Oooh, that sounds in-depth and promising.

You know, I've been thinking about writing an omake or a few concerning a Polish cavalryman, but I've been torn on "enlisted with a French regiment/fighting in France/Netherlands/Germany" or "member of Dabrowski Legion in Italy." I'm leaning towards the latter, since the part of the world north of Italy has Adalene.

Anyways, here's a 100 roll/Wonder Wall from Nappy B.

Yeah, Poland got partitioned again earlier this year, so the spirit is still strong, as Poland is not yet lost!
He could join Napoleon with Dabrowski, which makes sense. They would harbor a lot of hate for Prussia, Austria, and Russia. Would make for an interesting story fleeing from what remained of Poland to search for liberation!

Important thing to note about rifling: up until the invention of the Minie ball, they were significantly more difficult to load and more prone to fouling than smoothbores. A small number of rifles for sharpshooters makes sense, but the bulk of the infantry should probably keep using smoothbores.

Unless the calculation is that we only fire one volley and then charge, I suppose, in which case reloading time is irrelevant. But I don't think most engagements start at quite that close a range.

What to do with these two enemy generals? (You have +30 to diplomacy rolls for argumentation)
[] Set them free now.
[] Have the trial here in camp.
[] Have the trial here in camp, but argue for their release.
[] Have the trial in Mainz.
[] Have the trial in Mainz, but argue for their release.
[] Another choice? Write in, pending approval by QM.
Not sure what benefits each of these options would give us.

At the end of the period, you can choose a place to move to. Mainz will be under the supervision of d'Oyré, so there's little reason to stay.
[] Metz: The base was left on short notice, but the men you left there should have held their own there. Time to get the place back up and running under your command.
Definitely Metz. I want to keep building up our army. There's cannons to be bought!
More importantly, I want to stay out of the clutches of Rob.

[] Training: This battle showed that the quality, not quantity, wins fights. You can get the men more battle ready while the iron is still hot. Improve all troops' morale and discipline.
Only an action, no wealth cost? Yes, please!

[] Smoothbore to Rifling: Some of the weapons salvaged in the aftermath of this battle showed the enemy had access to a decent number of rifles. We should order more if we are to compete. Changes 2000 Infantry to Rifleman. (Rifles are much more accurate than standard muskets) Costs 2 Wealth DC: 5

[] Swift Thunder: As good as a cavalry charge is, some weapons to discharge into enemy ranks while allowing our horsemen to stay out of bayonet range could prove useful. Change 1000 cavalry into Dragoons. (Dragoons mainly use blunderbusses in addition to melee weapons) Costs 2 Wealth DC: 5
These options will give us additional options in combat, while the training will boost our army's overall combat ability. This combination is a nice all around plan, I think.

-[] General d'Oyré, engineer, general, and military governor of Mayence; perhaps he would want a Maybe that's something you have in common?
-[] Colonel Antoine Chamans, the intelligenc
This option seems to be missing some words in the middle?

Personal Actions:
CHOOSE 4.
I want to spend one action getting to know someone better, and the rest on improving our stats. We reroll failures, so we should focus on improving stats (especially stuff we'll use often, like Military) first, then focus on skills later.
Charisma and/or Oratory would certainly be good options to improve.

...Are we going to combat Swedes at one point?
That depends on how the butterflies flap.
You remember how those under him were mostly of the religious sort, but now you see their
What was the end of this sentence supposed to be?
Also, there was a word missing in one of the Social Action votes.

Sweet, my birthday.
Le Terreur Speculation

We're three days before the creation of the Comité de salut public. But, as of now, we don't exactly have the OTL mix of events that led to the Committee. The Siege of Mainz has been a complete success, and by complete success I mean barely even happened. The immediate threat to the city has been headed off (literally depending on how the vote goes) for the time being.

Wikipedia said:
Within the town the siege and bombardment led to stress between citizens, municipality and the French war council, governing since 2 April. The city administration was displaced on 13 July; this increased the stubbornness of the remaining population. Since a relief army was missing, the war council was forced to take up negotiations with the allied forces on 17 July; the remaining soldiers capitulated on 23 July.

Nearly 19,000 French troops surrendered at the end of the siege, but were allowed to return to France if they promised not to fight against the allies for one year. Consequently, they were used to fight French royalists in the Vendée region of France. They left the town singing La Marseillaise (also known as the Chant de guerre de l'Armée du Rhin).
OTL, the siege went on for months and ended with a massive French surrender. We just routed two Prussian armies and are heading back to France with a boosted reputation, a massive political and military victory not just for ourselves, but also the commanders we served with. De Beauharnais was disgraced by the loss of the siege OTL, but ITTL he's in as good as we are.
France has a string of victories under its belt, with effective and loyal republicans (as far as they know) as generals. Overall things look like their on the upswing.

The descent into the Terror came about partly out of intense paranoia. With generals defecting and losses on the front, it would make sense for the revolutionaries to start eating each other. But that doesn't seem to be the case (at least not yet).
There can still be a witch hunt, but not on the scale of OTL.

Unless Dumouriez defects in a couple days (I don't think it would make sense for him in light of the current state of things) I don't even see the basis for the committee.

If it does form, it would make more sense for it to be strictly focused on the Vendee. That's not to mention that the Girondins are in much better political shape.

Important to note: we've already derailed one of the serious military reverses from OTL that led to the Terror. Robespierre rising from just one of many delegates to the effective dictator of France at the head of the Committee of Public Safety is by no means guaranteed.

It might behoove us to pay a visit to the Jacobin Club at some point, however, if only to meet some people.

Rob might actually be better off as the Permanent Opposition, always attacking the government for not being democratic and liberal enough.

Muh Constitution of 1793 though. :(

If we go to Paris, our men still go to Metz. A General fights politically as much as on the battlefield. She has to support the army and argue the case for her strategy. Plus she has won a great battle. The laurels are waiting in Paris to be bestowed and central command will expect the respect of a swift report in person. The press will lionise her as a champion of the revolution. She won't keep Robes sweet by ignoring him. Your brother might like to see you after your battle.

Recruit. Recruit. Recruit. Be that Infantry, cavalry, artillery equally or more of one and less of another. Spend all three actions on building up a larger force. Losses have been taken and only circumstances helped the army win against a larger force. I would argue that this can be done at Mainz, on the journey to Metz and by subordinates left in Metz and by us in Paris. Officers, men and equipment all sent to Metz to be built into an army. Victory helps recruitment.

There are gaps in the abilities her commanders. She needs to get the staff right for her force. Both through training and recruitment. Right now Chamans needs his skill set rounding off with better infantry command. The General herself needs to work on her attacking command. Experience in battle can be built on through study.

So what should we do with the commanders?
What was Brunswick's conduct like during the advance to Valmy? Because just trying him for being an enemy of the people runs into the problem that the people he's committed crimes against in that regard would be his own subjects, who aren't available at present to try him. And as far as being an enemy of France is concerned, just being in charge of the invading army isn't enough; the one responsible for that would be the rulers of Prussia and Austria, and possibly their advisors.

So unless he ordered his troops to conduct themselves in particularly egregious fashion, I don't think we should try him at all. Instead, we should hold him until either he or his government provide financial restitution for any French property that was destroyed during his march to and from Valmy, and release him back to them upon receipt of said restitution.

And we should also try to make sure the money actually goes to the people affected by the invasion instead of just being added to the general coffers.

His subordinate we release to carry those terms back to Prussia.

If he accepts parole then we release him never to fight France again in this war. Common practice in this era. We would have his word as a gentlemen or he would no longer have honour.

If he refuses parole then we must detain him. It is our duty and Paris would be upset if we did not. This applies to all officer prisoners really. A trial would be an assumption of judicial authority and the choice of jury would indicate if that is military or civil authority that you claim. Easy to be seen as a dictator if you assume powers.

Take the officers to Paris or parole them.

[] Plan Random
-[] Demand an oath from them not to fight against France or its allies for the duration of this war. If they accept, release them. If they don't, you will keep them as your prisoners and take them with you to Paris: the National Convention will decide their fate!
-[] Paris: News of your victory will spread quickly. It may be best to head to Paris, both to celebrate and find out what Brian is doing. Hopefully you can catch him when he's waiting for reassignment.
-[] Recruit (Infantry)
-[] Recruit (Infantry) #2
-[] Recruit (Calvary)
-[] Private Meeting
--[] General de Beauharnais
--[] General d'Oyré
-[] Study & Read
--[] Charisma.
-[] Study & Practice
--[] Oratory.

We only have this turn remaining to have a talk with Beauharnais and d'Oyré, and they could be useful connections in the future.

Also, huh, I just realized we saved Josephine's husband here....
