I swear I'll update soon... but you have to promise me one thing:

Use the damn armour you're accumulating. I don't care if you melt it down, use it in your next jaeger, whatever. Just stop leaving it lying around in your inventory.

Well there's this new jaeger we plan to build, y'know? And it'll, like, need some armor, y'know?

That's another thing we need to research, bombs. Preferably thermonuclear. Chemical is a good substitute though.

I was thinking trying to research some kind of nuke-like device utilizing our reactors as a starting point for the design.

Some of it at least I think we want to save just in case we need spares and for initial armor for our next Jaeger.

That said, doing something with the older, obsolete stuff probably could stand to be dealt with.

Smelter Aug that melts down old armor to reduce construction costs of SuperHeavies or the Destroyers? Maybe re-armor the Tank with better plating?

Are any of those ideas viable?

Rearmouring the tanks won't do much against K-Scale stuff, but it could work vs. P-Scale stuff. Melter augs are perfectly fine.

I'm with @aledeth on the Smelter Aug.

Going to try to do a Thing later, kind of collate my thoughts on Jaeger Design and the like. Even if it's useless for everyone else it'll get the itch out of my fever-brain. :p

I've mainly just been reading silently, but for what it's worth I like the Trailblazer Yamato design.

I really like the idea of an all-rounder paladin jaeger wielding a gigantic rocket-assisted hammer. Maybe we could design the hammer to have one blunt end, and a claw end for piercing damage?

Better idea: Barbatos' pilebunker-mace
I think I suggested a Pilebunker-Hammer first. :V

Then again my version is inspired by the one Asuka used in Shinji and Warhammer 40K, the one she supercharged with her AT-field and used to pierce and crush not only the Angel but also the tectonic plate she was standing on and make a new volcano in the middle of Germany. Needless to say, I'm not expecting, and most certainly don't want to get one that powerful anytime soon.

It's still a pretty fucking awesome idea though.

Speaking as the pseudo-"designer" of the Jaeger in question, my vision is basically a fusion between the hammers of Reinhardt (from Overwatch) and Uther the Lightbringer (from Warcraft). Basically, a long haft, and the head is large, mostly squared-off, with one end/side able to fold open and deploy the solid-fuel boosters for a one-attack rocket-boosted strike.

As long as we can make it so the hammer's attack roll keys off a stat other than Dex (HtH or STR, maybe a 50/50 split?), I'm down with Hammertime.

Meh. THere's a MUCH BETTER rocket-boosted hammer to expy from. Graf Eisen?
JAWOHL

Which goes into RAKETENFORM

Which can go into Gigant, or, more relevant, Zerstoerungform.

And then there's Graf Eisen's 'little brother' CW-AEC03X "War Hammer"...

Kind of up to @Fyrstorm how it would work. I would assume HtH plays at least some part of the attack stat. I anticipated Dex being only part of the roll. Str would be for the damage.

Not for Paladin Victor. Like, I get it, people love Vita, but I've given a pretty clear verbal picture (and now a couple of actual pictures to composite it into) of what I envision PV's hammer looking like.

You want a drill-spike-hammer weapon, make your own bloody Jaeger design. :p

I'm not opposed to a hammer if said hammer is something its hand/forearm turns into.
Nope. Gonna stand pretty firm on my design choice. You don't have to vote for it! But Paladin Victor uses a weapon held in his hands.
His forearms are busy holding Plasma Casters or some such.

The newly repaired ANGEL-Net transmitter is activated for the first time since who knows when. Its message; a report on the battle against a Category V-- a battle that was won, in no small part thanks to Jagdhund. KRAUN has not yet responded, beyond an automated confirmation that the message has reached its destination.

The Condor squadron is sent out on their near-weekly scouting mission, visiting the area now referred to as Vulcan's Nest. Reports suggest that the entire place is being absorbed by the new ecosystem, with Cat 0 readings showing up rapidly. All the treasurrs previously there are gone, consumed by the toxic jungle. Not the one with the giant bugs, the alien one.

One last push is made on simplifying the jaeger frames. Results are decent, if not particularly dramatic. Despite the focus on Mark IIIs, the frame is simply too complex to reduce much further.

Mk. I frames cost 33 000
Mk. III frames cost 67 000

The micro-Breaches are brought back up again, prompting the Breach Team to try again. And, thanks to the new Supercell technology, they think they could manage something.

Breach Research Facility gains a +1 Bonus!

The MPFs start up this week, churning out trucks, helis, and shiny new aeroplanes.

Condors, Hellhounds, and FRS constructed!

Undeterred by their failure last time, Kaiju Science continues to work on preserving kaiju brains. While they can't preserve the main brain, they eventually devise a method to save the smaller secondary brain and some of the larger nerves. It's pretty expensive, but the results should satisfy the council.

Kaiju Secondary Brains may be preserved! Choosing to preserve a brain will reduce the value of the kill!

One new thing of interest to the council is the appearance of plasma weaponry among kaiju. Due to this worrying development, they've set J-Tech towards the development of Neo-Seattle's own plasma weapons. Fortunately, it doesn't take long to scrounge up an old plasmacaster design from the Mark III Glory Days: the I-19, immortalized by its most famous user-- Gipsy Danger.

New Jaeger Weapon Available: I-19 Plasmacaster!
I-19 Plasmacaster
Costs 1500 Resources
Built-in Ranged Weapon
Attack Dice: 1d10-1/2x 1d10-1/3x 1d10-1
Damage Type: Burst/Electric
Damage Bonus: 1d5
Armour Penetration: 5/3/0
Range: 1/2/3
Overcharge: Set damage bonus to 5. After the shot is resolved, instead of rolling overheat, roll as many attack dice as your rolled+1 on the misfire table, ignoring Jam results. For each subsequent overheat in each battle roll an extra dice.
Overheat: After firing, roll as many d10s as you did attack dice, subtracting as many shots as you made from the final score. If any results are equal or less than 0, roll on the misfire table, adding +1 for each die scoring under 0 and for each point under 0. Ignore jam results.
Requires Tier 3+ Reactor to fit and fire.

The communication network is finally set up between Neo-Seattle and Medford, massive radio dishes being constructed all along the route.

Comms to 6! Network established!

New patches are brought in to the upgrading facilities. This should allow for considerably more rapid prototyping than before.

18 Rolls may be bought in one action!

Research is done into speeding up the process by which Jagdhund's spinal clamps can function. The solution is simple, patching up the software and improving the servo design.

Jagdhund may put away or draw a weapon as a Free Action as long as she is not in melee!

A forray into research of the Barrier Shields produced by Crank goes nowhere. Instead of a report, the council recieves an invitation to "come down and watch some Evangelion". The scientists claim AT Field shenanigans, and apparently have decided to marathon the entire series.

Massive amounts of superalloy armour are churned out by the industrial sector, as the jaegers are almost completely stripped of their old armour. Jagdhund's arm receives its scheduled reconstruction, as both mechs are equipped with their new plating.

Armour equipped!
Armour equipped! Jagdhund is fully repaired!

Well, that's done.

Also, it says built in but doesn't specify where it can be put.

KnightDisciple's The Spirit of the Jaeger
The Spirit Of The Jaeger
A Study On The Origins, Designs, And Design Philosophy Of Jaegers

This "essay" is an attempt to examine, in essence, what "makes" a Jaeger, as well as why Jaegers might all have a certain design philosophy and level of capability inherent to their design, despite being an incredibly diverse set of machines.

Firstly, we should examine the original intent behind making Jaegers the size and shape they were made. Obviously, the 100% meta-reason was "because Guiellermo del Toro thinks Giant Robots Versus Giant Monsters is AWESOME".
But beyond that, the general reasoning behind "why a giant robot" is, in the director's own words, to "react to and grapple with the Kaiju". Jaegers are hunters, and this means they often operate solo. They are the first and last line of defense for any particular city against a Kaiju attacking said city. These incredible machines are meant to stop the Kaiju in their tracks, hold the line, and kill the beasts before anyone else is at risk. No matter the cost.

Second, we can examine the designs seen in the film, comic, and otherwise offficial material. This gives us something of a "baseline" to examine Jaegers from both this Quest (Tacit Ronin vs. the World), and all other Quests (which are the spiritual forefathers of TRvTW).
Jaegers seen mostly or entirely in comics, promotional material, flashbacks, or otherwise not getting notable screen time and/or on-screen action are: Brawler Yukon, Romeo Blue, Horizon Brave, Tacit Ronin, and Coyote Tango. Between very brief on-screen flashes of some (or in the case of BY, the comic), and things like the infobook, we can glean general knowledge of how these Jaegers likely fight.
Jaegers seen fully engaged in a fight on-screen are: Gipsy Danger, Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka.

I don't fee it's too much of a stretch to put forth that all of these Jaegers have at least moderate close combat capabilities. Even Coyote Tango's overall shape suggests a Jaeger that's capable of a fight close-up, and considering how close it was to Onibaba, it's questionable whether it actually ever used the large cannons on its back. Even if it did, I would propose it still did a lot of grappling and punching. Melee attacks and holding onto Kaiju are a basic part of the philosophy behind Jaegers. How good any one Jaeger is at a particular area of close-quarters combat varies, but all of them are capable of it.

Third, we can look at the previous Quests before Tacit Ronin versus The World.
First, we have the Original, Cherno Alpha versus The World. This Quest ultimately had 2 Jaegers under player control: Cherno Alpha and Cossack Delta.
Crimson Typhoon versus The World had the title Jaeger in its arsenal.
Horizon Brave versus The World had Horizon Brave, Bushmaster Regent, Terminal Sanction, and Tacit Ronin.
Gipsy Danger versus The World had the title Jaeger.
Striker Eureka versus The World had the title Jaeger.
Romeo Blue versus The World had the title Jaeger.
Verde Morous versus The World had the title Jaeger.
Tacit Ronin versus The World has Tacit Ronin and Jagdhund.

In all of these Quests, one thing held true: Jaegers always had at least some ability to engage in melee combat. Some used greater amounts of ranged combat; Verde Morous had in-built ranged weapons and a couple of carried ranged weapons, and Bushmaster Regent had several carried ranged weapons. Terminal Sanction was the closest to a "ranged Jaeger" that's ever been seen, but even it ultimately had 2 Railguns and a Plasma Caster (which is treated as an extremely close-ranged weapon, similar to Cherno's Fuel Purge, Horizon's Cryo Cannons, etc.), and had a fairly beefy combat gauntlet on one arm.
Certainly the mechanical system used in the Versus The World Quests allows for use of weapons with a range farther than "you need a breath mint".
However, I feel it is entirely reasonable to say that the intent and spirit of not only VTW Quests, but Pacific Rim itself, is for Jaegers to always be decent to strong in melee combat. Fundamentally, Ranged Combat, for Jaegers, is about softening up Kaiju until the Jaeger can close to finish it. Non-Jaeger forces just act as a force multiplier for this same principle.
Further, any one Jaeger ought to be able to stand on its own, because at any time there might be enough Kaiju to match the Jaegers one-for-one; alternatively, a Kaiju could disable a Jaeger and charge the next one. Even Jaegers who favor using ranged weapons should be capable of solid close-quarters defense. Fisticuffs is never an afterthought for Jaegers.

Let's try an exercise. Let's take Jaegers, and imagine them translated, with as little work as possible, into people.
I'll do the Movie Jaegers (that see action), CAvTW, HBvTW, and then TRvTW. Those are the ones that have had the most screen (or "screen") time, and thus can be most easily personified.
The idea here is a quick word-picture of "what if the Jaeger was a regular-ish-esque human being".

Cherno Alpha: Ivan Drago, but with heavy metal boxing gloves.
Crimson Typhoon: kung-fu master with a couple of weird spinny disk weapons in his hands.
Striker Eureka: Crazy Australian guy who hunts crocs barefoot with a pair of Bowie knives and a shotgun.
Gypsy Danger: Wild West gunslinger with a dueling sword.
Cossack Delta: Skiny Zangief.
Horizon Brave: Karate Mr. Freeze.
Bushmaster Regent: Surly Australian guy with General Grievous arms and a big nasty knife.
Terminal Sanction: The Heavy (from TF2), but with an over-sized sniper rifle.
Tacit Ronin: Ninja with two short swords.
Jagdhund: Operator operating operationally. Also with an axe.

So the question to ask when designing a Jaeger ought to be, "if this was a person what could I sum them up as". At least, that's my thoughts.

So, here in Tacit Ronin versus The World, we're working ourselves up to a third Jaeger, and hopefully a second city. And beyond that, more Jaegers to come (because we are going to take back The World!).
We've had a couple of proposed designs/loadouts.
The whole previous bit of writing was to lead up to saying a few things about the ideas floating around, mine and others, and the good and bad parts about them. I'll just break it down by Jaeger, that's easiest. (I'm using the names that are most strongly associated with some designs, despite some discussions about renaming a few of them.)

Paladin Victor: I won't be able to erase my own bias here, but I do genuinely think PV is a strong contender for our next Jaeger, due to intentionally working to make him at least something of an "all around" Jaeger. As well, the way I've "sectioned" the weapons off (shoulders, forearms, hammer) means it's comparatively easy to start with only some and work our way up to them. Heck, he could start with the hammer, and a missile launcher on one shoulder. It's all good. It's a design that starts simple and has room to grow.
Grey Ghost: We've had visual design ideas thrown out here and here. There's only so much to say, as the basic concept is "shoulder guns plus fairly fast, and some slide-out blades". It's a solid concept, basically a more gun-y Tacit Ronin. An all-around design, which makes it pretty solid.
Trailblazer Yamato: A melee-focused Jaeger, in particular focused on wielding a couple of hand-held blades, with some sort of energy weapon in the chest. Not a bad call, as melee generally is a better idea than ranged with Kaiju, giving a higher chance of hurting them really badly. Still, my gut instincts say considering a secondary weapon system of some sort (smaller cannons, Gatling array, something like that) wouldn't be amiss, and could be tucked into the overall design pretty well. A good "second Jaeger"; not the first one to defend a city, but a good one to back up the first one that does.
Revolver Shogun: Honestly, the design that, as currently proposed, I still struggle to see as a Jaeger, as opposed to a Super-Heavy Conventional. The description of guns and guns and guns and missiles sounds less like something that at least could grapple with the Kaiju, and more like a tank that sprouted legs. The biggest issue, in my mind, is that while having more than one type of weapon has obvious benefits, having everything paired like that gets a bit ridiculous. If I may be so bold, I have a picture that I think could fit the spirit of the design (and is pretty solidly Jaeger-y to boot), but gives an opportunity for at least justifying more robust armoring and modest fisticuffs (as in, punching), but also still justifies having several different types of weapons equipped. It's just that, instead of 2-4 of everything, it's got one of everything (the right arm is positioned so that it's difficult to see, but it has a weapon barrel attached). I would suggest that, if the shoulder gun is a Railgun, perhaps the arm gun could be a Plasma weapon, to give more damage type variety. And the beauty of missiles is the ability to swap out warheads for a given battle.
*Unnamed Grappler Jaeger*: One or more people have suggested a Grappler Jaeger. I am personally in favor of this, under a couple of thoughts/conditions. One, it needs to have at least some short-ranged ranged weapons equipped to the torso or something. Two, we need to pay tribute to a deceased professional wrestler with its name. I can provide a few particularly notable wrestlers that could be used for inspiration.

I'm really not trying to impose views here. Instead, I'm trying to help folks understand where I'm coming from, and maybe give us some collective ideas to work over to help us get some awesome Jaegers out there into the field.

Took me a bit to work that up, hope everyone enjoys!

@Killbles I stole your caster, bwahaha.

Boo, hiss. Literally the worst person in the world.

You may as well post the rest of the rules that go with the funky things.

- Being built into your hands means they replace that hand when firing, you'll be a little more vulnerable during your opponent's next turn unless you're dodging. They also have a negative effect on grappling while deployed. (Basically you're playing until your next turn with one hand!)
- Require a free hand and arm slot to use and an arm slot to fit. This means you can't be holding something while you fire and you can't have any extra arm mounted weapons. They also won't work with things like Piston fists as they take up most of the internal space. External propulsion like rocket fists are obviously okay.
- You can use your HtH or Ranged to shift locations when you make a called shot, whichever is higher.
- The number of attack dice is selectable, firing more shots makes it more likely to overheat, which is bad. AP is based on range from the target.

I should just go make my own quest, with plasma casters and hookers!

You know what, forget the hookers!

Seriously, AU Gipsy Danger quest could happen. How lazy/busy am I..?
