Rings and Grudges (A LOTR/Warhammer Fantasy Crossover)

[X] Plan: Turning their flank

This is the way to go. Our thunderers have some of the best armor-piercing ranged weapons in the world, so using them to screw up the heavy armor formation assaulting this section of the wall just makes sense. It appears that all the high-end Umbar forces are on this flank anyway, so the Eastern Wall should be able to hold without much issue. They mostly have to deal with a couple thousand archers and some medium infantry. The battle will be decided on this western wall.

looking at the remaining forces I was concerned we´re mainly going to face their elite forces but it looks like around half of their remaining army is still made up of savage and corsair chaff, which will be largely useless for the assault on our admittely meager fortifications. Furthermore around a third of their marines, a fourth of their legionaries and a fifht of their blackguards were lost to the balistas, ripping appreciable holes into their elite formations to no damage of our own forces. We were very, very lucky

Omake Report in the night.
Omake
Report in the nigth.

Ondek entered the command post of his thane; the longbeard outside letting him in when his turn came.
"My thane" he said passing Gotri his report. Definitly a full beard, but a bit younger than him, even thoug by looking at his tired face one could hardly tell. He did not envy the Dawi.

"Can you give me a brief rundown of it?"

Ha the lad was probably overworked again.
"Yes, I noted the lack of mutations on our enemies and the presence of what is probably ritual scarring, I wrote some deep conjecture about what that could mean, but I shall limit myself only to what could be usefull in this battle. I belive the overall command structure and military doctrine of our enemies closely resembles that of Norscan raiders, it won't be a perfect comparison but at least a workable one. I read the reports of the empire during the years before the chaos invasion so I came up with some suggestion that could help us".

"I have to ask you to make it quick but I am listening".

"You see my liege if they mimick the organisation of Norscans then infigthing for leadership is quite common, the subcommanders are constantly tryng to impress the troops to gain glory and status; in such a context the leader will know of this possibility and be wary of it. I suggest that we fake the fall of the town by the hands of the group sent to the dock: remove any banner from the wall, set up some controlled fire in the streets, make some umgi wear the armor of the fallen elite that are currently rottin on the beach, then we put the most expensive looking armour on a umgi horsemen and we make it stand in front of the open gate to give the impression that he is some winning general of theirs. Of course the enemy leader gave his liutenant on the beach some way to comunicate the fall of the town, but if we fake a challenge from this group it his expected that he will not send this message. Amongst norscans such a challenge is often resolved with a duel between the generals, so we could lure the commander of the army out; if he does so we fill him with arrow coming by hidden archers on the wall. They will probably assault the wall then, but we can hide all our mele troops at the base of it; they should be invisible from outside but perfectly in position when the raiders arrive at them; for our ranged troops I strongly belive we can hide all of them on the wall so they will just have to rise upp. We are risking very little and could gain a lot; if the plan goes perfectly we kill the leader immediatly, if they do not beliwe us it should be easy to: close the door, get the standards and our soldiers in position, if they belive the ruse but still attack head on we got the surprise factor anyway".
"You give me quite a seam to dig Ondek ,I will consider this for the future".

"Thank you my thane but there is something else I would like to share".

"Go on then".

Ondek paused for a moment tring to come up the rigth words to describe the aftermath of a succesfull typical norscans raid on a imperial town.

"Unless our foe cares more about his enemies than his soldiery I suggest that all umgi womenfolk be brougth to figth on the wall, I do not know how many of them are already doing so nor if they are trained; truth is that you don't need to be trained to trow a big enough stone outside of a wall and kill somebody. I understand that is possible for the city to hold without them risking their life, but....... if the city were to fall then those that died on the wall will be the lucky ones. Those to old to be on the wall should stay in and keep a close eye on the childrens; who I am not suggesting should do the same thing only because morale will colapse if the adults where to see them."
"A pretty grim advice".

"My thane, those reports.......I hope to be wrong but I suggest you speak of this possibility with the local commander whomewer it is. Just ensure that the umgi learn of this plan by their commander not from us, it will be hard enough as it is. I must underline that even if I am looking at them as norscans I am aware that they are actualy another people ,so base our defence solely based on my report is quite foolish."
After being discharged from his liege Ondek returned to the docks, there were still tatto patter to register and cultural product to be analised, after all if they wanted to better undersand and recognise their enemy in the future they had to study it now.

@Mad0Slayer omake,
I am rather conflicted about this one, I do belive that the spoiler part is something that fits the setting of warhammer but I also fear that it migth clash with the precedent segment in tone. A medievalish kinda of setting will have his share of medieval atrocities and sieges with their aftermath were defenitly part of those.
I really tried to avoid any graphic content and I do belive to have succeded, but if I were to be completly wrong I will edit it.
For the timeline i would say that this is immediatly after my first omake.

Now I gote some more ligthearted stuff to do.
edit
How do I share a meme I just made about this quest?
It is not hig quality but I really wanted to make it.

A little Dawi advice
A little Dawi advice

Dernmer was nervous it was all he could do to not show it but he could not help tapping the haft of his spear. He had joined the territorial guard last year at the age of nineteen summers to make his family proud. To do his bit to protect their home from the black men from Umbar he had drilled and trained with others of his age it had been fun and he had made a few friends. He had thought it would be easy just chase of a few raiders trying to carry off livestock and valuables simple really. But last night had put pay to that as he saw the men of Umbar throw themselves against their lines again and again in crazed abound.

Despite all the traps and obstacles and the Dwarfs strange magic thunder they just kept coming and coming. He was jolted from his thoughts by a large heavy callused hand that thumped into his back, making him jump slightly in surprise. Dernmer turned sharply to see a Dwarf with a long flowing black beard his eyes were sternly looking up at him. The Dwarf Dernmer noticed was smoking pipe-weed from an ornate pipe clenched between his teeth.

" Steady mailing would not want to cause a fuss, would be annoying if you died due to fear and I wouldn't worry too much, I and few others have had it worse, this is just a stroll pity..." His eyes bore through him as he glanced at his spear and then at how he was holding it, "manling lower that hand," his judging stare focusing on his dominant hand near the top of the shaft, "you never hold a spear that close to the head the shoddy thing is meant to give you the reach to kill it is not a dagger" the Dwarf grumbled and a cloud of pipe smoke rose into the air like fog.

Dernmer was too dumbfounded to say no to the Dwarf and soon his hands had ended up in an entirely different place on the spear all the while the dwarf was telling him about the battle he had fought alongside men from somewhere called the empire.

" Shoddy the whole lot was just about Umgak the way they were equipped non of them had fought in a pitched battle in their lives as non of them they had left that umgi city of Nuln before" stopping to dispense more wisdom, the dwarf glared at one of the buckles on his armour-like it had personly offended him.

"manling that buckle is in a bad hole, it is too rigid and it will constrict your lungs you will die faster than the others because uncomfortable armour distracts you at the wrong moment without fail." He Growled out as Dernmer sorted the issue, he would not want for his family to suffer from his death. He Waited for the Dwarf to continue his tale it was strange but the fear that had gnawed at his heart did not hold as greater hold as it once had. Something about this just made him feel better the Dwarf continued his tale.

"and it was just as those wazzocks were about to break from those Chaos warriors slaughtering their way through them until one of the soldiers a boy by umgi standards foolishly charged the Chaos warriors screaming at the top of his lungs lept at the largest of them and rammed his sword into that follower of chaos he died, of course, after all, you don't charge one of the fallen like a grobi on fire and expect to live"

The dwarf shook his head, "Still he showed those beside him that they could fight, of course, one of their captains wiped them back into order." He watched as the dawi unsheathed his axe his tale halting, "Looks like the battles to start soon lad, best get back to wherever your needed, also, don't charge like a wazzock into their formation and listen to the one in charge and you may just live to see the end of this.

with that, the strange Dwarf vanished leaving a more confidant and braver man standing where a fearful one stood before.

@Mad0Slayer here it is I thank you again for helping me

Logan who was trying to ensure you didn't do anything stupid, though after what those whazzock's did he didn't seem to be trying too hard.
...that Elder is going on a high for you siding with them on that Engineer Hall mishap, he is overstepping his boundaries by not following your command...Grimnirs Beard, I need a drink and abit away from politicking

I have to ask, is Wazzock the only insult you know?

Everyone doesn't only use a single insult like that. People don't talk that way. . .

And for a race that has competitions revolving around flinging ever more creative insults back and forth, it physically pains me to see Dwarves written this way. . .

Good lord what is driving these Umbari? Even if it doesn't have great walls assaulting the town with such a small numbers advantage and little usable siege equipment from the sounds of it is madness!

I can only assume their commander will be executed if he fails to take the port.
We'll it's not exactly the Umbari driving this war. They may be the footsoldiers but by this point there are few sons of Numenor from that city.

Regarding why they haven't broken. Well at the very least they want to contest the colony until their fleet arrives. Their main intention is to bleed us dry. The haven of Umbar has a population on par with lebannin, and more than enough migrants from Harad to fill the void. They have a population they can spend. Gondor does not.

For defeat, this won't hurt the black numenoreans much either. This is a small colony on the outskirts of eriador. Their objective is destroying the Gondorian fleet.

A few reasons's for this and it will become apparent why in the update, also it is essentially a death sentence to the elite of Umbar to back down from one of their objectives. (Especially as their previous targets were far easier to overcome) Being a tough nut to crack is also incentive enough for them to take it on because if it is this hard to take so early on is not something even an okay commander would want to have time to develop. Especially when it involves a group that is likely to be an issue should they have room to breathe.

Kind of, it won't hurt them too badly in the numbers department but their navy has also lost a fair number of ships which is far harder to replace. It's a case of Gondor lacking numbers to field a large navy Vs A group that has a large populace but a lack of facilities to meet their demand. (Or at least that is what I am aiming for though I am willing to change as I am not to sure just how developed Umbar is but given the fact their cheap troops either lack armour or have very poor quality gear could lead into that)

I have to ask, is Wazzock the only insult you know?

No, but it's not how Gotri is just yet, He is currently 78 and a very young Thane so between his age and position he does not get much lee-way in slinging insults to differing clan members who are his Elders especially ones who are part of his clans main guild so that's about all he can do, when it comes to others outside the clan it will be easier but he generally does not have to deal with others. That's about the only reason it's used so much and even that is going to fall to the wayside as he gets older.

That'd be great, if he only used it with Elders. But he doesn't. I've checked.

In this entire quest, you have ONLY used the Insult Wazzock. Period.

There has been zero variety, even when used against nominal peers.

Hell, its the only insult ANY Dwarf has used, not just Gotri.

I find it funny that Dwarfs have no happy medium, no compromise.

You are either a radical engineer that takes zero safety measures or a conservative engineer that is so anal about anything new that development grinds to a halt.

They can't just carefully practice trial and error in a sensible way with reasonable testing phases that don't last an unreasonable amount of years.

[X] Plan: Turning their flank.
I am really excited for turn 10, we start to grow faster and Idun gives extra bonuses.
We got a third action for expanding the hold and we get to respond to the long winter.
When we chose the wife I wasn't aware of the existance of this site, but I have to say that she gots stats comparable to ours in half of the years, who decided for her did really a good job.
Also I saw that we got a pretty hig bonus to ambush, we should use it more when we draw our plans.
I probably will not post an extra omake, it isn't working and so I prefer not to post it.
But I will ask @Mad0Slayer if he plans to give some kinda of bonus for stuff like art and picture in a similar way like runriki strollar does it.
I do not want to force hands and my meme doesn't really deserve bonus, but moneris work probably does.
Maybe add an extra bit along sidestory and apocrypha called media for this kind of stuf.

Their will as there have been a few of them now. (I just debating on whether they provide the standard bonus or a +15 but I leaning towards the +15 as artwork tends to require a lot of work, also a nice meme.)

Also will work on the insults. (Could have sworn I put others in but if that's the case will keep it in mind when I go forward and thanks for pointing it out I am still trying to nail down how dwarfs are.)

one of the insaluts could refer to how bad the thing being insulted is at mining crafting and smithing seems something that would happen
