You gave Stahelski and Leitch as much support as you could, you made sure to clear any small issues that may crop up, and you even made sure to help them find the best teams that would work with the limited amount of budget that Marvel was willing to cough up for this adventure into producing a film about a powerless superhero.
You could have saved yourself the effort as they seemed to have the situation well in hand.
Production went swimmingly, finishing just before the holidays, with barely any effort. It seems that all those years working with other Directors actually helped them learn the do's and don'ts in theory. Putting it into practice may have been a bit rough, but they managed to handle it well enough.
It was the VFX (
BLOODY VFX!!!) which once more manages to nearly screw up the pooch. It was a good thng that this movie didn't really nearly as much as te other three you've done on it, but you still need it to be a bit better than what you were given. As it is, the weapons of both
Swordsman and
Silent just doesn't hold up. Seriously, you were laughing out loud seeing Jean Reno trying to fight with what looked like a very badly renditioned pipe.
He wasn't laughing that much though.
The highspot however has to be the choreography and stuntwork. Chad has outdone himself, you swear you haven't seen so many brutal yet beautifully choreographed fights as here. The entire movie is fight after fight with action everywhere that in now way arms the mystery and Spy Games going around.
The sounds were acceptable, even if the music felt a bit generic and not that memorable, and at least the editing wasn't completely jarring, so all in all, you'd say that for all this being their first Directed movie, they did a pretty good job.
..If only it
wasn't for that bloody VFX team!!!
Protagonists
Karl Urban Screen Presence: 80
Karl Urban was a man with something to prove. Neither you nor Chad and David had made it a secret that you'd hoped for Jensen Ackles to take the role, and in the en he had to be second best. From there he made it his mission to prove that he was not Jensen's replacement, but the true and logical choice for the role. And in that he very well succeeded.
His Hawkeye is, to put it in simple terms, amazing. He's made sure to, if not do his own stunts, at least do most of them. He's trained himself to the point that he can be well and ready for nearly all scenes, being the first to arrive and the last leaving. it's more than clear that he wants to prove that he can be as good, if not better, than the competition.
This mimics in some ways his rendition of Hawkeye; A man with pride driving him, who fears no one and constantly butts heads with authority. He has the talent, he has the drive, but lacks the spirit of teamwork and the heroic nature that would push him into becoming one of the World's Mightiest Heroes. In a way this is his origin story, cleverly hidden within a Spy story.
Not bad at all.
Samuel L. Jackson Screen Presence: 104
Samuel L. Jackson had nearly made it a condition to be cast as Nick Fury in exchange for using his image in the Ultimate Comics, so of course he would jump at the chance to have a larger role than just a single Cameo in the Iron Man movie.
Even so it surprised you to see how much the role truly fit him. You could not see the full Fury in Iron Man, and he was determined to make up for it here. He comes out as a badass, one that knows and sees everything, who can easily whip your ass 7 ways from Sunday if you only give him the excuse, and a terrifying man to have as your enemy. His dedication to S.H.I.E.L.D. and protecting humanity coming second to none.
Protagonist Chemistry: 50
Their interactions is nothing to brag about, but at the same time it's not something that can be called terrible. It's average if you have to call it in some way. Yo can even see what they're going for her, like the interactions between a police commissioner with the loose cannon cops that were the rage back in the 80's. Only played seriously and with actual stakes this time.
Antagonists
Jean Reno Screen Presence: 75
Jean Reno's take as Jacques Duquesne went above expectations. With experiences in playing the villain in several occasions he could easily play the part of the arrogant, prideful, yet also skilled former agent. The fact that Yayan was around to give some aid also helped, he man suggesting some movements and techniques which would look impressive on screen and need hardly much effort.
In the end, Jacques Duquesne comes as a veteran of a hundred battles, one that has seen it all and is still there to tell the tale.
Yayan Ruhian Screen Presence: 91
When you hired him you expected him to be on a few scenes aside from the climactic middle fight, yet he has managed so much in so little time that there is already a petition to keep him free to appear later on. Of all the obscure character marvel owns, no one would have thought that the mercenary ho died on his first appearance would become a favorite.
It's easy to see, the man looks scary when he's not talking, add to that the brutal way he fights and you'd be hard pressed not to think of him as a badass.
Gemma Arterton Screen Presence: 56
Oh Gemma…She did her best, bless her heart, yet at the end of the day she comes as someone trying, yet failing, to keep up when it comes to fighting. Yayan tried giving some counsel and tips for her fighting scenes, but in the end it's very difficult for her when so far all her acting has not required her to fight as much as this movie.
At least the scenes where she interacts with the other are good, more than good on some. The past relationship that she had with Clint is noticeable in their familiarity, and their banter can be so easily misconstrued if you look at it at a right angle.
Antagonist Chemistry: 51
At least the dynamic is decent if nothing else. The scenes between Jacques and Natasha have gained an almost hostile tone which plays well to their eventual falling out. Silent still remains without speaking, but can emote with the best of them, and when the interaction between Jacques and Clint has enough emotion so as to convince the movie goers that they were close once.
In between the Production and Post-Production you'd girded yourself and prepared for what you were sure was going to be the fight of a lifetime. It had been just a few months when Favreau had convinced you to use what influence you had to convince both the Committee and Ike that using Mockingbird in the future Iron man sequel was the right move. You were not confident about your chances, but perhaps using the small leverage you'd gained at Marvel itself could level out the playing field somewhat.
Negotiations Roll: 80
It was a hard battle, between meetings, memos, and even more than ine argument about the need to include an underrated character into what very well may be the flagship franchise of the entire MCU. However, it seemed that things were at a deadlock when your erstwhile allies finally struck.
Jim McCann, writer for Marvel and longtime supporter for the character of Mockingbird (he was the one who had argued for her return during the
Secret Invasion Event) began an entire campaign in Marvel to have her appear in the movies, arguing about the need to include what was essentially "the other half of what made Hawkeye so successful". Perhaps he was aggrandizing a bit, but the language struck a chord with many of the marvel Execs who clearly still remembered the time of the West Coast Avengers and how the conflict between the two of them had been one of the cornerstones of the initial success of the series.
Jim did not let up, at many points mentioning how joining back the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Marvel" together again would certainly invigorate sells of the
New Avengers line, as well as the upcoming
Hawkeye and Mockingbird line in the works.
That seemed to be what decided it all, the idea of increasing sales and profits for the comic books brought them to see reason and give their approval to have Mocking bird join the MCU.
At the time however, all you could think was "
There's going to be a Hawkeye and Mockingbird comic?!"
Barbara 'Bobbi' Morse joins the MCU!
At the end, the executives went through the movie with a comb, making darn sure that the movie would produce what they want. In the end they give it their approval, though they came to you with a request.
So far the character of
Silent is more popular than the Black Widow, and they are not as impressed as Gemma's performance as they have been with Yayan. As such they want you do some reshooting to have them replaced, giving Silent the role of connection and Free Agent, and putting Black Widow as the replaceable ally of Jacques.
Needless to say, you nearly exploded on the spot.
[] [Replacement] Make the changes so that Silent becomes the Free Agent and Natasha the underling of Jacques.
[] [Replacement] Do not make the changes, Black Widow and Silent will remain where they are.
With the decision made, you made sure to check what do for the Post-Credit Scenes.
[] [Mid-Credit] Add a scene of Fury contacting Mockingbird about her next assignment as he reads the Howard Stark file.
