For my part, I feel that this quest has done a great job at conveying how difficult Misato is finding being a single parent, including finding balance with her highly demanding job.

It feels like a struggle because it is a struggle, even before the Angels get involved.

Misato's no dummy but it's kind of hard picturing her as a motivational speaker who always knows the exact right thing to say given the amount of personal issues she has to work through herself.
I don't know about you, but I'm much better at motivational speeches when I'm drunk and working through some shit :V

One of the things I appreciate about this quest is it always feels like we're a few steps behind on everything except what we're focussing on right this instant, which we're only behind one step on. There's always some fire that Misato (and by extension, the players (?)) need to put out, and when we've got a handle on it someone tosses a hand grenade into the room. Most of the time, we can even see them pulling the pin and winding up, but for one reason or another we either don't have the time to deal with it or just decide other things are more important.

See also: right the fuck now.
I do love games that do that.

I mean, in the moment it's frustrating as heck to feel like you don't have enough resources to handle everything and then get punished for leaving some things unhandled. But it's also satisfying to use what resources you have to handle enough things that you squeak by to the next disaster.

Do the people you try to motivate agree?

I plan on doing a sort of "director's commentary" on this quest after it's all over, and I do plan on talking about disasters you've averted (or at least made more manageable through your actions).

One example I am comfortable talking about is Plan Cover Your Ass. It was a very good plan that turned what I had planned to be an incredibly uncomfortable conversation where Misato is trying to come up with excuses under deep scrutiny from Gendo to one where Misato went in with a plan, felt reasonably confident, and managed to sidestep pretty much any question of her job competence. Granted, Gendo pulled the ol' switcheroo on you by focusing on a different set of pain points, but that conversation was way less stressful that I had planned it to be.

Good job everyone!

Ah, yes good old GM rule.
Never underestimate stupidity of the players during a RPG session. Been there, done that.
Both ends.
I have a friend that ran Tomb of Horrors (which is admittedly, incredibly bullshit, that's the appeal, so the players are warned) and the entire party walked into the sphere of annihilation right at the entrance without checking to see if it was there.

I can understand the first guy, but why didn't anyone stop after the first guy got sucked into the sphere?

Boiling Point XII: Battle in the Rain
[X] Go with Rei. It's certainly the most efficient way to get them to talk. And maybe Asuka will appreciate Rei is looking for her.
[X] Conciliatorily. Admit fault. Acknowledge Asuka does have a point, even if she wasn't very delicate or kind about making it, and try to make amends.
[X] Emotionally. Try to use Rei's emotional experiences to convince her how to best interact with Asuka. Guilt her if you must.

You tell Rei that she's coming with you to find Asuka. Rei stares at you as if you've sprouted a second head. She does not think that would be a very wise course of action. Too bad, Rei. Even if unintentionally, she started this mess, and she's going to help you fix it. That's an order. Rei reluctantly gets up from the table and goes to her room to change into clean clothes.

You tell Shinji to stay behind in case Asuka comes back and ask him politely to clean up the mess Asuka made. Shinji agrees without complaint. It's the least he can do. He feels like it's his fault Asuka got mad enough to leave the apartment.

Rei and you walk to your car in silence. It's starting to drizzle. Great, just what you need. Rei sits in the passenger seat with a pensive expression. You start the car and pull out of your parking space, and start a slow drive around the neighborhood, keeping your eyes peeled for any signs of your missing charge. You tell Rei to keep an eye out for her.

As you slowly roam the rainy streets of Tokyo-3, you decide now's as good a time as any to talk to Rei about how she speaks to other people. At first, Rei doesn't seem to understand what you mean. Rei insists she selected her words carefully. Sohryu reacts negatively to whatever Rei says, no matter how hard she tries. You try to sympathize with Rei, but it's frustrating. You tell her you understand that social interaction is difficult for her, but you really thought she would know a little better. You tell Rei to seriously consider how what she says affects the emotions of other people. You understand that Asuka is…volatile, but what Rei said was deeply insensitive, and obviously so. Rei asks why.

You explain that she dismissed Asuka, in some of the bluntest and harshest terms possible, for something Asuka cannot change about herself (her appearance). You ask her to think about times when other people shunned her for her own unusual appearance. Rei frowns. You imagine that they weren't nearly so upfront about their intentions to do so either. Imagine if Shinji or Hikari or yourself rejected Rei based on the color of her hair or skin or eyes. You tell her that she did that to Asuka when she turned down the offer to paint Asuka in the manner that she did.

You do your level best to explain Asuka's feelings of rejection in a way Rei can understand, drawing from Rei's own feelings of isolation and insecurity about herself. You explain that by avoiding interacting with Asuka, and by being so dismissive of Asuka's experiences, she is hurting Asuka. You explain that Asuka is the kind of person to try to hurt people whom she feels have hurt her, like a cornered animal. Does Rei remember how angry Shinji being injured in the last Angel encounter made her? Asuka feels that way when she herself is hurt.

Rei doesn't fully understand. She was only telling the truth. She was trying to be open, like you told her to. You tell her that part of being an adult and growing up is knowing how to be diplomatic. Rei has to choose her words and actions to accommodate the feelings of the other party, not just her own perspective. She needs to learn to consider how her actions appear from the limited and biased perspectives of other people, and to consider how the other party may react to what Rei does.

Rei says that sounds difficult. She's worried about losing her identity if she always does what Asuka wants. She does not want…to…go back to the way things were.

You tell her that the self is shaped by others. That is what it means to exist.

Rei, Asuka, Shinji and…that man…and so many others, have changed how you act, think and speak. But you're still you. You have not died because of it. It isn't so bad, Rei. And besides, she does not have to always accommodate Asuka. But she does need to make concessions to her in some way, or this will continue forever. And you know Rei does not want that.

Rei seems discouraged. She's not sure how to interact with Asuka without hurting her feelings. She feels…unhappy that her actions have hurt other people. You tell her it'd be best to apologize to her when she sees Asuka again. And not to worry, you plan to make Asuka apologize as well for her actions towards Rei tonight as well. Rei says it's okay. You do not have to.

You think you might have laid the guilt on a bit thick there. But Rei is doing some serious self-reflection, so you'll deal with that later. You're a little worried she'll overcorrect in the opposite direction, but you can keep making adjustments until the two of them manage to interact with each other without some kind of violence being a threat.

You enter the far side of town, near where Rei's old apartments are, when you spot her. She looks thoroughly miserable, and a little afraid. She's obviously lost, constantly looking over her shoulder and at her surroundings. She's hugging her arms to her chest. Her hair is damp and stuck to her face, and her clothes are soaked. You pull up next to her. She flinches and makes a combat stance before recognizing your vehicle. You ask if she needs a ride.

Asuka's face darkens with anger. What the hell are you doing here? And what the hell is she doing here?! She points at Rei accusatorily. Rei looks at her feet. You say you were looking for her. You were worried. Asuka says you're a liar. You don't care about her.

Rei gets out of the car. Asuka warily looks her up and down, balling her fists. Yes, what do you want, you useless Schwachkopf? Got anything else to say to Asuka about how she's beneath her or is Rei just going to stare at her gormlessly like a cow? Rei says she is sorry about the way she has treated Asuka.

Yeah, that's what Asuka thought she'd say—wait, what? Asuka looks genuinely floored. It takes her a few seconds to recover her composure. Yeah right. Misato, you just put her up to it, and you think that if you made Rei do a little puppet show for you she'd come crawling back, right? Well, Asuka's not that pathetic! She's not Shinji! She's…uh…

Rei says Asuka is clearly lost and in need of shelter and should get in the car. The weather will make her sick. Asuka tells Rei not to act like she's worried about her or something. Asuka knows Rei doesn't have feelings for anything other than herself. Rei again insists Asuka get in the car. Rei is concerned. Asuka contemptuously demands she prove it. Rei tilts her head thoughtfully. You start to interject, as this is not productive, but Rei walks over to Asuka and slaps her across the face.

Asuka slaps her back. Rei hits her again. Asuka retaliates. Rei returns the gesture. What the fuck, Rei?! Rei explains calmly that this is what Asuka does to show concern. She thinks. Asuka pauses for a moment, dumbfounded, before starting her assault again, tackling Rei. The two girls try to hit each other until you get out of the car to pull them apart. Rei has a serene expression on her face. Asuka mostly looks annoyed, but also incredibly confused. You order them to get in the car. The two drenched pilots comply. Asuka is too surprised to even argue back. Rei seems satisfied with herself for reasons you cannot even begin to comprehend.

Now what?

[ ] Write-in

[X] Give Asuka something to dry off with, make sure that the heater is on her.
-[X] Tell Asuka that despite what she thinks Misato does care deeply about her, she wouldn't have brought Asuka into her home, moved in with her, thrown her that welcome party at NERV and tried to get involved with her life if Misato didn't care.
-[X] Get Rei and Asuka to talk to one another, Asuka has already gone first, so Rei will go next, no more intermediaries, or half way points, these girls need to talk to one another to try to resolve all of this.

[X] Make sure the girls are dry and not going to get ill. Then, apologise to them both - Asuka first - and explain how you're not exactly prepared to raise any children, let alone three. Tell them that they need to work out a way of communicating that doesn't rub each other the wrong way; if need be, ask Rei if it's okay to tell Asuka about her complete lack of social education. Drive around until you all work at least a basic agreement out, then pick up something Shinji likes and go home.

Can we talk to him about this when we have the chance? He might have picked a bad time to say something, but i don't want Shinji to blame himself for our mess.

Ah, social skills. The bane of my existence. Can't seen to ever grasp them, can't just give up on learning them.
You get used to it eventually Rei.

Rei is concerned. Asuka contemptuously demands she prove it. Rei tilts her head thoughtfully. You start to interject, as this is not productive, but Rei walks over to Asuka and slaps her across the face.
... Wut.

Okay, i guess that's... Progress?
Well, it's not like we would ever fix everything between them with this one conversation. Asuka's anger won't disappear that easily, and Rei needs more than one talk to learn how to properly communicate.

Not the worst outcome by a long shot. A state of confusion isn't one of anger, and hopefully Asuka will actually listen to Misato and Rei.

Also, Rei coming to the conclusion that Asuka's love language(?) is violence was pretty funny.

Going to steal bits of Lock93's and Mechasaurian's write-ins.

EDIT: making sure both girls are dry.

Alright, fight it out kids. Get it out of your system. Props for doing it in the rain too, 7/10.

Better to give Asuka our own metaphorical slap now that we have the chance. She really needs proof of this caliber to reconsider her own imagined impression of Rei's personality and motivations.

Is Rei slapping people going to become a common thing?

I like this plan, but could you add making sure Rei also gets dry? She and Asuka fought in the rain for some time, so i think she is also pretty wet.

Thanks!
