Lol. Setting the scene like that for Tenten might just help repair her opinion of Sakura ;)

Am I the only one that thinks it'd be funny if Sakura got given this town once she finished saving it? And any other village she saves in the future? She could wind up uniting the region under her banner by accident ;)
... Wait, what.

Did tenten get a system too? Is she a reincarnator?
No, this setting (or at least this version of it) has guns. Ninja just don't use them, normally.

I'm wondering if there's actually normal gunpowder around, or if all bullets in-setting require a small explosive seal instead. It would explain the rarity of guns, and why most ninjas don't bother if it's such a time and chakra investment.

And for a girl who works all day at a weapon shop, Tenten's had the time to learn and manufacture the rounds herself.

Guns existing in any fashion is definitely no weirder than Mecha-Naruto or Mecha-Kurama. ...Naruto's filler did some really silly things.

Tenten sits beside her quite suddenly, spooking her from her thoughts, and Neji steals her mead without so much as a word. It seems he doesn't want her drinking any more than she wants to drink. That does of course mean he's also drinking his tankard a few moments later when his meal and mead are delivered for the morning. If she didn't know any better, she'd say that the way he's drinking it without a thought implies he might have a drinking problem.
Neji: I don't have a drinking problem, I have a drinking solution.

So obviously Tenten saw a bad movie, with a quote she loved, and somehow got the same type of weapon.... Which was a Glock...

Also it is obvious that this version of Konoha and in fact the world is closer in tech to the Boruto era of the World, which had things like hamburgers, and as far as I could see tv's and stuff in civilian use...

This also means mysterious guns are more advanced that musket like ones from the Naruto era... Which seemed to be used by the Land of Snow?

There was a whole plot point where she didn't have the money for her FF14 sub because she slept through the Hokage explaining their stipend.

I can't help thinking that if...Sakura somehow wins or acquires Mecha Naruto, that she may make a mistake in asking Tenten to help fix it up.

Which is likely to lead to Tenten somehow convincing her that said machine is in testing, long term testing, and Sakura getting a feeling that she just may never get Mecha Naruto back... Before dismissing it as a silly thought.

Also said Mecha Naruto may just have no choice in the matter, he would have too much dakka for Tenten not to make him her boyfriend or maybe just boy toy? Which would be funny, Tenten trying to convince him that she didn't love him just for his weapons...

She in fact loved him because he was a weapon...

I'm fine with Naruto having guns. It makes sense, even. They have movies and hecking airships!

It just bugs me that they specifically have Glocks. Naruto isn't set in Japan, but it also sure isn't set in Europe or America and it's a darn sight closer to Japan than anywhere else (for example they use the ryō as currency which is a historical Japanese coin). I was today days old when I learned that Glock comes from the German name for bell. How does any of that make sense here?

Now, Sakura could maybe get away with having a Glock and knowing what it's called if she'd picked it up in some random game system bullshit somewhere, but I don't think Tenten has been in those.

There's no particular reason why there couldn't be a gun called a glock in this setting. It's hardly the only thing we've seen that shares a name from the real world that would be trademarked. Glock 'O Clock is a joke. Just save yourself the stress and let it go ;)

So I am like, really high, so take this with salt.
But like, what if it means mock with my fuckin, gun?

Glock.

The Naruto tech level is notoriously a mess. Leaf and Sand communicate via messenger bird in one arc, then the daimyo communicate via real-time satellite uplink in another. Interestingly, Kishimoto is on record as saying he specifically does not want guns or motor vehicles in the Narutoverse ever (and presumably that gun in Wave was an accident). For the guns at least, I can't blame him. The core concept of the setting collapses if ninja can use guns instead of shuriken and fireballs, or more importantly, if civilians can use guns against ninja.

Not really true. Maybe on academy students and ninja not trained for the chunin exams, but most ninja can outrun a bullet. I'm faily certain most ninja would prefer a sword they can wield over a gun they can slice in two with almost no difficulty. Plus, you'd have to predict the location of a running ninja with a bullet that isn't as fast as them.

Per Google, Usain Bolt's top speed when he set the sprinting world record was 44.72km/h. A cheetah's top speed is 120 km/h. A low-velocity bullet's speed is 720-1,800 km/h.

I'd separately question your source for the assumption that ninja can slice a gun in two, considering guns are made of steel just like one assumes kunai are.

The tech level of Naruto actually makes sense when you realize that anything useful (TV, Radio, computers, vehicles,) can't be mass produced because of the perpetual Cold War. Mass production is expensive, and the best and brightest of the generation are always going to be pushed into the ninja academy.

So mass production is a big target for sabotage, every generation has a brain drain as anyone with talent will be scouted for the meat grinder, and any actual tech that is created is a strategic advantage that you will lose if you field it too often, due to reverse engineering.

The setting being in what looks like stasis makes a lot of sense. Really we just see a brief period before large scale manufacturing becomes possible, but at this point in time there's highly specialized bespoke technology that is basically unaffordable for most non-ninja.

As annoying as it is to see Sakura literally have a PC that can run games that I have to assume are technically analogous to the games of the same name, it's not something that would be impossible for the Boruto setting to have, assuming the ninja nonsense slowly gets sidelined in favor of larger armies with standard chakra training and firearms.

If we're policing culture purity, surely this is more egregious than a glock?
Maybe he can add some diversity to this, even if he is a white male… nevermind.
The intent is fairly clear, and it probably translates alright if you squint, but taken uncritically it implies even wilder things about the setting than the gun.

I find it hard to imagine a parent going, "my six-year-old is clearly a genius, and they must equally clearly therefore become a ninja", especially when both in canon and in this universe, it seems to be the kid who makes the final decision.

I think this is our evidence that this simply isn't meant to be a hard fantasy setting. You can posit an interesting world where modern technology exists without mass production, but what percentage of the population needs to have affordable home computers before MMOs can be financially viable? What about the percentage needed to sustain a professional streaming industry?

Sure, maybe half a century in the future, but not now when twelve-year-old kids are still routinely being sent out on combat missions, with pointy things designed after farming tools as their notion of standard weapons technology.

So I am with you there. The lack of mass production fits pretty well into the way the Naruto setting works, and games as a whole, especially given that yes they are in fact our modern equivalents, imply either an interdimensional rift, or a manufacturing mega nation secretly hidden in a Walmart parking lot somewhere.

I firmly understand you.
But like, we're 46 chapters into a story that started with Sakura staying up too late playing the Resident Evil 4 remake (or at least within the first couple of chapters)
I really feel like we're too far in to be even thinking about just how AU this story is.

The reality is this story started without a lot of thought, and it having gone on 7 to 8 months now doesn't suddenly change that. We all, me included, just kinda have to deal with what's already been written.
And if I already have to deal with it...

Kakashi literally chops lightning in half at one point, it's safe to assume that Jonin are so superhuman that guns actually don't matter.
While its rare, humans in our world have dodged bullets, I feel like by the time you're a chunin in the Naruto-verse, a world that already has a superhuman standard to its humans in the first place, you're probably pretty okay handling a basic handgun.

Anything past that... Well I'm not getting into a gun debate with gun enthusiasts, let alone a gun debate with my Naruto fanfiction thread XD

This is kinda exactly what I'm talking about, actually, story logic wise.
I started this story on a theoretical that basically couldn't co-exist with the setting.
There's a fundemental line of logic the story works on that doesn't make a lot of sense.

So anyone, 40+ chapters in, trying to argue logical consistency in tech, is insane.
