The Dawi March to war- Part 3- Discoveries and Grudges
The sun shined above you, the clouds having long departed in the night. The last vestiges of the storm had ended long ago. While around you the umgi prepared for their departure, Arathorn hard at work as he talked with his commanders nearby. Many of them following his orders without question.
Turning away from him, you focused on watching as a few of your friends and kin departed for the hold, along with a number of umgi with them. As they departed it was clear how much the battle had changed their mood, with many of both Dawi and Umgi talking openly, and in some portions even singing with great cheer between one another. The garazi especially among them clung close to your kin, some of the elders even sporting tiny green ribbons, as their charges darted around them in joy. The guardedness of the umgi to your people having fallen away completely after the celebration. Glancing away from your kin you turned to focus on the elgi that had returned. Their leader, a confusing benevolent raven-headed elgi, having returned alongside a small number of his troop only a few days ago, while the main party was led by his children to aid the umgi further north.
It was a smart decision, even if you had to watch yourself more carefully around camp. Can't have Elgi think you're going soft. No doubt if there was another warboss nearby it wouldn't take much for a new Waaagh to begin again, from the routed remnants. Though why the Elgi decided to spend so much time talking with you and your kin was strange. Bah, probably the same breed as Teclis, too scholarly for their own good. Still, he had been useful in some regards, between the constant talk about your healers (and the talking too when he'd attempted to enter those tents), and kin. The Orcs had been on your mind for a while, they were different, a little too much so. The lack of their usual war-cries and equipment a worrying factor. You were sure that had these grobi been equipped as they usually had then the Throng would have been wiped out. Your concerns had piqued the interest of Elrond quite quickly, and while he'd been shady with a few things, you'd eventually developed a mutual acquaintanceship, particularly over the topic of Grobkulls. His wife having been captured and tortured by a tribe only a few centuries back. A fate your grandfather (on Ma's side) had faced while on route to Nuln.
While no doubt the Elgi thought he came away the greater from your talks, it had been enlightening. Your clan lacked not in skill or courage, but the grobi should have been more of a challenge, with at least a small core of urk among them. While the elf had heard rumors of 'Black Uruk's' to the south near Mordor, and the forests of the Greenwood, in all his 6,000 years he'd never faced urks, save the white orcs of Gundabad. Ancestors, this land was truly strange. Shaking your head you moved back towards your camp, the rangers already having departed to deal with the grobi. The Umgi had been quite surprised at your plans of staying to 'see it through, even more so when your rangers had departed before first light following the victory feast
You found Bjorn organizing your equipment as well as securing the Throng's gold in the event that you would need it. "Elder, is everything secured?" You asked while leaning against a nearby pillar for support. The sound of birds chirping around you as the wind seemed to pick up.
Bjorn let out an annoyed grunt before turning to you. "Secured! There's nothing to secure but ale and food. Also, keep an eye on those damned elgi, I swear I saw that leader of theirs eyeing up my beloved rune ax." He Grumbled to you as he glanced warily at the few elgi around the umgi.
You nodded glancing at them anxiously. "We will watch them then, never know what they could be You nodded glancing at them cautiously. "We will watch them then. I'll have words with the Elf, but till then stay on your guard. Never know what they could be up to, but make sure if the peace is broken, it will not be by Dawi hands." You said lowly while turning back to focus on him. "Though should they try anything. There will be a reckoning and grudges will be set right." Your voice rumbling.
Bjorn grinned eagerly while nodding though as he went to speak he stopped before jutting his chin off to the side. "Looks like the umgi is done. We can talk later my Thane, but I think it would be best if we knew where we were going." He said while going back to the inventory.
Glancing behind you spotted Arathorn approaching you the umgi looking far more relaxed than any time you had seen him in the last week. The umgi looking at you strangely, while giving you a slight nod. "Thane Gotri, Lord Elrond's scouts have reported that the goblins are retreating back to their hovels." He said though a dark look seems to come over him. "Sadly it seems in the night that a few hundred of the goblins snuck past us and assaulted the hobbits lands." His voice pained.
You shook your head before spitting to the side. "The Grobi will do as Grobi do. Still, those hobbit fellows seemed a little ill-prepared for such a thing. I assume many were lost?" You asked while your hand itched for the Damaz Kron, the hobbit from the umgi town having been a rather nice fellow to talk to and they had some good ale.
Arthorn Grimaced while shaking his head. "A few perished it seems the goblins were shaken and injured when they attacked. Thankfully the real damage was only done to some of their larger farms. Though from what was spotted it seems their farms for ale were all but destroyed in the region while a good portion of their winter stores were lost. So it is not as bad as it could have been.
You nodded while unhooking the Damaz Kron from your hip. Looking for the next open part ignoring some of the older entries you found the section for the grobi and made a small cut on your finger. This was just one more grudge that would need to be settled, and losing some of that promised ale was a worthy grudge.
Arathorn seemed rather worried and curious as to what was been wrote and glanced at it. Not that you minded as he would not understand. He only spoke up once you had completed writing the grudge. "Master dwarf, what are you doing?"
You glanced at the umgi in confusion surely your kin still kept a Damaz Kron for situations like this. Shrugging. "What's it look like umgi theirs grudges to be settled and the destruction of good ale can only be answered with blood." You stated firmly while the umgi only seemed to grow more confused and worried at your actions. Ignoring him you went back to writing the required grudges while also making a few plans to talk with your kin.
Grudge: Honoring the Fallen - Kazakal Droni Mingol - The Battle of the Thundering Watchtower saw many a grobi crushed under the dawi boot and volley fire of the umgi. Though few were lost the umgi still lost those among them in buying the time needed for the Throng to truly face them. You will avenge their fallen and honor their sacrifice with the taking of 5600 Grobi scalps. (0/5600 Progress so far)
Grudge: They Burned the Ale farms and house -During the battle of the Thundering watchtower a group of grobi went around the Throng and its umgi allies to strike at the simple hobbits burning their farms used in the making of ale and much of their winter stores. The Destruction of sample Ale is worthy of a grudge but to deny the clan the drink is an insult too far. This Grudge can only be settled with the taking of 10 000 Grobi scalps. (0/10 000 Progress so far)

You jumped off the back of the elgi wagon, nodding in appreciation of the thing. The lack of magic used in its construction surprising as even you had to admit that it was decently built for an elgi. Though how all the elgi around you seemed rather humble was rather strange as you had yet to deal with a boastful elgi. Or even one that spoke down to you, though there was some hostility among them. Not much you admitted but it was there as it seemed more of them were rather perplexed at you having come to the aid of the umgi. Which was downright worrying the dawi were the allies of the umgi and while elgi helped they had little to do with them.
Shaking your head there were other things to discuss and Elrond was ahead and you had let the issue lie long enough the journey having left you contemplating how to approach the elgi about his interest in your people's runes. Looking around you found him talking with one of his commander's, the wazzock dressed in far too much gold for your liking but he had seemed skilled enough. You waited patiently for the elgi to end his discussion with his kin and watched as the elgi commander nodded to you before departing.
Elrond turned to face you his grin growing wider as his eyes sparkled eagerly. No doubt eager to learn more about your old home, which was something you had gotten used to as you exchanged information. Nodding you stared him in the eyes. "Elrond, anything I should know about, or are things calm at the moment?" You questioned while finding a large stone to take a seat on.
Elrond gestured to one of his kin while looking at you. "A few orcs but they were dealt with quickly. Though Glorfindal is going to search for more of them in case they set up any ambushes, especially with the darkness that has encroached on these lands as of late." He said while looking at you.
Nodding you got comfortable. "So. What is your interest in my people's runes, Many of my elders have noted your eyes lingering on them. Why?" You asked staring at him closely your ax within reach should he try anything.
Elrond blinked as he leaned forward eagerly, the elf appearing almost giddy. "In all the Millenia of my years, I have seen many runes of your people, but in all that time there has only been one weapon I have seen such runes." You perked a brow at that, the elf now capturing your attention. "It was within a tome detailing the battle of Nírnaeth Arnoediad of the first age." The words of course meaning very little to you... Why was this reminding you of the time you'd tried to talk with Teclis? "Within this tome, was depicted a blade upon which sat runes that adorned its head. It is said that during the battle is was able to injure Glaurung 'The father of Wyrms', whose scales along were larger than entire houses" That... That caught your attention. "So I apologize..." Ancestors, even Teclis didn't do that. "If I caused your elders any discomfort, but surely you can understand why I would be interested. ...and if it's not too much to ask, could you tell me where they came from?." He said with a cough, the gleam in his eyes a familiar sight having had to endure the antics of loremasters and engineers eager to learn more.
You scratched your beard in thought as you processed the information before shrugging. "While I share kin with them, I am no runesmith. It was not my place, nor was I chosen as an apprentice, so I know little of their craft, but rest assured the knowledge of runes is no secret among my people." You chuckled pointing to some on your Az and armor. "Any Dawi can carve runes, talismanic as they are. But Powered runes are restricted solely to the Guild of Runesmiths." He looked pensively at you in thought, as you continued. "You would not happen to have the blade itself, a weapon from the golden age is a rare thing indeed." You got up and paced, wringing your wrists. "The art of runesmithing is a rather guarded art even among their guild and is something not even my clan know. Which is disappointing, as there's a fair few devices I'd like enruned." You looked longingly to the west where the clans cannon continued on its way back to the hold. "Though sadly it is not as common as it was in the ancestor days, and the prices demanded by guild members is exorbitant to say the least. Why the ones used by my clan were gifted to us by an apprentice of Thorek Ironbrow himself." Your voice was filled with pride as you spoke though a tone of sorrow seemed to resonate through you. "Sadly we paid for what we received, and while I'm sure they will serve my clan far longer than that of my life, I doubt they'll hold more than a flicker of power by the time my grandsons go grey." You look up to the concerned Elgi. "If you wish to know more, I would suggest searching out Snorri, he is our resident loremaster and bound to know more than I." You said with finality.
Elrond nodded as he seemed to back away from you a look of worry spread across his features. "I see, though I suppose it is best and I look forward to those discussions in the future. Though they will have to wait. We are not far from Fornost now and it has no doubt been taken despite Arassuil's best efforts. There may also be a chance that the slumbering weights that dwell there have awakened with his people's return." He said as he shifted from the friendly loremaster to a commander.
You let out a nod as you felt a fire in your belly rise. "I see, so the grobi have decided to work with the dead then. You will have to forgive me Lord Elron I have to let Agnar know so that he may prepare my kin for the coming fight." You said sharply much to the surprise of Elron who only seemed to nod.
Leaving behind the elgi, your hand spasmed as it went for your weapon. The thought of grobi and the dead working as one a worrying and strange occurrence. Hopefully, Agnar and his fellow Cult hood were up to the task to come. Still, you were not there yet and things needed to be handled before you could truely settle everything.
