Maybe they're actually friendly... And just REALLY shit at human(ghost?) interaction, and not having greeting committees look like obvious traps.

Seriously, the story seems far too much like a horror setting, and then THIS happens.... So, uhm... I see a second way we can go, where the ladder is broken and covered up with an illusion...Though the friend door looks like it's the door we'd need to go through anyway, with the key symbol on it.
edit: Rescinded vote; I'm honestly not sure. I want to vote genre savvy, but I'm too curious about what's actually behind the door. (It's got that triforce icon on it, which i'm assuming is the way to go since that's what the key looks like.) That, and we've already proven that taking too long can have bad things happen...

I still have a bad feeling about this. Going in through the second floor door might give us a chance to assess whoever this 'friend' is.
If we die to an obvious trap there is a good chance we will waste even more time (because of the time it would take to return to the fortress after we re-spawn, the time delay that seems to happen when we die, etc.).
