Hmmm... Currently busy with New Year's (Happy New Year to everyone by the way!) so not in the right headspace to think right now. I'd like to remind everyone that these individuals will rather be like lions with an open mouth-kind of saying. And I'm really inclined on getting the underwater colony rather than the space colony now as, pessimistically speaking once the fifty year duration is up, I think the Council will simply reclaim the 'land' again (aka get the property).

As for the Mercs... do they look like Asians (thus from Draconis Combine?) or was it simple happenstance that four (or three since the Catapult is kinda general) of the Mechs are from DC? Can we also ask what do they plan on doing if they do get out of the system? Do they want to get back to the Inner Sphere? Something2x?

I don't think Mercs have StarMaps Hellteddy, since this is BT, and everyone tends to stay on their corner (if a Mech Pilot/MechTech, then only there), but I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask since they do want out of the system.

Not sure about offering Satellites or Ocean tech. The fact they do have GTO rocket tech does imply they already have the launch capability for Satellites, but if they don't have either, then we'll have a massive advantage over them in the long term that I don't want to trade away this early.

Note that gauging someone's nationality from their ethnicity is something of a mug's game in Battletech. Some places do tend to have particular ethnic makeup but even in those it tends to be more about culture. Especially after nine centuries of mingling. Though authors/artists do forget sometimes.

That said, multiple Panthers led by a Dragon is a bit of a giveaway, yes.

The Periphery tends to be where down-on-their-luck Merc units go to circle the gurgler for a bit before becoming outright pirates, so it's a bit awkward that we can't whistle up the MRB for a report.

Though there's no particular indication that they've been doing anything too bad either way, given that we knew they were around but there was no mention of behaviour. Plus those mechs aren't that suited to war crimes urban peacekeeping. Panthers can load tear gas or inferno missiles but besides that, not great beyond terror factor of "look at how big my battlemech is".

I suspect what they want is to find work somewhere where they aren't going to get Company Store'd.
Cadre work on Gunhallow would probably work pretty well, though conditions might be a bit rustic. Plus technical assistance if their techs have the free time.

For the record, you guys should be making a [-] Plan each for both Question and Trade Deals properly for easy counting.

...and yeah, the reason I asked if they're from DC is if that means we're nearby said part of the Inner Sphere. Being raided by Samurais is... Well.

Well. :V

Mercenaries And Planets New
The Shimmering Petal Mercenary Company was all too eager to answer any questions TAUBENMUTTER sent their way, as long as they figured it didn't harm their chance to get off the planet and anywhere where they wouldn't get bled dry for every scrap bolt and nut for their 'Mechs as they were currently being bled here. That didn't mean they could give TAUBENMUTTER and, by extension, the Furina De Fontaine everything the same hoped to obtain. There were limits to their knowledge.

However, the thing they could tell with 100% truth and authenticity was their history.

Created in 2798 by a group of disgruntled Ronin within the Draconis Combine (an apparent Japanese Ethnostate harking back to the Edo-Era of the Japanese Islands re-created in this universe), these Ronin gathered their Battlemechs and what retainers and soldiers they could bring along to first plunder along the border to the Lyran Commonwealth (a sort of...mercantile neo-feudal German culture-esque nation), before fleeing the consequences of their actions to the border near the Federated Suns (a mix of British and French culture wrapped up in "one neat package of hypocrisy, self-important superiority, and colonial exploitation in the name of "FREEDOM!"") and Capellan Confederation (a...Chinese(?) Dynasties-Era Slave-State with castes and a Heavenly Throne) where they plied their trade for some years before running through the Free Worlds League (a mishmash of hundreds of star systems united under one umbrella because they couldn't figure out how to kill each other and take over without getting eaten by the Cappelans or Lyrans) before ending up in the "Eastern" Periphery, making money and taking contracts for the next two centuries while they slowly migrated "South" through the Magistracy of Canopus (a matriarchal nation that depends on tourism to stay afloat...despite the apparent difficulty of interstellar travel that this universe has) before slowly sickering into the Deep Periphery while they took contract after contract from the "Mercenary Review Board" (an organization set up by ComStar to ensure that the Neo-Feudal nations of this crapsack universe would have plenty of mercenaries to call upon that could be relied upon whenever they were required) before taking the plunge into unlicensed mercenary work to obtain the money they needed after a turn of bad luck after bad luck.

When asked for star maps and data on the places they had been to, the Shimmering Petals replied with a question about employment and contracts. They wanted to get the hell off this planet and were willing to give the maps and information...so long as they were brought off-world.

TAUBENMUTTER asked if they wished to have a garrison contract for the second world of the UNSC instead, with free repairs to their Battlemechs to the best ability of the nation and the agreement of their technicians added on top. They would be paid in money and travel to a port of their choosing within reason the moment they decided to terminate their contract.

...

The Petals agreed and shared two maps. One of the nearest slice of the Periphery, and another of a general map one of them managed to scrounge up from their data banks on the state of the Inner Sphere.

Discussions were had, and eventually, offers were made to the Council of Ten. Medical technology of the likes they had never seen before, Seismic scanners that could accurately predict emerging earthquakes days in advance if enough sensors were scattered around, Consumer Goods in large quantities from entertainment to exotic foods and luxury items, Broadcast Syndication of UNSC IPs (though nothing that wasn't seen as rudimentary already), Raw Materials set to be shipped on a yearly and percentage basis by the colony to each of the Council Members, alongside Educational Primers to lift their people from their slow technological decay.

The Council of Ten agreed without reservation to this first offer, likely fearing that trying to barter would end up driving the Furina away, thinking they had made out like bandits and thieves in broad daylight.

Still, they would check the systems and information religiously, editing and cutting out all parts they found too subversive and too anti-ethical to their grasp on the planet. They thought the strange spacers had shot their shot and had their attempt at subverting their people and captive customers neutralized for now.

They did not know that TAUBENMUTTER could barely restrain its disappointment that they had failed to catch any of the worms and viruses hidden within the data packets that were spreading through their systems. None would be activated for now, of course. That would be left for when the planet could be properly flipped, as the Heads agreed that the current political system of Affati could not be tolerated. Yet, they had to ensure its people would rectify it themselves, lest their saviors be seen as conquerors.

So...what now?

Going to wait until the research list ETAs are updated before deciding. There was only a few years left before the KEARNY-FUCHIDA DRIVE research is completed, and if it did finish this turn or only has one year left, I want to go back to Gunhallow to use its Germanium deposits to help set up a Jumpship factory, so the UNSC isn't entirely dependent on the Fontaine for sustainable interstellar travel.
Else, probably going to settle for targeting Planet 778 for a quick annex before heading back.

Out of curiosity, what have been the reactions to the Inner-sphere and the factions?
The major players are touched upon in the update, but for most it is incredulity, being caught off-guard, confusion, and a slight rejection of the information being provided being actually accurate instead of some falsehoods wrapped in desperation given to butter them so that the Petals can leave the planet. Surely a civilization with access to FTL that can be proliferated far wider than their own would not fall to *checks notes* feudalism and...low-anime mecha warfare?

Taking the Mercs to Gunhallow for repairs(And supplies for us) and then to Sigar IV for their garrison contract(We will probably need to build them a base) and then continue looking for more colony locations for all the colonists on-board, seems like a good path forward to me.

Might want to go back to Gunhallow, we do so every two to three trips I guess for resting? And we might want to pick up some of the MBTs from Gunhallow if we haven't been producing them yet.

Really want to touch base with that other primitive world with the gene thingy since I'm curious what's our take on that...

Basically Colony x2 or x3 then Rest. Though we might want to check up on some systems so to speak if something comes up... :V

Research list's times has been updated. Jumpdrive reverse engineering is still at 3 years, so I think we have enough time for another stop. Honestly thought that setting up a moon colony would take longer, but I suppose being able to park a colony ship in orbit with all the required materials and equipment cuts down on the time and effort required.

Actually, I am also somewhat interested in seeing how a completely new colony set up will go, so why not?
