The Perfectly Normal High School: A Slice of Life Quest! (Defunct)

The impression I got from the update was that she couldn't really get food?
She locked herself up in a containment room - willingly, because she had some dark thoughts, - and is reliant on Maeda to get her food because she is unwilling to steal it. But we've seen her leave the room and wander around the school or even beyond, and she was helping herself to whatever she found at the ill-fated Drama Club party, so it's not like she can't.

She already took advantage of her non-existence this update, so she could do it again. I'd like her to try, anyway.

Honestly, I don't get what is going on with the containment room. It is supposed to make her easier to remember to Maeda, but clearly it isn't working? So why is Nanami even there? Why does she get her food through Maeda? Is it for Nanami's sake, or for Maeda's own, to constantly have something she has to remember?
He could be former personnel wiped by an SCP?
He really does have some sketchy past, what with Big Sister that has always existed to watch over him but not in Nanamiverse, his family dead (for how long?), and him being a hikki for 4 years for reasons unknown.

But then, why does Yumika is affected by at least half of those? Is it a coincidence? Or has the Foundation mistaken the nature of the threat?

Aha! Noticed a thing! Time for additional wild theorizing! From the character-creation options, the third alternative to Nanami & Big Sister:

From this latest post, while Yumika was busy not existing (bolding mine):
This wasn't Computer Club. "Reina-senpai? ...why... I s-swear, Chii-kun, if you're hiding somewhere to s-spook me again, it's not gonna work..."

So, possibilities:
  1. Two characters share the same name for no particular reason (as if! THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES)
  2. Our would-have-been big sister exists as a member of the Computer Club, but her relationship to Silas has been erased or forgotten
  3. Reina does not exist normally but, for some reason, would if Yumika did not
In the interests of determining whether 2 or 3 is accurate (1 being obviously false on account of being altogether too reasonable), we should investigate the Computer Club ASAP, on the IC pretext of seeking to improve our programming literacy for our work on Big Sister's code. She did suggest that as a possible approach, after all, so it wouldn't be unreasonable for Silas to try as long as he can overcome his fear of Hanamura.

Assuming Hanamura doesn't butcher our attempts himself because he's got his face pressed up against the fourth wall.

And while Renji is okay, Shinohara is closer and I feel like dropping that guilt debuff is liable to get us closer even faster. To say nothing of the fact that she, as a SCP, deserves to know about the Foundation too (not that we should tell her in the next update).

There's a lot of debuffs right now, but I feel like if we use the bread there's a reasonable chance for a cascade of positive benefits.

I have all kinds of weird hypotheses. If we assume that all three starting options co-exist simultaneously, it means that Silas always has some kind of guardian figure around to take care of him. Nanami, Big Sis Skynet, or Big Sis Reina.

I can't see why Yumika's existence would have affected Reina's, and we know Nanami's doesn't. So what happened there in the last update? The most plausible explanation is that the Drama Club wouldn't have existed without Yumika, and that Silas would default to the Computer Club were it not for her. So I am going to assume Reina is indeed a living person our current Silas hasn't met yet, and she is to the Computer Club what teach Kamasaki - or perhaps Yumika herself - is to the Drama Club.

But if she exists - why didn't she take custody of us as the elder sibling? Yumika's disappearance made Silas aware of her, but if she were his sister, wouldn't he have called her Reina-Nee, instead of Reina-sempai?

Which to me suggests she is not actually our sister. Which then means that Silas in the 1st option - who thinks that she 'has been around since forever' - would have been brainwashed to think of her as such. The only entities capable of altering a person's memory to such an extent would be either antimemes, or the Foundation. That she could have been installed as our legal guardian if Big Sister didn't beat her to it suggests the latter to me.

...am I getting too paranoid with this? :ninja:

Anyway, votes!
[x] This seems like a horrible idea.
Not today. But surely, some day...

[x] [BS] Gently inform Silas that Big Sister needs to focus more of her time trying to learn more about the Student Council, in case they might have anything that might harm him.

I feel like this one is important, and I wanted Silas to be eventually self-dependent. Let's see how the boy handles it. In the meantime, let's make a use of our Loner trait while we still have it.

If she doesn't go about her own business, I will probably vote in Reizei and Shinohara, and bribe them with tasty treats.

@LuciDreamer, the latest update is not threadmarked.

Big Sister does care about other humans. Interesting.
Shinohara appears to have successfully partaken of something other than fear. Good for her.
The Foundation... well, there are some confirmations of what we suspected already. Apparently there was a period of time when there was no new SCP objects.
"Checking for bugs. Checking for bugs?! Oh. My. Gawd. That is rich!"
Well, screw you too, meta-aware Hanamura entity. In fact,
[х] Think: "Well, screw you too, meta-aware Hanamura entity".

Jokes aside, I think it's an approach to take. He apparently can read our votes, but probably not posts (he wasn't aware what we were planning for movie night, but was aware of the bugs vote). What do you think?
[ ] [+] Hello, Hanamura. We both can make life difficult for one another, as you yourself noted. Would you like to cooperate instead? State what you value, and we shall figure out our seams of common cause.
It's also the reason why this asshole took another three days to get the gods-damned update done. I HAVE A LIFE TOO, YOU KNOW *shakes fist angrily*
Meta!Hanamura and Fictional!DreamerLuci both speak in red bold letters, now that I think about it. That's definitely not ominous.
Yumika now knows about the Foundation. What she does with this information is entirely out of Silas's control.
Hm. I was aiming for more close cooperation — e. g., agreeing on daily/weekly meetings to compare notes about our respective investigations, discuss what to do next — but I suppose that works too. Increasing the number of competent people working against the Student Council is a fine goal in itself, and Silas is, contrary to Yumika, a bad actor.
In fact, given that Big Sister seems to sympathize with her, and the new Nanami development... Pushing these three to cooperate with each other would be ideal. Big Sister + Yumika + Nanami is such a fascinating combination, it was very clever of us to set all of this up.
Ahahaha, that's bloody hilarious! We now have a rogue Nanami running around, with a hijacked fork of Big Sister! That particular plot of ours has definitely Gone Horribly Right. I can't wait to see the chaos ahead!
Guys I swear next turn will be so much shorter I'm so sorry
I don't understand why you think this is a problem. Long updates are fantastic.

In any case, vote. I happily engaged in some cannibalism.
Rationale: If we're continuing to be paranoid, we're going to auto-fail the friendship quest, so we need to make Shinohara a friend ASAP. If we have Big Sister not monitor Silas, we mustn't take any risks, though, and Observing Maeda is a risk. Remember how that gone last time?

I kinda have this vision of Silas and Yumika working on one side supposedly against the Foundation, while Maeda is working on helping Nanami on the side of the Foundation, and eventually meeting each other in the middle. Hmmm...
... Damnation, you're absolutely right. I think it would be shooting ourselves in the foot, building a BS-Y-N anti-Foundation group is the better approach, but your idea would be fascinating from the storytelling perspective... Can you provide more arguments?

Hm, I'm not sure. That implies one of our initial options of a guardian was essentially a trap, which is... possible, I suppose. Another possibility is that there's some alternate-timeline shenanigans going on.

Not a trap. At least, not any more than a yandere AI with access to nukes doting on us.

There is nothing to prevent her from genuinely caring for a guy who lost his parents / underwent some kind of traumatic experience that shut him indoors for 4 years, and working on his rehabilitation. You seem to think of the Foundation as something inherently antagonistic. It would have meant we'd have the perspective of the other side, perhaps? Working on Nanami's problem from a different angle?

Can you provide more arguments?
Of what kind? It is clear that the Foundation is not entirely hostile towards us. Maeda wants to unite Silas and Nanami. Ichiro has recognized us and let us go after we escaped from his underlings. But the organisation as a whole is something we need to avoid.

Yumika and Maeda are both Nanami's close friends. Yet their perspectives are entirely different. Yumika can't forgive the Student Council for what they have done to the Drama Club, and may have been infected with an NSCP dangerous to them, which necessitates her possible, ah, decontamination. Naturally, that the group is after brainwashing her does not endear her to them. Maeda tries to do right by everyone as far as the rules of her organisation allow... the same organisation to which Silas and Yumika now present an existential threat.

Maeda and Yumika are on the different sides of the divide, and they are on a collision path. And in the middle of it all there is a story of reunion between the childhood friends waiting to happen, which is what created the reason for the divide in the first place (we resisted the antimeme measures because it would make us forget Nanami, and now we are an NSCP-002 carrier)

If this is to be resolved peacefully - eventually - Nanami should keep her connection in the Foundation, just so that Maeda remembers why she isn't supposed to follow the protocols to the letter and prescribe amnestics until the problem goes away.

I don't know what talking to Yumika would do. It could be a story of plucky SCPs standing up against that which tries to contain them... but it's not like it's the Foundation that is at fault for what happened with Nanami, is it?

Besides, I kinda like the BigSis/LilSis dynamics where they are kept at different sides of the barricade. A big AI mainframe working overtime to hack state-of-the-art defences on the Foundation's servers to find out what is going on... and a simple fork hosted on a smartphone just talking to their representative. The symmetry is just too amusing.

Russian tsundere tank princess. Okay. I feel like she's either the star of a different anime or she's the new arc character that the main characters would face after their high school sensha-do club makes its way into the international stage.

Just wanted to know. If anyone else knows of a better way to apply abstraction to the Character Sheet and the like, please tell me. There are so many formatting things on SV that I'm unaware of... anyway, thanks for reading!
Yeah. You can look at the new tech in something like Avalanche's Battle Harem quest frontpage.

For the briefest moment, Silas saw something strange in Yumika's expression. Something that looked pained - and guilty and sad and awful. But then, like a curtain drawing closed, she caught her breath, hiding her eyes behind her wrists as she moved preemptively to wipe away a few tears. "Hah… Hey… it's a pick-me-up speech! Usually I'm on the other side of those. It feels so weird to b-be on the receiving end of one… hah…"
*wince* Well, everyone does need someone of their own.

"Aaaand there! You made me feel good, I made you feel good. It's a win-win!" she giggled.
*raises finger*

*lowers finger*

I'll just leave that one right there.

Silas felt like he had just landed from a big fall, with all the fuzziness and disorientation that came with the feeling. "...eh? Chii-kun? Tetsuo-kun?" he looked around; an old, disused television screen sat on the other end of a wide room. It looked like a space for tables and chairs used to be in the middle of this place, though they had all been removed long ago. The lights were noticeable dim here. This wasn't Computer Club. "Reina-senpai? ...why... I s-swear, Chii-kun, if you're hiding somewhere to s-spook me again, it's not gonna work..."
Oh gross, alt2!Silas was actually friends with Hanamura.

Also, finally a Reina.

Yumika blinked. Glancing around, she tried to rationalize why Silas was suddenly ignoring him. Here eyes widened. "...where's Drama Club?"

"Oh god..."

"Nanami-chan?!" Yumika gasped, noticing the girl attached to her chest. "Nanami-chan, what... why doesn't Sai-kun..."
Typos:
her
Her

Also, awwww, that's creepy.

"Woauughh... Sorry!" Silas apologized. "I don't know what came over me! Ignoring you like that." He felt a literal punch to his gut, realizing that he'd accidentally snobbed Yumika. Nanami's tears streaked her face ran past him, accidentally hitting Silas on the side on the way out of the Club room, away, away, far and far away from here...
snubbed

Nanami : (

The two stepped outside, only to nearly trip on Shinohara, who was sitting against the wall, clutching some sort of bakery bag tightly with a comically wide grin on her face. She was speaking incoherently: "C-Conflict! Resolution! Heehee! Conflict-resolution! Coooonflict! Reeeeesoluuuution! It's a seven-course meal of happiness and fluff! Heeheehee..."
Shinohara seems to have finally come to some new enlightenment. Good for her.

(Go Ensemble Darkhorse! I'll have you rise in popularity yet!)

Yumika frowned. "...'Matsuoka...san…' Oh! Sai-kun! Earlier in that conversation. You called me Yumika-chan, didn't you?"

"I… did…? I did!" Silas realized, horrified. "Oh god I'm so sorry I've just listened to everyone else call you that and I thought that - "

"Nonono, Sai-kun, I think it's great!" Yumika laughed. Shinohara followed up with what sounded like a drunken giggle. "Heheh… you know… that reminds me! Sorry that I let everyone give you such a hard time when Hana-san used your first name the first day you came. That… uh… that's been grating on me for a while. No hard feelings, yeah?"
If that's not a relationship upgrade, I'll eat my hat.

Eventually, as the sound of Yumika's struggling died down behind him, Silas start to feel a pretty warm feeling bubbling up in his chest. That… Silas thought to himself. That… that felt pretty good.

The CHAR cap has changed by +0.5!
The COUR cap has changed by +0.5!
Yumika's REL has increased!
Oooooh, shiny cap increase.

"It seems this was a gesture of genuine goodwill, at least by the Yuuko girl," the drone affirmed through Big Sister's voice. "The only anomaly I can detect is a higher than average concentration of glucose. I'll be off, then. My cameras will be able to monitor you perfectly fine without me having to worry about this bulky vessel interfering in your activities. You're welcome!"

Silas gained Bread (x4)! (Effect: Gift Item. +REL)
...are those gonna go bad?

"AAAHHH!" He let out a high-pitched scream, dropping the small organism to the ground. "S-SPIDER!" he shouted, a bit too loudly. He stomped it with the heel of his foot and then scurried to the other side of his observation site.

Big Sister, for her part, quickly had the little insect vaporized by firing a bit of focused laser into the mass of squirmy mandibles struggling on the stone floor. "...bugs neutralized," she said, without a change in tone. Though her avatar was smirking.
*facepalm*

"Haha! Ahaahaahaahaha!" he laughed. "Check for bugs, they said! Check for bugs! Yeah, yeah, I left a bug, for sure! Wahaahaahaaaahaaaa~ Oh… I'm stealing someone's laugh. Oh well. Don't care. WAAHAAHAHAHAAAHAAHAAA~"

"Uh… Chii-kun, it's your turn…?" one of the girls next to him tried to get his attention.

"Checking for bugs. Checking for bugs?! Oh. My. Gawd. That is rich!" Hanamura continued laughing, completely blind to the protestations of his fellow club members. "Bugs! Scary things, they are! Better check, and check often! Look out, we left one lying around! WAHAAHAAAAAA~!"
I swear to god Hanamura I will find a way to get Chihiro.chr deleted, see that I don't.

He felt kind of stalker-y, but… he figured he could return here again sometime if he really wanted to, just to watch people. Since they were interesting! And he definitely only had pure intentions.
Oof. Just as long as you don't bring some binoculars or something up there...

Big Sister was dispassionate. Utterly. Completely. Which was why she, at that moment, so dispassionately sent a fake email to an "Akiko Matsuoka"'s employer, telling them to let the woman go home to her family early that day.
Aw. I'm not the hugest fan of Big Sister but she's not a bad girl I guess.

Silas's bishi avatar stood behind a number of his comrades holding back an agitated crowd of Empire loyalists. One of them fired a warning shot to prevent them from breaking into the Congress building.
missing space

Silas's avatar strode forward. He looked Silas in the eye - ohmygod he was looking him in the eye this cutscene is so cool - , and smiled. "Today, I will be a hero. May the Republic never die!" he pumped his fist into the air, and the light became brighter, brighter…
I can't begin to imagine how many historical facts he's going to mis-memorize because of this.

Oh. I have a question.
"Do you... D-Do you know if Big Sister is real?" she felt horrible, taking advantage of her nonexistence like this, but... she remembered reading from somewhere that there were ways to convince really dumb AIs things that weren't true. It was worth a shot, right?

"...no."

"Um... I'm her, then." Is that how it's supposed to work? she wondered.

"...t-truly?"

"Yeah!" Nanami nodded.
Why did the ploy work? It says that Nanami took advantage of her non-existence, but how? What was the logic behind this exchange?
Keeping in mind that Nanami does not know what Big Sister is, and that their existences are interconnected.

Things are getting interesting. I may not be able to keep up with the... non-normal parts beyond Big Sister, but I can at least suggest activities for socialization.

First, we can try to contact Hanamura, and see if we can stop working at cross purposes. If this works, we'll get a load off our back, possibly make him happier, and maybe even get some other benefit. I've expanded the contact wording so see how well we can contact each other.

Second, on telling Big Sister to break her code is a blatantly bad idea. Its like a Godzilla Threshold in my eyes, since an AI without bindings could be very dangerous. Maybe later, if cornered, but not right now.

Big Sister actions... Choice one, well, its a good idea to get information on the council, and this option only affects Silas, not the world around him. Choice 2 is to let make sure Silas doesn't do anything foolish under his own power while Big Sister is gone (under our suggestion, though, is a different story).

Bread to Drama Club, make amends with Shinohara, and learn more about one of the members.
Also, food for Nanami to make sure she doesn't starve, and see the limits of 'Little Sister'. Who knew it would come in handy like that?
Finally, a side-note: we're going to want to work tomorrow after school. The Forum's Toxicity is heating up. We best swat that down before it gets too bad.

Well, it was your suggestion that perhaps Silas would have been brainwashed into thinking Reina is his sister in that route. I agree that the Foundation isn't our mortal enemy — frankly, I would have preferred if Silas joined them instead of the Drama Club — but that seems a lot less friendly to Silas than any other option.
Oh, and Big Sister isn't actually pure yandere, surprisingly: she did show sympathy for Yumika.

Regarding Nanami's ploy, I'm assuming that Little Sister is currently contaminated with Nanami's antimemetic radiation (as Yumika was), which means Big Sister cannot perceive and contact her. And even if Little Sister tried reaching out to her on her own, Big Sister would likely notice and conceal her presence, assuming that it's the Student Council's security program or something.
As such, Little Sister has no evidence of Big Sister's existence, which... allowed Nanami's trick to work, somehow. I'm not clear on that last part either. Perhaps because Little Sister's definition of Big Sister was empty, she was free to define "Big Sister" however she wanted?

Well, it's something we'll definitely have to use to demolish the city with nuclear weapons, after all of our schemes blow up in our faces and we're forced to immigrate to the Manipinoian Republic.

We specifically have a limited time only Observe Maeda risk mitigation.
It'd only get worse later and the bonus expires soon, while she's integral to too many plots to NOT observe indefinitely
I can't find exact details of this risk mitigation, would it cover -10 to social actions caused by Big Sister's absence? I suppose it wouldn't matter if the [BS] vote to divert her attention to the Foundation's servers doesn't pass, but it's not clearly the case yet.

Sorry, sorry. Would have memories retroactively incorporated. Much better!

Big Sis was unhappy because Yumika stole Silas' heart attention. And became a probable source of a potential mess she'll have to clean, but that sounds like a justification.

That much is confirmed on BigSis' end... I suppose Nanami could have inferred that.

The AI behaves like a baby, accepting whatever is said in absense of verifiable facts. I suppose that is why BigSis disabled Internet access for them.

By the way, you need to have all the votes in one post, or it won't get picked by the tally.
Also, I haven't read all the comments and everything, but was this quest always supposed to have the SCP and non-people stuff in it?
We had our first taste of Nanami/BigSis dilemma as early as the end of Week 1. I don't know how prominent this stuff was supposed to be, but non-people were a part of it since day 1.

I know. It's not a real vote, the "х" is actually a Russian impostor. I just posted it like that for effect after editing my initial vote.

What do you think about trying to talk to Hanamura directly, by the way?

I think that our votes were, to date, always connected to the actions of main characters, and I would rather not decouple them.

I can't say I like the idea of direct interation with the voters, without a middle-man. Just not my cup of tea. Since I don't want it in the story, I don't want to encourage it, but could go along with it if the majority thinks it fits.

I would find it amusing if you tried to incorporate a message to Hanamura in a vote that would also make sense for Silas or Big Sister - seeing how he intercepts it anyway. His reaction to bugs was pretty funny, five facepalms out of five.

Hmm. Interesting idea. Would that do?:
[] However implausible it is, the Foundation apparently escaped from a movie. You remember an anime with a similar premise you watched recently, it wasn't very happy either. Perhaps you could try to find stories in which people use their fictionality to their benefit? They could include ideas you're uniquely situated to apply in practice.

(Silas watched Re:Creators, which is a metafictional anime, and apparently enjoyed it. The secret message a) tests Hanamura's capabilities, b) synergies with the plaintext message to say: "cooperation is useful".)

That was also a result of a roll that was just short of the worst possible roll (High numbers being bad and all I assume rolling a 100 on anything has bad results.) So the question is, if we'd rolled something closer to average, say 75, would we still be dealing with memetic non-people?

So, it looks like Mihoku is a Japan that didn't lose word war 2, and Ambernia is an America that stuck with the first draft of the constitution (since the not-president has approximately no power)?
And Ambernians don't like cheese??? If there's some kind of story behind this, I definitely want to hear it.

[post=PostId]Title[/post]Yumika blinked. Glancing around, she tried to rationalize why Silas was suddenly ignoring him. Here eyes widened. "...where's Drama Club?"

"Oh god..."

"Nanami-chan?!" Yumika gasped, noticing the girl attached to her chest. "Nanami-chan, what... why doesn't Sai-kun..."
No. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
:mob::mob::mob:

"Nanami-chan, what's going on?" Yumika started to panic.

"No...noononononononoo... NO!" Nanami shrieked.

Yumika was suddenly thrust forwards, as Nanami shoved her away. "Wait, Nanami, I want to help - !"
Oh, whaddaya know, Nanami had the same reaction as me. :p

I think Shinohara might have a new favorite food...

The girl sighed. "Okay, Let's skip Chii-kun for now. Roll for initiative, Dorima-sa…"
They're playing DnD! We HAVE to get a joint DnD session with both clubs together at some point!

General criticism:
This update is huge! I think it would be extremely helpful to break future updates up into smaller chunks so that you can update faster and us readers don't have to take quite so long reading each individual update. It would make the thread a lot easier to read and reply to.

Oh. I have a question.
Why did the ploy work? It says that Nanami took advantage of her non-existence, but how? What was the logic behind this exchange?
Keeping in mind that Nanami does not know what Big Sister is, and that their existences are interconnected.
Maybe the ploy worked because... it's not a lie. Maybe Nanami and Big Sister are (aspects of) the same person?

How deep does the rabbit hole go?!

spoiler from update 2764: Maeda, Silas, Big Sister, Nanami, Shinigami!Yumika (not to be confused with Yumika PRIME), and Hamtaro are all actually a gestalt hivemind playing 4-dimensional chess with itself, Dorima is actually God, but doesn't know it, Ichiro is still dying, Allen is a alien plant here to prepare the world for invasion, and the culture festival is tomorrow!

No consensus on what Big Sister should do, and Silas' actions depend on that quite a lot.
Shinohara is in the lead, which might sway me away from paranoia and cracking the Student Council. Her ST is low enough as it is. The things I do for the Best Girl...
Since everyone wants to share bread with the entire Drama Club instead of certain characters (as is intended for the gifts), it makes sense to make Reizei Renji the 2nd Social target, since they are both in Drama with Shinohara, and thus should both benefit from the bonus.
