In the Light of the Emperor I am Free

++Thought for the Day: The Emperor protects.++

His message sent to the people of Avernus, the Last Saint could at least be assured that they would not fall so easily to the vices of the Dark Prince. The Emperor was with them, and from the looks on the helltroopers swarming around the compound, they knew it. How long his blessing would last in the face of such a force he did not know, all Lin knew was that it bought enough time that the initial wave of enemies would strike without its edge.

His aid would help immensely in the fight against the daemonic hordes, his presence raising his troops' morale to fight until death and the unclean burning at his very gaze, but it was a task he could not do, not this time. Avernus had grown strong, grown powerful since the first Chaos invasion by the Sons of War and they can fight this battle themselves. Saint Lin's presence is required elsewhere, to do something only he and Ridcully could do, something they hadn't done since that time thirty-four years ago...

As Saint Lin and Ridcully passed through the adamantium gates barring entry to the hall where the Astropathic Choir lay protected under the aegis of wards layered upon wards, he had for a moment thought it was too late. The sound of a screaming man driven mad hinted that a terrible fate had befallen the last of the Astropaths before the crack of a lasbolt cut through the cacophony and silenced the room once more.

What he saw inside the hall relieved Lin: one of the Astropaths lay dead (a clean, smoking hole through his head), but the three others were alive and holding, at least for now. They were clearly under heavy strain and barely holding onto their sanity, but these are the ones who survived the Emperor's death - the strength of their will would sustain them, at least for a while. With them half the Primaris Telepaths on Avernus were doing their best to protect not only their own minds but that of the Astropaths. Finally, there was Aria, Leader of the Witch Hunters, holstering the laspistol she used to execute the maddened Astropath. By the look of concentration and the lighting flickering about her body, she was engaged in the same task as her fellow Telepaths.

Light surfaced from within, covering his charges to let them know he was here without breaking their concentration. The simple act seemed to help slightly, the tortured wracks of the Astropaths growing a little less frequent. Feeling a psychic probe from his colleague, he opened his mind and linked to his soul just as you did thirty-four years ago when you ventured into the realm of the Abomination. You would not have the months of preparation as you did then, nor would you have the sheer power of Gerald's soul to power yourselves, but neither was necessary. You were not venturing into the territory of an awoken thing with strength enough to challenge the Four.

You feel Ridcully's mind gingerly reach out to three...very reminiscent souls within the room, your
Light reaching out and reassuring them, and finally their minds are linked with yours. You feel a heavy weight that you had only faintly felt prior, malevolent beings clawing at your mind and the minds of those with you, seeking to tear your souls apart. You burn these annoyances away. You have faced far greater trials than this. They will return time and again and you will burn them each time they do. With your soul as an anchor and the Emperor in their hearts, the remaining Astropaths will yet live.

increased effect of Saint Lin, +5% to chance of Astropaths surviving

Are there rolls for regular Avernites, for how many will die due to this? (Looks like about a third of our population is going to die off.)

Will the psyker prevalence on Avernus increase?

Might Avernus end up with a more severe trait than 'Warp-Touched'?

What are the stats of a typical Avernite?

Being a bit hopeful there, but still better than most imperial worlds
Will the psyker prevalence on Avernus increase?
Probably. Depending on how many die first.
Might Avernus end up with a more severe trait than 'Warp-Touched'?
Could it get worse without being permanetly partly in the warp? Even so I think the planet mind keeps the planet at a certain level of warp touched.
What are the stats of a typical Avernite?
Crazy compared to most worlds, most of our people are in the millita and have better stats and gear than Cadian guard troopers and Inquisition Storm Troopers.

More like three quarters and that's being hopeful. There's a base chance of 74% chance of named characters dying, not staying alive. Job modifiers, stats, and omakes help, but it's far from a guarantee.

Henry. He's got Piety 14 and Combat 28, which means he gets a +22 chance of survival. That only takes his chances of survival up to 48%, so he's most likely gonna die.

Tranth. Piety 23 and Combat 36. +39 chance of survival, he has a 35% chance of dying, that's about one in three.

Britton has it worse. Piety 21, Combat 27. +28 chance of survival. 54% chance of survival, a bit better than a coin flip.

Drago. Piety 14, Combat 33. +27 chance of survival. 53% chance of survival, this ancient general that's been with us since the beginning has slightly worse odds than Britton and Syr isn't ready to take his place yet.

Saren. Piety 19, Combat 26. +25 chance of survival. 51% chance of survival, just a bit better than a coin flip. Hopefully the island turtle kills the enemies near him.

Caroline would be pretty much fucked if it weren't for her proximity to Rotbart. Piety 17 and Combat 18. That's a measly +15 chance of survival for a grand total of 41% chance of living.

People we are close to WILL die. There is no getting around that. The only silver lining is that Freya died before this whole mess. She would've been particularly vulnerable considering it's Slaanesh who's invading.

EDIT: Well, it's practically guaranteed that Syr will live, so at least that's something.

the numbers you are quoting are if they are not in a city so there is at least 10% high chance of living then you say
also less of the ordinary population will die then this due to the fact that the named characters are the leaders of Avernus and therefore targeted especially.

A Less Boring Day
Ok, Jane omake.

A Less Boring Day

Deep in The Fens, Chaos psykers struck at eachother, leveling their foul powers against one another.

"Foul wretch! You bow to the wrong master! Bow down and obey the Star Father!" demanded one. She sent a wave of psychic energy at her opponent to ensnare her mind, but she shrugged it off.

"Hahaha! Slaanesh rules this world now. Your powers do nothing! You may have been the stronger of us before, but now I shall be victorious." the second taunted. "Why should I bow down to such a boring god? Embrace the pleasures of the flesh, and you will experience sensations unlike any you've ever felt before. If you do, I'll let you be my personal plaything."

"Never!"

"Then dance for me like a puppet! Amuse me until you break!" said the slave of Slaanesh, starting to utter the forbidden dances of his dark master. The slave of the Star Father attempted to resist, but she was weakening, her own powers waning as the Dark Prince's influence had spread across the world. "Yes! YES! Now you shall-"

Both of their heads exploded as metal spikes from Impaler Sniper Rifles penetrated their skulls. Two kilometers away Jane Oakheart nodded in satisfaction.

"Excellent shots, team. Another successful operation with no casualties. It's quite fortunate our targets where at eachother's throats, but don't expect that to last."

Jane grimaced at the thought. As bored as she'd been, it was preferable to what was happening now. She had no doubt that the number of cultists and Chaos psykers would increase drastically due to this incursion, and millions would die as a result. Slaanesh's influence on Avernus had been very low since the birth of Ynnead and the Chaos God's weakening, but now the foul thing would likely be the dominant threat for years to come.

She got on her vox and contacted the main office of the Fens. "This is Arbitrator Oakheart. You've had two hours to assess the situation, give me a report."

"Ma'am, we've got contact with a few cities through the landlines, but there isn't a complete network. We have no contact with Dis, and we're not certain of how connected the cities we don't have lines to are. The cities we can contact report that they're on high alert, with the Arbites having implemented the contingency plans you put in place for an event like this. There's been a sudden upsurge in cultist activity as expected, but so far they seem to have a handle on it and the military are being contacted to help deal with the worst trouble spots."

Jane nodded in satisfaction. The Adeptus Arbites of Avernus was a well oiled machine. They dealt with more Chaos psykers and cultists on a regular basis than any other human world could expect to. "Good. If the cities we have contact with are already following procedure without prompting, it's probably safe to say that the rest are doing so as well. We'll get through this, people."

They would, and then it would become boring again for a while, but Jane could live with that. Boring just meant things were going right, after all.

So, odds of death:
Rotbart: 29% + Black Crystal Items + Omakes + City + Governor + Bodyguards + Odysseus
Caroline Vergil: 59% + City + Omakes + Personal Assistant
Drago: 47% + Omakes + General
Henry: 52% + Omakes + Admin
Jane: 37% + Omakes + Arbitrator
Saint Lin: 4% + Omakes + Priest
Fabricator Britton: 46% + City + Omakes
Tranth: 35% + City + Omakes
Saren: 49% + Omakes
Ridcully: 27% + Psykers Stuff + City
Xavier: 26% + Psyker Stuff
(Net: ~4 Character deaths from above.)

Regular Avernite: ??? (Looks like, um, 50%.)

Safe:
Syr
Amos Parnell
Fred Haword
Merdith Marue

I'm hoping that the survivors get a good bonus out of this. Maybe our Elite Psykers will go up to Heroic. Maybe we might get something like an 'Heroic-Level Squad'.

city applies to all of them
saint Lin, Headmaster Ridcully, Primaris Xavier and Rotbart all have other factors totally changing it

I read this as it would require more than one roll for each of them to die. Probably several mini-turns for Rotbart.

I think we need some more omakes for Fabricator Britton and Tranth. If either of them go Mechanicus morale will plummet like a comet into Jupiter.

So, how many Avernites should we expect to lose? With less focus on them, city bonuses and Avernite combative strength, (Regular Avernite probably has Combat 16 or so, Piety 12 or so.) I'd say we'd lose ~30% of our people, a similar amount to what we lost when Avernus was first colonized. Would provably be disporportionately focused on our military, though.

As opposed to normally-expected outcome when the world would likely become a daemon world and would have pre-emptive Exterminatus launched on it.

Hey compared to normal that is like unheard of.

Sure it will put us behind a bit, but well... vat can ya do.

Wait. Does Learning apply against Abomination corruption?...

Anyway, my thoughts on a typical Avernite's stats:

M: 10/3d6 (Baseline) + 3 (Experienced Combatant/Avernite/Education) + 2 (Military Training)
I: 10/3d6 (Baseline) + 2 (University Education)
A: 10/3d6 (Baseline) + 2 (University Education)
L: 10/3d6 (Baseline) + 3/4 (University Education)
P: 10/3d6 (Baseline) + 1/2 (University Education)
D: 10/3d6 (Baseline) +2 (University Education) - 1?(Paranoia)
C: 10/3d6 (Baseline) + 4 (Avernite Elder) + 2 (Experienced Combatant) + 1?(Been Wounded) + 1?(Avernite Genes) + ? (Superior Weaponary) + 3 (Military Training)

..Something like this?

(An Avernite who went to University and participated in the militia.)

A Less Boring Day
Gourmand

Swirls of color and force, being and umaking, the Immaterium stretched open. Screams of pleasure and moans of pain accompanied me as I was once again birthed into reality. I looked around and saw the remains of my host and countless others lying in this dark and damp cave.

These foolish Avernians, leaving over a thousand psychics in a single place, without guards, wards, or even defensive cells. This will be the new reign of Tzi'tah as keeper of secrets. I went from body to body, drawing symbols of pleasure, pain, sickness, hate, anger, and a thousand other secrets. The slow steady dripping of brine echoed around the boundless cavern, the smell of salt, seemed odd as i wiped some odd mucus holding them in the walls and onto the floor.

As i ventured further and further I began to notice the humans showing signs of mutation. A claw here, a tentacle there, Tzeench must enjoy fish as much as he did his birds. These weak humans didnt even kill their mutants, but that is fine; Slaneesh loves all.

Cinnamon, cardamom, spices sweet and sickening surrounded me as i began my ritual. First came the horrors, pink and blue, then the daemonettes. The soulfires blazed brightly as i summoned my lessers, never equals. I opened the warp portal even larger, the veil being weak and pliable, oddly more than normal. Echoes of war from the planet brought forth bloodletters, iron hounds, juggernauts and a bloodthirster walked into this world.

Flies flew from portals, plague bringers carried upon a pallaquin of flesh, an immense being, a great unclean one who owed me his very existence. A flurry of raven feathers carried with them 2 changers of ways. It had not been since Horus that we had gathered together, and this planet would be ours.

As the last psychic mutant was sacrificed we prepared to move as one, chaos undivided, there came a whisper, of leather wings gently waving. The far wall melted, and a great green face emerged.

Screams of fear from khornates? No this wasn't right. "Rally and fight! We shall kill this giant squidling and the planet shall be..." I caught a glimpse of its eyes. Dark soulless pits of inky blackness. They drew me forth into them, an infinite abyss, and my mind shattered.

Spicy, sweet, salty and sour. These new foods may have cleared out my larder, but they were so much richer and flavorful. A most excellent midnight snack. I yawned, and went back to sleep, dreaming of such an excellent feast.
