[X] Ask Penpen what he would prefer.

Our best friend will cut this Gordian knot!

Growing Pains II: Modus vivendi
[X] You and Asuka in one apartment, Shinji and Rei in the other

You end up making seven different T-charts weighing out the pros and cons of each possible living arrangement, and this one seems to you to have the fewest drawbacks. Asuka doesn't have to share with the pilots, Rei gets the space she wants, Shinji doesn't have to deal directly with a new roommate if he doesn't want to. You reluctantly decide Pen2 will stay in the old apartment with Rei. His fridge is set up there already and you're pretty sure Rei would never forgive you if you took 24/7 access to her favorite creature away from her. You're going to have to make sure she doesn't smother him to death now that you can't always supervise him.

You get called up to Gendo's office the following afternoon, where Fuyutsuki and Gendo are waiting, along with a sullen-looking Asuka. You agree to do it before they even finish the formality of handing her over to you. Fuyutsuki and Gendo exchange a look before handing you your new apartment key and dismissing you.

Asuka is in an incredibly sour mood. It appears that her stay in a nice hotel was canceled in favor of keeping her in a locked barrack for a night in the Geofront. She also got the tongue-lashing of her life from Gendo after you left. You're not surprised. She does mumble something about Fuyutsuki standing up for her given she had managed to dupe him into giving up information more than once. This sucks. There might not even be a Geofront if it weren't for her yesterday. They should appreciate her more, et cetera, et cetera. You let her vent to you as you drive home, trying to sympathize where you can. It doesn't seem to help that much, but she's calmed down a little once you get to your apartment building.

You gather the three pilots and Pen2 in your living room and explain the new situation. You will be moving to the apartment next door with Asuka. Pen2 will remain in this apartment with Rei and Shinji. Nobody is happy with this. Asuka protests that two pilots of the opposite sex shouldn't be living together and insinuates Rei might take advantage of Shinji. Rei tilts her head in confusion. What does "take advantage" mean? Asuka turns as red as her hair and refuses to explain any further. Shinji looks at the floor with a determined look very suggestive that he's hoping it will collapse under his feet and kill him.

Rei asks why you have to move out. Her tone is neutral, but you can tell she's hurt by you choosing to live with Asuka over her. You gently explain that you do not think anybody here wants to be alone. Asuka begins to protest that she's fine alone, but you give her a look that shuts her up before she says anything that Rei can use against your argument. Asuka just seethes quietly as you explain the logic behind your decision. Rei's expression doesn't change as you explain. Her response is…not what you'd hoped. Ordinarily, when Rei agrees with you, she nods at you and concedes that you know better. This time, she just says, "I see," and begins glaring at Asuka, who glares back at her. This is going to take some time to get her to accept.

Shinji, the poor thing, doesn't really have any specific complaints but clearly seems uncomfortable with the tension in the room. He offers to live by himself in this apartment if it'd fix anything, or to live with Asuka instead, but Rei tells him that will not be necessary. Shinji meekly says okay and falls silent. Asuka snorts derisively. You're not happy Rei's taking this so personally, but you're a little pleased she considers Shinji close enough to be reluctant to live separately from him.

You conclude by saying that there will be a door between the two apartments soon, which will always be open. Rei seems mollified by this somewhat, but the tension is still clear in the air. You'll have to deal with it over the coming weeks. You have your work cut out for you.

You spend the next couple of days helping Asuka unpack her numerous possessions. She brought everything she owns with her, it seems. Unlike Rei, she requires dozens of boxes to contain her stuff. Most of it is clothes and magazines, unsurprisingly. Her wardrobe is at least four times the size of yours. Nothing unusual really sticks out to you, except her surprisingly extensive collection of physical music, which contains a worrying amount of industrial rock music for a teenage girl. She seems embarrassed about the amount of Nine Inch Nails CDs she owns and shoos you out of the room to unpack these herself.

The Public Relations branch contacts you a few days later to inform you that they've created their first piece of Evangelion merchandise. It's not what you expect.

Rei apparently approved of it, though. You begin wondering if you've made a mistake. They'll be contacting the others soon.

[ ] Combat training

Special Activity

You may do one special activity of your choosing each week. It won't raise Rei's stats, but you can use it to bond with her, affect her mood, or solve her problems. Additionally, you can also use this slot to pursue your own projects, if any. This is not controlled by majority vote. The QM will merely choose the most entertaining one. Note that this activity does not have to include the pilots.

Hell fucking yes sell all of the Rei Plushies!

Conversation:
Asuka:
[X] School
Let's see if we can't make sure she understands she might need to go to school to socialise, not because she has to actually study.

Rei:
[X] Home
Tying into the Special Activity.

Shinji:
[X] The Present
Specifically, what did he get up to while the two of you were away? And what does he make of Asuka?

Activities:

For all three:
[X] Combat Training
I want all three doing this so they learn to work together. Unlikely, but I live in hope.
[X] Go out/Free Time
Let's get them bonding socially too. With the caveat they don't have to spend all their free time together.

[X] Special Activity: Get that fucking door put in and make it clear that they're not two separate apartments, just one big one. Take the entire damn wall out if you have to.
Yeah, I am not happy with Rei's reaction. Good reasons, temporary problem, but we're making sure it stays temporary.

Asuka: [X ] General well-being
Big move to another country, first successful angel kill, getting a tongue lashing for playing spy, a lot of things have happened, lets see how Asuka is dealing with it all.

Rei: [X] Home
Lets get some quiet time with our bluebird and make sure she understands that we are in no way choosing Asuka over her, and will always be there for her.

Shinji: [X] Home
Same as before, the family/home is going through some changes, make sure that he knows that we are not abandoning him either (always helps to say it) and how does he feels about said changes.

For all three:
[X] Combat Training
Completely Agree with VX on this, need to get the three of them working together as a unit (patchwork or not) as soon as possible.

[X] Go out/Free Time
Agreed with this also, get Asuka more familiar with her surroundings, and Shinji and Rei to spend time with their friends, or hopefully spend some time together(a frog can dream)

[X] Special Activity: See about spending a evening/night out with our dear BFF Ritsuko, doing something fun(preferably not getting drunk) been awhile since we last went out and now we have another kid to look after which is something to talk(complain ) about, see how life has been treating her.

[X] special activities: 4 movie nights where everyone gets to pick something for a night.

This idea feels like it would be a hilarious disaster. That's why we should go for it.

I love this Idea. Perhaps we can push this into a "Have movie night or whatever while they take the wall out/make a open floor plan combining the apartments"? Beyond that it may take time.

Let's nip this problem in the bud.

Did we ever mention to Rei that the reason that penguins don't enjoy being squeezed is that the way birds lungs work means excessive compression quickly stops them from breathing, even more so than animals with tidal lungs?

On one side, the party wall of Misato's apartment is the back wall of the master bedroom.

On the other, it's the side wall of the second bedroom and the box room, and the end wall of the stub corridor connecting them to the lounge.

Here's the evageeks article with the floorplan:

Is this true? I figured we just intended to make a big open hallway where the door way would have been. Is there a diagram or something? Obviously we can't do that if so but I just wanted to know the providence of this knowledge.

See edit to my post.

The floor plans were published in Newtype magazine.

Going by the plans, we might be able to knock out the top wall in Misato's current room or the left side of the kitchen? There's a veranda to the right, and Asuka's room has windows. The apartment's likely to the top or left; given how the apartments are laid out, it's unlikely they're identical, so I can't predict where we'd be knocking in to, if that makes sense.

That or we do some interior re-arrangement to make it work; IIRC some of the doors at least are paper, and we're knocking a wall down anyway...

They are putting the door in, it'll be later this week unless you're suggesting Misato do it herself..
Well I was thinking we would have the people putting the door in just make more of an open plan situation since we don't have an 'talk to other people' option that isn't our special action but uh, if @Sutekh Takes that magazine as truth then we can just put the doorway in.

[X] Special Activity: Think about the situation with Kaji. You don't want to talk to him (no, definitely not, nope, not thinking about it) but... You should probably find out if you're going to be seeing more of him. You doubt it will be up to you if he sticks around.

I really think we need an adult ally who isn't Ritsuko. If Kaji is around and given how he does care for us, even if he just gives an addition action every other turn/some assists/morale boost if we can hash out at least a portion of our issues with him then it would be very helpful.

Good, gooooood. It's all coming together.

Soon we will have in-universe body pillows of the pilots. And Shinji body pillows will outsell Asuka's, making her incredibly jelly.

I'm guessing that's an Impossible burger with fake cheese, since we've established that she's vegetarian and lactose intolerant.
