If Panacea, Bonesaw or other such biotinkers used their powers on Alchemist to grant him a superhuman body would give it him more stats or would it increase the 'worth' of the stats?

I.E a Fairy and a Giant with 100 strength would lift different weights due to a muscle mass, size, ect.

Ordinary firearms aren't going to get you very far. Specifically, it will get you up to 2 on the PRT's threat scale.

Just looking at the Empire: fully half of their members (Fenja, Menja, Alabaster, Hookwolf, Krieg, and Fog) are functionally immune to small-arms, and half of the rest (Kaiser, Cricket, Stormtiger, Night) can use their powers to avoid gunfire. That leaves Othala (who can make someone bulletproof), Purity (moves well above 100mph and has a perpetual glare), Crusader (who wears armor and can "fire" from behind cover), Rune (who can turn anything around her into a floating shield), and Victor.
Your listing presumes a head to head confrontation but if you look at it as them being attacked from behind with out warning then only alabaster is functionally immune to gun fire

"The 🥧 Pieman," rather, as immortalized in the Simple Simon nursery rhyme Though he might be Simon himself? As far as legally admissable money goes at the moment, no, he has not any, after all ;)

he will be singing this when he wants to taunt an Empire Enemy

You said they were functionally immune to small-arms fire.

The only one immune to a bullet to the brain is Alabaster, and only then if it doesn't hit his brain tumors.

that may be easier than you think, bullets have rotational energy that is imparted upon the brain, a non-elastic organ, depending on how much damage is needed any hit to the brain might cause at least a temporary disconnection that would be enough

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFtQOxjWfaA

this is why no one uses lasers in real life, not because of energy or laws, but because bullets are just so super-effective against human beings

That scenario requires so many unaccounted-for qualifications and preconditions that it's really not plausible. I think it's far more presumptuous to assume a perfect sneak attack of that nature can be achieved.

so why has alec not tried using first aid on himself yet? i would have figured that at least for uses on himself first aid would work to regen his health faster

First Aid is the ability to successfully treat injuries to preserve life and prevent further complications.

So I really should give Alec a point for fixing his nose.

On the topic of Earth Bet, Parahumans and Guns-

One of the biggest reasons you don't have random people getting capped all the time isn't the fact that people don't bring guns. People get shot at pretty often in Worm and you'll find that the gangs are quick to draw on a suspected cape.

Rather, one of the biggest issues for people using guns is Uncertainty. Even a minor brute rating can confer resistance to small arms fire, if not functional immunity. One good example would actually be Bitch's dogs. In their transformed state, I wouldn't really give them any more than maybe a 2 in Brute and mover but that 2 is letting them soak bullets like sponges.

Now, Snipers are a bit of a different issue. According to Word of Bow, the Contessa actively interferes with attempts to snipe capes as it would interfere with her Army Against God plan. I'm fairly sure that a cape sniping another cape wouldn't be rube goldberg'd but normal people using normal guns might find themselves falling victim to any of a number of ironic or lethal forms of interference.

Fortuna likely wouldn't even be aware that she'd done something to stop the assassination, either. The odds of her being physically present at the culmination of a path are actually rather slim. So 'trapping' her by trying to predict and manipulate one of her Paths is unlikely to succeed. She does have a multitude of blind spots, either from hostile powers (Mama Mathers comes to mind) or else outright permissions problems (Mantellum) but she can sort of get around those by using imaginary stand ins. Even Eidolon, whom she cannot path due to the nature of his power, can still be predicted thanks to a working comprehension of his personality.

The Empire had 20 capes. The largest figure in Brockton Bay. They'd had the widest variety of skills.

Had...

Othala and Crusader were dead. And Victor just went AWOL. They were down 15% of their capes...

It's probably worse than that since Purity is probably off doing her "independent hero" thing where she went after the ABB and merchants on her own and Night and Fog went off to Boston cause they like her more than Kaiser. Of course Kaiser is pretty manipulative and could probably use Crusader's death to get her to come back given he did follow her when the empire split post levi and even joined her night and fog when they left the bay.

Being fair Hookwolf is probably functionally immune too cause even in human form he has metal under his skin.

Yep, it's Kaiser's POV, so this just shows how confident he is on his control of the others, even as they try to pull away or try and assert their independence.

I've long figured that the only semi-realistic anti-Contessa measure someone could take without having an outright power for it would be to set up some sort of unpredictable go-no-go system based on either Mantellum or a live news feed of Eidolon. Even then, it wouldn't protect you at all after the fact, so you'd have to pick your one shot well.

Well, luckily that's going to be rather difficult to do for Alec.
Even people who know him well, even Lucifer (who is all but omniscient in the truest sense), even Destiny himself, can't predict Al's actions.

I don't think a supercomputer with the IQ of a concussed kumquat will have a better time predicting Al's actions than Destiny of the Endless.

EDUT: and it's less likely to get blamed on the Patsy Victor already sent to the hospital about it, when Victor dies turn up dead.
If anything, this makes it more likely that Alec will be ambushed again. After all, he didn't give Max any leads, other than himself, as to where Victor went, so when Max wants to find Victor again, and he will, the only way he can do so is to track down Alec and get him to give up his "Fed friend" again.

That could in fact be part of the plan, thinking about it.

So, point. But he's have to find him. And it doesn't seem like Victor gave Anders Alec's na- ah. He did say he'd sent him to the holspital. Where Alchemist intends to go. Crud.

Hmm. There are decent odds he's be reluctant to gun on him. As far as he's concerned Alec's a patsy, but he could be bait (especially if Victor's unalived status comes to light). Also, he'd probably send in unpowered members, bc Alec does just seem like a patsy so far, and unlike how it is for Victor, it's not personal for Max.

And then what? Send more people towards him? With even less info? They have already proven they can handle 1 parahuman, and you can't just send a mass of mooks on long investigation missions, and he already lost capes, he isn't going to just bleed more of them

It's worth noting that snipers present their own issues if you're targeting villains. Just being in a position to take a shot at someone is logistically difficult since, unless you know who they are behind the mask, you're always going to be playing catchup. There also are, all things considered, not that many snipers out there.

Heroes would presumably be easier targets, since it's easier to predict where exactly they're going to be and set up an ambush, but there's a lot less incentive to actually shoot one of them. The rare few that are actually likely to make the attempt and succeed are probably relatively trivial for Contessa to sabotage.

He also said he'd already been to the hospital with a case of poisoning (ie: how he survived it despite being a patsy who also ate the pie), so the search among "beating victims" will narrow down to "beating victims who've also been poisoned recently", which Alec won't be in, because he didn't go to the hospital.

Honestly ravagers power ironically makes shot guns, buck shot, and even bird shot way more efficient, since the wounds themselves cause more damage the best is to make as many wouldn't per attack as possible

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHSoX6uLw94

heck, rat shot rounds are an excellent weapon here because it almost guarantees a hit despite any other factor, it also means that you can still damage resistant capes a lot even if the kinetics of the projectile don't work, depending on how much the power affects, you have a full 8-guange shotgun blast in the package of a hand gun with almost no recoil, even if each individual shot only takes twice as much flesh as what it touched

Chapter 16: Dance!

Interlude: Mouse Protector

-----

Kicking things over to the PRT usually meant that Minnie got frozen out of an investigation.

Which was why she did it, half the time.

Look, they were better at all the nitty gritty stuff, okay? She was a great big ham and cheese sandwich when it came to irritating and annoying a villain to drag 'em in. But sifting through digital records and stuff? She might be a mouse but she wasn't no Hackwrench!

Honestly, that was part of the reason she'd split up when she hit 18 and went independent instead of joining the Protectorate. She knew what she was good at... and it wasn't what the Protectorate would have wanted from her.

But that was old news!

Minnie was focused on the new news!

Like the fact that she'd actually been called in to talk with Legend and Director Tammy Wilkins. That was... unusual. Mouse Protector decided to go with 'unusual'.

Meeting with Legend, the head of the New York Protectorate was always nice. The man respected her decision to leave, and he respected the reasons behind it. He was just a good, personable kind of guy.

Tammy Wilkins, participating in the meeting via video call, was the opposite of that. That woman had a personality made of Limburger and even harder to swallow.

"Finally crawled out of your mousehole?" Chevalier, Legend's second in command, playfully asked her. "Didn't think you liked dealing with fat cats like us."

"I'd rather we not discuss my mousehole," Mouse Protector sniffed, her nose up in the air. "It's not polite to speak of such things in mixed company."

"...Wait," Prism, Legend's third in command, asked. "What?"

"Focus," Legend gently chided the assembled group of misfits. "Mouse Protector, we requested you for a reason."

"The 9," Tammy Wilkin's voice stated, cutting through the levity in the room. "Following up on the declarations made the other night, from your own report and your helmet footage, we requested assistance from Dragon and found a cache of disturbing information hidden in Ravager's lair."

"...It was true, then?" Minnie asked, uncharacteristically quiet. "The goon squad- union? Goonion. The Goonion accused her of reaching out to the Slaughterhouse 9."

"We'll be discussing the... 'Goonion' momentarily," Tammy told the assembled heroes. "Dragon did go through all of Ravager's communications. Everything from texts, emails and even online orders and found that, yes, Ravager has been attempting to make inroads to the 9. She's been sending one message to every known and suspected account used by members of the Slaughterhouse 9 on every online platform imaginable."

The room was silent enough, Minnie could've heard a pin drop.

Ravager was... not well. That was true of a lot of parahumans but some were worse than others. Some were just angry at the world and wanted to take what they saw as their fair share. Others were hurt, somehow, and wanted to do whatever they could to pay that back tenfold. Ravager's power took the hurt she inflicted on other people and made it worse, reflecting the anger that overtook the woman whenever Mouse Protector encountered her.

She didn't know what caused Ravager to hate her so much. The villain would lose her mind and drop into an incoherent rage if Minnie's heroic identity was so much as mentioned.

When Mouse Protector was at home, when she put up the helmet and let her hair down, she sometimes wondered if she'd... failed her. Somehow. If Ravager had been calling out for Mouse Protector's help at that lowest point in her life, the day where it all fell apart.

"You were featured heavily in her communications," Tammy continued, her normally harsh voice surprisingly soft. "She was offering a considerable sum if they would come and kill you."

"That's..." Chevalier tried to say, his voice trailing off uncomfortably.

"Foolish," Legend declared. "The 9 don't take orders."

"But they are contrary," Tammy said. "They might come to New York and go after Ravager just to prove a point. And I don't need to say what would happen to the rest of the city."

There wasn't much to say on that matter. The 9... The 9 were the kind of nightmare that everyone was afraid of. Even the Triumvirate.

"...We'll be pushing for the birdcage, this time," the director admitted. "Colluding with S-Class threats is beyond the pale."

Mouse Protector didn't, couldn't say anything. She didn't like it, at all, but they were right. Intentionally drawing in the 9 was a special kind of suicidal stupidity. If it was only going to kill Ravager, it wouldn't be as big of a concern. But the 9?

They considered themselves artists, in a fashion. The kind that liked to paint the town red... and their preferred hue was blood.

"...Moving on," the director said after clearing her throat. "This... Goonion represents a new faction. One we have little to no actual information on."

The director's face was replaced by a handful of stills from Mouse Protector's helmet camera. A picture of the delivery van, the silhouette of the lead goon as a black figure in the headlights of the van and then images of both Ravager and March, tied up on the ground.

"Thinker analysis suggests that their interference in Mouse Protector's running battle with Ravager and March may have been spontaneous, but we've been getting some unusual results. On our side of things, we suspect there may be Thinker involvement. Alternatively, we may be looking at a Stranger with a group effect or some kind of masking Tinkertech." The images on screen shifted to the poorly lit or otherwise washed out images of the men that had come out of the van, wielding guns as they roughly handled the detainees. "Notably, each person was identical to the others, based on what we could determine from height and profile. We noticed the same thing about the weapons on them. The only thing that stood out was the vehicle. During its departure, Mouse Protector succeeded at catching the license plate in her field of view and we were able to run that back to an owner."

The screen shifted again, this time showing the head of a young man with brown, wavy hair and soft gray eyes.

"Alec Mist, no prior history with the law. Running a cursory inspection on his banking history did indicate that he was in New York at the time the events took place. According to the receptionist on duty at a motel near the edge of the city, he'd come and booked a room for two nights as he was searching for a new job." The scene changed to show a front shot of a building that happily declared itself the 'Friendly Apple!' "Upon performing a slightly deeper inspection, we managed to get in contact with his current employer and discovered that he is suspended on paid leave from his janitorial position at Brockton Bay Memorial until a full review of his actions and activities at his workplace has been completed. Yesterday morning, however, approximately ten hours after the apprehension of Ravager and March, he was seen at the Brockton Bay General Hospital being treated for a broken nose and bruised ribs."

"Uh..." Mouse Protector raised her hand. "What's all of that mean? Aren't hospitals supposed to keep that stuff confidential?"

"In matters dealing with the Slaughterhouse 9? We have a bit more leeway," Legend admitted. "This is about the limit, though."

"Nearly, yes," the director confirmed through her video-call. "We still have several questions that need to be answered, especially about the group that ran into and then detained Ravager and March. As of now, we have two tasks in particular. Confirming the whereabouts and potential Tinkertech status of the van used in the hit and run on Ravager, and then interviewing one Alec Mist for any details he may be able to provide."

"The van's in Brockton Bay," Mouse Protector firmly declared. "I managed to tag it before it got away. I mean, I'm not 100% certain it's in Brockton Bay but it's close to Miss Militia."

Well, relatively close. Mouse Protector was aware of all of her tags, to a degree. She couldn't point in one direction and go 'Yep, that tag is 200 miles thattaway!' but she could feel where each tag was in relation to each other and herself. The tag she'd hit the van with felt like it was pretty close to the old tag she'd put on a signed photo of herself and Miss Militia from back in the day, back when they were the first Wards.

"That helps," Chevalier admitted. "But not by much. Which of us will be getting sent over to help with the investigation?"

"None of you," Legend said, an angry set to his jaw. "According to Dragon, one of the emails that Ravager sent was actually read. I need everyone on my team here and alert. However?"

Legend turned to face Minnie, the tenseness in his jaw and neck relaxing, just a bit.

"Mouse Protector. Considering you are not part of the Protectorate, those orders do not extend to you. As an affiliate, I am allowed to request that you assist us as the first point of contact with these potential unknowns." There was definitely something in what Legend was saying that stank like week old cheese but Minnie couldn't be sure of what it was, exactly. "It would be at the standard rate, of course, with allowances for travel expenses. Would you be willing to offer your assistance?"

"...You want me to travel to Brockton Bay," Mouse Protector clarified, then continued at Legend's nod. "Where I'll be working with Miss Militia to track down a vehicle that might be Tinkertech and put the squeeze on a guy who might be a Thinker-slash-Stranger-slash-Tinker?"

"Yes."

"And you'll be paying me?"

"Also, yes."

"Sign me up!"

If Mouse Protector took after a mouse in more than appearance? She'd be grinding her teeth in glee!

Evil of Brockton Bay beware! The Mouse Protector will be there!

Whatever those goons were up to, whatever nefarious scheme they were working on, they weren't gonna be ready for Minnie, Mouse Extraordinaire!

-----

Alec stared at the television, his eyes dulled by painkillers and discomfort. His nose was covered in a thick wad of gauze.

His hands, however, were working just fine...

As he backed out of a menu and then removed a unit from his roster.

He loved Dragon Warrior 3. He'd played the heck out of it in the best version that the U.S. had known, the version on the Game Boy Color. But, as he'd learned almost twenty years later, there had actually been a significantly better version for the Super Nintendo.

It was just exclusive to Japan. Like most of the other good games.

But, thanks to the efforts of translators and hackers, and a flash cart that he could put downloaded games on to, he, too could enjoy the game in its best format!

16 bit!

"Ugh..." Alec groaned as he rolled up another character, a female mage, and then began to distribute the five complimentary stat seeds. One of the fun mechanics in the game was that a character could be generated with a specific personality, which would determine its attribute growth upon leveling up.

It was a finicky balance for some of them, whilst others were incredibly simple. Like making a Lucky Thief.

The Sexy Mage may not have had the highest stat growth in MP or Intelligence but it did have the highest overall growth. And, in a game where transmigration was a thing, that actually ended up being fairly useful.

A quiet *ding!* distracted the man, reminding him that it had been five minutes. He reached over to press a finger against the massive .50 caliber rifle leaning against the chair so he could invest a charge into it, focused on silence and recoil, then he summoned a fresh Phantom to keep an eye on the door to his apartment.

He wasn't going to be ambushed in his own home.

Not twice.
