Industrialization Quest

[X] Heinrich will make a few quiet probes about Sylvia's eligibility after the gunpowder demonstration, risking disapproval. A more socially adept wife could be something you need. You'll still try to court Runa if the response is unfavorable but it would make things a bit awkward.

[x] Stick with courting Runa. The dowry and connections will still be potent. Spend time attempting to get to know her and all. Maybe she was just nervous with everyone there?

I'm willing to take a risk.

We've seen nothing indicating Runa is a good match outside of pure politics. That isn't a bad thing, even if she brings nothing personally, her family is powerful, and so would be a decent match. But we do have another option, and Sylvia seems to have a talent with people, which is a box we need ticked, and puts us in a better position with the family as a whole, seeing as how Harold would become the son in law of the future head of the family.

We're under no obligation to end up marrying either of them, so making things awkward isn't a big deal if Sylvia isn't an option. As Harold's father pointed out, half the reason for this trip is to set up connections with future clients that might be interested in the weapons Harold can create. So lets find out how interested they are.

We have other options we are courting, no reason to possibly burn bridges by making us seem to reach to far.

One of the main reasons Runa was chosen was for was because she was an architect. However she only responds with simple statements?

Nah, let's try Sylvia. This is hardly the only marriage candidate. We can risk shooting high.

It is also a nobles gathering so the sort of detail that is expected and desired there is going to be different. If this was a one on one conversation and we got the same response sure, but here she could have been told to tone things down.

It is a noble gathering...but this is specifically about opening up relations with the Kalenbals. Encouraging her to shut down conversation like that seems counter productive.

Also, I doubt they would let Harold be alone with any of their viable bachelorettes without even a chaperone.

According to Harold's father, the count has a negative opinion of Harold. So while opening relations with the Bismarck family at large may be a good thing, it's possible the count wants to avoid any kind of personal entanglement with the incompetent black sheep.

You are Harold Bismarck, and to distract yourself from upcoming meetings with potential wives, a somewhat terrifying prospect, you are thinking about bees.

not the bees!
[Beekeeping: 91 + 18 = 109 = 6 successes, completes.]
yes the bees, apparently...

Harold's musings really make you realize just how wonderful and interesting everything is.

Scientific knowledge can be so fascinating once you actually understand it..

You've sealed it with wax, wrapped it in layers and layers of clothes, and then put it in a stout wooden box, just in case.

Surely he has a reason.
maybe we're going to meet a potential buyer/patron?

"He used to be a Baron like us, but was raised to Count... Two years ago?" He nods. "I recall it was rumored to be because he was supporting the King with a great amount of gold. And the Kalenbals have a reputation of great wealth at the moment, all the greater due to their performance in the war. From what I understand they came off better than most. Though if he's spending so much on construction that might dry up sooner or later..."

"A decent understanding. I met him in passing on campaign, so I know a bit more. He has a fascination with the application of technology in warfare. While he has... Already formed an opinion on you, unfortunately a negative one, you have recently created something that may very well change that."

Oh. Oh.

...ooooooh.

There's potential there.

Between the gunpowder, our projects to use it in grenades and cannons, and our contribution to that book... we DO have a good chance to get his attention.

And we're also working on steel! That will take some time, but steel would certainly be useful in war, both for cannons, and for weapons and armours in general!

And who knows, maybe we can get some funds for not-war related projects too, once we get his trust.

"Yes, one. Sylvia. Another granddaughter, but from his first son, Brandon. Runa is of Andrew's second son, Jerome Kalenbal. Sylvia Kalenbal is a bit younger than Runa, but much more prestigious considering her father is the heir. She would be a stronger tie to the Kalenbals than Runa, and come with a greater dowry. But daughters of first sons are expected to go to better matches, of course. I don't think there's a strong chance you could be hers, unless you really impress the Count."
mh.. still possible. Gunpowder IS an impressive thing to someone that never saw explosives before, and we have IDEAS on how to use it.

Maybe we could get a tentative agreement for the eldest daughter, depending on our ability to actually create the cannon in 2 years? It doesn't feel an unreasonable amount of time to ask for, though I suppose Sylvia might receive better offers by then..

You frown thoughtfully. "...This is also a lesson in diplomacy, isn't it?"

Your father just smiles at you and turns a page in his book.
nice one. He's a clever one

After that, you're shown a series of drawings by Runa. This one depicts the colorful spire towers in Ganz, this one shows the prospective finished form of the Kalenbal castle's new walls, that one is a view of a bridge from side on with particular attention paid to the arching stones and central island. They're all impressively realistic-looking in careful black ink and shaded outlines. You ask some questions about erosion and the construction process, for the last one, but Runa answers with simple and straightforward statements in a dull tone, like someone fulfilling her duty rather than talking about something she loves. Hmm.
mh.. that might be a problem. Maybe they forced her to learn it?

Worst case, we have other candidates if we don't make a good enough impression

Runa has a round face, a short and buxom figure. She looks... Uncomfortable in the fancy dress, and generally quite bored with the whole feast.
Nowadays, people usually use buxom to mean a more hourglass shape. However it used to be used for someone that is bigger overall. My question @Rockeye is rather than bigger she is robust? Does she have any calluses on her hands?

Calling her an architect could also be nobility talk for someone who prefers to build things with their hands. So rather than someone that is interested in blueprints, she like carpentry and masonry.
