The battle against Lavos was a battle that took place all across time.

Inside of the shell, they found a massive suit. Something disgustingly organic yet metallic. Something that held within it the genetic data, according to Robo's sensors, of everything that had lived upon the Earth.

From within its sanctum, Lavos had... directed the world's evolution. Man and monster alike had been cultivated, pushed to fight and grow and die so that Lavos could grow ever more powerful.

It was... hideous.

It was just another shell.

With their power's combined, they were able to break through it, too. Revealing the malformed, alien existence within. It was a difficult thing to describe. A sickly, pale creature inside of a life-support suit with thick, trunk-like limbs that terminated in broad, three-fingered hands.

Except that hadn't been the true Lavos. The true Lavos had been a fleshy pod, some hideous cross between a polyp, a barnacle and an acorn that used the aforementioned body as a decoy.

The battle literally took place across time, the inside of the Lavos shell shifting backwards and forwards, seemingly at random as Lavos condensed and distilled the strengths of each era against them.

Control Freak didn't know how many times his teammates fell. All he knew was that, between their magic and preparations, they kept getting back up. But, so too did the chunks of Lavos that were used as weapons against them as they struggled to kill the true heart of the monster.

But they managed it. They might have gone down time after time but they kept getting back up. And they got back up one more time than Lavos did.

When the thing died, finally, it felt as though time itself was screaming. Space warped within the corpse shell, twisting and undulating as Lavos tried to find a time where it wasn't being killed. Backwards and forwards, to the ancient past and the distant future until whatever well of energy Lavos had stolen was finally expended.

Everyone was struggling to crawl out when they were done. Control Freak had burned through his magic, then used Overheat with the final dregs he'd had left before he began slashing and stabbing whenever he had the chance. His newfound strength and speed had come in clutch more than a few times, distracting one of the Lavos bits from hitting his teammates.

And if he had to take a hit for one of them? Well, he could take it. He was tough.

Crawling out of the corpse of Lavos, Control Freak wasn't the first one out but he wasn't the last one, either. Ayla was at the front, regaining her energy faster than any of the rest of them.

The woman genuinely held the first and strongest element. Where Crono was lightning, Control Freak was fire, Frog was water and Magus was shadow?

Ayla was fist elemental.

Marle brought up the rear. Even after months of work, fighting and adventuring? She was still the most physically frail. Of the team.

Throw her against anyone else? Control Freak would bet on her, ten times out of ten.

It took a bit of time to recover but, once they did? They had to figure out what to do next.

They'd saved the world. They won.

Celebrating was a near-unanimous vote. The only naysayer had been Magus. He wanted to resume searching for his sister.

Control Freak... suspected she wasn't just gone. She was Gone. There hadn't been so much as a whisper of her name in any of the eras they'd traveled to. Not the present. Not the future.

And Control Freak had checked, alright? He'd thought... if Magus had ended up in 600 A.D., Melchior near 1000 A.D., and Batlhasar in 2300 A.D.? Maybe Schala had arrived in 1999 A.D., the year Lavos awoke.

But, if she did? She didn't appear in any of the computer files Control Freak had been able to access in 2300 A.D. He didn't know where else she could be, but...

He didn't think Magus was going to find her.

Eventually, the party decided to co-opt the Millennial Fair in 1000 A.D. The other people wouldn't know why Crono and the rest were celebrating a little extra hard, and that was fine. They'd earned it.

They all earned it.

Control Freak... almost didn't want to leave. His friends, and he still couldn't believe he actually had friends, were all just... amazing people. He knew they were. He'd fought right beside them. He'd helped them, and they'd helped him.

But he knew what a credit sequence felt like. Soon enough, the world would go dark and his connection would break, whether he wanted it to or not. Pulling out his Master Remote, Control Freak pressed the button that would see him free...

And he reappeared, surrounded in an electric haze, in the room with the man that had been watching along the entire time.

"Control Freak," the man greeted as he stood up from the couch he'd been sitting on, his yellow eyes gleaming with...

Control Freak lunged forward, his fist swinging wide in a haymaker as he slammed it right into the guy's face!

"Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow!" Then howled in pain as his fist impacted something that felt like a rock!

"...Randal," the man said, using Control Freak's actual name.

"...What?" Control Freak asked with a pained hiss as he held his throbbing hand.

He hadn't even caused the guy's face to turn!

"Did you think you were done?" the guy asked as he jerked his head towards the television with a harsh twitch.

"What do you mean?" Control Freak asked.

"Your friends," the guy- and Control Freak really needed to ask who the hell he even was, told him. "They still need your help."

"The story is over," Control Freak told him. "It's done. I can either leave on my own or I get kicked out, alright?"

"...Crono, Marle and Lucca will die within the next few years, Randal," the guy explained, freezing Control Freak's heart in his chest. "Magus will have his memories erased and Robo will be cannibalized to feed a shade of Lavos. Does that sound 'Done' to you?"

"...What?" Control Freak asked, his voice faint. "That-that-that... I..."

"Come on," the man said as he held his hand out towards Control Freak. "You've already accomplished the impossible. Let's go, and do one more."

Control Freak's mouth thinned to a line but the urgency that he'd been spoken at with...

He grabbed the man's hand and pressed the button on his remote, drawing the both of them into the television screen...

And reappearing at Lucca's telepods where the team was starting to head back to their own time periods.

[Lucca]
"Control Freak? We were worried you wouldn't make it!"

[Marle]
"Where'd you go? You nearly missed seeing everyone off?"

[Robo]
"...Who is that with you? His readings are... *ERROR!*"

[@**&@%$#%]
"I apologize for interrupting this lovely moment. But I have some very bad news."

Control Freak nearly fell over, nausea overtaking him as he tried to process the sound that had just rammed itself directly into his brain. It looked like he was hardly alone, either, as Crono, Marle, Magus, Ayla, Robo and Frog all just about collapsed.

[@**&@%$#%]
"Well. That's... new. I'll try and keep this brief, then- Lavos is dead, but not gone. And it will return."

[Crono]
"But we... won?"

Control Freak struggled up to his feet as the guy, the @**&@%$#% walked past the group and towards the spot where the Gate would open. The man snapped his fingers, just once...

And the Gate opened by itself. No key, no Epoch, no technology.

Just a snap of this guy's fingers.

[@**&@%$#%]
"Well, hurry up if you're coming. Lavos, and Schala, will not wait forever."

[Magus]
"Schala...?"

Magus was the second to struggle up to his feet. He hobbled forward, angling for the Gate that @**&@%$#% had opened.

Control Freak sidled up next to the demon lord, wrapping one of his massive arms around his companions shoulders to support him as they both moved to follow the unknown man.

They were not alone, however. Ayla was quick to support Lucca, and Frog soon had Marle up as Crono walked towards the Gate. The man, the one that opened the Gate, simply stood within the border and waited for them. His gaze, yellow and slitted and inhuman, patiently slid from one warrior to the next as they joined him.

Once everyone was in the borders of the Gate, he snapped his fingers again and sealed it, beginning the transit. Control Freak expected it to be rough, he expected the Gate to struggle with all of them in it.

Instead? It was... smooth. Impossibly so. Even the Epoch felt turbulence as it traversed the seas of time.

[Lucca]
"...How are you doing this? How did you open the Gate by yourself?"

[@**&@%$#%]
"I may not be able to traverse the seas of time of my own initiative, but you'll find few that have mastered Teleportation magics to the degree I have. The hole was already here, as you know. I just used my own magics to open it and stabilize it."

Control Freak felt like he was getting used to the horrific wrongness in the man's voice because his splitting headache didn't get any worse, this time.

Dropping into the End of Time was expected. Doing so smoothly, with so large a group? It was actually a surprisingly pleasant experience.

[Gaspar]
"Oh? I don't think I recognize you..."

Beyond the door that led to Spekkio, a deep and horrific roar pierced the still air. A sound that was terrifying and familiar.

[@**&@%$#%]
"Don't mind me. I just need to borrow your bucket."

The bucket?

Control Freak looked down to the wooden bucket in the corner of the little platform Gaspar stood upon. Within which was a gate that led to the year 1999 A.D.

The Day of Lavos.

[Gaspar]
"...I don't think you want to do that, young man. That portal leads somewhere very-"

The guy snapped his fingers and the blue-white glow inside of the bucket turned bloody red.

[Gaspar]
"...My word. Is that-?"

[@**&@%$#%]
"Someplace cold, dark and lonely. The Darkness Beyond Time."

[Marle]
"The Darkness Beyond Time? They way you described that. It sounds... familiar. What is it?"

[Gaspar]
"A paradox. An impossibility. It is a non-space without time, a place where failed timelines and paradoxed existences go to die. You shouldn't be able to reach it because there shouldn't be anything there!"

[@**&@%$#%]
"Strange how that works, isn't it? Can you see beyond the Gate? Can you see who is trapped there, and by what?"

[Gaspar]
"...No. No, that- She shouldn't be there! Not..."

[@**&@%$#%]
"No, she shouldn't. And soon, she won't."

The guy- Control Freak really needed to ask his name. Because he definitely couldn't pronounce @**&@%$#%- snapped his fingers again and the Gate in the bucket began to expand. It was a crimson vortex, like the one that took Control Freak and Lucca to the moment in time where Lara was crippled.

There was a certainty to the group as they followed the man into the Gate.

What they found on the other side, however?

Lavos. The beast, horrifically twisted, appeared to be made of blood and obsidian. But, perhaps more horrifying, was what lay in a twisted heap atop the creature's spikes.

Flowing purple robes. Long blue hair. If not for the subtle motions of the woman's chest, Control Freak would have thought he was looking at a corpse...

[Magus]
"Schala!"

The woman's eyes fluttered open and her gaze, cold and broken, settled on the party.

[Schala]
"Let all that once was fade into Oblivion! I welcome the end of existence."

[Magus]
"No, Schala! Free yourself from its spell! Please... you must open your eyes!"

Magus rushed forward, drawing his scythe as he did so. He swiftly passed the man that had brought them here...

Who now wore a suit of black armor with a blue surcoat? And he had a sword at his side, sealed shut in black chains?

Control Freak didn't even see the man change!

The three-lipped maw of Lavos opened and power surged within. A purple light glowed, then darted directly towards Magus, slamming into the lord of fiends and throwing him back-

Control Freak caught him, propping his ally back up as @**&@%$#% continued his unhurried approach.

[Marle]
"Isn't that... Lavos? Why is Schala with it?"

[Robo]
"Offensive power... incalculable! We are in extreme-"

The chains on @**&@%$#%'s sword cracked open and the blade was unsheathed, drowning the non-space that they stood in with pure, murderous rage. The knight slid his black and silver blade free of the red case and held the bastard sword out with one hand, the tip pointing directly at the maw of Lavos.

Control Freak's knees trembled. He swallowed thickly and could not believe his eyes as he saw Lavos...

Flinch.

[Schala]
"What... what wickedness is this? What hatred exists that is so great, it dwarfs even the Dream Devourer?"

Lavos opened its maw and screamed, a sound that should have been familiar. A sound that should have been terrifying.

If it had not been a scream of soul-deep fear.

Light gathered in the creature's mouth, the same attack that had once killed Crono. But, even as it did so, @**&@%$#% pulled his blade back into a ready stance. Energy desperately ripped loose from Lavos...

And @**&@%$#% swung his blade, loosing a comparatively tiny arc of purple light. An arc of light that ripped through Lavos's own attack with contemptuous ease, carving apart the energy that once turned Crono into ash.

It cleaved through and struck Lavos...

And it kept going, carving into the impossibly thick, impenetrable hide of the wicked Star Spawn.

Chitin formed of dreamstone ripped apart, metal and blood filled the air...

And Lavos screamed.

Control Freak swallowed and drew his own blade, the [Suzaku], and dashed in.

Whatever the Dream Devourer was? Either Lavos or some nightmare from beyond time and space or whatever? It could bleed.

And it could die.

Fire and ice, lightning and shadows ripped across the battlefield. Magic twisted and shattered dimensions, gravity broke and time was twisted upon itself. Whenever one of their team would fall, the black knight would snap his fingers and brilliant white light would cover the battlefield, healing them and their allies both.

For a time, it seemed as though the battle would not end. At least, not until the black knight's horrific blade was coated in a sheen of Darkness to make Magus's [Dark Matter] seem bright. The knight swung his blade...

And five ethereal blue claws ripped up and through the Dream Devourer and Schala both! The claws clenched together, tearing something loose from both of them and drawing it into the Dark Knight.

[Schala]
"What... what have you done? My magic... I cannot feel my magic!"

[@**&@%$#%]
"Janus! Catch!"

With a snap of his fingers, Schala was ripped free of the insensate Dream Devourer's clutches...

And dropped directly on top of Magus.

With her out of the way, that seemed to be the signal that @**&@%$#% had been waiting for. A yellow sphere of power formed in front of the man, filled with magic the likes of which Control Freak had no frame of reference for. It shrank down, clearly fighting against being compressed, but was forced into a smaller and smaller form regardless.

And with each level it got smaller, more and more color was ripped out of the world.

Control Freak had thought the Dream Devourer immobile. It was absolutely massive and the teen couldn't see any sorts of legs or feet or whatever below it. But the giant thing tried to move back, tried to move away as @**&@%$#% grabbed the sphere in one hand and aimed it towards the broken, bleeding maw...

A thin beam of yellow light, edged in the black of uncreation, tore through the air. It slammed into the Dream Devourer and carved through it as though it offered no resistance at all. And it didn't stop. It kept going and going until, less than a second later, a massive explosion of chitin, blood and other fluids ripped out of the back of the Dream Devourer.

Control Freak felt manic laughter bubbling in his chest at the sight.

That thing, the manifested soul of Lavos... was dead.

Deader than dead. Even its efforts at clawing its way back from beyond the Dark of Time had been thwarted.

It was gone.

His friends were safe.

Schala was safe.

[Marle]
"...Is it over?"

[@**&@%$#%]
"Let's double-tap to be sure."

The Dark Knight snapped his fingers and tiny motes of red light danced over the shattered corpse. They jiggled in the air, once, then the air itself screamed as everything within a good fifty feet of each mote was simply unmade.

Control Freak wasn't the only one left staring at the sight of the Dream Devourer's corpse being erased from non-existence.

Everyone's spirits were high as they returned to the End of Time. Then, from there, they returned to Leene Square. Back to the moment of celebration from which they'd been distracted.

This time, Control Freak waited. This time, rather than avoiding the goodbyes, he saw his friends off as they went to the past or the future.

He didn't miss Lucca talking with @**&@%$#% to the side. Nor did he miss the package, long and thin, that he handed to the girl.

But his questions could wait, at least for a moment.

They'd done the impossible.

He'd done the impossible.

And he was going to savor every second of it that he could before it was over.

Hope that Control Freak ends up as part of the main cast. There is so much room for character growth still, his powers are fun, and he genuinely seems to want to improve himself. He isn't even fat anymore it seems. He is probably a muscular nerd now, like a Mall Ninja with a cool looking sword. But he could be molded into an even better person, someone who is a genuine hero, not just fighting for himself and his friends, but for strangers, for people he doesn't even know. I want to see if he can become capable of selfless good.

I don't know about a member of the main cast, but, like Tiffany, he'd make a pretty good Titan.

I am just ecstatic that Alchemist went and deleted the cause, and by extension, the timeline of Chrono Cross.
Now we never have to deal with that bullshit!

Randall doesn't really fit with Alchemist crew.
He was an entitled, lonely man that just experienced weeks (months?) of real training and adventure in order to save the world (minor) and the people who became his friends (major).

Alchemist cheats. A lot.
He bypasses a lot of the things other people would consider Requirements for power.

Control Freak got used to the reality and rules of Crono Trigger, and now he will need time to fit himself anew on TT, without his friends.

Control Freak, Randall, is not in a good headspace to get involved with Alchemist right now.

I think, if left to his own devices, he would research the means to visit his friends, before really trying to integrate with his birth reality. I think that Alec will try to introduce him, or drop him, with other heroes, to prevent relapse.

I also don't think Alec gets that CF got a lot more time in universe than just the game as it was experienced.

Thanks for writing

Thanks for the chapter! Very glad Al decided to step in and prevent Cross from happening.
Hopefully Randal continues to grow as a person, I can see him becoming a serious force for good of he goes that route.

The CT arc was a pleasure. This is the best mini arc in this universe so far. I now want to see CF bring his friends to his world and to read a fanfiction about the hero team they would create.

... Is it bad I kinda want CF to end up getting his own story/a tangent thing al occasionally stumbles upon (him learning to world jump, being able to visit his friends properly and visit other worlds/help as a jumper)

This... This was a fine arc (recaptured the peak enjoyment I felt when reading stuff like the worm snippets)

For a time, it seemed as though the battle would not end.
Alchemist could have ended that battle with the same mechanical result in ten seconds flat, without Haste or Standstill. But because he held off for a time, the entire party damn well earned that victory.

He enabled the attempt. He was essential to the success. But instead of marginalizing their achievements, he confirmed their strength (for many definitions of strength) and validated their efforts.

It made the difference between raucous celebration of exhausted, elated triumph, pride and relief and bonds of friendship forged stronger still. And a confused mix of emotions that includes doubt and bitterness.

For a man that has trouble understanding emotions, he certainly has no trouble acting on empathy.

Marle brought up the rear. Even after months of work, fighting and adventuring? She was still the most physically frail. Of the team.
I'm kind of surprised that Marle is the most physically frail. I would have thought Lucca, as when talking to the tutors, Marle tries to skip everything that isn't her gym teacher.

So where do you think CF lands on the power scale now, assuming no Master Remote? Is he physically an League assassin look with fire powers, or is he roughly Green Arrow level?

Also, this was a incredibly satisfying mini arc! It was incredible to find myself caring about a throwaway joke villain, and end up sad that his part in the main story is over. Thank you for this wild ride!

Have you seen that hammer she pulls out when things get too close? That's not a little 'Tink-Tink-Tinker' she's got there. It's a got-dang sledge!
Considering how briefly it shows, I always got the impression it was like, a croquet mallet.

Why Lucca would even have a croquet mallet, I don't know, but that's what it looked like to me.

Lucca is a mechanic, that means she handles a lot of metal panels, blacksmithing for parts, and a lot of spannerworks. She handles a gun so she has a lot of arm strength.
She's not as strong as Chrono or well rounded as the others, but she's far from weak.

I'm wondering what the package that Al gave to Lucca was.

Did he give her a katana made of Will?

Maybe of Death Metal?

It can't be the Chrono Cross itself, or the Frozen Flame; neither are shaped properly for that.
