Let's open the window first!
She seriously needs to get over herself. Everyone's had it rough. He's been patient with her, but he's getting fed up with how she acts like the only person in the world with problems.
Well, somebody should say this to her finally. Especially to Asuka in canon.
Rei's art has become increasingly abstract as of late; in addition to her usual empty urban landscapes and paintings of snow, she's been adding art of vague figures and shapes you'd classify as expressionist.
Well, I thought Rei will become new Salvador Dalí. It looks that she will become a new Edvard Munch.
Asuka suggests Ritsuko should consider making simulations for combat against conventional artillery as well, an idea both you and Ritsuko find unsettling. Asuka easily reads your expression and says it doesn't hurt to be prepared. It'd make for a nice change of pace, too.
I am inclined to agree with her.
You ask if Ritsuko knows anything about Asuka's claims about Rei. Ritsuko shakes her head. Asuka's acting paranoid. She knows something. About Rei. Ritsuko is leaving it to your discretion to deal with it.
Well, Eva will go out from the bag anyway when Rei will tell the other pilots about her nature. So ironically, it is not something we should worry about now.

[X] Tell her not to leave anything out. You'll handle it if one of the others gets upset.
-[X] Remind Rei that you are accepting her, even while you know all of this already. Other pilots will too.

[X] Tell Shinji first. Asuka can wait.
-[X] Remind Rei that she can't be worried about him hating her, while her avoiding Shinji in reality makes him think that she hates him

We have to tell everything, that has been the point of this. Leaving anything will create a potential for disasters in the future, maybe even worse because other pilots could consider Rei duplicitous. Pretending to be honest, while hiding the parts anyway.

Telling them both at the same time is asking for the trouble because it can simply become one big free for all argument with screaming, and maybe even violence. Also the info about Yui will be especially pertinent for Shinji, so it is better to keep it contained.

Edit:
Ok, let's try the different approach. A bit more gamble, but the result may be a better one.

[X] Tell her to leave out the part about Yui Ikari.
-[X] Remind Rei that you are accepting her, even while you know all of this already. Other pilots will too.
-[X] Make sure that you have a separate talk with Rei and Shinji exactly about Yui Ikari stuff

Genuinely love the "talk to Asuka" thing becoming a "Misato ruminates on herself" action.

So I suspect this is a bad idea that will cause an explosion. However - we've been building for an explosion for a while, and doing it this way at least has us in the room when it happens. Hopefully that'll be enough, and hopefully we'll have time afterwards to deal with the crater before the next Angel shows up.

...did we ever tell Kaji about this?

If she holds back and it comes out later it will only make the situation worse. Relationships built on half-truths and deception will never stand the test of time. Just get it over with already and let the chips fall where they may.

You knock on Rei's door. No answer. You know she's in there. You knock again and tell her you need to talk. Sympathetically at first, but when that doesn't work, more insistently. You try bribery. This produces no response, so you have to resort to a few mild threats of further discipline. This manages to get Rei's attention.
I hope Misato follows through on the bribery.

Apart from that, her hair is slightly messier than usual, but she doesn't look sickly or unclean or anything like that. There are, however, noticeable dark circles under her eyes. She has not been sleeping well.

Her room is a mess of unwashed painting materials and scattered graphite sketches, many of them smeared badly. You can't tell what most of them are supposed to be, though some vaguely resemble her face, maybe. The lights are off and the curtains are drawn. The air is a little stale.
I'm getting strong "could a depressed person make this" energy from Rei today.

You ask him how things are going with Rei. Shinji shrugs at you. He's still not sure about asking her out. He doesn't know what to do to be a good boyfriend to her, assuming she says yes, which he's still not convinced she would, by the way.
Clearly, this conversation takes place before Rei reveals her deal to him. I feel like his response would focus more on that if he knew. Even if she doesn't mention the whole "half-clone of your mom" thing.

I notice that we've asked Shinji about this two weeks in a row. Let's lay off this for a bit. If we really wanna ship them, let's talk to Rei instead.

You don't know how she can think at the volumes she chooses to play her music. Maybe that's the point.

Asuka, you're being ridiculous. If the JSSDF prepared to fight you guys, they'd bring a lot more than just artillery. Artillery is only useful in a combined-arms force; at the very least, they'd have tanks and mechanized infantry to keep you guys from running up and smashing the artillery.

As for Asuka's suggestion for new exercises, she'll relay it up the chain. Asuka's right. Obviously, any evidence that NERV is considering training exercises against a potential human military threat is to be kept secret. You're more worried that none of your other pilots are going to be willing to practice killing human targets. Shinji would reflexively refuse, Hikari is probably traumatized by the deaths she's already caused, and Rei seems reluctant to even kill Angels, let alone people. You're not convinced Asuka's processing killing dozens of soldiers well, either.
NERV needs to find a therapist with security clearance two weeks ago.

For the most part, each pilot sticks to their hobbies and routines: Rei remains in her room to paint, Shinji practices his cello, Asuka watches TV, and Hikari chooses to spend her free time with the Suzuhara siblings.
I wonder what the Horaki siblings think about that.
It's probably our fault somehow.

I don't think so, but let's leave him out of this. He's not likely to take this discovery (and Misato still wanting to treat Rei like a human kid) well, and Asuka would take that as an excuse to take it even less well, and Misato can only deal with detonating so many latent crises in one week.

[X] Tell her to leave out the part about Yui Ikari.
Easily the least important part. If it ever matters, Rei or Misato can explain that later.

[X] Tell them both at the same time. Get it over with.
Solark and that guy have good points.

[X] Tell her to leave out the part about Yui Ikari

You know, let's leave that massively creepy fact for a more private Rei and Shinji moment...

[X] Tell them both at the same time. Get it over with.

I would've preferred to test the water with Shinji alone but Asuka is way too paranoid right now, we can't risk her snooping on that and fuelling her resentment

Which would be worse: Asuka overhearing the conversation, or Shinji panicking and blabbing to Asuka?

I vote the latter; the former at least lets Asuka hear Rei describe her situation herself, leaving fewer blanks for Asuka's paranoia to fill. But to play Devil's Advocate, a panicky Shinji would provide more of an obstruction between Asuka and the Lying Angel.

My opposition to revealing the Yui thing is mostly because Asuka is there (and she should be.) We already know/expect she's not going to take any of this well, and I feel like there's a better than good chance she would use the information cruelly in the moment knowing about the crushes the two have.

It's also, IMO, the least important piece of information to reveal now.

The worst way to reveal that Rei is a half-clone of Shinji's mom is when Asuka is in the room and looking for a way to lash out at the lying angel.

The second-worst way to is Misato getting really drunk at Shinji and Rei's wedding reception. We should bring it up before then.

I suggest we encourage Misato to quit drinking.
Probably! But we should also tell Shinji about the Yui thing later. That doesn't break the top 10 worst ways for Shinji to learn, even if we exclude the ones where Misato gets drunk/high.

(It probably reaches the top 10 if we exclude ones where Rei or Gendo get drunk/high, but only because there aren't many meaningfully distinct situations where Shinji could discover the connection between Rei and Yui without mind-altering substances.)

Personal Matters VI: Personal Matters
[X] Tell them both at the same time. Get it over with.
[X] Tell her to leave out the part about Yui Ikari.

Rei dips her head, perhaps disappointed you haven't inexplicably decided to call the entire thing off, but she nods slowly. Okay. She'll…try. She's not very good at using her words.

Later in the week, it finally happens. After dinner, Rei stops Asuka from retreating to her bedroom and says there's something she has to tell her. Asuka folds her arms and tilts her chin up. Oh, really? Do tell. You sigh and grab a beer from the fridge. Rei moves to the living room and gets Shinji's attention. You follow them and settle in on the couch, eyeing your charges warily. You have no idea how they're going to react. Pen2 watches from the door of the kitchen.

Shinji gives you a bewildered look, looking back and forth between you, Rei, and Asuka. He seems confused about why Asuka is there. It seems all your talk of romance might have primed him to think Rei's big secret involved her romantic interest in him. Oops. Asuka looks like she wants to punch Rei already. Rei opens her mouth to speak and closes it several times. Asuka says out with it already. Asuka doesn't have all night to wait around.

Rei gives Asuka an intense look. Asuka's scowl deepens, and her eye twitches with annoyance. What, is there some kind of problem with what she said? Rei doesn't say anything. She balls her fists, and she begins.

As instructed, she glosses over the reason for her existence, Yui Ikari, and begins with the fact that she is the eleventh member of the Rei Ayanami series. That she is a clone. Asuka reacts with confusion, and Shinji with alarm. He begins to bombard Rei with questions. Human cloning is possible? Is she one of those clones that has an expiration date like in sci-fi movies? What happened to the first ten Rei Ayanamis? Doesn't she have a bellybutton? Rei turns her intense gaze to Shinji and answers his questions tersely. Yes, no, they died, yes.

Asuka blinks a few times and asks why Rei exists at all. Are there clones of Shinji and Asuka too? Underneath her abrasive tone there is a hint of panic. Rei says NERV needed to ensure it always had a pilot. And that it needed a vessel. Rei also explains that her body exists as parts for the Dummy System. Asuka and Shinji are unique. Asuka says well of course she is. The world's not big enough for two of her anyway. You take a sip of your beer and try not to roll your eyes.

The smug expression fades off Asuka's face when she realizes that this means the Dummy System wasn't just Rei's mental scans. It was Rei herself. Which means that it was her that did that to Unit-02 last battle. Asuka closes the distance between herself and Rei instantly. Rei stands her ground. Another Rei, without a real consciousness to speak of, did that to her, yes. It was killed when the Dummy System was aborted by Dr. Akagi. All uses of the Dummy System end with the destruction of the clone. The clone itself is largely reduced to a nervous system kept on life support when put into the Plug anyway. They are not the same thing as Rei is.

Shinji says that's horrible. Rei doesn't say anything at all.

Asuka says it doesn't matter. It's still Rei's mind that did it, isn't it? Rei remains silent.

Shinji breaks the silence by asking about the vessel thing she mentioned. You drink more generously.

Rei looks at you. You nod. She turns her attention back to Asuka, almost glaring at her. Asuka glares back.

Rei explains that her body is a vessel for the soul of Lilith, the Second Angel. Her body isn't fully human. She's an Angel-human hybrid. Her voice quavers just a little bit. She assures you all that she poses no existential threat—

Asuka shouts that she fucking knew it. She turns her attention to Shinji, who shrinks under her withering glare. She fucking told him so. And he didn't believe her! He called her crazy! Shinji looks around and stammers that look, he's really sorry, it's just—

Asuka doesn't care about whatever stupid excuses he has. Get on his knees and apologize to her, right now. Shinji complies readily. Asuka says good. She'll think of some suitable punishment for him later. She turns her attention back to Rei. As for her.

Asuka grabs her by the top of her head and drags her to the floor by her hair, forcing her into a dogeza position. Rei yelps in pain as her head bangs into the floor. You start from your chair and move to intervene. Asuka tells you to stay back. You don't understand what Rei did to her.

Shinji throws himself at Asuka. She responds by giving him a wicked kick, knocking him off his feet. He pants heavily, winded. Pathetic, she spits at Shinji, and he calls himself a soldier. She places her foot on Rei's back, forcing her into the floor. Say you're sorry, Asuka snarls. Rei doesn't. Asuka puts more of her weight on her, making Rei grunt in pain. She repeats herself more forcefully. You move in, shouting at Asuka to get off of Rei. What's wrong with her? Asuka shoves you away with considerable force, nearly knocking you over. Asuka's not moving until Rei apologizes to her. She'll fight you for it. She sounds hysterical.

You demand an explanation. Asuka gives it to you, relaying what happened to her while you were away in Matsushiro. How her work with Fuyutsuki made her suspicious of Rei, how she tested Rei's DNA and received a positive identification as Lilith, how she confronted Rei about it, how Rei not only lied to her but tried to make her feel insane, how she threatened to have her psychologically examined by Ritsuko, how she poisoned Shinji against Asuka by telling him that Asuka was losing it. She presses Rei further into the floor. There was a point where Asuka began actually doubting herself. Asuka wants an apology, now. Then the three of you can figure out what to do about the Second Angel.

What will you do?

Asuka needs to let Rei up. Rei needs to tell us if what Asuka is saying is true. If it is, then she deserves an apology. That, however, is not an excuse for treating Rei like a footstool.

I think at least some portion of the plan should involve having Rei apologize to Rei. While Asuka's actions here aren't great, what Rei did was shitty and something Asuka does deserve an apology for. I think doing so may make it easier to resolve this situation in a couple ways.

A good way to go about it could be something like: Confirm what Rei did, have her apologize, and then tell Asuka to release Rei so we can finish the discussion.

Rei answered "no" about clones expiration date. Did she lie again, or does she feel confident about her current body?

I love how Shinji has no dignity whatsoever and just does what Asuka tells him. Ouch, hope the wicked kick wasn't to the balls.

To be fair, actually forcing someone to the floor with one foot is impossible: the one on the floor has 4 points of contact and all the strongest muscles in their body working against a fraction of opponent's weight who only becomes more unstable the more pressure they try to exert. Is Rei being passive again, letting Asuka do what she wants? Maye letting it play out is one way of handling it.

That said, Asuka's violence is getting out of hand and she's now challenging Misato. I hope Misato is still her match.

[X] Immediately subdue Asuka (just not with a choke please, just some kind of standing arm lock submission on her good arm, law enforcement style), make it clear you won't tolerate violence here, and separately explain she can't get a sincere apology by force. Let Rei explain herself and apologize if she wants to.

That seems likely to get Asuka snapping. Rei does need to apologize in here somewhere, for fucking with Asukas head in her panic. But Asuka also needs to own up to the privacy violation.

This wasn't just Reis secret after all, this was a NERV secret. All of us could end up taking a bullet just for knowing.

This is going about as well as I expected. Now to get the proverbial donkey back down the tower...

[X] Write-in: Give it a second, just to see if Rei says anything. If she doesn't, tell Asuka to let her up so she can talk. Lean on that time in the Army. If she doesn't, separate the two using the minimal amount of force you can.
-[X] If Rei then talks, let her speak. If not, tell Asuka that yes, she is right to be upset about this, and you're all here to talk this out. You won't let your wards hurt each other.

Not entirely sure if I should add something after that, but I also don't want it to be entirely Misato talking this down - and I really don't want Misato to come across too much as siding with Rei. I also want to give Rei that initial opportunity to talk, while still stepping in if this continues. Overall I'm not 100% happy with this yet.
