[X] Follow them in secret.

Damn the regrets that come after, the sins of Gendo Ikari must come to light. I can already hear his stupid voice saying it's a childish thing to do like he did before. Like he knows anything about kids. Doesn't even know a thing about his own.

I really hate that guy, I usually don't get that worked up.

At least it's clear Ritsuko isn't exactly dying to do this, considering her delay when asked to wait and her lack of expression here.
Well, you may be onto something.
  • Rei obviously has fallen from Gendo's grace here.
  • Both Ritsuko and Gendo had to notice that Rei has shown much more affection towards Misato/Shinji than Gendo lately.
  • Considering above, maybe Ritsuko can stop perceiving Rei as competition for Gendo's feelings, and we can get her help.
  • But Ritsuko's friendship is not worth, if we have to allow Rei III
But all of this is one big "maybe" in this shitstorm.
According to all the laws of the genre, we must do something that brings us closer to the secret, but we will probably regret it for the rest of our lives.
This is NGE, let's hope we can manage this better than it happened in the canon.

Okay so a bit of an Evangelion not-knower here, but if the thing is cloning and they're going to euthanise this clone (sick fucks what), could it be possible that we'll end up just kidnapping this one to live as a normal girl, with a wig/hair dye.

Gendo will obviously find out if we do this, but does decanting a new clone necessitate killing the former? Is it like a destructive brain scan, because if so then again wow that is fucked up. Because if not surely he won't have too big of an issue just decanting Rei 3 while we take Rei 2 (who is being euthanised for being below par? Or because she's too damaged to pilot?) home.

You can't have multiple Reis.
In Evangelion "soul" is not a vague metaphysical concept, but a real, researched thing.
Rei is an artificial creation (a clone is not a fully accurate term, I think), made using remainings of Yui Ikari's DNA and Lilith's (the big bleeding thing crucified in Terminal Dogma). Exact ratio has never been revealed.
In Terminal Dogma there is a huge tank (called Reiquarium by fans) with mindless/souless bodies which are used as spares. If the current Rei dies, her soul transfers into one of those, with some memories lost. But the new Rei is not the same person as the one killed.
Because of that, Rei claims that she can be replaced (which technically is true).
Rei I (around age seven or something) was killed by Naoko Akagi (Ritsuko's mother), because she considered Rei as a competition for Gendo's feelings (sounds familiar?).
Rei II (the one we met in canon) was killed in Armisael fight, and did not remember much after reviving as Rei III.
Ritsuko showed Reiquarium in canon to Shinji (which traumatized him), and destroyed spares, before having a nervous breakdown. All of this because she hated Rei.

Whelp that was possible the most pointless not killing Gendo... Wait was that the fuckin plan Sutekh? We're we just supposed to wait 2 chapters until we found more reasons to murder him?

Oh god, they're going to euthanise our daughter.

If they kill our kid we're having shinji throw Gendo into the sun

I'm voting to follow them, but I don't actually know what the fuck we're actually going to do if Gendo has ordered Rei II to be euthanized and replaced with Rei III.

...is there a reason not to? Like, sure, not clear what we're going to do, but at least we might have the opportunity. And if we don't, well, now Misato knows and can take revenge.

You can't have multiple Rei's.

So, building on this a bit - you can't have multiple of the same Rei. Rebuild has instances of multiple Reis Ayanami who don't share the memories of the original while the original is still around, though Sutekh's not really using that interpretation for this quest. Rei III in NGE/EoE also seems to eventually inherit the feelings II had for Shinji, otherwise the ending wouldn't have happened the way it did - though how far this extends is, like a lot of things in Eva, deliberately unclear.

EDIT: And to answer the original question, decanting Rei III may or may not require Rei II's death, but having Rei III be able to do her job certainly does.

We really screwed up letting Rei finish off that last Angel, didn't we. If we had told Shinji to do it, she might have lived with all her memories until the end of the quest.

Well, it all depends on the interpretation. Do you consider Rei III as the same person who has just recovered her own memories, or as a different person who has been imprinted/influenced by memories of somebody else?
It is something like Theseus's Paradox.

But for Rei-In-Universe perspective, those musings are irrelevant. In the weeks she has spent under Misato's care, it's the first time in her life, when Rei has been truly happy.
Rei is scared because she knows that, even if Rei III is the same person as Rei II:
  1. She will lose all happy memories, and bonds she has created with other people
  2. She will completely forget her current feelings/affections
  3. And she will become again Gendo's perfect obedient doll

Yeah, it's one of those left to intepretation, and while you can play it either way for a particular story it's not especially relevant here. OOC we have to assume the worst-case scenario (dead is dead) and even if it's not, I'd rather not put the kid through that particular experience.

I hate that my first thought was actually 'make Gendo swallow razor blades if he plans on killing Rei' I recognize that such is a bad and unhealthy thought though.

Judging by how EoE went...she might not, actually.

To elaborate on this: what can we do? Threaten Ritsuko? Threaten Gendo? Go on a one-woman war against NERV? Grab Rei and abscond with her - to where? None of the available options get us very far in my head.

Most likely Gendo's gonna have a gun(Knock him down form the behind and take the gun)... Actually Misato should have one. The plan will basically be put a hole in Gendo and probably Rits's head at this poin. If they try to do that.

This is a problem, yes. In the short term, no idea if Misato is armed, but if she is that helps a bit; if it comes to a fistfight then all bets are off - too many variables. Good chance against Ritsuko, Gendo's an unknown, what Rei would do in that situation is also unknown... Medium term, assuming things go hot, if we can get Rei to Unit 00 then that's a pretty materially-unstoppable force right there. At that point, things are going to get spicier than they already are.

Thing is, this is all entirely speculation. Can't make plans, so to speak, though laying out what's possible to do is still vaguely useful.

It's nice to fantasize about righteously putting a cap in Gendo's ass, but what happens after Misato murders the leader of NERV? Besides her being thrown into a cell by the NERV security forces, and possibly thrown to the Japanese government and military (who we are absolutely enemies of at this point) as a sacrificial lamb?

How is Misato to kill Gendo without being imprisoned or executed in turn?

I think we can safely assume that she is armed. In the canon, she was always armed when at NERV. But I have no clue if this would make any difference.
I am reasonably certain that if the Follow option wins, there is a high chance that Misato will be killed as well.
Then you may begin to make some funeral arrangements already, I suppose.

Maybe. Or maybe not.
I doubt anybody except Gendo wants to risk checking this theory.

On the other hand, what can Ritsuko do? Even Gendo himself would have a problem to outright eliminate Misato now.
She is too high profile, and he has nobody competent to replace her with.
Also, it may be a good opportunity for all proponents of mending fences with Ritsuko.
Ritsuko looks somewhat shaken by the recent events. And yes, I think on some level, Misato can threaten Ritsuko.
In absolutely the worst case scenario (pun not intended) with Rei III actually appearing, at least Misato will know the truth about Rei's nature.
