Hope will never die : a Fire Emblem Awakening quest

... *rubs temples* Did you put any thought into why you're bringing those people along or if they would even like what we're doing?

Severa on swording? Fine, maybe. If we don't screw up her swording with the Mercenary style by trying to get her to learn a second one. We're kind of very unusual with how we're learning two at once without issue.

Owain on training? Are you trying to start an argument? Kjelle and Severa in the same area as our cousin is going to end badly.

Yarne in the regency council. Not yet. It'll be good for a second opinion since he'll likely be hanging around us often as our pseudo-bodyguard if his dad has anything to say, but he'll just be lost without the background training in politics, law, and/or history.

I'll grant you Laurent, but only because we were both students of Robin. He's not even enough of a friend to have a character sheet and I honestly forgot about him.

And I was already doing Noire and Marth.

... Seriously, is it just because I didn't use a plan name?

[X] Plan Future Hero Exalt
[] Harder, better, faster, stronger: Frederick might no longer directly supervise your training, but right now physical activity seems like a liberation. Tiring yourself to the point where you can no longer think about your grief might no be such a bad idea... and so is getting stronger in order to protect those you love.
[] Swordsman of legend: the idea comes to your mind like an evidence. Marth was renowned as perhaps the best swordsman of his time, able to slay the Shadow Dragon Medeus. More than that, it is said he was the one who established the basics of the ylissean royal style that your family trains in. Making him perhaps the last person able to guide you further on this path.
[] War-time princess: the war with Plegia continues, despite the disastrous last campaign. And that is not something you intend to hide from. For now, showing up to the war room and hearing first-hand of the situation might be the best thing you can do.
- [] Ask Laurent, as a fellow student of Robin, to help you
[] We that are young: ... though you suppose you're not the only one feeling that way. You now train semi-regularly with Kjelle and Severa, maybe you could double down on that? You know they're as willing to blow off steam as you are, and desperate to improve in order to do their part when the day comes.
[] The tooth of Naga: Falchion... is yours now. As much as that thought want to make you cry, you have to press forward. When you held the blade that terrible day, you felt something. You know the sword chooses its wielder. Were you deemed worthy? Is there more to learn about the blade? You need time to figure it out.
- [] Have Marth aid you
[] In time of need
- [] Have Noire aid you
[] Special - slack off: given the circumstances, you can't help but disagree with some of your tutors over what you really should be focusing on.
- [] Sword Training (basic)
- [] History, Laws and Politics of You see (LOCKED)

Owain on training? Are you trying to start an argument? Kjelle and Severa in the same area as our cousin is going to end badly.
Owain is also, of our friend group, one of the few actually skilled enough in weapons to be a credible threat to people. Kjelle noted that (or at least something similar) at the very least, even if she thinks he's annoying.

He also maintains the same sword styles that Severa does, if anything she'd be inspired to be better than him if only just to beat his face in with it.

I'll give you the arguments, but I also think he's a good fit for what looks like a training action.
Yarne in the regency council. Not yet. It'll be good for a second opinion since he'll likely be hanging around us often as our pseudo-bodyguard if his dad has anything to say, but he'll just be lost without the background training in politics, law, and/or history.
Pretty much my thinking, since he'll be our friendguard I thought it'd be a good place to bring him along, if not Yarne there's no one else I'd think would be a good fit for the action so we'd drop bringing a friend there entirely. We could bring him along for our lessons on the subjects in question but I'm not sure that's allowed.
they would even like what we're doing?
See the vote section also said they wouldn't come along if they didn't want to or had something else going on so I see no harm in placing them on actions that may or may not pan out like I'd hope so long as they fit the action itself.

I'm glad this quest is back from the dead, I know I'm a bit late commenting on that but I did miss this story.

[X] Death from above - magic edition: then again, magic is also pretty hard to use when flying. Your aim is ruined, it's almost impossible to focus, and the pages of your tomes kept getting messed up. You have to figure out something.

Ok but seriously, @ShadowAngelBeta I am very much open to suggestions when it comes to placing our friends and collegues.

Disagreements are nice and all but if we could work towards a consensus that would be great since our plans are virtually identical anyways with the only difference being that I assigned more people and you didn't.

For that reason I have a few questions regarding who is assigned where.

1.) Severa: I don't know what her schedule looks like thus I can't really say if the training action conflicts with her training with Gregor. That said she already has some training in both styles, and while she doesn't have to train both there is thus far no reason not to yet, perhaps that'll change but at the moment I'm not seeing an issue.

2.) We That Are Young: Owain is contentious because both Severa and Kjelle think he's a bit of an annoying fop. However he is the only one not already included that has decent fighting skill that we have a character sheet for, if not him perhaps we can use this action to help raise the skills of someone else? @Macros if we brought along Cynthia could we raise her skill with spears? Kjelle might be able to help but I'm not sure I'd trust her as a trainer.

3.) Yarne: We both somewhat agree that he should be at the Regency Council but it might be too early for him, should I just remove him for now? However how can we ensure that he begins his study into the subjects that would help him here?

4.) Heroes in Training: I have no one marked for this, so unless we can think of someone who isn't already there bring no one? Actually another question for @Macros, if we assign someone who the action already says is present do we double down on hanging out with them? Can we even do that?

If you do manage to include her in those sessions, her skill with spears will indeed go up - so far, it's clear that's not something she spent a lot of time doing. If.

if we assign someone who the action already says is present do we double down on hanging out with them? Can we even do that?

Hmm. Well, I'd interpret it as perhaps paying a bit more attention to one person compared to another. It would probably change little though.

Just finished reading through everything. Loneliness of an Exalt really hit the feels

Btw is there any reason why we haven't been taking Swordsman of Legend? Seems like its something that would have been beneficial since a while ago. (I understand the crush for time now, but previously...)

That said she already has some training in both styles, and while she doesn't have to train both there is thus far no reason not to yet, perhaps that'll change but at the moment I'm not seeing an issue.
There's another issue: Lon'que is gynophobic. Even if he doesn't just nope out of trying to teach Severa and us because of the new girl, that's still rude to do to him. And mean. And a lot of other things. We only got him to teach us by forcing him to choose between his pride as a swordsman and his phobia and even then it took years for him to stop being so skittish. And he still doesn't get in touch range of us.

So I really cannot in good faith ever want to bring Severa along to lessons with him.

(Also, we were a bit of an asshole because of that when we were younger, but I would hope we know better now).
2.) We That Are Young: Owain is contentious because both Severa and Kjelle think he's a bit of an annoying fop. Similar to the above, the action is focused on Kjelle and Severa first and foremost and you're suggesting to bring along someone that they don't like. Rude.

Our sister would probably go over better, but she needs social time to unwind right now I think. This might go okay as Macros said, but I could easily see her skipping it because of the level of physical exertion we'll be pushing. And then maybe feeling bad about skipping it because it's something we invited her to spend time with.

There's a reason I'm cautious about handing out invites to things. Just the act of inviting and them refusing can change the relationship very fast and usually not for the better.
3.) Yarne: We both somewhat agree that he should be at the Regency Council but it might be too early for him, should I just remove him for now? However how can we ensure that he begins his study into the subjects that would help him here?
Having said that this would probably get him to maybe start looking at regular lessons to keep up either way. What I'm worried about now is if he'd just put himself through the meetings without saying anything cause of his personality.

Mainly cause dad was there, doing basically the same action and also hanging out with him. Now that he's not...

I'd like a proper training action with Owain, and since Owain already trains with his dad there shouldn't be a issue with the both of us being there. As with the revelation that we can somewhat focus down people if they're already involved in an action, we should focus down Severa in an effort to impart what we've learned in her general direction and spend more time with our sister.

As for Yarne, honestly there's no better place for him at the moment that I can see, and while he's a bit of a coward right now the Regency Council should be a nonthreatening action. So even if he's nervous it shouldn't be too bad, plus he won't be getting into fights there. Or at least he shouldn't. He may decline the invitation though but otherwise it seems like a pretty cut and dry action.

I'll close the votes tomorrow.

Now, technically, the original Warrior Princess plan is currently tied with its V2 version. Given the circumstances, I'll treat that as a V2 win - unless of course there's a turnaround in the coming hours.

Almost all of them, at least. While you understand the need to learn everything you can to be better prepared for your future role, you also know that there are things that you can't simply learn from a tutor. This is what you explain to Lady Maribelle when you announce her you won't have the time to attend some of her lessons, trusting in the fact that attending the regency council will be a way to learn in itself. The noblewoman clearly disapproves, muttering something about trying to run before learning to walk, but agrees that those decisions are yours to make. Unfortunately for you, she seems perfectly able to display her displeasure by working you to the bone in the classes you still follow with her.

You also meet two new tutors. Sir Duncan, a retired officer who served during the plegian war led by your grandfather, is a tall and imposing man despite his age, his grey hair and eyes giving him an almost steely appearance. His introduction to the art of warfare is solid enough, as far as you can tell, but after being tutored by the late Grandmaster, he has a tough act to follow. The first lessons are mostly about familiarizing with each other, as he tries to gauge what you already know and consequently adjust. You can't pretend you made tremendous progress so far, but you're willing to give it some time.

You're a bit more dubious toward your new finance teacher. Lord Harrowmont isn't unknowledgeable as far as you can tell, and he comes from a pretty distinguished family, but you're not sure you like the way he constantly seems to seek your approbation. Future Exalt or not, he is supposed to be your teacher, and push you hard if needs be, but you suspect he'd be too busy making a misguided attempt to please you to do that. You try to broach the subject with him, and he immediately approves and praise your wisdom in effusive terms. ... Yeah, you're not sure about this.

Also economics are incredibly boring to you. But that's another problem. At least you think you're beginning to make some sense of it.
Skill: diplomacy raised to C
Skill: geography raised to C
Skill: economics learned
+1 action this turn

[X] Sword training (basic)

Your reasons for announcing to Sir Johannes that you won't attend his lessons, possibly permanently, are rather different. Simply put, the past six months with him simply didn't seem to bring much progress, and you have reasons to suspect more time won't help in this matter. You can't blame your instructor for making the attempt, but swordsmanship is simply a domain that you're taking too seriously to stay idle. He takes the news relatively well - you even think he's a little relieved - as you go seek someone you know will be more suitable.

[X] The path of the sword never ends
-[X] Add: Owain

Lon'qu seems glad enough to see you - for someone that never looks happy at least - but you can tell his experience in Plegia still haunts him. He seems even more silent than usual, often lost in his own thoughts. Is he reliving the past battles, or trying to figure out where to go from there? You have a hard time telling. After a couple of weeks, you decide to enlist some help: namely his son, also known as your cousin. Owain is unusually solemn when you talk to him about his father, having apparently noticed the same thing - and presumably more. It isn't hard to convince him to join your efforts: he seems as eager to pursue his training than you. Was it always the case or did the recent events provide a new motivation? You're not quite sure

The Chon'sin, turned Feroxi, turned Ylissean swordsman seems surprised to see the both of you the next day but the approach seems to give results. Owain's apparent sloppiness is enough to rile him up (in fact you're beginning to suspect that at least a few of the errors your cousin displays in his stance were made on purpose in order to get a reaction) while your eagerness keeps him engaged. Slowly but surely, you're beginning to make progress once again, and your teacher seems to be more and more like himself once again.

Skill: Chon'sin style raised to C
Lon'qu seems to be doing better

[X] Heroes in training
-[X] Present: Owain
-[X] Present: Cynthia
-[X] Focus: Cynthia - Cynthia needs time and support to navigate her grief, but more importantly she needs her sister, not the Exalt-to-be.

There is another person both you and your cousin are worried for, however. From what you saw, your sister is in a dark place right now, and you're not entirely sure how to help. Well, wisely points out Owain, that's what the Justice Cabal is for! However, when the two of you come to meet Cynthia for an 'emergency meeting of heroes', all you get is a weak smile and a "sorry guys, maybe next time?"

This time you're seriously worried, and you can tell Owain is too. "What? But never missed a Justice Cabal meeting before! Even that time when you had a fever and mom ordered you to stay in bed!" His tirade is met with a small shrug. Gods, she looks so tired. Part of you wants to leave her be for now and let her rest. Yet you can't help but feel like that would be a mistake. Even your cousin's mask of bravado is gone, his face expressing naked concern instead.

"Remember when we started it? You told be you wanted to be a great hero. Is... is that still what you want?"

Your heart drops when you see Cynthia avoiding your eyes. "I-I did. But..." A sharp breath. "Dad was a true hero. And I know... I know you'll be one too, Lucy."

She looks at you, and you can see the tears. "You told me it was... 'to stand where other breaks'... something like that? But now I think... I think I can't. I... when dad died, you... stayed? Made a speech, and all. I didn't really hear it, but... I know I couldn't have. So... when I think of the times I said that... that... It feels... wrong, you know?" The words are barely whispered now. "I'm not even sure I want to be a hero anymore."

Oh dear, good shit boss but oof.

Much oof.

[] You answer...

Cynthia, from my understanding, is trying to reconcile her innocent desire of becoming a hero with what she's seen of her own role models and what they've become. Of them, Chrom is dead, and in her eyes Lucina did something she's still trying to wrap her head around, setting aside her own feelings in order to stand for the Halidom. Something laudable to be certain but in the end the two of them are still children and that's not something that was expected of them.

However Cynthia has seen all this, looked inward and found herself wanting, unworthy of being a hero as she dreamed and believed she could be.

If Lucina is to answer, I believe that dissonance needs to somehow be addressed. I'm not entirely sure how to formulate such a thing or where to begin though.

[X] "I understand Cynthia and it's okay. People like that, the ones who, as you so aptly said, stand where others break are rare. It's a very rare person who can be a Hero. But there are also little-h heroes as well, still rare and still impactful in their own, sometimes very quiet, ways. I've done that as well, helping at the church. I wasn't the Hero of an entire nation then, I was a hero to whoever was hurt then and there and needed help. Every single day I was a hero to someone."
-[X] "But I also know what it's like to be afraid Cynthia. Terrified to the bone until you can't even breath. A little thought whispering in your ear, a looming thought that tries to crush you entirely... You pulled me back from that more than once Cynthia. Sometimes with a smile, sometimes with a hug, and on those days you were my hero, saving me from my fears."
--[X] "So I'm going to keep hugging you and ask you to do something that's very difficult: Don't let your fear rule you. It's so hard, listening and learning from it without letting it rule you, I know, but... I love you. Listen to your fear and decide if you don't want to be a Hero anymore, but please, not as the Hero, but as the sister who loves you and worries for you, don't let it rule you. Don't let it take your Dream, whatever that ends up being in the end, or your happiness, or your love. Don't let it take your Light from you like it almost did me. And if you need time, that's okay too. You're hurting and afraid and... I'm sorry I scared you. I love you little sister of mine."

There's so fucking much to unpack and address. First section is dedicated to trying to rearrange her definition of what being a hero can mean. Second is connection and empathizing with her, my first two omakes are canon if I'm remembering correctly which is relevant. She's afraid, Lucina's been afraid her entire life.

Which leads into the third, asking Cynthia to do the hardest thing there is: Not letting her fear rule her. Also why so much tried to get packed into that section. At least three rewrites on that part, there's just... a lot in there to try and say. Saying that we're worried for her as family that loves her, why we're worried for her (we know what fear can snuff out given the chance), reassuring her that it's okay to be afraid and be hurting and that that pushing those into a box in the corner of her mind is not what we're asking her to do, but rather that when she's ready... well, yeah. All the while trying to dodge sounding like we want her to do as such for Lucina's sake of mind, which would be easy with as wound up as she likely is and Lucina's hand is causing this in the first place. (Basically trying to dodge "It's all about Lucina and her wants" sentiments from building or starting with her fragile emotional state).

Doubt any of us are going to come up with anything half as good.
