The following covers what the general public knows about witches & magical girls. Some of it is wrong.

Witches

- Witches are monsters created from the negative emotion of humans. They try to spawn more of themselves by causing suicides, killing people, and generally spreading despair.
-- Normal humans cannot effectively fight witches. If you see one, run.
Soylant GreenWitches isare Peopleex-Magical Girls. Second one is probably true, good thing we aren't exactly normal.

- Witches, with only a few exceptions, are too weak to survive in the outside world. They hide within pocket dimensions called "barriers" and target those who wander nearby.
True AFAIR

- Witches can gain new abilities by killing magical girls.
- Witches will often adopt a form based on the circumstances behind their creation. For example, a witch born from the negative emotion created by a hospital might take the form of a syringe.
-- Witches are weird.
Aside from the first, which is scary if true but means nothings if false, I have to say all true though the circumstances behind their creation is different than what they think it means.
- Witches specifically target girls with magical potential, as a sort of pre-emptive strike.
Yes and No. Part of it is QB creating MGs and then bombing them into Witches before making off with their soul gems.
Magical Girls

- Magical girls are created by Kyubey, an adorable creature which the Internet has fondly labelled a "bunnycat".
-- Kyubey has multiple bodies and can operate them all independently of one another. It's unclear as to if he's a hive-mind race or just one entity with multiple bodies. Most people assume the latter.
True and who knows.
-- The vast majority of humans believe Kyubey to be a spirit created from positive emotion.
You sir have just won yourself +1 Interwebs
--- Many believe that if there's a large enough concentration of positive emotion, Kyubey will gain another body.
I'll give you an extra +1/2 Interwebs
-- Kyubey can speak, and be spoken to by MG candidates / magical girls, telepathically.
True
- Whereas witches are the physical manifestations of despair, magical girls represent hope.
An interesting interpretation. Possibly True though doubtful.
- What marks someone as "qualified" to become a magical girl is unknown.
True in the sense that only QB, and maybe a few outliers who aren't talking, knows.
- If the source of a magical girl's power completely runs out of energy, they will die.
-- It can be recharged, but few people know the specifics. Most people assume Kyubey does it.
-- If the source of their power is destroyed, they will die.
Trueish, True (though the assumption is false), and True.
-- Once a person becomes a magical girl, they cannot be turned back into an ordinary human.
True for now.
- Males cannot become "magical boys", much to the displeasure of many of them.
False.
- In exchange for a lifetime of fighting witches, magical girls get to have a single wish fulfilled. It is not all-powerful and the exact limitations are unknown.
And True to round things off.

Wrong, but of the "kyubey doesn't tell everything" variety.

-- Normal humans cannot effectively fight witches. If you see one, run.
May or may not be true, but good advice all the same.

True, AFAIK.

- Witches can gain new abilities by killing magical girls.
Unknown.

False, but due to the first bit of misinformation. Decently close.

-- Witches are weird.
True that.

- Witches specifically target girls with magical potential, as a sort of pre-emptive strike.
Heavily implied to be false.

True.

Both false.

-- Kyubey can speak, and be spoken to by MG candidates / magical girls, telepathically.
True.

- Whereas witches are the physical manifestations of despair, magical girls represent hope.
Eh, if you wanna view it that way.

- What marks someone as "qualified" to become a magical girl is unknown.
True.

- If the source of a magical girl's power completely runs out of energy, they will die.
Close to true.

-- It can be recharged, but few people know the specifics. Most people assume Kyubey does it.
Incorrect.

-- If the source of their power is destroyed, they will die.
-- Once a person becomes a magical girl, they cannot be turned back into an ordinary human.
Both true.

- Males cannot become "magical boys", much to the displeasure of many of them.
False.

- In exchange for a lifetime of fighting witches, magical girls get to have a single wish fulfilled. It is not all-powerful and the exact limitations are unknown.

- Magical girls can use magic. Duh.
True and True.

edit: Damn ninjas.

Wait, really? {Citation Requested}
I checked the wiki and it said..

"However, QB's civilization are incapable of emotions, thus they scoured the Universe for species with the most emotional potential. QB found his answer in the Earth's human females, especially those still developing secondary sex characteristics."

It has never been said anywhere, that I know of, that boys can't become "Magical Boys." From what I can see it is just more energy efficient to use girls. If you are trying to fight entropy and you have to use energy to create "Magical X" wouldn't you use that energy on the ones with the greatest potential for return? If you have to spend 10EC (Energy Credits) to get one and boys produce 40EC while Girls Produce 50EC then by using girls would would be gaining an extra 10EC for every girl you use over a boy. I've also heard that it's speculated the young girls would "Witch Out" easier but that is neither confirmed, or here nor there.

@Paradox
Good to know.

*is regretting not including a last name under the naming vote*

Which would people prefer: Rosa, Rylie, Hideaki, Kouki, Agni, or Keahi? Or something different?
(not an official vote, eyeballing it)

EDIT: Agnikai is now on the list as well. It's rather appropriate.

do those have special meanings?

Rosa: birthed from "Rose".

Rylie: nothing special.

Hideaki: From Japanese 英 (hide) "excellent" and 明 (aki) "bright".

Kouki: From Japanese 光 (kou) "light" or 幸 (kou) "happiness" combined with 希 (ki) "hope" or 輝 (ki) "radiance, shine".

Agni & Keahi: Fire.

Same for me only reversed. I like to think that having a last name that is the same as a deity of fire and knowledge can only foreshadow good things.
eh, the symbolism's good and all, but "Agni" on it's own just sounds bad to me, it's too short and sharp, like something I might say accidentally while coughing.

How about Agnikai?

...huh?
something about the structure of this post confuses me.

It's a Japanese honorifics thing. You almost always append a suffix to someone's name, the suffix "-chan" means either the person is much younger than you, or you have a fairly close relationship with them, or both.

If we live in Japan, having a family name of "Chan" would probably mean we'd get teased by the other kids for being "Chan-chan" (oh hey look backstory justification) and we'd have some recurring annoyance with people misunderstanding our name.

If we don't live in Japan, this is generally a non-issue provided the people we interact with are neither from Japan nor otakus.

In Japan you introduce yourself to those you don't know with your last name. Your last name is then used by them unless you are good friends. Therefore we will introduce ourselves as Chan Jade to everyone and be referred to them as Chan.
Are we in Japan? I don't think we ever got confirmation there. The "Rosa" surname possibility may even be evidence to the contrary.

Good point.

Edit: While that would make the "Jade Chan" name work better, I would prefer to have a name that isn't a copy of someone else's but perhaps that's just me.
