The Perfectly Normal High School: A Slice of Life Quest! (Defunct)

This omake was pretty damn sweet.

but Yumika had just laughed it off, bland hunk of not-food putty that she was
What is up with Yumika in your headcanon? Or at least in the omake version of reality?
I suspect that since she can morph into and act like any individual she wants, she doesn't have a 'core' personality (leaving her unable to experience genuine emotions)... but I can't remember if there is a name for a condition/entity like this.
BIG SISTER: I don't doubt it. I too have a deep connection with SILAS.
Okay, should we get worried about SILAS being spelled in all caps? It's not a name, it's a designation. Like GLaDOS and SkyNET.
DREAM EATER: Why are you telling me this? I still don't want to
DREAM EATER: risk things.
[...]
DREAM EATER: Yumika-chan isn't the sort of person who
DREAM EATER: likes people.
Interesting choices for line breaks there. Narrative pauses inserted in phone chat? :D
DREAM EATER: I dislike you so much.
BIG SISTER: See, I am learning.
These two lines make me want to introduce Big Sister to our girls just to see their dynamics. I especially liked Shinohara's insistence on calling BS a damned robot.
BIG SISTER: I am everywhere. I was ordered to protect you.
Wait, what? Only Silas can give such an order, but who would he try to protect her from? It's not like she is in trouble just for being what she is.
Is that conspiracy stuff? Well, that's terribly invasive if you ask me. Especially when done by a digital relative of a person you have a secret crush on.
Shinohara felt that Big Sister was a helicopter parent of the worst kind. But she also felt that Big Sister was trying to be kind.
...and you can just tell that kindness was never programmed into her. She is making that effort all on her own.
Strangely, that may be the most endearing part of the omake for me. Coupled with her parting words.
Goddamit, Big Sis, why do you have to be so lovable!?

Amazing omake!

I think that as far as cannon goes, I think we have seen Yumika implying that Shinohara can feed off of her at one point. Hopefully that means she can experience emotions.

I put extra effort into it to try to spawn conversation in the thread. The longer this thread gets, the more likely people who would otherwise be on the fence are to give the story a shot and become readers, because it seems more popular and thus less likely to be totally cringe-worthy.

Also it would inflate LuciD's ego and possibly get him in here to call me out on things I got wrong thus further informing us about the world so we can PLOT! Which is the most fun activity after "Playing Dwarf Fortress the third time".

I was trying to be vague, but yeah, for the purposes of the omake, I assumed Yumika's power is basically to perfectly shift personalities. She doesn't just put on Evil Yumika, she becomes Evil Yumika. She, in fact, is masks all the way down, with no real core to speak of. It's not that she's emotionless so much as that her emotions don't have a regular source, so they come out as clay to Shinohara's senses. Shinohara can eat, because the emotions are there and real, but they don't taste right to her because they're "sourced" wrong.

When I say masks all the way down, too, I mean it. My impression is that Yumika is 100% acting. No core personality, no little man in the center, no hollow heart - it's all masks, laying and shifting and moving on top of one another. None of it more fake or more real than the others. Kind of like a hivemind, except one person. That's the sort of Mystery I came up with for Yumika.

In reality she's probably just a succubus or something, which would be interesting in itself, but I have fun theorizing and got a bit out of control when throwing shit together.

Big Sister really, really likes Silas!

Texting conversations are a bugger, because it's hard to make those small pauses really pop without calling them out in the text. and those go a long way to show someone struggling to come up with the words to say something, or being indecisive, or trying to invent a lie to avoid the truth, and such.

I also add those sort of line breaks myself in texts IRL. I make up for being terrible by avoiding txtspeak though. :V

These two lines make me want to introduce Big Sister to our girls just to see their dynamics. I especially liked Shinohara's insistence on calling BS a damned robot.
I fully support letting the Conspirators know about BS, that's why I initially wanted to hold the meeting in our apartment, where it's safe for her to show herself. I suppose this is a decent chance to vet Hana and Yumika for ties to undesirable groups like the Chaos Insurgency or CotBG.

Last thing we need is for Hana to actually be obsessed with converting all life to machine form and so she actually tries to kidnap Big Sis and do creepy stuff to her. Honestly Yumika being Chaos in that case would be the more minor issue.

Wait, what? Only Silas can give such an order, but who would he try to protect her from? It's not like she is in trouble just for being what she is.
Is that conspiracy stuff? Well, that's terribly invasive if you ask me. Especially when done by a digital relative of a person you have a secret crush on.
The not-really-canon there is that Silas asked Big Sis to "protect them like she protects him". He's not really fully cognizant of how spooky that is, but BS prefers to just do as he says so while she grumbles she does spy on Yumika and Hana.

...and you can just tell that kindness was never programmed into her. She is making that effort all on her own.
Strangely, that may be the most endearing part of the omake for me. Coupled with her parting words.

Shinohara flipped all the Silas flags but then denied the route, so she started down the Big Sister route by default and now is rethinking her life choices.

And I love the idea of a lovable but fucked in the head robot who's really just a benevolent Skynet. I'm not a SilaSis shipper (I obviously support Emotional Tacos) but that doesn't mean I can't find Big Sis to be fluffy or cute.

I thought that was a nod to the 'Silas is actually a robot control switch for BSNet' theory introduced with the latest update.

Hmm. What Silas flags are there?
Is the Big Sister route the common one, or a Bad Ending?

Also, as an aside, it was nice to see that some of our classmates have actual parents they can talk to, and weren't just born orphans. Honestly, it is hard to remember there are any adults in this story, between Silas' circumstances and their total lack of presence at school. I think Teach Kamasaki only appeared in the story to fall victim to the SC machinations during the movie night, and the closest thing to an adult we have that we actually talk to is Allen's brother, who himself is a recent school graduate.

I know they are far from being the focus of this story, but it's good to have a reminder that most kids do have someone to turn to besides their school friends.

It's doubly interesting in case of a known SCP like Shinohara having a normal (as far as we can see) family who know about her condition. Makes you ask a lot of questions - since when do they know; how do they deal with it; does it affects their lives any; do they hide it; do they know about other families; why did they choose the Yamaha school to send their kids to, etc. I liked Hana's mom casually asking her if she ate something she wasn't supposed to. It's pretty funny to imagine half the city giving paranormal advice to their kids as they send them off to school in the morning... everyone thinking that only they are exceptional. :D

Of course, if you start thinking about it, any theory trying to imagine the everyday lives of human SCPs would fall apart without a good dose of anime logic to hold it together.

Silas has one flag: Be a female who isn't turned off by nerds. :p

And the Big Sister thing differs depending on how much you like Big Sister in every moment of your day, watching you sleep. Watching you eat.

Shinohara's not too weird of an SCP though. She's not got any weird disfigurements or obvious twitches or tells that something's off; When she's not feeding, she's just a perfectly normal shy schoolgirl with a secret fetish for horror movies. And given Silas has seen her eat in canon, she can probably eat quietly even with people around and not have anyone notice, if she's careful. I imagine she normally just nibbles on her lonesome though, to avoid the worst case scenario.

I don't think it needs much anime logic for her to live a normal life - she's basically a vampire, except without the painfully obvious sucking of blood part, so she should be able to blend in really well. Silas just so happened to roll a crit and come upon her in the middle of a feeding session, when she thought she was alone and when one of her friends was in danger if she stopped, so she really had no choice but to let him see. That's part of why I wanted to make absolutely sure Yumika knows about Hana's Mystery, alongside possibly prodding Yumika to tell us her Mystery as well. Hana seems like she's got her Mystery quite well under wraps, like Chii-kun.

Speaking of, we need to get a measure of how related The Observer is to the Foundation. If he's in deep with the Council, like it seems, he's not likely to be an ally if we end up at odds with them. Which, given we're now besties with a SCP, is probably going to happen sooner or later. If he's not, then maybe he could be a liason towards them from us. In either case, he's real interested in his PEACE, so I don't expect we'll be friends much longer since we're probably going to blow that to the moon once we roll a crit-fail and set off all the fireworks. :/

Sorry, m8, but we can't keep the school stable and get Silas a cute SCP girlfriend at the same time.

I rather hope it's not that. Being nothing but masks sounds uncomfortably close to Quirrelmort from HPMOR. The main difference I can think of then is that Yumika seems to enjoy being 'good,' while Quirrelmort found it boring.

Quirrelmort was just a sociopath though. His core wasn't actually masks, he was just a hollow ball of them.

What I'm saying is that Yumika is all those masks. There's no hollow in her heart, and she feels real emotions.

She could, they tasted like clay.

Which, if you've never been 4 before, tastes like shit. So Shinohara avoids eating Yumika's emotions, because they all taste the same variety of "bad".

These kinds of psychology tricks usually work better if you don't explicitly tell me you're trying a psychology trick on me as you do it...:p:p

I'll have you know I'm a professionally trained interrogator for the U.S. Military and a proven psychic AND the FBI AND an investigative journalist! And I will use my investigative journalistic psychic abilities to read your mind and discover your real name.

Your real name.... Starts with a D!

(Shinohara will now always be Lily Zannotto in my mind.)

Unforgettable Night
Hey there.

Sooo... It may be a couple weeks late, but here is my belated birthday present. Like hell I'll be outdone by Karnewarrior and his great Omakes! :p

Named after the updade, the drawing depicts Silas heading home after making his daring escape from the clutches of the Foundation with the help of his ever-vigilant Big Sister.

"Now I don't want to let go..."

That was my favorite line to write for prooobably this whole Quest. Heh...

My face is a marshmellow right now. A red marshmellow. This is so adorable... and awesome...

I wish i deserved this

Thanks so much, @Nevill. I've said something like it before, but I only hope that I'll continue to make stories you will always remember. All of you.

... and @Karnewarrior?

Keep writing omake, please, I know I didn't talk about yours a lot when it came out, but damn, rereading it, you remind me of why I started writing a slice of life Quest in the first place.

Okay this enough marshmellowy goop for now, I have to go and stay up for the rest of the evening because sleep is not coming for me any time soon.

Very nice! I like how Big Sister looks like Wheatley from Portal.

And uh, who's that girl? I don't remember anyone escaping with Silas
don't worry Nanami. We'll get you back here eventually. Just hold on.

Girl, what girl?

The picture clearly portrays both main characters of the quest, and no one else.
(and possibly a random fly-by drone, depending on which Universe you observe the drawing from)

Yea, your right. Wonder what was up with me earlier.
All hail Lady Nanami, destined savior of Silas.
Is anyone even seeing this? It is rather faint and hard to see And that's the whole point.

A lot of people have scripts installed for their browsers that make it impossible to miss invisitext. Others use highlighting, where colors don't matter.
Introducing colors to invisitext mostly just annoys people (i.e. me ), since it breaks the aforementioned scripts without actually making it any more 'secret'.

Sorry about that

Yup. Also, huh, quote function treats that weirdly. Wonder what's up with that.
Quoting themessage keeps it as viewed. Copying the text converts everything to white text,
That might not be what you're asking but thats my answer anyways.

He is using several tags without closing them properly (I think). The right formatting is to write like this:

This text is in red, this one is in green, and this one is in red again.

And not like this:

This text is in red, this one is in green, and this one is in red again.

Since you only used a part of the quote, not all tags were copied correctly, hence the breaking of the invisitext scripts and weird quotes.

This is brilliant. Very definitely way better than my own shitty fanart.

You're getting more popular now. Fanart at page 37 is pretty damn good!

And don't worry, the Omakes won't stop as long as there's at least one update between them. I'm trying to keep the thread from dying between updates, and it helps me keep my writing skills sharp in the meantime (and hopefully attaches my name to some people's minds so that next time I run a quest I can be as popular as LuciD-senpai!), so don't worry about it. I've run a few quests myself and it always helps to have an active thread.
