You froze as you saw the room, it was torn apart by an explosion, the blast in the center of the room was a giant pile of soot and ash. Blood was splattered all over the walls, splinters and blown out glass was everywhere.
The scene was cordoned off by soldiers of the Imperial Guard, trying their best to leave the scene untouched.
But even they could not stop you from running forward to see that the office of Marshal Kellerman was bombed.
You walked forward. "What happened?" You asked.
Chamans, the ever-loyal and capable, and surprisingly well-educated man that he was, stopped you. "Empress, I'd rather you not contaminate the crime scene."
You saw that he was covered in blood, and soot as if he was in the blast radius. "Where is Marshal Kellerman?" You asked.
Chamans shook his head. "The Marshals Kellerman and Serrurier are in hospital right now. The explosion was five grenades thrown through the window."
"I thought Serrurier was in Instanbul?" You asked.
"He was, he was on sabbatical and producing the reports for the Emperor and Minister Talleyrand. Marshal Kellerman had requested that he meet for a small chat about a certain reform he wished to see through."
You realized it was his payment for soldiers and officers. "I know… but why today?"
Chamans bit his lip before sighing, pulling out a pipe. "Smoke?"
You waved your hand. "I don't like puffing smoke. I breathe enough of it in the battlefield."
"Shame, it calms the nerves." Chamans said as he looked at a burning candle, and lit his pipe with it, before puffing smoke and taking a drag. "Bit expensive though, Virginia tobacco."
"Do you have any ideas about this murderer?" You asked.
"Actually I do." Chamans said as he quietly took a drag. "Royalists and traditionalists in the Army, those that prefer to steal for payment, generals of the old regime."
You frowned. "And you have proof?"
Chamans smiled. "Of course. There are officers already toasting the replacements for Kellerman and Serrurier right now. Trying to put an end to this little project that you have been working on."
You raised your eyebrows. "Does Napoleon know?"
"Does he know, he's the one who put this operation together." Chamans replied.
Then you heard clapping as Kellerman walked in, with crutches. "Enjoy the show Chamans, explaining it to the confused Empress?"
Your jaw took a moment to pick up off the floor, as you looked back to Chamans. "I thought-"
Kellerman laughed. "Oh just a broken leg, I'll be fine my dear. Serrurier wants to remain in the hospital a little while longer, to sell the deception that he is critically wounded." He then looked to Chamans. "Thank you for the help."
"Anything to serve Marshal." He said with a salute. "Shall I round up the… cowards?"
"No… let them celebrate a little while longer." Kellerman replied. "I want the Emperor to be here to see this." Kellerman paused. "Would you like to join us?"
"I am requested at court, unfortunately." You replied with a smile. "But give Napoleon my regards for an ingenious plan."
"Perfect." Chamans said.
Reward:
As it turns out, the Plan to catch traitors required… some sacrifice.
While the two men are relatively unharmed, the rewards were very good.
Napoleon has executed, or fired 25 disloyal officers who wished to… well, you don't know, Chamans didn't say, but he did say that Napoleon can trust more junior officers with higher command.
AN: Enjoy.
Interlude: A Day in Court leads to a Day of (Mis)Trust
Interlude: A Day in Court leads to a Day of (Mis)Trust
You felt very awkward with the dress on. It was too long, too flowery, and you couldn't wear a sword on it. The shoes, if you could call those stilts that were somehow supposed to carry your weight shoes, were hurting your feet, and you did not have any kind of warm socks. And in the Palace, you wanted to have nice warm socks.
"Must I wear this?" You asked Josephine as she finally finished examining you and smiling. "These shoes are extremely uncomfortable."
Josephine folded her arms. "You are going to court and you are going to dress the part of the Empress, not the Marshal. You made that choice remember?"
"Yes, and I wish to also wear something that doesn't hurt my feet." You stated. "Even barefoot is better than this."
Josephine frowned. "At least humor them for a couple of steps."
"We're quite more than a couple of steps from the throne room and the ballroom." You said, not trying to say it properly while you groaned in pain as you took a step, shaking as you tried to balance. "What fool designed this madness?"
Josephine shook her head. "Some designer in the city. He saw some old fashion that were formally in style and tweaked it for court. It's quite popular among some of the more… former noblewomen in court."
"Including you?" You asked.
Josephine nodded before she gave a sly smile. "I prefer something far more comfortable."
That traitor. "I should fire you for this pain and suffering." You stated with a growl.
"But you won't because than you would be helpless with the other people who would seek to embarrass you." She replied.
You frowned. "I want to carry my pistol."
"An Empress does not carry a pistol." Josephine replied.
"But I do."
"Come on My Empress, we must get going." She replied ignoring the statement you made.
And it was agony that you felt for the entire walk to court.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You were this close to ripping the shoes off and shooting someone with one of the guard's rifles to get them all to scatter. Sure it would not be the best impression for the Republicans, the surviving monarchists who were now your allies, and those that Napoleon liked and gave positions in court… who were afraid of angering you because you could send a corps after them.
But you were dreadfully in pain and you wanted it to stop. And it couldn't stop while the sun was still up in the sky and pleasantries had to be given. To everyone.
"Is the Empress alright?" A voice asked as you saw that some were starting to stare at you as you finished greeting one of the newer nobles… well not new, but an ex duke that wormed his way back into a position at court as an assistant
"I've heard she cannot wear anything that is dignified and I am right. She cannot." A Lady of court whispered. "She is truly ugly in that dress."
Well, you didn't want to wear a dress, so maybe you could shoot that lady first.
"I am fine." You loudly proclaimed, and walked towards the throne, and plopped yourself on it.
Josephine was horrified. "Empress, you can't just sit on the throne!"
"Why not, it's a chair, and my feet hurt, and it's there. I'm sitting on it." You stated.
Every courtier was horrified.
"That is Napoleon's throne," Josephine stated. "Only he's allowed to sit there."
"I'm sure he won't mind." You shot back finely feeling relief as you took off those horrible shoes you had endured wearing… and saw blood coming from your ankles.
"There are others who would mind," Josephine said, exasperated at the things she was telling you. "Those who really wish for a more… Decorum from the Empress."
She was horrified, looking at the shoe marks and the blood on your ankles.
You frowned. "If I wanted more decorum, I would have sent them all away, and forced everyone to wear a uniform." You complained. "And burn these shoes, they are horrible.
There was a gasp from the crowd, someone really fainting at you making such a proclamation and the shoes were taken away by one of the courtiers, hopefully for a good burning.
"You can now see why I detest court." You heard a familiar voice, and it made you turn.
You then saw Louis, wearing a few new medals of your creation on his chest. And in his arm, a hat, a big one like the one you wore, with black feathers… falcon feathers.
He stood tall, and beside him were his two… objects of affection.
Gabriella was… well you were not going to call her ugly, but she was clearly not a pretty woman in a conventional sense. Her teeth were bucked, her blonde hair was not only short, and youthful, but dirty, with mud in her hair. Her uniform was wearing a combat ribbon and the Second Coalition medal.
And for Charles… you didn't think you could ever imagine a Mini Denis in your life. Yet there he was sitting in the flesh. Though he had a…
No, he had different eyes than the jovial mad Marshal that was your comrade. He was calmer, more disciplined. His eyes are sharper and far more.
Well to say that they were more daring than his father's, which would be impossible, yet they were.
"Good to see you, Marshal!" Charles said as he saluted to you.
You saluted back. "I'm glad to see you are still as enthusiastic as ever."
"Always." He replied. You then noticed he had a pistol on his side.
Josephine seemed very concerned, but not you. "That weapon loaded?"
"Yes." He replied. "Why wouldn't it be?"
He had snuck a gun past your security. My god…. He was good.
You would need to see if you could get another one.
"Hello, Empress." Gabriella gave a perfect bow, as if she was pretending to be a boy, and had been practicing, despite her almost instinctive desire to courtesy to you. "I am honored to meet you in person, instead of your commands."
"It is an honor as well Gabriella." You replied with a small nod of your head. "Louis, I take it you are not very happy being here?"
Louis turned his head and saw a fair few faces that you probably suspected were the same type or the same people who wanted to crown him angered at your presence and angered by… everything about you.
"Don't worry about them." You stated. "Are you alright?"
Gabriella started. "Yes, do you have to wear that silly dress, or were you forced to?"
You turned to Josephine. "Forced." You replied.
"My God, you really are a puppet-like the nobles wished for Louis to be." She said with a laugh.
You turned to Louis and saw his face turn red in embarrassment. "Stop. please." He was trying to stop her from shouting. "I don't want any attention."
You were about to say something when the doors to the room were opened and in came a very large party.
A Party with Austrian colors.
"Your Majesty the Empress, I present to you, Archduchess Marie Anne, or the Empire of Austria." A Herald proclaimed.
Louis' face turned both red and white at the same time. As he saw the Archduchess walk forward, and courtesy to you, before looking to Louis. "Hello, Prince Capet."
And you paled. You turned to Josephine. "Did you know about this?" You asked.
"Napoleon knew you would not come if you knew." Josephine stated.
Oh shit.
"Is she part of the diplomatic Embassy from Austria?" You asked.
"Yes," Josephine said. "You would know if you actually listened to me briefing you about the happenings of court."
You look towards the Archduchess and allow yourself to smile, uncomfortableness aside.
"Welcome to Paris, Archduchess." You replied, with a small courtesy. "I hope you find your stay well, and comfortable."
Marie nodded. "I shall find it greatly comforting, thank you, Empress."
Reward:
All of Louis Lovers are now in the same room and general area.
You are caught off guard by your lack of politics again.
God help you.
The Austrian Embassy has arrived to make a deal with Napoleon and France, to save itself.
New Actions avalible.
ANL Enjoy.

The Rumor Mill: The Great Powers of Europe (1797 Q2)
To describe the jubilation that France feels in its first six months of peace, and the new reforms that it has caused is to describe a growing calm that has embraced France.
Manufactories from Steel to coal, to other materials like clothing, fabrics have brought great wealth to regions of the country that would otherwise be stuck as agrarian or craftsmen based economy
Its people, seeing a growing wealth in the lower classes that had for centuries had remained stagnant, have begun to use their newfound wealth for other pursuits. Some wealthy townsfolk in those villages and towns have begun to found private education centers.
Many soldiers, many of them who learned how to read and write in the army that had forced them into junior or noncommissioned officer roles, went to their homes with stories and dreams.
Dreams of a France that may finally see a better tomorrow.
Reward: Gain National Spirit:
The Literacy Boom: Many officers and even non-commissioned officers have gone home and begun to teach their children and their neighbors how to read and write. This may have a great effect on the future of the Republic. (If there is not a 15 or less during the next 10 years, or if manpower reserves in France do not reach critical levels, the Literacy rate of France will increase from 35% to 70%. This can be modified by doing education actions that are now available.)
Austria has collapsed… it's Empire, Bosnias, Serbs, Croats, Bulgars.
All have Risen. All clamor for Freedom.
The Army is mobilized. Now it must fight for survival. And perhaps, break bread with the enemy that had scorned them the most.
There is still a need for an Austrian Bulwork Even Napoleon is not foolish enough to allow it to collapse.
Is he?
Reward: Austria Gains National Spirit:
The Austrian Crisis: The Austrian Empire is dealing with Ethnic rebellions in its territories, and has sent its army to crush them underfoot. But this may not be enough. (Austria is in Crisis. It will take miracles to save it from total collapse.)
But it has miracles to spare, and their greatest commander still lives.
The Army, and almost all their commanders and divisions, have remained loyal to the Emperor.
They have sent Emmisarys all over Europe searching for allies.
And may give many concessions for their own survival.
To describe the… The horror that occurred in Ireland, is to describe Olivar Cromwell's massacres of the Natives. The Cities were first, with the Royal Marines and Regular forces, along with Irish Militias loyal to the crown, began a brutal counter-insurgency campaign.
Thousands were rounded up. Thousands more fought back with little in the way of weapons, ships that were carrying supplies and weapons, confiscated, destroyed.
Or worse, used to arm the very people whom they were fighting.
Tens of thousands were executed or imprisoned, to be sent to Australia.
In less than a month, all the Irish Republicans who had proclaimed their freedom for their fellow countrymen were dead, Murdered, and executed.
The Dream of a Free Ireland was crushed.
For now.
But not forever.
Reward: The Irish Rebellion has been brutally subjected by the British Army and Loyalists.
Tens of thousands flee. To Canada, the United States, and more pressingly. To Spain and France.
Ireland is back under control. Confidence is restored in the British Crown, Army, Navy, and Economy.
To Describe the Position of the Tsar is to describe a chessboard that he has full control over, planning and counter planning every move that his rivals may try to use against him.
Including the nominal allies, the British. He played them like fiddles in a sense. But using their agents that were chasing the wayward and Incredulous Former Princess Charlotte Auclair across Europe, into revealing their agents.
A great loss, as he purged, arrested, or deported them without another word.
He could have taken the princess prisoner. But he ran into a problem.
Her bodyguards were rather stubborn, and would not die.
And some Italian French Soldier rode across Europe in a matter of weeks… and rescued them. Some rifleman that took out twenty-five don cossacks, and escaped his grasp into Austria…
Quite concerning. If one soldier could do that, even with surprise and a rifle. He feared what this new Army that Napoleon had been reforming will do.
Reward: Russia has purged almost all foreign agents within its borders, the Tsar has absolute control over most matters of state that he wishes.
He is, however, greatly worried that Napoleon is planning to use his new Army in a way that may destabilize Europe and his new place in it.
And how some soldier saved the Princess and her guard he was hunting.
The Pope: 1
The Pope is dead.
Long Live the Holy Father.
Reward: The Pope is dead. The Conclave has been called to elect a new representative to be God's Emissary on Earth.
----------------------------------------
Julian Minci had a dream his princess was in danger, so he stole a horse, grabbed a few rifles and ammo, and rode as hard as he could.
He rode to the Rhine, through Germany, and into Poland in less than a month, every time his horse died, or collapsed of exhaustion, he ran to another town, stole a horse, and rode it again.
When he crossed the Neiman river, he saw a sight that burned his soul.
His Princess, surrounded by Cossacks, the fearsome Russian warriors of the Steppe.
Took up cover behind a fallen tree. And fired.
He switched to another rifle.
He Fired.
Soon his three rifles needed to be reloaded, and he did so one at a time, calmly and methodically, as Marshal Severin had trained him.
They came towards him.
He Fired.
Each shot killed his enemy.
But he could not reload fast enough. So he fixed a bayonet and stabbed at the closest one, before dropping the discarded rifle onto the ground and removing his only pistol.
He kept fighting and firing, not even noticing the wounded men who were near death coming to his aid as he had the attention of the cossacks.
The three of them, and even his beloved Princess killed them.
One escaped, even after he reloaded his rifle and shot the man in the back.
But they could not stay there.
So he chose to put the wounded men on horseback, and head south. Hopefully, they could reach Italy if they were careful.
Reward: Julian Minci does miracles and rescues his princess and her bodyguard, and flees south into Austrian Poland.
The two bodyguards are wounded, but thanks to some timely medical aid and some rest from the young ensign, they will survive their wounds.
Louis Mashengo has lost an eye, and an arm along with having a broken leg, six broken ribs, a broken hand, and two slash wounds on his torso.
He is lucky to be alive.
Louis Marceau Severin on the other hand suffered from two slashes on his thigh, three slashes across the face, two broken ribs, a broken foot, and a swollen shut-eye.
The Princess is alive and unharmed and grateful for her savior, Julian.
You smiled as the door opened, revealing the woman you had only had the pleasure of meeting once before in Tulon, all those years ago. She looked plumb, as you noticed that she was, as you were years ago. Pregnant with her third child. Or twins, knowing the luck you seemed to see.
Twins were a rarity, but you would never try to wish such a troubling birth on anyone.
Evelyn Severin quickly gave courtesy and stopped herself short from hugging you as you took a step forward. "My Empress, it is wonderful to see you again."
Her energy was infectious and you could not help but smile as you entered the room. "It is an honor to be in your home."
She frowned. "This is not our home, merely an apartment rented by for when Denis is in Paris. We much rather had preferred to meet in our home, instead of this cramped place."
You saw how lived in the apartment was. Knocks and tallies were on the wall, and portraits, freshly painted. The Marshal and his family, you had heard that Severin had a black eye when he had it painted, a request by one of the painters at court, begging to paint a portrait of the former Sargent, turned Marshal. Severin agreed, only he had it turned into a family portrait, the first one his family had ever had.
Turned out to be true, both of Severin's eyes were black and blue in the portrait, and the family with him were dressed in their finest. Evelyn was wearing a green and white dress, that showed none of her pregnancy, suggesting that it was done months ago.
Charles was wearing his dress uniform and their youngest was grabbing at the Baton that her father was carrying. "What is her name. Your daughter?"
"Jeanne Therese" At that, you felt your heart flutter.
"I'm honored." You said with a small smile rising on your face.
"Don't be, I wanted to just name her Jeanne, but that blasted fool Matteo forced my hand in her middle name." She said with a frown. "And she's too young to understand the significance of the name."
"You don't want her burdened by a name?" You asked.
"I learned a long time ago that names can carry expectations. It's why I and my husband are fond of nicknames and titles for other people. Sometimes their names carry a weight of legacy. Other times they just need to laugh, and be reminded that everything is okay." She stated.
You raised an eyebrow. "Do you have one for me?"
Evelyn laughed. "For you, no. My husband however has much in the way of nicknames for you. He's just sober enough to keep them to himself. Especially in your presence."
"Mother! Dinner is ready!" Charles said from the kitchen, and you raised an eyebrow.
"Dennis can cook?" You asked.
"Simple meals, and I think we both are due some simplicity in our lives right now." She replied. "Roast duck and steamed ham."
You smiled. "You shouldn't have, I should have brought Napoleon and the boys." You said.
Evelyn then entered the kitchen first, before backing away. "I think-"
"It's all ready, come on, let's eat!" Severin stated as he placed a pot on the table, the sound of metal on wood was clear and present.
Evelyn failed to stop you, as you smelled the food, it smelled good.
"What are you worried about?" You asked.
Evelyn's face was becoming white as Charles served you a piece of duck. "Please Dennis, please tell me you remembered-"
You had already taken a bite when you finally heard the word. "The sauce."
Then you tasted the blandness… it was bland. Unappetizing, a mixture of spices and the flavor of the duck. But, bland.
It was so bland it was unappetizing. In fact, you felt a revolution come up through you as you swallowed.
You then coughed. "The hell is this!?"
Dennis then realized his mistake. "I remembered the sauce Evelyn!"
"You overcooked it then! It must have been evaporated!" She screamed, as you drowned a glass of wine to feel something good.
"Severin you bastard!" You shouted as you reached for the nearest instrument of death. His Marshals Baton. With an ax head on it.
"Empress, please put down the Baton!" He screamed as he backed away, protecting his son.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Evelyn smiled as she grinned at the two bodies of the marshal and his son, tied up on a chair. "Thank you for the help." She said.
"Absolutly." You replied. "Never allow Dennis to cook for me ever again, and I will forget this transgression."
Evelyn turned to the gagged Dennis who was regaining his senses. "Quiet you, we have a long talk after this."
"Will he hold it against me?" You asked.
"If anything, it will show him how much you trust him. Even taking a bite of his cooking is something that makes many would never do. And you did." She replied.
She then gave a thank you courtesy and closed the door.
They were a strange family. The strangest you have ever met.
But you saw love in everything they did, even when they make mistakes.
Reward:
The Severin Family has been met, and it has given you many ideas on how to make family time more personal, and fun.
And trusting for yourself and Napoleon.
You have learned that you must accept the randomness of life, and stick together, no matter what.
The Canadians and Quebecois were hoping for more time.
They had assembled their forces into the militia's and were prepared to fight, waiting for American reinforcements who would wish for them to join their union.
They never came. The United States was not able to even react to the rebellion, nor assemble forces to help their allies in the North.
The British were there with ten thousand troops, in less than two months.
And the Rebellion, like Irelands, was crushed in less than a month later.
Their leaders, those that remained defiant and courageous, were hanged from the gallows.
Those that were less brave, were hunted like dogs through the wilderness. The cowards fled to America, who returned them for execution.
The Quebecois got it much worse.
They were expelled from Quebec, every Catholic, every Frenchman, to the west, or to the far north.
They would not be in British lands anymore.
The burgeoning Canadian republican movements have been snuffed in their cribs. Never to rise.
Reward: The British have retaken control of Canada with little resistance, and have forced the Quebecois into exile, scattering them to the west, with no supplies, no weapons. No help.
They went south, into the United States, across the ill-prepared defenses and borders of the frontiers, towards the great cities of the Americas.
The Humiliation of the Revolution in the Americas and their humiliation in Ireland would be avenged.
It is unknown why they did so… but the army generals and admirals ignored orders from parliament to return.
Drunk off the victory in Canada, their forces marched south, sailed south, to burn the United States down.
New York Survival:87
Philadelphia Survival: 66
New York and Philadelphia survived.
The Hastily assembled militias, along with an army unit led by Alexander Hamilton and members of the New York State Assembly gathered into small bands of guerillas, attacking British forces in camp, their supply columns.
Bleeding forces as they had in the Revolution.
Washington DC Survival:6
The Miricle:99+83=182
But when they Reached Washington DC, it was not loot they were after. They wanted to burn it down, to spit on the grave of the hated General Washington who had defeated them.
Washington DC, the city, a jewel for the New Americas…
A Dream to strive for… was almost entirely destroyed.
The Britsh were jubilant and prepared to go home.
But then they realized one thing.
General Washington was alive had come to stop them.
He was ill, near dead at this point, an illness sapping much of his strength.
But his assembled forces numbered 5,000 with twenty-five guns. Along with 50 Spanish soldiers as part of the Ambassadors guard.
His enemy, 8,500, with navel support.
The British never stood a chance.
After the first hour, the British fled the smoking ruins of the city, doused by a hurricane that came almost as if the General Summoned it himself, or God himself was on the side of the Americans.
Yet their ships could not escape the Storm… all sank.
But Washington was merciful.
His government would deal with these vagabonds, and ill-gotten men who dared call themselves soldiers.
The British would be humiliated a second time by him. That was more than enough.
He just wanted to go home to die peacefully. Yet even now, he could not.
He once again surrendered his command to Congress and the President and returned to Mt. Vernon a Final Time.
"It is time for me to go." He said to Jefferson.
Alexander Hamilton waited for him outside the ruins of the city. "Do good, my son. I have done all I can for you. Now do all you can for your country. That is all I ask of you, and for all Americans to follow."
He died ten days later, peacefully in bed, with family around him.
Reward: Washington is Dead, America mourns.
It has survived its challenges by the British. Now it must survive without him.
8,000 British prisoners now sit in America, their officers in rags, and in chains… The British Empire now must suffer an embarrassment the likes of which it has not suffered in decades.
Francesco Melzi d'Eril, the man who had, for many months in the Italian Peninsula, at least in the North of Naples, was one of the most ardent supporters of the Italian states now unifying under one banner. He had, in court, at least from what you heard, been pushing for more Italian Autonomy. More Italian Leadership instead of French.
While he was personally loyal to Napoleon, many could not fault him from trying to play it well into his own personal power within Italy, and for his country, now totally under French control.
You, however, greeted the man in the empty coffee house that was cleared for this meeting, with a smile and a warm handshake. "<I trust you might try to speak Italian?>" the man asked, his Italian making you feel very uncomfortable.
"I'd prefer french sir, just so we can safely claim to not be committing treason." You replied with a quiet gaze as you unholstered your pistol.
"Very well." He stated. "I'm sure the reports have crossed your desk. And you have heard the rumors."
"Yes, Napoleon hed and election to see if the Italian states wished to have a republic or a king." You stated with a shake of your head. "Do you suspect foul play in the electoral process?"
"Besides the fact that in terms of votes there were less than one hundred thousand fully counted and viewed as legal across all of Italia?" the Italian native replied. "No. It was legitimate if a bit small in terms of actual votes that were considered legal." He took a drink of coffee and sighed. "I hate to say this, but Napoleon has been given the mandate to choose a king. I just wish we can influence him to choose the right one."
An eyebrow raised on your face. "And how would you plan for me to do that?" You asked. "I am not in the mood to play politics to choose whoever Napoleon sees as important and loyal enough onto a throne."
"That is not true." the Italian replied as he showed a letter. "Read this."
You looked at the letter and read it, reading every line as you translated Italian into French in your mind, before you stopped halfway through, and dropped it. "Are you mad?" You gritted your teeth. "You'll start a war if you go through with this."
"The Italian people may have made a choice, and we have agreed to have a monarch, but there are some who want to go further than have the Emperor decide it. We want a king that will look after our interests, more than the Emperors." He paused as he finished the coffee and turned the cup over. "And if need be, we would seek assassination."
You closed your eyes and squeezed the bridge of your nose. "What you are planning to do, is kill a man your people in essence elected."
"Correct," Francesco stated calmly, as he wiped his face with a cloth. "I hold no such arguments. But I believe that, above all else, believe peace can be achieved if the right man is to be placed on the throne. You."
You frowned. "The last time someone forced me into power, it didn't end well. For anyone."
"Save Napoleon."
You found yourself gritting your teeth. "Why is it you wish for me, instead of someone of your confidants. Another Italian?"
Francesco gave a small sigh. "Massena is not a man who holds the future of Italy in his sights. He is loyal to Napoleon and his own Glory, and that will not see Italy prosper, either under Napoleon or without him. Joseph is only loyal to his brother and will follow his orders in the end and continue a Bonaparte kingdom even if France were to fall. And any man else will not see a future where we are not at war, for Napoleon's empire."
"This is about beyond Napoleon?" You asked.
"Your sister may control his worst impulses, but Napoleon is ambitious, and will not stop until he is master of the world, or dead," Francesco replied. "I'm looking to the Future. Your brother-in-law is mortal."
"But what he can build can last longer than him." You replied.
"That may be, but I am not so optimistic." Francesco then stood, cleaning himself off as he gave a small bow. "Brian, if you believe in the Revolution, you will try."
"And if you believe in peace, stay your hand." You stated. "Tell your followers that there is a better way. A more peaceful way."
Francesco took a moment to ponder your words. "They already will. I just wanted to make sure you were the right man."
"I do not want this throne." You stated.
"Good, it means our faith in you will be well rewarded." Francesco than walked out into the Parisian night, leaving you alone to stew.
Finally, you said words only to yourself.
A very hollow statement.
"Napoleon. I ask for one thing from you. A crown."
Maybe it won't be one of thrones and disaster.
Reward:
Brian has requested the Italian Crown. He has an increased chance of being crowned King of Italy, Naples, or both.
Brian hates that he even considers it. But he has a plan. A plan to secure his own future and legacy.

-Can Reroll up to Two times on the surveying roll in addition to the trait you have.
Brian looked like he had seen a ghost as you rode to Avignon, his villa that had become his own after the first war. He was sitting down, looking at old maps of Europe and so much more.
"Are you alright?" You asked as you sat down next to him.
Brian shook his head, before letting out a small laugh. "I'm fine sister. Though I wish I could sleep more."
"What is wrong?" You asked.
"Pauline is Pregnant again, and between her moods and my daughter, they are running me ragged." He said without a hint of irony.
"I thought you would be happier with the news." You said. "Our family growing larger is always good news."
Brain found himself shaking his head. "Oh, that is good news, but-"
You folded your arm. "Brian?"
"Do you ever fear that it may be too much? That power will destroy us?" He asked.
That was not the brother you knew. "What prompts that?" You asked.
Brian frowned, but he instead stood up. "I'm going to ask Napoleon for something, I ask for you to support me."
"Of course." You replied. "But what is it?"
"You're going to have to trust me. Can you do that?" He asked.
"Brian."
"Please." He begged.
You frowned. "Very well."

Napoleon looked tired. That was a rare thing indeed, for you to see at least. He was always energetic, full of life and energy.
You sat beside him, as he watched the twins walk around on their own, beaming with pride as they tumbled and rose again, with the energy that only youth could bring them.
"Seeing them reminds me how old I have become." He said to himself, before turning to you. "To think we started as such small creatures, unknowing how we may affect the world, with only our parents to guide us."
You frowned. "This is going somewhere, Napoleon? Isn't it?"
Napoleon did not answer immediately. But he looked to your sons and gave a sigh. "They are brilliant. They are walking when most still have trouble. They are talking in simple words, and they recognize their family."
You realized what he was speaking about. The future. "They are children Napoleon. I think it would be best to keep our ideas on what may be needed of them until they can understand."
Napoleon shook his head. "They are my heirs. They need to be ready to lead if something were to happen to me, to you. I do not need the ship of state to be without a captain if we were to lead."
You were shocked. "Napoleon, listen to yourself, truly listen to yourself!" You raised your voice and forced him to look at you. "You want to subject your sons, our children to an education that may make them statesmen, but they will not be our children! They will just be tools of the state. We cannot force them to be that. We cannot force them to be anything other than our children."
Napoleon stopped for a moment, chewing on your words. "But."
"We are not the Bourbons. We are not Monarchs, no matter you try to style yourself, and place yourself as one!" You said. "We are subject to the whims and fancies of our people. We lead them as a guiding hand, not tyrants."
You felt your hands shake as you paused, cupping Napoleon's hand. "If we will educate our children, they will receive the education they desire. I became a surveyor out of necessity, but a General out of desire, and training. They can learn from us… That whatever their desire, they can focus on it without fear. And become masters of it."
Napoleon paused and stared deeply into your eyes. He was without words.
Then he finally spoke. "You always remind me why I love you. You have wisdom that I cannot comprehend, grounding me to my core." He looked away back to your twins. A deep breath followed. "I'm-"
"There is nothing to apologize for, especially when you realize the error in your ways. Just as I do." You replied.
Napoleon held your hand, looking up into your face. "Will you walk with me, my Empress?"
"Maman." You heard Alex speak as he tumbled forward towards you.
You smiled and picked up your son. "You can come too."
"Papa." Roland said as he touched on his father's trousers.
Napoleon helped him to his feet and held his hands. Smiles on his face. His tiredness gone. Invigorated by his family.
"Of course." You replied.
-------------------------------------------------
Reward: Napoleon has deferred to your wisdom on how to raise his children, and decided to, as you put it, let them choose themselves. They will not be tools of his will, or the State, as so many monarchs use their children for.
But his Children first, and foremost will learn to be children.

July 13th, 1797
Napoleon frowned as you looked towards the list of names he has chosen. "I didn't think you cared so much about this matter?"
"I do. Especially because it involves Brian."
(Continued in: To Make Kings: Italian Edition.)

You turned to Marshal Severin and felt a great deal of pride from his beaming face. "You are enjoying this far too much."
Severin for his part, did nothing to stop his smile. "You have given me a place to Train Riflemen." He paused as he pulled out his Baton. "I will make them the most fearsome shots in the world!"
The soldiers cheered as he proclaimed that. And in front of the instructors, was Louis, being uncomfortable as usual in full dress uniform, being watched not only by the Archduchess who had requested to watch the ceremony… but also Charles and Gabriella, who stood next to him.
"I still think Louis should wait until he's older to serve as an instructor." You stated.
"Nonsense, the boy's old enough and important enough to take part in this kind of instruction. The fact he's killed men will help greatly in that regard. And it's far safer than being on a battlefield." Severin replied as he knew precisely why you were being so cautious. "He's in my good hands. I promise you that."
You raised an eyebrow. "Every word you speak, and you continue to remind me why I shouldn't trust his life in your hands. I've read the reports from Marengo."
"He disobeyed orders. He seems to have picked it up from one surveyor I know…. Can't remember the name." Severin replied with a small smirk, causing you to give a Grin yourself. Even you could no longer be afraid of what you have become.
"Keep him safe from Politics Severin, I beg you." You said, the grin dimming.
"I can't really stop politics Empress, but I can shoot well," Severin replied looking to the Archduchess. "We can always start another war, just say the word."
You frowned now. "I think I'm done with war for one lifetime." You stated, making your will very clear.
"As you order." He replied with a smile. "Though we can't choose to stop fighting, not with Europe like this. We'll have to win or be destroyed. There is going to be a lot more war before this is over."
"And you hope for it?" You ask.
"No." Severin was very serious as he said that sole word. "But I know no one will accept anything until they are destroyed."
Reward:
The Riflemen's Collage has been formed, commanded by Marshal Severin, in addition to his duties as Commander of II Corps
Units of Riflemen can now be formed, and existing units can be retrained with only a loss of one unit of experience, though they can gain that experience back at only 2 battles instead of 3.
Rifled Cavalry can now be created as well.

Vienna was everything you had heard about and more.
It was also terrifying to be without Napoleon watching your back.
But at least Julian was there to show you that yes, there was some fuckery about. "I can assure you, I am not a spy, I am protecting Charlotte Auclair, the Empress's daughter." He said once again as he saw you. "Oh… Uh… Empress, I can explain everything, once you get me out of these irons, and get me back to my Princess!"
This was going to be difficult, wasn't it?

You were starting to think someone would never create something that could preserve food.
Marmont took a breath and felt like he was about to die. "Empress, are you sure this is appropriate?"
You shook your head. "I'm asking to talk to you, over coffee, nothing more, what is so inappropriate about that. So speak plainly." You said, annoyed. "I'm asking you what you think about the new Corps System."
There was a pause before he spoke. "I don't really believe there has ever been a revolution in the military organization since…" He scratched his head. "Well, I'd say the roman legions, but that is clearly not right, or accurate, in the scale of Warfare. The fact that now, the organization of an Army can be placed into separate, independent commands, with a supreme commander, that being the Emperor over it... Christ, the number of possibilities that this has created can revolutionize how war is fought."
"Yes, and I've heard that numerous times," you stated. "Are you not the least bit angered that you are not commanding a Corps?"
Marmot sighed. "I do not feel worthy of such an honor. I have betrayed France, I cannot lead one."
"And If I were shot, wounded… killed?" You asked. "And one of my other commanders didn't know? What then?"
He frowned. "I-"
"If destiny comes do not hesitate. I didn't." You replied. "And I was lucky because I feel like my choice was made for me."
Reward: Marmot is now available as a Battlefield commander in VIII Corps.
He will take command of the Artillery if you do not automatically.
Unknown Effect on his rolls.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Davout did not allow you to meet you, as he was. Too busy.
You didn't realize he loved your name that much to spend an entire week with his wife and his staff, and their families, playing games.
But by God, you enjoyed the fact he enjoyed it.
Failure:
As it turns out, making a war game that is very accurate, as much as you can, means that he really likes playing it when not training his staff.
Rightfully so, as… You had a lot of fun creating it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You smiled as you looked at the confused Marshals among you. "Well, Gentlemen. We have two different Expansions, three new rulebooks, and of course, new scenarios."
The Marshals looked terrified. "You have three days to prepare before the tournament." You smiled. "Good luck."
"Why is the United States so overpowered?" Marshal Kellerman asked. "And riflemen gain an additional advantage at over 200 yards?
"Read the rules." You replied. "Now, onto the Brackets."

You had your family, and that was all that mattered to you at the moment.
And Brian's dog was so cute!

De Lisle smiled as you tasted it. "So, you like it?"
You tried not to gag. "Tastes strong."
De Lisle took a breath. "Thank god, I'm not the only one who hates the taste. But it will keep for a long time, and it hydrates well."
"Can you produce it on a scale to supply an Army?" You asked.
"Now?" He asked. "No. But with-"
"Tell me what you need?" You asked.
He did.
Reward:
You have invested in De Lisles "Soldier's Wine"
This invention in 8 turns will be mass-produced and given to all units in the French Army, as a ration to keep them hydrated in emergency situations.
Supply Rolls will now have a +20 to their effectiveness for the remainder of the Quest.
Disease Roll will now only go up by weather and disease in the area.

"Ladies, I was not expecting to use my husband's spy network to find out how much people like my book, but we decided that it was the most productive way to use them at this moment in time."
You then opened up the Pamphlet. "Please turn to page 5 for the reviews."
(Continued in: By Storm)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is it with Politics that you despise so much?
The fact that everyone is a lying sack of… well the children would never forgive you for swearing.
Murat and Bessiere had some pointers to inform you of.
And you took the advice in Stride. Even though you lack true talent.
Reward: +1 to Cavalry command.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, you did not expect this kind of… both skilled planning from your Marshals.
You were horrified with the final results of the novel. Yes, you had taken to following the instructions of the women's club, who were greatly helpful in the structuring, and the overall plot, if not the more minute details of the narrative itself.
You had just used your talent and personal experience to describe a scenario where Lancelot, the greatest of Arthur's Knights and the Lady Guinevere… decided to get together, where Guinevere decided that, after years of fruitless marriage, lack of respect and power over her own life, began the dalliance affair of love, and acceptance. Angering King Arthur, and causing Scandal in his court, to the point where Lancelot was exiled, and Guinevere secluded herself into a monastery for the remainder of her days, to never be with another man again.
You did not want the three sex scenes that were at the beginning, middle, or end of the novel to appear, that took away from the entire doomed romance and the narrative and politics you were trying to weave in. You felt they were forced, especially in the beginning scene, where Arthur all but raped Guinevere, which sickened you to no end.
You much rather would have never had them at all.
Yet the women requested you keep it, to show much greater, and more shocking detail of the abuse that Guinevere suffered from, and give a much more clearer picture to what forces her to find Lancelot's chivalry, respect and courage give to her so enthralling.
You found your best writing was not in the great bombastic moments between Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere, but of the quiet scenes between Lancelot soliloquizing about Guinevere's situation, showing a clear empathy that no other person in Camalot gave to her, not Morgan, not Merlin and most certainly not the other knights, save for maybe Percival.
It was terrible. You thought it was terrible, but the Ladies of the Club were adamant that this was truly a work of greatness and that you needed to publish it immediately.
So you did and translated it too, asking Brian for Help with it, with his skill in Italian, English, and newly learned German.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian was not amused with the finished product. "I didn't know I taught my sister how to write to use it to write this kind of… literature?"
"Brian, you know for a fact I did not intend for this to be like this, my original drafts were quite-"
"You narrative flow is horrendous, your grammar needs work, and I must truthfully protest the fact you gave Guinevere almost no agency, despite being the viewpoint character. Making her very reactive and boring." He critiqued. "I say scrap the whole thing and just make something better!"
"Brian, I've already promised the Women's Club i would publish it, at this form. I just need help translating it."
Brian's face was red. "Fine. But the next time you write something, anything like this again… I am the sole editor."
"Done." You replied.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Women's Society was ecstatic with good wishes and great greetings as you finally took the front stage and the podium.
It had been several weeks since the book was published, under the pseudonym "Fredrick Moncey." The name was actually a suggestion from Marshal De Moncey himself. Saying he wanted revenge on those British bastards who were hurting his Irish comrades.
And stealing his guns.
And that humiliation of the British was a good first step.
You cleared your throat. "Ladies, I was not expecting to use my husband's spy network to find out how much people like my book, but we decided that it was the most productive way to use them at this moment in time."
You then opened up the Pamphlet. "Please turn to page 5 for the reviews."
The Women of the British Empire loved the entire story. Without question, they adored the tale of a Heroine… being rescued by another man, even a french one who respected her wishes.
They found the story, much to your cringe, empowering to them, being able to take a bold risk of making themselves known in the relationship for their husbands and family.
Parliament immediately try to ban the book, as the men, for a lack of a better word, felt emasculated by some french writers' attempt to make them feel bad and ruin their myth.
But there were so many in circulation, that was impossible to do.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To describe the great deal of shock that such a book caused would be like describing the Revolution.
Impossible. Yet every book store sold out when it was in stock.
Truns out the Americans loves this book because the Author hates the British.
