Doctor in Biology, as well as a trained Hand to Hand specialist and an accomplished Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. She will be facing Madame Masque as she attempt to sabotage and take advantage of Ivan Vanko's grudge against Stark.
[] [Bobbi] Emily Blunt - Blunt is contractually obligated to appear in a movie of Twentieth Century Fox's choosing, which means you'll have to negotiate with them to make sure she can show up in this as well as Gulliver's Travels. If you can get her though she seems more or less a perfect choice for the part. (Hard Negotiation Roll)

[] [Bobbi] Amanda Seyfried – She does bring out a vibe of "girl needing protection" more than "kickass agent" but Seyfried has recognition that can bring in the fans, not to mention that she has the talent, and the willingness, to take on the role.

[] [Bobbi] Angelina Jolie - Jolie is obviously a well-known and award-winning actress, but you do have some concerns about her being too recognizable. Someone like her could overshadow the character easily. She's also on the older side of the actresses you're considering though given that she's thirty-four that's hardly a concern.

[] [Bobbi] Margot Robbie – Of all the actresses who auditioned no one is greener than Margot. She has just recently come to Hollywood just to audition for the film, recognizing the opportunity (and how similar she looks to the character). She has the talent though, and you have taken chances before.

[] [Bobbi] Adrianne Palicki – No stranger to playing Superheroes as she played the role of "Kara" in the hit CW series Smallville. Adrianne is no stranger to the big screen, though most of her success has been in TV shows. Still, you might give her a shot.

[] [Bobbi] Kate Hudson – Alright, they were not lying; Kate can light up a room with her sheer charisma alone! You're not sure how well she'll do though as she's mostly performed in romantic comedies, but her work ethic alone would convince you she can be ready on time.

[] [Bobbi] Scarlett Johansson - Another big name who seems very interested in the part. You didn't think she would ever be in Marvel though it seems she can recognize the way the wind's blowing. She's certainly got enough star power to justify giving her the role outright.

[] [Bobbi] I'm thinking of Someone Else: (Write In)

Casting Ivan Vanko: The son of disgraced scientist Anton Vanko, Ivan has a deep seated grudge against Tony's family due to his father's betrayal of Vanko's. You want an actor that can keep up with Tony, give a sense of seriousness and gravitas, yet also remains sympathetic to the audience (at least until the final battle).
[] [Vanko] Sean Penn – On all accounts he is perfect for this role, his emotional portrayal of Vanko could make everyone hate and feel sorry for him. The main issue here is budget, as in how much it would cost to have him in the movie. (Negotiation Roll)

[] [Vanko] Mickey Rourke – With a soft voice and a muscular Physique, Mickey brings intensity to the role. Jon would certainly prefer him for the part, the fact that he can be recognizable enough without it overpowering the character itself.

[] [Vanko] John Hennigan – Wrestlers always seem to want to branch out to movies. He's been at it since the 2000's, and he has the enthusiasm for the role, though perhaps it's a bit too hammy.

[] [Vanko] Mads Mikkelsen – He's no stranger to the big screen, he's even appeared in a Bond film, but you're concerned he might not have enough recognition. Aside from that his mostly calm visage and deep voice leave enough of an impression to consider him.

[] [Vanko] Channing Tatum – He was promised a role as Gambit on a future X-Men movie, yet no announcement has been made. He's decided to go for Marvel now that he's finished his latest role in G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra. From hero to villain might be a big change but he's up to the challenge.

[] [Vanko] Johnny Depp – Oh my God, Really!? He's even willing to delay filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film for this! You don't think Disney is going to be happy here, but who cares?!...Perhaps the Committee will. (Hard Negotiation Roll)

[] [Vanko] Michael Madsen – Michael is usually seen in Tarantino films and he does have the look of a true villain. He's also played more caring roles in the past, and could more than likely make Vanko likeable.

[] [Vanko] I'm Thinking of Someone Else: (Write In)

Casting Whitney Frost/Madame Masque: Going with the name she's used in business circles. Ideally you'd have to see some chemistry with Tony, Justin and Bobbi, especially in their fighting scenes. You're confident that you can find someone given that you've shaken hands with practically every actress in Hollywood since this casting call began.
[] [Masque] Élodie Yung - A young actress looking for her big break is this half-French half-Cambodian. Yung is not only an attractive woman with acting experience; she's also a black belt who has been doing karate since she was nine years old.

[] [Masque] Emilia Clarke – Well, you have casted green actors before, but Emilia has them beat by a mile now. Her debut was just a year ago, and she has yet to make any waves, but something about her just tells you she will matter in the future. She might look a bit young though.

[] [Masque] Marion Cotillard - As an award winning actress who has been appearing in English-speaking roles since the early 1990s but still has a clear foreignness to her, Marion is one of the big names you're strongly considering to play Madame Masque.

[] [Masque] Eva Green – Eva is a rising star in the business ever since her appearance as Vesper Lynd in Quantum of Solace. She's also beautiful, extremely versatile in all her roles, and seems to like the material.

[] [Masque] Anne Hathaway - Anne is undeniably a huge win for marvel if you cast her. She's young but a superstar since The Devil Wears Prada three years ago. Hathaway is very good though even if she might be too big a name.

[] [Masque] Zoe Kravitz – Though she technically can be considered Jason Momoa's stepdaughter if you squint, you can't deny that she has talent. Both an accomplished singer and actress she brings a certain edge to the character.

[] [Masque] Mila Kunis - Born in Soviet Ukraine, her family moved to the United States when she was a young girl. She's fluent in Russian, a talented actress who's hoping to get a chance in a real high-budget blockbuster film, and certainly gorgeous.

[] [Masque] I'm thinking of Someone Else: (Write In)

Casting Justin Hammer: Last but not least is Justin Hammer. A (Perhaps) former friend to Tony and rival to Stark Industries who the government has turned to in the wake of Stark's withdrawal from manufacturing weapons, Hammer's eccentricity, greed, and insecurity shines a light on Tony's own failings. He's written to be somewhat of a comic relief character so you need someone that can be serious and do comedy as well.
[] [Hammer] Sam Rockwell - Sam Rockwell's Hammer seems like a delightful and somewhat wacky individual who is much closer to Tony's age and more directly envious than he is cutthroat. He is Favreau's top choice for the role.

[] [Hammer] Nicolas Cage – Nicolas certainly brings a great deal of recognition to the movie and his eccentric antics when playing characters would certainly fit this Justin Hammer.

[] [Hammer] Tim Curry – Who doesn't love Tim Curry? This veteran actor gave one of the most hamtasticly evil performances that you've seen, and you are more than sure there is even more that he can bring.

[] [Hammer] Jason Bateman – Jason is not as wacky as Rockwell, or as eccentric as Cage, but he does have his own dry wit and more centered style of humor that makes him stand out from the others.

[] [Hammer] Neil Patrick Harris – From the very beginning of How I Met Your Mother Neil has shown a truly charming, ruthless, and shameless kind of man who cares only about himself…and yet you can't help but love him anyways.

[] [Hammer] I'm Thinking of Someone Else: (Write In)

Before anything else I just want to say;

[] [Bobbi] Scarlett Johansson

I find this incredibly amusing. She's be playing a different character yet be playing the same role as OT iron man 2.

Edit: And if we go for her she would also still have heavy interaction with Hawkeye. We have to, it's too funny on a meta level to not.
