I say standard deflector. We want something that's easily mass-producable, here.

Those look like some huge-ass impulse thrusters.

I am a bit concerned about the anti-proton deflector, if it's only just being proposed as an idea, along with the internal spacing issues.
We don't really need to make a Defiant II-class.

In this case I think and outrider design with the standard deflector is probably the best bet.

We can't really afford the loss of internal space given we've already chosen one option that decreases it, and if we go for another prototype technology then I'd prefer it be on our weapons and other tactical systems rather than the deflector.
Especially because as a Light Cruiser, part of its mission is being able to range out alone for some time. Crippling the range doesn't seem wise.

Could we get the prototype deflector, but put it in the same place as the standard deflector? Enhanced shields seem like a good idea regardless if that would work.

It looks like the prototype deflector should be able to solve the range issue by offsetting the performance loss, allowing us to go with internal nacelles. My logic here is that I don't want to do three prototype designs on this ship, and I think we'd rather save the second prototype system for when we get to Tactical.

In a vacuum I'm personally okay with putting three prototypes on a ship, though it's towards the upper end of my limit. I just am looking at the ship we have right now, especially with us already taking the larger impulse thrusters, and not wanting to make internal space even more limited. Making project Saber easier to produce with less prototypes used is just icing on the cake.

It should be noted that with the Borg hanging over our heads that we'll have a lot more political leeway to play with prototypes than we normally do. The Borg have made current paradigms effectively obsolete in the view of Starfleet and there is going to be a lot more stomach to accept prototype designs and trickier manufacturing requirements if it means that the end result is a ship that can hold their own against the Borg. Remember that Earth itself was threatened. The Council is going to be surging money into warships to ensure that never happens again.

That said, at the moment I think standard deflectors would do for now. I think the big remit we should consider that we want any prototype systems relevant to Tactical, as that's what Starfleet desperately wants to make sure that their ticket isn't going to get punched.

I'm liking the idea of the prototype, but that might very well be because I'd prefer how it would look aesthetically over any actual concerns about it being better or worse.

I think that with us taking the prototype impulse, the agility of the ship will allow us to minimize the profile anyway by orienting correctly. Therefore I'm fine with the outriding nacelles, alongside ease of construction by using the current standard.

Something to note, don't take prototype nacelles on anything we want semi- mass producible. They've whiffed every time we took em and are the most complicated part of the ship apparently.
