Mh, what to do....

[X] Wait, plot, scheme.
-[X] Your time will come, you WILL be Queen of Pancake Castle.

[X] Consider fetching Hitomi to cure sayaka's Vitamin F(riendship) deficiency.
[X] Ferry Sayaka home....wait, where does she live? Maybe Hitomi knows...

okay how can we get in contact with hitomi in the future because we don't have functioning arms or a voice

[X] Grab (...steal. It's for a good cause!) some ice cream and blankets for Sayaka, then sit nearby and try to look nonthreatening. You don't know enough about her situation to give effective advice, and you aren't exactly close enough that trying to do so regardless is likely to turn out ok. If she wants to talk, listen, but otherwise just try and be there for her.
-[X] In the meantime, try to find Hitomi. She'll have a better idea of what to do, right?

The inside of the room turns out to be preposterously fancy. The polished hardwood floor is partially covered by an ornate carpet, swirls of color blended together into an intricate design. Most of the walls are bookshelves that stretch from floor to ceiling, collectively containing what looks like enough reading material to fill a small library. One of the only two non-shelf walls has a pair of giant paintings on it, both of which look like they should be hanging in a museum. Business as usual in Mitakihara City.
[c] Subsume the hospital room! You refuse to be outdone by such a minor thing, no matter how silly Mitakihara is!
Somehow, Sayaka's "make Sayaka feel better" plan seems to have managed to miss the criteria even more than yours did.
Damnit, Sayaka.
How are you supposed to handle this?
[c] Subsume Sayaka!

anything you could say or do right now is liable to just make her even less happy,
[c] Locate another Magical Girl for Sayaka to talk to.
-[c] Subsume them.
Or Hitomi, I guess.

[c] Locate Charlotte. Have her deploy cake at Sayaka until morale improves.
-[c] Persuade Sayaka to subsume the cake.
[c] Send a Faas to give her flowers.
[c] Push a Polina in her direction to nurse her. Sayaka is basically a form of cheese, so it'll be fine.
[c] Have Shemesh display his majestic planetoid lasers. They're so cool.
-[c] Have Shemesh stop displaying his majestic planetoid lasers at Charlotte.
--[c] Have Shemesh subsume some cake.

[c] Cut away to another scene.

The sigil has changed again- the book and the sapling at the center are still the same, but the tulips on the outer edge are now accompanied by several small, partially transparent purple symbols. Each one has an obvious silhouette of Charlotte at its center, and is encircled by embroidered-looking decals. They look a lot like the ones that were ringing the inside of her "room", actually.
So Charlotte appears on the insignia because she's still alive and in charge of her labyrinth? It's supposed to represent the barrier, so that makes sense. It even includes Charlotte's insignia, which is pretty cool.

Would it be considered cruel, subsuming your own familiars?
Yes.

Speaking of which, a couple of the flying green hands are whizzing around above the grass not too far away from you. Strange, what are they doing here?

You float a little closer, and quickly realize that the area the familiars are hovering around is smack in the middle of the path Sayaka cut through the foliage earlier. Right, the Faas first came over here back then... and it looks like they've been busy. The formerly unevenly hacked grass has been neatly trimmed away and replaced by a layer of large flowers, creating a long streak of colorful flora leading back in the direction of the white void. It looks… rather nice, actually. Kind of like a garden path.
The lawn is beautified at last!

You watch on as one the Faas carefully plants another flower, assisted by two others.
A giant's windmill's despair children, gardening. How oddly heartwarming.

"…I can heal your hand."

At that, Kyousuke slowly turns around, his face finally coming into view. His expression seems neutral, but you can see a pair of faint tear trails leading down his face. He stares at Sayaka for a long moment before speaking.

"…do you hate me, Sayaka?"

"…what?"

"Do you enjoy seeing me in pain?"

"I-" Sayaka takes a step back, clearly shocked, "no, of course I-!"

"Then why are you mocking me?" Kyousuke interrupts. "You know that there's nothing you can do. There's nothing that anyone can do. The doctors have already all but told me to give up hope."

"Kyousuke, I'm-"

"They haven't said it outright yet, but they might as well have." Kyousuke says, his tone gradually growing more distraught. "My arm is impossible to fix. It would take magic, a literal miracle, for it to ever regain full function."

"I know, that's what I-!"

"Why do you come here, Sayaka?!" Kyousuke asks, anger suddenly overtaking his words. "Why do you keep forcing me to listen to music?! Why do you keep tormenting me with something I'll never be able to play again?! There's no point! Not when I'm-!"

He chokes and turns away, his entire body shaking.

"…when it's… worthless, now…"

"Kyousuke, I… please…" Sayaka pleads.

"…just go, Sayaka…"

Kyousuke's voice has lost all the heat it possessed less than half a minute ago. Now it just seems… broken.
:cry::cry::cry:

Sayaka finally seems to get tired of being talked over and ignored. Taking a deep breath, she walks forward and shoves her hands on to Kyousuke's left arm, badly startling him.

"Sayaka-!"

Kyousuke's instinctive protest quickly ends as bright blue light begins shining out of Sayaka's palms. He looks at her for a moment, dumbstruck, then back to the magic being worked on his arm.
And then Sayaka was a miracle worker.

Kyousuke should have a more favorable opinion of Sayaka from now on, and he probably feels bad for being harsh with her. Sayaka now has a much better chance of a successful love life if she gets over her hurt feelings.

Oh, and Kyousuke now knows that magic is a thing.

Whilst sitting around mentally twiddling your thumbs as you wait for Sayaka to finish, you suddenly realize that you're feeling better than you were a minute ago. A little less empty, a little less starved. Oh good, looks like your grief regeneration finally... wait a second.

You look down at yourself. That's... not just your grief naturally replenishing itself, you don't think? It is coming back- with how low you are on grief right now, you can actually feel it seeping into your stores, gradually trickling in as if from a slowly dripping IV line- but it doesn't feel like it's being directly created by you. It feels like it's coming from somewhere; like you're somehow pulling it away from its original source. But what could-

Sayaka's magic momentarily intensifies, the shining glow in her vision briefly drawing your focus back to her.

...hang on. Is... is Sayaka producing grief for you?
Ashy just now realizes that she is literally powered by a forsaken child. :D

"I'm fine. Just… fine." Sayaka says as tears start running down her face, clearly showing that she's anything but fine. "I'm just… I'm just gonna sit here for a while, okay...?"

Sayaka begins to cry in earnest, while you sit off to the side feeling altogether rather useless. Somehow, Sayaka's "make Sayaka feel better" plan seems to have managed to miss the criteria even more than yours did. How are you supposed to handle this?
Sayaka needs a hug.

As the lack of options indicates, next update is going to be another interlude. Pretty sure it's going to be the longest story post to date.
I'll prepare lots of popcorn while I wait.

[:V] Give Sayaka emotional support.
[:V] Give Sayaka headpats.
[:V] Just sit there all menacing-like while Sayaka releases her teen angst.
[X] Wait.

@Flairina I just realized that Ashy tilted at a windmill. But the windmill was a giant. I have no idea how I missed the obvious reference for so long, especially since it was lampshaded by everyone.

[X] Ferry Sayaka home....wait, where does she live? Maybe Hitomi knows...
Why ask Hitomi when Sayaka herself knows how to get home?

Quick question, could someone do a drawing of our insignia, or symbol? I'm curious about how it looks and how it may evolve with either the cohabitation or subsumption of other witches. Also, seeing as we subsumed Sayaka, does her wish form's symbol integrates into ours?

[X] Just casually mention that you think she can heal basically for free now, judging by your reserves. Maybe it'd cheer her up?
Or maybe she won't be so happy knowing that every use of her power recharges the giant book witch that ate her.

She should probably be informed - open communication is good - but it's not so cheery information for her.

Huh, Sayaka using magic does recharge Ashtaroth. I did not expect that.

You watch on as one the Faas carefully plants another flower, assisted by two others. You… think you'll leave them alone for now. The Ummashtart too. If your grief doesn't eventually recover on its own then you might reconsider, but it would be rude to just up and assault the help.
Hmm, so they didn't try to 'fix' the grass, just trimmed it neat and planted flowers over them? Sounds lovely, always good to see competent landscapers at work, and it's within their understood nature. Very proactive familiars. Makes me somewhat disappointed in the Ummashtart though. Having a duty to 'set the scene' is already vague, but outside that Drider catching Hitomi they haven't done anything.

And yes Ashtaroth don't eat your barriers inhabitants, it's poor manners at the very least.
again why I think we should give her charlotte
if it works as being an extension of our barrier then we could send out charlotte, so that technically sayaka is permanently within range of out barrier
and charlotte already seems to have taken a liking to her
there is the problem that mami and homura might take.... exception to her presence. but I really can't think of anything else
Ignoring for the moment that Charlotte is a witch and can't leave the barrier at all, it still wouldn't work because Charlotte has no Sayaka in her. All of her soul is bound inside Ashtaroth and her barrier by extension.
Being fair, I think her plan was less 'this'll set my world right' and more 'I made this stupid wish that got me stuck in this awful situation just to do this, I should do it while I've got the chance'.

It really sucks how much her wish has completely failed to resolve any of her problems in ways that make her happy. Seriously, one half was made to save a friend who was in minor danger at best, and she got eaten and bound to a witch in the process. The other half was made to help her crush who has no idea how she feels and broke her heart trying to get rid of her. Usually you at least get the veneer of a wish being what you want only for it to horriblely backfire in an ironic fasion. This one didn't even do that much, just limped into the room and crashed to the floor in abject failure.

Ironically enough, given the likely alternatives if she kept being an MG for longer than a week or so, being eaten by Ashtaroth might very well have been one of the best thing that could have happened to her.

Makes me wonder how much grief we require to maintain ourselves, not to mention our roommate Charlotte? I'm hopeful that Sayaka provides enough grief to maintain the both of us, but if not, we may need to go hunting once more for either a witch we can actually consume, or for another magical girl to increase the grief production to balance the grief expenses.

Since with her grief being taken away there should be nothing stopping Sayaka from just spamming magic endlessly, she probably could provide enough for a hundred witches, if we even need it.

I know, I did a long post on the subject. But ask this; how much must the choices handed to you suck if being soul-bound to a giant grief monster that ate you is probably the best one?

I'm not sure on the amount, but if this was a real quest I'd be giving the QM some funny looks right now. Having your characters form a perpetual energy generator just by existing together seems like it'd make fights way to easy, just keep spamming your strongest attacks until you win. This could be mitigated by enemies having the same power or just being much stronger, but with what I know of PMMM, eh... We'll see.

Also while I'm looking forward to the interlude and hope it's full of interesting characters doing interesting things and other cool stuff, a small part of me just wants to skip to the next update where Ash wakes up to Sayaka screaming because Charlotte cuddled up to her at some point in the night.

I've seen this 'grief powered magic' stuff before in pmmm fanfiction and I can never wrap my head around it in context.

It's been my head canon for the longest time that magical girls fuel their power with positive emotion, create grief as a byproduct because magic is zero sum, grief gets purged from the magical girl and concentrated in grief seeds, and the only reason witches can do any magic at all is because they inflict grief on humans, harvest the positive emotion and use that.

It would be dreadfully inefficient after all if the witch was using whatever resource coobs is capturing them for to do their magic with.

Has there been word of god on how this stuff works? There's been a lot of spin off works that I haven't read maybe they go into it idk

E: Like, there's got to be a reason that QB's ultimate entropy defeating device isn't witches and magical girls feeding off of each other and telekinetucally cranking a turbine shaft, right?!

well we actually don't know what happens when a witch leaves their labyrinth, we just know that when we did it it didn't feel pleasant to say the least
and as for the other thing well, that's kinda how pmmm wishes usually go wrong, you wish for something but it turns out that what you wished for doesn't actually make you happy or your life better

well adfligo systema works fine with it. why not here

incubators actually use grief specifically as a fuel source, since it can be used as a free energy machine. in a way the incubators plan is exactly what you described. magical girls and witches used as a fuel source to telekineticly crank a turbine shaft
grief is simply a much stronger fuel source than magic, and its self replenishing.
its a free energy machine where instead of burning coal or fuel or anything. it runs on human souls
