Not so Cheery Leader
"I knew that he was a bit uptight, but I didn't know that Jace was under that kind of stress. And speaking of stress, what's up with, Nessa is it?, over there?" Daryl nods towards the cheerleader sitting across the dance floor.
Liliana winces a bit at Daryl's question, and got a touch emotional as she replied. "Her family moved into the Gardens about 4 years ago, and we actually got along pretty well during the first half of summer," here she starts getting angry as she speaks, "but then her asshole parents found out about my parents, forbid her from talking to me or Chandra, and sent her to fucking 'summer camp' a few days later."
Chandra puts a hand on her shoulder and takes over. "I saw her a bit too when she moved in, but when school started, I was surprised to see her in Dryden, she was supposed to go to St. Mary's with Lils."
Liliana snorts. "Dave's mother works in the office for the school, and he said that he overheard his parents talking about how Nessa's parents tried to get me thrown out of school. Told me how they called my family 'Whores of Satan', among other things. Nessa's parents were furious when the principal refused to kick me out. They were even more furious when they went to the church and tried to get them to kick me out, only to learn that we go to church there as well, every other Sunday." At Daryl's look, Liliana clarifies. "Mom's Catholic, Mamma's Presbyterian. Anyway, they got so furious, they called Father O'Connell a fake Catholic and stormed out. Which is why Nessa has gone to Dryden High ever since, and her parents now go to church in Dayton."
Chandra continues after Liliana leans back to let her anger cool down. "She was a different person when she started school compared to what she was when we met her at the beginning of summer. She was open, had fun, and enjoyed talking to people, but when she got back, she acted like a cold arrogant bitch to everyone. Some of the cheerleaders say that she acts a bit like a watered down version of her mother, scary as that is to believe."
"After a week back, I found a note shoved through the vents into my locker from Nessa, which is how we found out about how her parents sent her to gay conversion camp to get 'fixed'. She apologized to us, but said that she couldn't talk to us ever again or her parents would kill her. God, It scares me to think just how little she may have been exaggerating there." Chandra takes a drink, while Liliana comes in.
"So we've ignored each other since then. Nessa's thrown herself into cheer-leading and dating a different boy every month. She doesn't really have any friends either. Her parent approved minions, Cathy and Mindy, who you can see sitting over by Dack, are kids of her parents friends. So anything they tell their parents about school, goes right to Nessa's parents at the end of the day. It's just awful what they did to her. Hopefully, once she goes to college, and get out from under her parent's thumb, she can start being a real human being again."
