New Good Seed and Omake Rule Updates
Good Seed and Omake Spreadsheet Rules:

Firstly, if you have questions about Good Seeds and the like please read here. If that doesn't answer your question please ping me in thread, or on Discord.

If you write a new Good Seed, or write an omake, please update the spreadsheet if you have access.

If you do not have access, please ping a collaborator (Swordomatic, Alectai, Quest, TehChron, Insane-Not-Crazy, Humbaba, ReaderOfFate, Kaboomatic, no., BungieONI) letting them know what you want and they will update the spreadsheet here. To gain access, you will need a gmail account of some kind. Throwaway emails are fine (I'm using one for the spreadsheet), but to gain access it's as simple as sending me either your email via PM, via DM in Discord, or just in Discord's #spreadsheet-requests channel.

This is mandatory. If a Good Seed does not record their omake by pinging collabs (or just requesting access and editing things themselves - this is the preferred option), I won't give out awards. If a new Good Seed is not recorded here, they won't advance. By doing this it makes the whole thing manageable for me - it's gotten pretty unwieldy!

-----------------------

Omake Writer Instructions:

There are four fields you need to fill out.

Omake Link, which is just a link to your first omake for the turn. This makes it easier for me to read them as I do the update - without this it's tough to know off the bat which omake were written this turn, and to properly

Requested Bonus, which is your requested bonus for your omake. You can leave it up to me if you like. You can see more info in the Good Seed infopost here.

Cultivation Aims. For those following unorthodox paths - higher than 9th Heavenstage or later than 7th Dao Pillar paths. Please put in what you are aiming for before you break through. I have left it as 'default'. If you do not edit it, I'll go with that.

Turn Notes - Do you want to do something specific? Enter a Secret Realm? Help the Clan out in some way? If you have something specific you want to accomplish on this turn, put it in turn notes so I can adjust your Fate around it.

All other fields are for QM use to record character information to properly run the flow of the game.

Victor Wulf Good Seed Background
Name: Victor Wulf

Backstory: Victor was born at a bad time. Not because he was a premature birth or anything of the like. No, the problem was that he was born only fifteen years before the 100 Year Trials. A surprise pregnancy neither of his parents had expected nor wanted at the time. Who would? Knowing that in less than two decades they would likely die.

Despite this, they did their best to raise young Victor Wulf. Giving him the best education an average legionnaires salary could buy. Truthfully, they poured everything they had into the boy. Their love, their hopes… their training. They wanted to make sure that no matter what happened to them, Victor would live a successful life.

Maybe if they had focused more on themselves things would be different.

Eventually, the time came, the bells wrung, and the Trials began. And as Victor and his parents said their goodbyes, he knew, they wouldn't come back. He can't exactly say how he knew but he did. Maybe it was the way they acted. As if they were heading to a funeral. Maybe it was the look in their eyes. Ones of desperation. They were ready to die as long as they could keep those Hunters away.

And they did.

When the Trials came to an end the clan the world was desert was quiet as everyone waited for the death toll. Then the news came… and so did the cheers.

"It's a miracle!"
"The least deaths in a millennium!",
"Glory to the Golden Devils!"

It was amazing. It was the happiest Victor had ever since people in his entire life. He who had grown up under the shadow of war. He had never since what life could be like without it. He got swept up in the excitement. The least deaths? Then maybe his parents had lived! He had to make sure the house was ready for them! And he did. He cleaned the house, did all the chores -even the ones he hated to do -kept up his training, and when the legion had returned, he prepared a massive feast.

And then he waited.

And waited.

And waited.

But his parents never came home.

The only thing that did was a letter telling him they had died. Apparently, a letter had been sent out months ago but had gotten lost in all the chaos. His father died during the fall of Waycastle Acrocorinth and his mother during their retreat. They gave their lives to save those around them. He was to collect their insurance at his earliest convenience.

Victor broke down.

As the world celebrated the boy on the cusp of manhood cried. He cried and cried until he could cry no longer. And when the tears could pour no longer he stood. He collected his parent's insurance... and prepared. He was nearly sixteen after all.

It was almost time to join the legion.

Overall High Concept: A young bronzeman with dreams of greatness after the 100-Year Trials learns he has the Dull Bronze Bloodline. A mutated bloodline makes him highly resistant to qi. Making him hard to hurt without brute force or non-qi-related abilities. A powerful bloodline with an equally powerful downside. It makes cultivation harder as he absorbs qi slower and makes it harder for him to use techniques as he can't expel as much qi as others.

Starting Perk: Dull Bronze Bloodline: A bloodline that hasn't been seen in thousands of years. Beyond the basic Bronze Blood package, the bloodline also decreases the effect of qi on Victor. This greatly weakens any qi-based attacks/wounds. Examples: Qi tracking, curses, non-mortal poisons, empowered strikes (does nothing for the physical force), and qi overload. Unfortunately, this also decreases Victor's cultivation speed.

New Perk: Spiral Mapping Constitution: A constitution that grants Victor an incredibly accurate Qi-sense that runs almost fifty li (15.5 miles/25 kilometers).

New Perk: Tarnished Bronze Bloodline: A synthesis of various bloodlines and diseases that have been condensed and evolved into this new bloodline. He is now at the Alloyed Body stage of concentration, the absolute highest possible concentration for Victor's Great Realm in the modern day. In addition to its sheer physical power and resilience this grants, the Dull variant's anti-qi defenses have also been elevated and expanded. With his entire body infused by the Bronze, his qi itself carries the same power to a lesser extent, a sort of 'null-aspect' qi that specializes in degrading, disrupting, and scattering all qi other than itself. Thus, not only is his body more resistant to qi, but his techniques excel at breaking through the techniques of others. However, this dissonance has a drawback - participation in formations becomes more difficult, and the resulting projection is weaker than it otherwise would be. On the bright side, these formations, thanks to carrying Victor's qi, have the same advantages as his other techniques.

Notes: I found this quest less than a week ago. And in that time I've become utterly obsessed. So much so I was originally planning on reading every omake there was. I made a lot of progress too. And while reading I started building a Good Seed in my head. My original idea was actually a kid who found the legacy of a wizard from the Second Sea. But I wanted something a little less out there. Anyone can take that idea although! Anyways, I hope this Good Seed is okay.

P.S.: I actually came up with the bloodline before getting to the part about Ascension Blood. Crazy how things work out huh? Made me scrap some omake ideas but oh well.

Current Status: Healthy, 56 Years Old, 9th Heavenstage
Cultivation Year-Equivalent: 103 (+31)
Additional Impact: 12
Life-Saving Treasures: 1
Lifespan Enhancement: 0
Special Treasures: 0
Tribulation Enhancements: 0
Cultivation Goal: 10th Heavenstage

All Turns:

Turn 11 Fate:
Victor cultivated diligently. Madly, constantly taking missions, constantly completing tasks, entering his bloodline into experiments, and gaining Spirit Stones. Despite his lack of receptiveness and talent, he found himself with sufficient resources to push forward, reaching the 6th Heavenstage. During his time at the Battle of One-Boat Pass, he managed to save a small village by delaying an enemy who simply could not kill him, using Elemental Fire to try and do so. His resistance to the Qi spell meant he endured and managed to evacuate a hundred and twelve villagers safely to where they could be given bicycles to go south.

Turn 12 Fate: Victor found an ancient map within the Qiguai realm, the Spiral Qi Map. He managed to break it, tearing off a significant piece of the artifact. The resulting explosion fused its nature into his very being, giving him a Qi-sense that ran almost fifty li with near-supreme accuracy. It would be named the Spiral Mapping Constitution once he returned to the Clan (+2 Impact). He was wounded by an explosion from the map, leaving him Lightly Wounded. On leaving, he managed to ambush a Jingshen scion ambushing Clan cultivators in turn, taking two Flame Spirit Flowers (+10 cultivation each, +20 total) from them as his prize.

Turn 13 Fate:
As the inheritor of a potent lost bloodline variant, young Victor has often found himself sought out for samples and tests. Selling large quantities of blood or bone marrow is not the most glorious way to advance one's standing, but the returns are reliable, and bodies of Bronze replenish themselves quickly.

Unfortunately for Victor, the arts of Golden Devil doctors are known to be a bit more brutish than those of standard humans, focusing more on thoroughness than gentleness and relying on the superior healing of the bloodline to endure the treatment. As such, more than once he came into contact with poorly-cleaned needles, mixing trace amounts of hundreds of other Devils' blood in his veins over the years. The result was sad but predictable.

Victor, unknowingly contracting multiple bloodborne diseases, slowly fell ill over the course of a decade. With Qi Condensation-level treatment failing to take, Victor sought more funds so as to afford Foundation-level care instead, and so went on that dangerous salvage mission in search of more wealth.

Ranging out farther and deeper than his peers, the Legionnaire came upon an untouched stockpile of Mid-Grade Spirit Stones, intended as the power source for an entire battery of Foundation-level cannons. Not one to hesitate when presented with an opportunity, Victor cultivated madly when not searching, attempting to cure himself through the restorative transformation of the Tenth Heavenstage.

So burdened by disease and so many shards of conflicting bloodlines, his body failed to purify itself, repeatedly backsliding every time he was about to enter the Tenth and growing more infirm each time. On his fifth attempt to enter the first Unorthodox realm, Victor pushed through for a few minutes, his body working at a frenzied pace to purge itself. While he did backslide again, by that time he had not only been cured of disease; he had synthesized all of those disparate bloodlines into his own, compressing and evolving it into the Tarnished Bronze Bloodline (+8 Impact).

With this newfound power, the Legionnaire disabled many traps with ease, often triggering them on purpose and smothering them with his own body, clearing the way for other salvagers and speeding up the operation.

Welcome friend. It looks like there's a new crop of juniors rising. Don't forget to get something out there for your first omake so as to get your bonus. By the way, are you thinking of leaping in headfirst like some of us newbies and doing a secret realm this turn!

We promised wealth, land and a favor to Hong Xuan and unrestricted trade for the Simmering Soup :

Since there was no mention of repaying the Hong Xuan last turn (we did have the wealth, I'd have expected it to be an option) or any other of our concessions, I wondered if Occi might have forgotten or if the omission was voluntary.

I'd like to say it was voluntary due to Manuel negotiating a deferral of payments due to the Trials.

I actually just forgot, though - I'll use that as the in-character excuse!

Liuxian had made the wrong call. No matter how many hundreds of miles he rode, that fucking Devil still followed; how was this even worth the trouble anymore?
Golden Devils might not be the fastest, but they can run you into the ground. Endurance predators.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 67 - Interviewing the Team
Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 67
[Turn 7]
[Interviewing the Team]

Antonius shuffled through the notes and letters expressing interest once more. With one hand he carefully arranged them into a new pile and then he began to process again. Maybe this time he'd see something that would make the candidates stand out. He grimaced as a letter slipped from his hand and as he bent down to pick it up a pain wracked his immobile right hand.

Gritting his teeth, he placed it back on the table and continued his work. No. No. No. No. His fist smashed the desk in anger and the sharp crack brought him to his senses. The desk - capable of bearing the strength of a ninth heavenstage - had been bent and the notes balanced precariously on their edge.

"These are terrible." He said out loud but there was no sound in return. When was the last time he'd been truly alone? Taking a deep breath, he moved the pages off of the desk to stop them from falling. Still no one that was actually worth hiring. He thought to himself, realising that looking through it again wouldn't really help him any more at all.

Almost everyone who had applied had low enough cultivation that they would be a liability or they simply didn't have a good reputation which came to about the same result. He hadn't really realised how lucky he had been with his last group - individuals who were both skilled and trustworthy. He couldn't afford a liability, especially not another Nicomedes.

The blood path traitor had been the one to ambush him and his parents when he thought they were safe. It was ultimately because of him that he was going through everything right now. Once more, his breathing became faster forcing him to consciously bring it back under control. He couldn't afford to think about anything other than himself and his parents. Not right now.

He sighed. It looked like anyone he'd accepted were already gearing up for the war against the Blood Cannibals to go off on a wild goose chase. He put the letters aside. Looking through them one more time wouldn't make a good choice magically appear. At this point he was ready to give up and just head out on his own. He didn't have the time to wait around forever.

There was a knock on the door.

Antonius looked up at the door warily, then he looked down at the desk and sighed. There was nothing to be done about that right now. "Come in," He called after a moment's pause.

The door opened and a dark handsome face peeked in. The man turned and looked towards him, giving him a smile that looked almost devilish with his complexion and goatee. Broken desk and pain forgotten, Antonius stood up to greet the man and said the man entered his room fully, revealing a muscular body with a dark blue toga.

The man smiled at him and held out his left hand to shake. As Antonius gripped him, he felt the aura of someone in the ninth heavenstage - but his grip strength was equal to his own. A strong bloodline? He had heard some people had that advantage though his while incredibly deep, didn't provide more defence than normal armor or shields.
The man glanced over the room, eyes stopping on his desk before giving him a smile. "You'll do." He announced in a deep voice, before nodding to himself.

"I'm sorry?" Antonius asked, suddenly brought back to reality.

"It's alright," The man answered, patting his bronze bicep consolingly. Then, so nonchalantly that Antonius barely grasped it, he moved in front of the desk and took a seat. Placing his elbow on the desk and resting his cheekbone on his fist, he gave Antonius a look. "Are we going to begin the interview?"

Antonius blinked, shaking his head to clear his thoughts. "You are here for the interview?" He asked, frowning.

The man reached into his toga and placed a page on the table. It had his notice clearly on the front. "You are Antonius, yes?" The man asked. Antonius nodded in confirmation. "Then I am obviously here for the task you advertised…" He paused. "For Three Waters Valley."

Antonius closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I'm sorry," He said again. "I need a moment to process this." The man gestured his acquiescence with a wave of his hand and Antonius nodded, retaking his own seat.

"Okay," He said and the man inclined his head in response. "You are here for the job?" A nod. "And how exactly did you figure out I was going to Three Waters Valley? I didn't exactly advertise that."

"I simply asked around." He replied, making Antonius raise an eyebrow. The man grinned at him. "Now, when will we be leaving? I never figured out the exact date you were planning to leave at."

Antonius held up his hand. "Wait," He replied, frowning. "What makes you think I've selected you?"

The man gave a disdainful glance at the stack of letters which almost made Antonius and then he looked back at him. "Do you have many better candidates than myself?"

"Not particularly," Antonius admitted. "But I'm not exactly going to travel with just anyone who asks."

The man sighed. "Very well." He replied, sitting up straight. "Ask what you must."

Antonius considered the man before him. "Okay, why do you want to come exactly?"

"Three Waters Valley has several interesting treasures." The man replied with a shrug. Antonius just looked at him, waiting for him to continue. He smiled as he did. "It has a particular pool at its center said to reflect your true self. I'm interested in that. With your mastery over water, I believe we can bypass most of the barriers on the way."

"And how did you find all of that out?" Antonius asked, both eyebrows raised now. "And don't tell me you just asked around. I can see you discovering my abilities but how on earth did you know I was going to Three Waters Valley? I've only recently acquired the map and I haven't told anyone."

The man shrugged again. "Once I knew that you posted the notice, then… I did really ask around." He answered, smiling. "People like to open up to me and you'd be surprised what one can learn from someone's reading list and purchases. it wasn't hard to put two and two together."

Antonius considered that for a moment. "Okay, that makes sense, I suppose." He admitted, resolving to be more careful in the future. "How are you in a fight, then? While your demonstrated skills are impressive, I need people who can take care of themselve."

The man sat back, raised his arm and closed his fist. Antonius was suddenly reminded of his demonstrated grip strength. "Don't worry, I'm capable of taking care of more than just myself." He replied, giving him a wink. Then he grew serious. "However, should the opponent be able to overpower me, I have a few skills in reserve."

He glanced at the wall and Antonius followed his gaze. Another man stood leaning against the wall, an exact duplicate of the man in front of him. He also gave Antonius a wink before fading away. "Illusions?" Antonius asked, looking back at the man.

"Only of myself so far." The man replied, shaking his head at himself. "I do have other skills I am working on, but this is a new field for me."

Antonius nodded. "You do seem fairly competent," He replied, before giving him an apologetic look. "I'll have to look into you first but If everything checks out, I would be happy to have you."

The man nodded genially. "That seems fair." He replied, smiling. "I don't suppose I can answer some more questions myself?"
Antonius paused before nodding. "One more, yeah." He told him. "I had some questions regarding logistics. I don't suppose you can tell me what sort of cultivation resource you prefer?"

The man gave him a knowing look. "Beast Path." He answered. "The canine sub-species specifically. "

"Oh, okay." Antonius nodded. "Like these?" He held up a fanged wolf beast core drawn out of storage. "I have a few others - scorpions, birds, chicken and the like."

"A fanged wolf?" He asked, plucking it from his hand. Looking it over with an export's gaze, he nodded. "Exactly like this." Without waiting for a response, he threw the core into his mouth and began to chew with a smile. "Though this one seems domesticated. I prefer to hunt mine, personally."

"Right…" Antonius replied, blinking. He could feel the qi of the wolf core break apart and be consumed by his body. "I suppose so." He gave him a smile and stood up, extending his hands. "Until next time, then."

The man stands and clasps his hand firmly. "I look forward to hearing from you."

Antonius paused for a second. "Oh, by the way what do I call you?"

"My name is Narcissus." He replied with a smile.

"I look forward to working with you, Narcissus."

| | | | | | | | | |

The next candidate arrived more quickly and was thankfully more conventional as well. She sent in a letter with her abilities and reasons for joining which then quickly resulted in an appointment. She was fairly talented, a sixth heavenstage at forty years with only spirit stone cultivation and seemed to have a talent for stealth and illusions.

"So your name is Echo?" A nod.

"You've said here that your techniques have a side effect, limiting you to only repeating things that have been said to you. Is that correct?"

"Repeating. Correct." Antonius paused and looked up from the letter he was reading. The young girl blushed at his attention. He gave her an encouraging smile.

"Don't worry, I'm already certain I will hire you." He told her. "This meeting is mostly because I wanted to meet you in person and maybe clear up a few things."

She nodded in acceptance. "Clear. Wha?"

Antonius blinked and smiled at that, going over what he just said. "Mostly just some things to make sure we can work together properly. For example, your condition isn't a problem but it would be helpful if you have an alternate way to communicate. Do you know any signs?"

Echo nodded. "Signs." She repeated, making the symbol for the same with her hands. Satisfied, Antonius moved on to the next thing he wanted to cover.

"Your primary technique," He continued, pulling up the letter where she mentioned it. "It essentially erases you from all senses and allows you to appear as any image, sound or smell you have previously witnessed yourself. How much can you do with it?"

Echo frowned for a moment, forehead wrinkled in concentration then her expression cleared. Then she faded and Antonius found himself looking at himself. "I'm limited in images and movements, but I can twist sounds to do practically anything I want." He… she said. A moment later, his image faded and Echo returned with a sigh. "Do... much." She pointed at her head and gave him a smile. "Wit."

"Does that take a lot of concentration?" She nodded and Antonius made a note of that. "As for the rest, you seem to be trained as a scout and also seem to have a very sharp memory. Is that right?"

She nodded again. "That.. right." She replied.

"Right," He replied before handing her a spirit stone. "I was also hoping you could demonstrate your efficiency for logistical purposes." She smiled and took it, demonstrating efficiency more than even with say… Xiao Yingzi? Hmm. She was very much covering the girl's niche, wasn't she? "That should be enough, thank you."

"Thank. You." She replied, bowing her head.

Antonius smiled at her and extended his hand to her. "Welcome to the team."

She smiled back and took it gratefully.

| | | | | | | | |

"Ameinias," Antonius greeted. "You made it just in time. I was just about to remove the notice and move on to preparing for the expedition."

The young man in the fifth heavenstage blinked and nodded gratefully. "Well, I am glad I was able to make it then." He replied. "Is there anything left before I properly join up?"

Antonius shook his head. "I wanted to have a chat." He replied, to the boy's alarm. "Just a formality. Don't worry. Now, why don't we go over your skillset one more time?"

Ameinias nods. "I'm primarily a healer and an exorcist by trade." He replied. "Besides treating wounds, I can take care of ghosts, shield us from curses and the like. The trump card that I bring to the table is an old inherited spirit. It's a creature of righteous vengeance and an old curse that empowers people to fight others in proportion to how much they've been wronged."

Antonius raised an eyebrow. "That sounds quite strong." He replied. "What are the specifics of that?"

"Against someone who stole from you, it is a minor gain." He replied, in the manner of a quote. "But against one who murdered your family, you might be able to challenge five or six small realms above yourself."

Antonius raised an eyebrow, specifically noting that second part before shaking his head with a sigh. "You also mentioned taking up swords?" He asked, changing the subject.

To his surprise, Ameinias looked away in embarrassment. "It's to impress someone to be honest." He answered, causing Antonius to smile. "There is someone I like and I think they might be more interested in me if I mastered the sword."

Antonius looked away to hide a smirk. He turned away for a moment, before turning back with a schooled expression. "Is that why you joined the expedition?"

He nodded. "It looked like a good opportunity to show off what I've learned."

Antonius smiles at him. "I'm sure you'll gain a lot of fame once we clear a few ruins." He told him. "I'm sure this other person will know how much you've improved after that."

He smiled shyly. "That's my hope, yes."

Antonius nodded. "Well, I wish you the very best with that." He replied, standing up and offering his hand. "Now, before we finish with formalities. You mentioned you consumed ghosts for cultivation?"

He nodded. "It's part of the family art. My spirit consumes ghosts and then empowers me in turn as a reward." He explained, before pausing. "Ah, would you like a demonstration?"

Antonius paused and then shook his head. "No, it should be fine." He replied. "I had a friend who had a similar method of cultivation, though she could make do with spirit stones as well. I'll send you the details, would you be able to handle your logistical arrangements yourself?"

He nodded.

Antonius amiled and extended his hand. "Welcome to the team."

The man smiles gratefully and takes his hand.

We are not in a position to wreck the days of the Righteous alliance collectively. We could be if we took out the Jingshen nascents, such as with a deal with the Noble Devil alliance, but unless that happens the Righteous Powers as a whole could take us by peeling off a single nascent to join the Jingshen in messing us up. Maybe two if Yao decided to go all in with us.

Now, we can make things more painful for them, such as by increasing tariffs, and they'll won't try and destroy us but don't mistake our position of leverage for overwhelming strength. That leverage will decrease significantly once the war ends. Strength Purity benefits from having the Desert contested. They do not want the Golden Devils to win unless we turn to the Righteous Path.
We should consider what our situation will be like if we won.

Reaching a position where we can slowly strangle Jingshen would be less risky, as we wouldn't be having Nascent-to-Nascent warfare and RP wouldn't object as hard to economic strangulation as they would to actual conquest, but it still means leaving two enemy Nascents alive at our flank, a balance easily tipped with a loaner Righteous Path Nascent. On the other hand, with actual conquest, we'd be facing a peeved Righteous Path, with a nice and high Nascent capacity of 4-5 but only having two living Nascents, likely wounded, a Nascent Will, and whatever assistance Yao is willing to give.

It's a pretty tenuous position.

I'd like to extend the war, fortify the Colossus Footsteps Path foothills, take the pass itself, mess up the pass itself, or somehow further boost our Attrition. Make it a little harder for an invasion to occur from RP, get us some time until we can raise our 3-5 Nascents.

It's really good that the Bees are in the Green Scale Plains, none of the parties there will want to donate their Nascents to an invasion as long as they're being stalked. The Sects along the Great Battlefield border are stuck there, and Gemstone Justice, Ma, Arrows and Mountain Bell can't leave themselves undefended, surrounded as they are by Demonic Path. It's still worrying that we'd be relying on the war continuing and the Bees keeping their current path.

And then there's the question of when we show hostility to RP or to SPS specifically. They're getting free passage to the healing springs, they have the Colossus Footsteps Path, they get a local monopoly on spirit stones. Much of their strength and wealth is based on what we're forced to give them. And yet, if we change any of this, we'll cause more hostility from the second-strongest sect on the board and also show future powers not to trust us. I almost want them to strike first.

Edit: On an unrelated note, we've got good synergy with Heavenly Time Shatter Sect. Their techniques won't make our desert any worse, and the more land they mess up outside the desert, the more reliant others will be on our stone trade.

I was tempted to jump into the realm but I think I'll hold off for now. I just hope I get my omake done before the end of the turn!

Turn 10 has ended already. You are with me in the newbies of turn 11. There's at least a couple of weeks from the start of the turn to the end. Unless you are dropping a self contained novel I think you should be fine since even a few words count for omake.

Problem is that I would be really surprised if their techniques didn't need a bunch of qi which our desert doesn't have.

Rina Callista 40 - Starfall
Rina Callista
Starfall

The time of the Hundred Year Trials were upon the Optimatoi--the tolling of the first bells being the call to war, as the gates to the Fifth Sea swung wide--and the first wave of the Hunters emerged.

As always, the first wave was Qi Condensation against Qi Condensation--the earliest initiates on the path of Cultivation clashing with each other in displays of martial arts and battle techniques. Always the bloodiest bracket--if only from the sheer numbers involved in the affair, even if the scale tended to be small compared to the superhuman abilities of the higher realms.

The strategy of the Optimatoi had remained fixed since the ideal deployment permitted by the Hunters was discovered. In each wave, the Hunters arrived in small groups, and the Optimatoi tried to achieve what defeat in detail was possible before they could gather together in any real numbers and become unassailable to any permitted combat method.

This time around, things were different.

*Ring*

"Sixth Century, I've got twelve Hunters just popped in your patrol route, three degrees North-North West of your current position, Six more are approaching them and will arrive within thirty minutes, followed shortly by a group of twenty, don't let them consolidate!"

The Token-Sensing Tree rang again from its position before Rina Callista, legs crossed as she meditated on its readings. In her hands was a Hundred League Clarion Horn--linked with a number of receiver jewels distributed through her Legion's forces.

She heard the acknowledgement as the Sixth Century diverted onto the designated target--at five to one odds, even against the Hunters, that was a quick win--quick enough that they could fight a few of those in succession.

Much of Rina's time in the first few days of the Trials involved travelling between the fronts in her Legion's area of responsibility, meditating on the Token-Sensing Tree's data and ensuring her Legion could win the first clashes with relative ease. It did make her somewhat of a target… But there were no rules against Foundation Establishment talking after all--and the treasures she used were all reasonable spoils of war.

The fact that the Moderators hadn't struck her down proved her gamble to be correct--and so far, her area had kept the Hunters under control. Things would get dicey again when the Foundation Establishment wave arrived--but this was proving to be a fair proof of concept from end to end.

Reports from other fronts showed that the Scorpion Cavalry--of all things--was performing above all reasonable expectations too. Apparently what they lost in speed compared to a more traditional steed they more than made up for in terrifying demeanour and a multitude of natural weapons.

Provided this pace could be maintained, it was looking like--this time around at least--the Golden Devils were giving as good as they got. Still at a disadvantage of course--that was always going to be the case as long as the Hunters held all the cards--but on the whole?

No real surprises, and no real calamities either, and that was precisely what the Clan needed this year.

Rina let herself smile as she collected the Tree--absorbing it into her Spatial Ring with a gesture. She stepped back over to the Talaria, hopping into the greaves and taking hold of the controls within the arms.

"Well, it's a step up from the last go around!" Muqin Guo observed as power gathered in the Skirmish Armor--the Cauldron's own levitation ability transferred within as the war machine began to hover. "Still surprising though that you can call a bloodbath like this a good run though."

"Any run where we don't lose more than a fifth of our numbers is a good one." Rina mused. "So far, we might actually be a spot beneath that too--at least at this rate."

"It does seem a bit too good to be true, doesn't it?"" Muqin Guo continued. "The next bell won't be long from now, right? That means you too will be pursued--is it safe to be out here in the open like this?"

"Not much of a choice in the matter" Rina shrugs--flicking a switch on the controls to trigger the Detonator Engine--a small stream of powdered Spirit Stones fed into an array at the back of the Talaria

Causing her to lurch back as the Skirmish Armor accelerated, thrust generated from the release of Qi as the powder was ignited. Controlling this big thing was a hassle--but Rina couldn't look down on the added speed it got her.

She couldn't help but wonder how long it would be before she could fly on her own power? It was supposed to be the realm of a Nascent Soul…

But so were some of the powers that she had begun to touch upon as a Single Pillar Cultivator--a King crowned by her own hand. Maybe by the next trial, she wouldn't need a big device like this to jet around?

"Are you trying to make me obsolete?" Muqin Guo complained. "I mean, I certainly wouldn't object to be used as a cauldron again instead of a tool of war and transportation, but it does feel somewhat disappointing that you're outgrowing me so quickly."

"Isn't that a good thing though?" Rina grinned, as she looked forward to the distant horizon. "It means you won't need to be so worried all the time."

"Oh, I can always find a reason to be worried!" Muqin Guo cautioned. "There's always a bigger fish after all, you yourself even learned that not so long ago!"

Rina's expression darkened. "I suppose you're right,'' she admitted. "But I can't let that stop me, or slow me down. I promised to not stop until I was the strongest, and could protect everyone no matter what came after us."

The image of Athenia Callista, grinning even as she brought down three enemy Nascent Souls in the fall of the Old Territories--the pride of the Archgetes at those who completed his training. The faces of family and kin as all were rendered up to buy just a little more time.

"If the world won't change unless we're strong enough to make it change, then that's all that I need to achieve." Rina concluded. "I just need to not do anything that would keep me from facing myself in the process."

"Spirit Severing is far from the limit of what you would need to face if you want to do that, you understand?" Muqin Guo cautions, and Rina just sighs helplessly. "Maybe, but it'll be a lot easier to reach that high if I push my cultivation to the limit at each step, right?"

"Mmm, I suppose you're right. As long as you don't get crushed out first." Muqin Guo bobbles in their compartment. "It shouldn't be long until it's your stage now, should it?"

"Not long at all," Rina agrees, tapping down on the ground briefly before kicking herself back into motion--the Talaria may do a good job mimicking flight…

But really, it was more a very, very, very wide series of strides. Even empowered by Rina's greater concentration of Qi, the cauldron just couldn't quite provide enough lift to keep the Talaria in the air indefinitely.

That, and saving fuel for the Detonator Engine--there was every chance she might have to lock horns against a Core Formation punching down before this was over, and she needed every edge she could get if that happened.

She still had time to coordinate a few more groups before it was time to prepare for the next wave of Hunters.

No sense in not doing what she could.

---------------------------------------------------------

The Trials wore on, and the pattern of the early stages seemed to hold true--even as the Hunters consolidated, they found far more had been eliminated than expected. No longer could they afford to send ranging groups out to search and destroy while leaving a large force to collapse on any points of resistance. They had to stay in their groups and give chase.

Which meant all the more Legionnaires were able to slip the net and go to ground, surviving where they otherwise would have died.

But Rina was out of time, she couldn't afford to tilt the scales any further than she already had.

Because the ringing of the second bell was nigh.

She rested, leaning back into the harness of the Talaria as the Token Sensing Tree waited before her. She had topped up the fuel on the Skirmish Armor from one of the Callista supply caches just a day ago, and had been careful to avoid using it any further in the lead-up to the Second Bell.

Rina had already decided on her strategy from here on out--a lightning war, utilizing her greater mobility and her Emanation to identify, assault, and eliminate as many Hunters as she could get away with. It was as much about making a statement as anything else was after all.

Of course, she was worried about her Emanation provoking the moderators to make a move… But she supposed as long as she forced surrenders and eliminated that way--it was unlikely they'd move like they would if she butchered the Hunters while they were unable to resist.

After all, she wasn't breaking any rules this way! It was Foundation Establishment vs Foundation Establishment! That she had something of an unfair advantage didn't mean she was violating the core rules, right? It was because the Hunters were too weak.

She'd be lying to claim that she wasn't worried about this--but Rina was reasonably certain that experts of the Spirit Severing level wouldn't be bothered to make a move for Foundation Establishment juniors that were simply getting a little bit humbled.

If they did, there wasn't much hope to begin with--and Rina refused to accept that.

So she waited, with the tree rustling in the wind before her, eyes closed as the final seconds ticked down.

Rina's eyes snapped open, the Token Sensing Tree retreating to her Spatial Ring. An immediate reaction right before her~

"Ah, how convenient, I didn't want to waste time"

The figure standing before her was a young woman, clad in white and red--a satisfied smile on her face as she raised a strange wand.

"Die"

The wand flickered with light--and Rina grunted as she was picked up by the force of the attack--the Talaria's barrier flickered for a moment before dying, leaving the rest to be discharged right over her heart.

Fortunately, it had done its job properly, and dispersed much of the attack's force--but Rina still found herself forcibly stabilizing her cultivation base as she drove her Blood of Gold to the limit.

The power eventually was exhausted, and Rina could finally take a breath of her own--she couldn't even see the attack that had come--but the level of force…

Core Formation? From the second bell?

"That's a surprise…"

The voice came from behind Rina this time--the Golden Devil whirled around--the blade of the Talaria igniting to its full power in the same motion.

Only to be caught by an upraised hand.

"I had been expecting this to be a little clean up of a demon that got lucky." The girl mused--the ray of blade-qi halted by white light emitted from the girl's hand. "It's quite rare that I have to strike twice, you can feel content in hell."

Her free hand no longer held a wand of some sort--instead, a curved sword of peerless make swung out at Rina--shattering the ray of blade-qi, and tearing deep into the mechanisms of the Talaria.

Mechanisms, yes--but no more than that.

The destroyed limb ejected, freeing Rina's right arm as she struck forward with the other arm. The girl's expression widened slightly as the Javelin Launcher spooled up.

But only slightly.

The Javelin Launcher sparked as Rina fed qi into it--and the entire edifice self-destructed.

"Points for effort, but garbage like that doesn't even qualify to touch my clothes." The girl says, her expression returning to normal. "Now that you're done resisting, please die?"

Her eyes flickered, and some buried instinct in Rina's heart brought her to activating the Detonator Engine, driving her aggressively to the side.

Which was all that saved her from the column of divine fire immolating her, simply appearing on her current position.

"You're being a nuisance…" The girl admitted at that point, languidly approaching as Rina tried to get her bearings. "The outcome of this match was decided from the moment I, Aasmi Bhardvaj arrived here."

"Yet I'm still here, and largely unhurt." Rina subdued her own concern beneath an air of confidence, speaking to the girl in her own tongue. "It does seem like things aren't quite that decided yet, is it?"

The girl's brows go up. "It speaks a civilized tongue?" She muses. "Still, don't get ahead of yourself, even among the Fifth Sea, those who could qualify as my superiors in my own realm simply do not exist." Her wand returns to her hand, lazily held to her side. "Normally this sideshow wouldn't qualify for my attention, but the Pillar issued a special mission." She tapped her wand. "It is enough to move even those among the Sage Clans."

Rina frowned--even as she ejected the second totaled arm of the Talaria. "I wouldn't call a genocide to be a sideshow, I think."

Aasmi sighed. "Truthfully, I too think this Trial is a waste of time." She shrugs, her two weapons shining in the light of the sun. "It would be far better for you to be put out of your misery than to drag it out for petty profit" Rina's brow twitched. "But in the end, I suppose a reliable source of Good Karma is worth a little suffering."

"It's easy to say when you're not the one suffering." Rina sneered--her cultivation base roiling as she suppressed the black rage that began to well up at that remark.

"True, but in the end--if you did not deserve this fate, I would not be here to mete it out upon you." She brought her weapons up into a casual fighting stance. "Now then, defend yourself--or don't--the result will be the same either way."

Rina didn't believe in simply defending herself when she could be attacking instead.

The bronze ring shimmered into view behind her--the Detonation Engine drove her forward--and from her Spatial Ring emerged a short spear and the silverine gladius she had been given by Bright Iron before leaving. Her speed was beyond her normal limits--and while she had lost the integrated weapons of the Talaria, it still could enhance her mobility in its current state.

She descended on Aasmi Bhardvaj with the force of an avalanche--her Emanation bearing down on her.

And…

"Is this it?"

The Silverine Gladius was caught by Aasmi's curved sword, finding itself utterly surpassed. The short-spear was briefly evaded--before a casual glance saw it ignited and burned to ashes.

And Rina's Emanation simply passed through as though she wasn't there.

"A curious technique, but if you hope to shake my spirit, you'll find yourself disappointed" She observes, holding Rina back with her sword--even as the scholarly girl took her gladius in both hands. "Those who bear one of the Seven Heavenly Stars of the Great Sages are utterly beyond petty soul and dharma attacks from those in the same realm as themselves."

She flicked her wrist--and Rina found herself flung back again--seven burning dots of heat scraping against her skin, burning through her breastplate and faltering only as her blood rallied against the assault. Aasmi wasn't content with simply witnessing this outcome though--she swung the wand in her hand--and dozens of glittering lights filled the air.

Glass?

She twirled her wand after this--and Rina understood what was coming next.

Hundreds of rays of light flashed into being for a moment, purifying light refracted again and again and again, closing off all possible avenues to escape before descending on the target at hand. Desert sand melted for hundreds of yards, and the wind blew past Aasmi--who slowly lowered her wand.

"Hmmmm…" She hummed, gesturing sharply as she witnessed the ruins of the Talaria Skirmish Armor at the center. She nodded to herself, and advanced in to confirm the kill.

She poked at the wreckage, ignoring the flashing light from one section of it (Not even noticing as the rapidly accelerating light suddenly seemed to flicker, and then calm down once again). Then she frowned, and looked up into the distance.

"Clever, leaving the wreckage of your little toy behind, using a cauldron to block my attack and then using a treasure to cloak your aura for a moment as you flee." One of the edges of her mouth perked up--a hint of a smile.

"Well, if you're going to make me have to chase you, then don't complain about what happens because of it."

Her red mantle shines, and she lifts off from the ground, pausing only for a moment to get her bearings, and then heading off in one direction.

Shortly after she left, the device Aasmi had been tampering with switched back on--and the wreckage ignited in a terrible conflagration--enough to cripple even a Core Formation if delivered at close range.

It was a shame that she was too far gone by then to notice.

---------------------------------------------------

Since then, Rina had been on the run--she delivered a top priority message the moment she had a second to breathe, warning everyone of the presence of a King-class Fifth Sea Foundation Establishment Cultivator--and to not risk engaging her unless you had a means to escape from a Core Formation level fighter.

She needed backup if she was going to turn the tables here. The handful of volunteers who took a poke at Aasmi over the course of the pursuit managed to tease out some small degree of information at least--she could strike down anyone beneath Core Formation in an instant it seemed--either at a distance or from close up. She had a treasure that let her fly seemingly freely, and her senses were terrifyingly sharp. Minervina Barda even tried carrying out her usual routine and found that poison techniques failed utterly against the self-proclaimed Heavenly Star. There were also some choice curses in the battle report here and there.

As for the other members of the Thirteen who had reached Foundation Establishment… The Ninth Prince was--allegedly--dead (Though given how he was trying to foist off one of those trinkets of his on her a while back, she was halfway convinced this was just him faking his death again and he'd show up within half a century again no worse for wear), Wei Feng was apparently busy minding the previous generation in some big gambit to deal with a premonition and making sure they didn't hurt themselves. Magnus was busy digesting more poison than actually existed and was otherwise occupied on another front…

It really only left Jin Muyi--once Xiao Yi--and he had apparently decided to make his stand at Pleuron, baiting the Hunters into him in a grand, heroic gesture. Then he dropped out of contact--and with Pleuron evacuated by now, nobody was sending reports as to whether he was dead or alive anymore.

Still, he was the mightiest of Rina's generation, and if he was still fighting, she could suppress his opponents with her Emanation, and he could provide some much needed firepower against Aasmi Bhardvaj.

Simple, right?

"So where the fuck is he!" Rina cursed, balanced precariously on top of Muqin Guo as she surveyed the empty city. "He's not dead, the crowds of Hunters are gone, but there's no bodies either--or horrifying hell jungle!"

Because of course he was nowhere to be found, here, now, when she could really use some backup!

Admittedly, this was something of a long shot--the reports about what happened when someone actually attacked Aasmi was… Disturbing--she didn't even need to react to attacks, because she was so damn lucky that any attack would find itself miraculously turned aside!

Even if Rina got the entire roster of the Thirteen here--would that even be enough?

She hopped down from her perch, landing in the town square. It had been rebuilt well since the siege of the last Trial. Going from a near shattered fortress into a symbol of defiance, re-established more out of spite than any real virtue. To prove that an impossible victory mattered even if it could be undone a hundred years later.

Was the so-called Heavenly Star going to just leave after she took Rina's head? Who could even stand against her afterwards? She had the power of the Single-Pillar Foundation… And yet the best she could do was barely preserve her own life with some tricks and flanking attacks. Muqin Guo could only take a few hits from that light of hers--and the Forge Spirit couldn't even scratch her even if she caged her. If anything, it just empowered her further!

The Talaria was destroyed--and the self-destruct she had set failed… Presumably because of that ridiculous degree of Luck.

So how could Rina turn this around?

She looked out into the walls of Pleuron--she at least had the city here--that was better than nothing after all. It was a home field advantage!

But how do you beat someone who's protected by causality itself? Who has power beyond their Realm and utterly negates any advantage you could possibly bring to bear?

Rina rubbed her temples, and forced herself to look backward. A hundred years ago, she and a small company of others stood here, in this place, and did the impossible. They had taken down a Core from Qi Condensation here! They had defied the nature of the world itself!

If she couldn't even take down one overpowered waif in the same realm as herself, then what was she doing with her life?

She had the answer--she knew it. She just… Needed… To…

Her eyes drift to the fountain at the heart of the town square--just like that time in Sha Yu City…

Kinslaughterer said something then, didn't he?

The path of their master, but not walking his Dao… But wasn't the Dao and the Path the same thing?

Rina's eyes widened. "No… It isn't… Not entirely…"

What were the four methods of Cultivation?

Absorbing the energy of Heaven and Earth to purify body and spirit
Absorbing the energy of powerful beasts, purifying it and using it to strengthen the self.
Absorbing the energy trapped within the earth, trapped in spirit stones.
Absorbing the power and spirit of humans to augment the self beyond all limitations.

"They're all the same…" Rina whispers as the thoughts go through her. Cultivation--all of it--from the top to the bottom ultimately had one thing in common.

It was consuming something, to empower the devourer.

The only difference was one's preferred form of repast. There was never any way to Cultivate without devouring something though!

"Then…"

The Single-Pillar Foundation can only be touched through consuming resources far, far beyond what is required to fully purify the body. To reach beyond body and soul and affect the Dao itself.

But this? This was deeper than the Dao--even the Heavens couldn't create power from nowhere, could they?

Even the Heavens were subject to the Law of Consumption.

"What are you smiling about?"

Rina looked up to Aasmi, not even noticing her own grin. "Oh, you know, just thinking about how I was going to turn this around on you."

"Hmm." She nodded. "You've led me on a merry chase, I will admit." A ripple behind her--a Dao Emanation beginning to manifest. "But I've wasted enough time chasing you."

Rina tilted her head, and her smile widened--touching on a rictus. "Mmm, you didn't stick around to murder most of my kin even after they tried to slow you, so I'll do you a favor." She turns around and raises one hand in front of her. "If you withdraw here and now, nobody else needs to be hurt."

Aasmi's expression wavers. "You can't possibly think you can change matters--you've not made any breakthroughs in the past months, and the difference in power between us is like night and day. Don't insult me with your bluffing."

"It's not a bluff," Rina warns. "I just got a piece of enlightenment. I know your weakness."

"Weakness?" Aasmi seemed genuinely puzzled at that statement. "For a Heavenly Star, no such thing exists." She shakes her head. "Regardless, I won't be swayed by your trickery. Well done for surviving this long, please die."

She lowers her hand--and a pillar of starfire begins to form.

Rina exhales--and the [Halo of the World-Lord] manifests behind her, rotating as it typically does.

Then it halts in place--the runes inscribed within flickering for a moment.

Rina inhales.

And the [Halo of the World-Lord] rotates in reverse

The pillar of starfire flickers, wavers, and turns to dust as the power of the Single-Pillar seizes it. The power flickers for a moment--before being caught up in the vortex that was Rina's cultivation base.

Rina exhales--and the Halo returns to its normal operation.

"Thank you for the meal" She smiles, and looks back up to the now genuinely puzzled Aasmi Bhardvaj.

"What… What was that?" She asked, a trace of concern in her voice. "The power just… Vanished."

"The thing is… That power you used--it's not yours, not yet." Rina explained, stepping forward.

A spar of stone erupts from the ground before her, forming a stairway that Rina climbs--step by step, up to Aasmi's level. "You can maneuver it, you can cajole it, you can ask it--and it'll accomodate you. Because that's what it's for… But it's not yet your power. And that means you don't have perfect control of it."

"What are you…" Aasmi wondered, and Rina smiled beatifically. "And because it's not your power, it means that there's not any difference between that power and the ordinary energies of Heaven and Earth."

Her Silverine Gladius was drawn--and from the fountain at the heart of the square came streamers of water, gathering around the edge, extending its reach.

Then it began to oscillate, a high pitched whine filling the air.

"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting." Rina said. "Let's have a fair fight now, shall we?"

The Wind howled, and Rina Callista propelled herself from her perch into Aasmi Bhardvaj.

To her credit, the Heavenly Star was still a veteran of many battles, she brought her curved sword up to match Rina's gladius--and this time, her power found itself matched. The humming whine of a high pressure water flow tore and ground at Aasmi's blade--pushing her back into one of the many larger buildings of Pleuron's core.

Aasmi Bhardvaj reacted quickly--close combat was no longer to her advantage with her opponent's new strength. She raised her wand, and bursts of purifying light fired off one after another--bursting and exploding in an area around Rina--a bubble of non-space that absorbed the hail of fire--until she closed in again with another forceful blow. Smashing Aasmi through the third floor down into the cellar.

"How is this…" Aasmi tries to gasp out--but finds the wind driven from her as a spike of stone forces her back up and into a nearby alleyway. "How are you doing this!"

"It's about Laws--or Dao, or Dharma--whatever you want to call it." Rina explained, grinning as her power of Wind threw her down into the alleyway--dancing on her toes as she pivoted down into Aasmi's position, locking blades again in a spray of pressurized water and her own innate Strength. "It's about Truth! To understand the nature of the world, and seek to teach it a lesson in turn!" Pistons of Stone fired, the ground erupting forth beneath Rina's feet to give her that much extra force--enough that Aasmi's own arms buckled and let her make a glancing cut. "Ordinary Cultivators find enlightenment bit by bit, growing as their understanding does. People like us though? We get a deeper understanding! We touch on something fundamental to the world, and incorporate it into our understanding!"

Aasmi's cape shines, and she empowers her treasure to let her sail into the skies--to avoid Rina's greater strength when joined with the Earth below. She lurches and cries out as a whip of liquid fire catches her by the ankle--Rina's free hand holding the other end as she pulls her back down slamming through three other buildings as she does so. "If it's a contest between Truth though, the one that incorporates the more fundamental Truth wins! Compared to that, what's a Truth of the Heavens compared to a Truth even the Heavens have to answer to?"

"That's impossible!" Aasmi cries out. "There is nothing beyond the Heavens!"

"Then…" Rina asks, extending her arms and inviting attack. "Where, precisely, did my people come from?"

There's a pregnant pause--and then Aasmi Screams! An undulation of power freezing space around her--a shining mote of Light emerging from her forehead. "I'll have your head for this!" The Sage-Descendent screamed. "This humiliation won't go uncha~"

Rina Callista was right in front of her

Aasmi froze--and Rina's free hand clasped around the projection.

The world went still.

"Something like this…" Rina warned. "Isn't something that children should have."

She Breathes in

And the Purifying Heavenly Star begins to move.

"No… No. No No No No NO!" Aasmi begins to panic as she feels her connection to the Heavenly Star loosening. "That's.. That's not for you! That's not for you!"

"It's not exactly yours either, is it?" Rina pointed out. "Well, whatever, I'm not planning on keeping it anyway--but you know what they say… Winner takes all, right?"

Rina pulled again--and she felt it now. There was enough power in this…

She could surge her way to Core Formation right now! If this even lasted an hour, maybe even an immediate surge to Nascent Soul! Her goal was directly in reach!

Which is why she shouldn't feel that surprised and disappointed to feel threat building on her person.

She looked up into the sky to witness the clouds--Tribulation would be her first guess, except…

No, there wasn't a trace of vitality to be found here--this was purely here to kill her.

She looked down, and saw Aasmi--pale and sweating, vanishing from her grasp, her Heavenly Star going with her. Her Token wasn't broken--but apparently that just didn't matter

"Stingy" Rina pouted. "It's okay to throw and curse and abuse us, but the moment we get an advantage all of a sudden it's time to break things up?"

This wasn't even like the Five Elements Tribulation--this was pure killing will--enough to kill a city in a single stroke.

"What a waste…" Rina deflated, the power she hadn't yet digested gathering in her hand. "Well, okay, we'll do it your way--but don't go sending her again unless you're willing to pay a price for it next time, got it?"

The bolt of Divine Punishment descended--as Rina Callista sent the starfire of the Purifying Heavenly Star back at it.

The Bolt parted around it, saving Rina and the area around her.

The rest of Waycastle Pleuron? Not so much.

It was said that many letters of apology were sent after the fact to various dignitaries here and there, as the bolt of Heavenly Punishment had scorched the landscape for miles around.

But Rina knew it was only going to be a temporary reprieve--she had never known a Chosen being willing to accept defeat--however fleeting.

She'd need to bring her Pillar as close to perfection as possible, in the time she had left--and maybe this time, she'd be able to finish the job.

The Matter of Kalki
For those who haven't, this update is regarding the three megacollab omake, starting here. Roughly 40,000 words in total, so if you decide to dive in, be aware.

This one won't be a big one compared to last Trials - rather, a few words on what happened at the end, with the contributions of each omake writer noted.

You won't understand the below if you haven't read the three megacollab - so feel free to skip this if you haven't!

---------------

Kalki, the virtuous one. The demon seeking the path of Blood and consumption. He had been called both in his time, and it was his plot to ascend in the Third Sea to the Single Pillar stage that left him endangered.

A plot which succeeded. Fourteen scions of the Optimatoi stood against him, and as he ascended he began to tear through them like so much tissue paper.

Still, they had to attempt to stop him, for he intended to slaughter all the Devils he could to gather good karma, to balance the weights that lay against him.

In twos and threes they came, their allies working desperately to forestall Kalki's own as they aimed as his token.

Fangxu was the first to fall, Carvos striking in to attempt to save her. He did so, and upon throwing her back rushed at Kalki, serving as a vanguard to the others. Despite his personal desire for battle, his Dao was not truly honed, and it was a mere effort of will on the part of the Fifth Sea cultivator that saw him falling back, bloodied and bruised and unconscious.

The rest bought time, fighting his men so that they might survive.

Four Foundation cultivators against four, briefly. Supported by the Dao-might of Kalki's Pillar, it was not at all an equal battle.

Kurma against Xiuying, using her mastery of Sword Law to persistently threaten Kurma. Sword Law was powerful, but his set of treasures deflected and, and slowly she waned, what had been an all-out offense turning into a savage beating. As she flagged, Ulysses supported her, the Qi Condensation juniors coming in from each side to buy a little more desperate time.

Yingzi against Rohini, her raw power against talismans and the like, every seeming-victorious blow turned aside as Rohini simply threw her back again and again, pulling out talisman after talisman until Yingzi was exhausted. Gaius's support meant little enough, and after trying to help her, he found himself thrown aside.

Prakash faced off against Zeno, though this battle was quicker than most. Zeno found himself pushed back rapidly, and had it not been for the intervention of both Maria and Amaranth he might have lost entirely.

Magnus's poisons were a poor matchup for Aavatri, array after array turning them aside. It was in truth the relentless defense of the four that made it so difficult - each distracted and engaged one of the Foundation Experts, and without swift victory there could only be slow defeat. Both Anuka and Diomedes joined the attack at the last, buying just enough time for the battle between Wei Feng and Kalki to finish.

Wei Feng made it to Kalki, striking at the Single Pillar adherent.

He was butchered mercilessly, of course. But Wei Feng had been butchered mercilessly enough times that such a thing was barely notable. He rose again, and again. Each time rising weaker, Kalki fighting with more and more viciousness each time. The eighth time, Kalki began to simply beat him into the ground as he rose, attempting to dismember him, carving him apart.

On the sixteenth time, Wei Feng was more bone than flesh, still moving, still somehow - improbably - breathing. The others were all continuing their fights, hopeless battles to try and buy him a chance at the prize.

In frustration and anger Kalki lifted Wei Feng above his head with one hand, his other readying a final fatal blow. Gathering all the strength of his Pillar into a strike, Wei Feng would not survive this, no matter his blood. Still - for the briefest moment, his token showed. Spitting blood defiantly, Wei Feng aimed with his one remaining eye, his flaming blood searing the token.

The token shattered, and Kalki was returned to the Fifth Sea. In sudden disarray - and to support their friend - the others left, knowing that a Single Pillar adherent in the Fifth Sea would be hunted, and he would need all the support he could get.

The matter was ended here, at least for now.

Year 200 End - Council Meeting
Manuel stood before his Council, triumphant. There was no other way to describe his feelings. The horrifying gamble he had taken, the lives lost... to make that choice was miserable, but to make it and have it fail would have been immeasurably worse. This was a victory. For all the dead, this was a victory the likes of which they had not seen in millennia.

They were in possession of much of the desert. Their population swelled, and the trials had not even outpaced the natural growth of cultivators over the last twenty years! The Clan had done well. More wealth, more tariffs, more cultivators. More power. More threats, too. The Single-Pillar Fifth Sea cultivator and the Heavenly Star wielder had both been reported to him. He had tried to scry on the girl ever-so-briefly and had suffered for it. He had taken the tiniest peek and his skin had been melted, his face simply misshapen as he was still working it back into shape. If he'd looked for longer, he suspected he might have died. Thankfully he managed to get out without serious injury, but still. He did not in the slightest understand the Heavenly Stars, but he knew enough to fear them.

The Council were all grim-eyed yet confident. Paperwork was ferried in and out by Foundation Experts, each one a trained bureaucrat. The pace had slowed - the desperate needs of preparation gave way to the slow recovery, where decisions could be measured and thoughtful. No longer, he thought, would he consider them his "New" Council. Rather they were his Council, leal and competent.

There are basically four main Mechanics in this quest.

(1) Choices. Your Clan Council will ask you to make a call on something. Mostly they won't do this - they're competent enough to handle things on their own, but sometimes they will. You'll see 0-2 of these per turn, on average. They're usually pretty straight-up binary choices.

(2) Focuses. You choose in general what the Clan should focus on for the next 20 years. Building up for war? Training new disciples? Carving more arrays? More trade? Focuses don't prevent you from doing everything else, it's more 'here's the one thing we should really get done'. Focuses are mainly mediated by your personal skill levels and specialities.

(3) Actions. What you, personally, do. Usually mediated by skills, but often by Cultivation level - especially when it comes to combat. You can always Write In Actions. In fact, writing in more complex and well-thought out Actions will positively increase your chances of success.

(4) Purchases. What wealth the Clan has, and what your Council want you to spend it on. They'll usually come to you with the thing they want most. No micromanagement, just 'here is the big-ticket item I want'. These will often (but not always) persist between turns. Wealth is expressed in terms of Years of Income Saved. You can take as many of these as you can pay for! Keep in mind, though, if you spend all your money, you won't have it in future for dire situations.

All voting is Plan Voting. Make a Plan if you want, or just vote on someone else's! You can vote on as many Plans as you like! Approval Voting, baby!

There is a 36 hour voting moriatorum! I'll post a threadmark when the vote opens!

Manuel had returned to the Dawn Fortress. Yao Zhihao was assisting him, as was her wont after the Trials. He hadn't asked her, but she seemed to be enthusiastic in helping him. She had no desire to return to the Great Battlefield, after all. He was surrounded by thousand-year old arrays in a room with more paperwork than space, the eighty-year old tables they'd brought back to the main Council chambers still offering protection against mental effects and poisons. Over the years Destasia had completed many stories, carving words smaller and smaller within other words. What had started out as a romance between Manuel and Altar Lord's clones had somehow become some sort of terrible cheap novel in which he was some sort of Young Master sleeping with each of his Councillors, as his one true love Yao Zhihao fought desperately for his attention. The latest chapter had Yao finding out about his perfidy, and how he had betrayed her to make love to Heraclius - apparently the man had found it hilarious and had offered more and more lurid dialogue Destasia had taken on with gusto.

Underneath the desk was erotic fiction that had been written as to form a picture - it was very anatomically incorrect. Not in size or the like, but rather that Destasia had gotten distracted and given him a trio of snakes instead of genitals, which were entwined around Heraclius's own spear. Literally, a bronze spear. He wasn't sure if this was Destasia's mind working in its odd ways, or the literal result of experiments she had run, but he suspected he'd be happier not knowing.

It was of course paramount that he cloaked the scenes using his Dao from the eyes of those not on the Council. After all, the dignity of the Grand Elder was important for the Clan's morale!

There were many decisions to be made, each echoing into the future from now on. The tables made it a little easier to check his Elders for mental corruption and subtle poisons without potentially activating them, but there had been no attempts in recent years, surprisingly enough. He had thought Old Jingshen would've retaliated, but the man had drawn deeper into his territory, doing something Manuel had been unable to uncover.

Around sat his Councillors, who were skilled and valuable pieces on the gameboard. Eighty years ago, he merely hoped they'd be able to carry out their duties. Sixty years ago, he had been satisfied to call them useful. Forty years ago they worked together, administration and disciples and intrigue all still finding the perfect way to work with one another, but shared adversity had brought them some comfortable patterns. Twenty years ago they had been a well-oiled machine, but now they worked together with single purpose.

"Report."

Manuel's voice was quiet, heard only by his Council. As it left his lips, a billowing shape of shadows rose and surrounded them, spinning and expanding as it painted itself onto the walls, seeping into the floor and the ceiling. The same trick as decades before, only now it obscured them from a number of useful tricks, including the ability to peer into the past at their council session. It had to be renewed every few decades, but information security was worth it.

First was Casia Zimisce, a Great Circle Core Formation cultivator. Rail-thin and severe-faced, she looked as though she had perpetually swallowed a lemon. Her intimidating posture and expression aside, once she spoke one wouldn't pay attention to them, as she set everyone around her at ease. Casia was Stratopedarches, or in more common terms, the Elder of Administration. To her fell the duties of managing mines, herbs, cities, camps - all manner of resources flowed through her hands. In the last twenty years she had spent much time organising the economy of the Clan, preparing for the year of terror to come. She had done an admirable job, and was faced now with a long-term challenge - recovering from the Trials.

"Archegetes. In terms of wealth things have gone reasonably well. We have thirty million Spirit stavraton saved, though I could easily spend every single one of them. The amount of construction work, road construction, array expenditure, fortifications..."

Her voice trailed off.

"We also have a request from the Hong Xuan Clan to repay their debt for the aid in the war."

She ground her teeth.

"They did little enough and we offered ten million Spirit stavraton! Oh, it'll pay off, but you'd think they'd know what was good for them and let it go..."

Currently the Clan has 30 Wealth (+7 from last turn, +10 from raiding, +15 from income, -1 from inefficiency penalty, -1 from Strength Purity concessions).

[ ] Repay the Hong Xuan (10 Wealth) -
Your vassals will look on you more kindly - there are always demands, but showing your good faith keeps them in line. Trust is a necessity for those who seek to rule.

[ ] Defer the payments (No cost this turn) - While the Hong Xuan will have no choice but to accept this, delaying your payments will make you less popular with the Hong Xuan by some measure, and degrade the trust your vassals have in you a little. You will need to repay them eventually, of course.

-------------

Second was Kleisthenes Sarantapechos, a Great Circle Core Formation Elder. Dead Euphrosyne's twin sister, though less talented in cultivation. She cultivated a rare Yang attribute technique, and went by a male name, and had previously worn a male body to aid in her cultivation. For her, if she had not cultivated her Yang technique - she never would have risen into Core Formation. Such a thing was uncommon among your Clan, but not unknown. In recent years she mastered the Yang part of her technique, and managed her Yin-Yang Revolution Method, returning her to the body of a woman once again, bringing her into the Great Circle of Core Formation. Perhaps another woman would've returned to the beauty she had apparently been, but Kleisthenes maintained broad shoulders and large muscles, and had refused to give up a single inch of height. Then, it was rare for a Core Formation Elder to seek change.

She is the Hetaireiarches, or in common terms, the Elder of Diplomacy. To her fell the duties of managing external powers and other Nascent Souls. She often complained about her lack of talent, and she and Manuel were reasonable friends. She had avoided Manuel after the Trials, even moreso than usual. It was not rage, Manuel thought, but guilt at her judgement of him. He aimed to reach out to her again.

"Archegetes. News is dire everywhere. The Great Battlefield was struck with a victory on the part of Strength Purity. The Wei Princess came out of closed-door cultivation and drove four Nascent Souls from the Noble Devil Alliance into direct retreat - apparently all by herself - allowing a massive push on the part of the Righteous Path. Gemstone Justice, Mountain Bell, and the Ma Clan have all linked up, forming a sort of triangular-shaped safe territory. As soon as she left isolation, though, the Devil Twins and the Demon Grandfather-"

She cut off at the look on Manuel's face. In truth, it hadn't been the nicknames. Her voice was like water running down a stream, like chimes in the wind, light and fair and free. He wondered if it had been her original voice before she began to cultivate. He was still not used to it.

"Sorry, sorry."

She shook her head ruefully.

"The three Nascent Souls of the Devil Bees struck many times, at Joyful Blacksmith, Great Drunkard, Divine Tunist, Chuan and Yu Clans. Everywhere but the Saber Palace. They struck lightly, forcing each power to retreat into itself. It seems obvious enough that they're preparing for a second strike on the Saber Palace."

She shrugged.

"Strength Purity are once again offering tremendous concessions to send array masters north. Forgiving our loans in full - all the concessions we made to them wiped out. Apparently the situation is dire enough they'll take anyone without pretense, though they want more than last time. We'd need to deploy three or four Legions for two full decades to get those concessions removed."

[ ] Send the Clan's best Array-Engineers as well as several Legions to the Great Battlefield.

Regain +1 Income per turn as the Strength Purity concessions expire. You can expect to lose at least a thousand Qi Condensation cultivators, however, along with ten Foundation experts. Small chance of losing a Core Elder.

[ ] Don't

Strength Purity will have to do without you. Recovering your strength matters more than the war in the Plains.

-----------

Third was Xie Xinya, a Great Circle Core Formation Elder. She is beautiful, long black hair framing an oval face. Her lips glossy and eyes rouged, she was certainly the cultivator on the Council who cared most about her appearance. Since her ascension into the Great Circle she had grown more alluring, and had offered to marry Manuel no less than three times. He could see the attraction - marrying his Elder of Intrigue would make it easier to tie her to the rise and fall of the Clan rather than her individual family, but he was hardly convinced. She is the Parakoimomenos, or in common terms, the Elder of Intrigue. Previously you held her position. To her falls the duties of espionage, sabotage, and assassination.

"Archegetes. I have gained much information of use. In the Verdant South Old Cannibal and his two Devil Twin Concubines have wrought havoc on all but the Saber Palace. They seem to be aiming at a second strike. My personal suspicion is that they are merely preventing the raising of the southern Righteous Powers to prevent them bringing their forces in to end the current War. The Jingshen have returned their price on Spirit Stones to its norm - apparently they were negotiating for stronger guarantees from Strength Purity but they fell through. Lastly, the Gao Clan have returned to the front, along with more forces from Heavenly Time Shatter. A huge amount of power was being exerted on the Gemstone Justice Sect, and that was what forced out the Wei Princess."

Fourth came Destasia Duca, an Early Core Formation Elder. She is Chartoularios Tou Kanikleiou, or in simpler terms, the Master of Disciples. She picks out good seeds, gives training and assistance, and manages the core of the Clan Contribution Board for Qi Condensation and Foundation Building disciples in times of peace. She is flighty, friendly, and happy, and is well-known for her eyes she can use to befuddle or poison her enemies with, as well as her... unique approach to both life and cultivation.

"Archegetes.", she smiled. "If you pay me five hundred high-grade spirit stones, I'll have the money to take time off from my job so I can write more love stories!"

Manuel frowned at her.

"I would prefer you do your job, Elder Duca."

She shook her head.

"Your loss."

She pulled out of a sheet of paper and began to read.

"The disciples are doing well. The you-know-what in the blood is proving to be a powerful reagent, and I think we're going to get a lot more fifty-three seven over nine power out of our Qi Condensation disciples divided by eight when we-"

Manuel yanked the paper out of her hand. The report itself was simple, but she'd written equations up and down the sides.

"So everyone is doing well?"

She grinned.

"Perfectly. Honestly, this vi-"

She stopped for a moment and vomited out a wormlike shadow beast that dissipated into motes of dust after leaving her mouth.

"This you-know-what has a lot of potential applications!"

The other Elders looked at her, and Manuel sighed.

"Apologies. This is secret, at least for now. I am helping Destasia keep it so."

The woman had apparently cursed herself multiple times to prevent herself from giving up secrets, with various rituals in place to allow her to unlock the secrets. He was genuinely impressed - she knew she had no filter on her thoughts, and had acted accordingly. He'd assisted her with an additional Dao-empowered curse to keep the secret of the vial recovered from the Cloud Demon Cave.

------------------

Lastly was Heraclius Staurakius, a Great Circle Core Formation Elder. He is Protostrator, leader of your armies. One of your precious Core Formation cultivators in the Great Circle, Heraclius is ready to die.

Heraclius speaks, a gravelled voice coming from a throat that had been cut more than once.

"Archegetes. I will leave after this. I hope to settle my affairs. There are two juniors who can take up my role. Let me describe them for you..."

[ ] Olympiodora Rhangabe - Olympiodora is a quiet woman, and has grown quieter over the years. She is 500 years old, and in Late Core Formation already. Her talent is undeniable, and while her skills are unpolished, you believe she is more an unpolished jade than anything else. She picks up every skill she has with relative ease, and in time you think would make a formidable Protostrator. Of course, time can be very costly. She is competent in all areas of traditional Clan warfare, having excellent defensive skills, and is a skilled logistician. She comes from a more traditional school of thought, however, and is not so talented at the notion of projecting power past the Clan's borders.

[ ] Sheng Yu - A mere Mid Core formation cultivator, though with great talent at the age of 340. Driven and relentless, Sheng Yu is a brilliant offensive tactician and strategist, and has led several major raids into Jingshen territory aboard his scorpions. Logistically he will require some coaching - his appointment will mean a drastic increase in the effectiveness of raids and the like with a moderate drop in the Clan's overall ability to maintain a proper defense in depth in the event of total war. Ordinarily Heraclius would never recommend such a cultivator, but those who take an offensive posture in the Clan are few and far between, and Heraclius suspects such a stance might be more useful in the years to come.

Manuel frowns thoughtfully...

-----------
Currently the Clan has 30 Wealth.

The Clan will gain 15 Income, and lose 1 to Inefficiency, and 1 to Strength Purity Concessions for a total Income of 13 next turn.
-----------

What should the Clan focus on? (Outside of the war, which is of course your primary focus)

[ ] Building Bridges (Write-in target) - You should make more allies. Choose a target on the map and aim to have their relations with you increased. Give gifts, exchange assistance, aim for strategic marriages.

[ ] Intrigue (Write-in target) - You should learn about another clan entirely. Spend Spirit Stones like water in the plains and find out everything you can. Strengths. Weaknesses, places to strike, rebels, and so on and so forth.

[ ] Raiding (Write-in target) - Better to weaken an enemy. Send teams of cultivators to go raid an enemy for resources and to kill them where possible. Minor conflicts, with minor rewards. At best, you can seize minor territorial gains. This will worsen your relations, of course. Gains widely variable Wealth (0-10, excluding crits). May seize territory and gain Income in extreme cases. Loses Cultivators - around 5,000 Qi Condensation cultivators, 50 Foundation Establishment cultivators, and potentially 1 Core Formation Elder.

[ ] War (Write-in target) - Simply invade. Strike with all your might and seize territory. Kill cultivators. Requires your personal attention to prevent Nascent Souls simply obliterating your forces. Uses your personal Action for the turn. War will open a set of new sub-turns.

[ ] Increasing Wealth - More trade, more mines, more growth. Aim to find more Spirit Stones, tax more from traders, whatever works to increase your Clan Wealth. Increases Wealth by an average of 5.

[ ] Training Soldiers - Raising Disciples to higher Realms is all well and good, but training them to be perfect members of Formations is better. Ensure your Clan is trained and ready for war. Your readiness to go to war will increase significantly, though this fades over time.

[ ] Fortifying (Write-in territory, ally or vassal) - Spend Clan manpower and soldiers to build new fortifications against outside enemies. New Arrays, help train new cultivators in lesser Formations to defend their lands, and so on. Will also strengthen a vassal or ally if chosen, and increase relations with them. Increases defenses in the chosen territory, ally, or vassal.

[ ] Write-in

What will you do?

[ ] Hunt An Enemy (Write-In) - Why not? Hunt down enemies, see if you can kill someone. Usually used against an opposing Nascent Soul. Potentially very dangerous.

[ ] Weaken An Enemy (Write-In Faction) - Choose a faction, and use your Nascent Soul strength to simply sneak in and do damage. A little underhanded and shameful, but what do you care for the views of the Righteous Path? Potentially dangerous.

[ ] Assist A Faction (Write-in Faction) - Use your personal strength to assist an ally of some kind. Potentially dangerous.

[ ] Economic Activity - Carve arrays, scribe useful cultivation techniques onto scrolls, hunt down useful opportunities that might be dangerous to a Core Formation Elder. Make some money for the Clan.

[ ] Lecturing - You can simply lecture your many juniors on cultivation. Spend your time helping them grow, using less resources and ensuring better growth for the Clan.

[ ] Write-in

Purchases:

We have 30 Wealth saved. The Clan cannot go into debt - you can only spend what you have!

Casia Zimisce
wants to...

[ ] The Scorpion Wagons (5 Wealth)

"
Archegetes, Destasia's scorpion hordes have some value. They have been bred exceptionally well, and could be bred to serve as guards along the Scorpion Road as well as transports. I estimate this would let us shake another two or three Legions loose in times of trouble that could otherwise not be spared to guard the Road."

Kleisthenes Sarantapechos wants to...

[ ] Refound the Flood Dragon Gang (20 Wealth)

"Archegetes, let's siphon off a lot of our wealth and give it to Lady Yao. I know it's expensive, but with sufficient Spirit Stones she could easily refound the Gang, or at least a small part of it. A lot of them would come from people who love the Clan, and I suspect we might be able to lure her in to our orbit much more closely. I suspect she'll do so in the long-term anyway. It'll be incredibly costly, but a reliable long-term ally is worth a lot."

Xie Xinya wants to...

[ ] Suborn Righteous Disciples (6 Wealth)

"Archegetes, I would prefer to have a firm picture of the war in the Plains. With sufficient wealth invested, I should be able to use both spying treasures with other uses and simple bribery to keep our information networks far more up-to-date."

Destasia Duca wants to...

[ ] Build the Wasp Array (11 Wealth)

"I know, I know. Bees. Wasps eat them. So why not make giant puppet wasps that hunt down Devil Bees infiltrating our territory to kill them? It sounds crazy, but. The thing is that it's not."

Heraclius Staurakius wants to...

[ ] Create his Core Will (15 Wealth)

"I know, I know. It's not worthy of an old man to want to stay on. But with sufficient Spirit Stones I could send a Will of mine into an artifact, allowing it to advise my successor for some time. It'd last for a few centuries at most, but it'd shore up any deficiencies they have. It'd give me the energy my Will to think for some time, truly advising my successor at every turn, letting me teach them everything I know. It could even take on enough duties that we'd see no loss of efficiency due to the new Elder taking charge until they were entirely comfortable with their position."

This is wrong, I'm pretty sure. And, uh, by a lot.

From the previous turn:
-----------
Currently the Clan has 21 Wealth.

The Clan will gain 15 Income, and lose 1 to Inefficiency, and 1 to Strength Purity Concessions for a total Income of 13 next turn.
-----------
So we had 21,
[ ] Broadcast from the Mortal Artifact Network (6 Wealth)
[ ] Build the Scorpion Cavalry Brigade (8 Wealth)
we spent 14...

21-14=7

We then gained an extra 10 Wealth from the Raid.

So we should have 17 wealth leftover from the previous turn. Plus the 13 wealth per turn.

So we should have 30 Wealth ready to spend.
Aaaand I get ninja'd real fast, haha. Wow, okay then, that was fast.

[ ] Plan: We don't like having our wealth stat nerfed here
-[ ] Defer the payments (No cost this turn)
-[ ] Send the Clan's best Array-Engineers as well as several Legions to the Great Battlefield.
-[ ] Sheng Yu
-[ ] Building Bridges (Flood Dragon Gang) - You should make more allies. Choose a target on the map and aim to have their relations with you increased. Give gifts, exchange assistance, aim for strategic marriages.
-[ ] Grand Theft Spirit Stones (Jingshen Clan) - Choose a faction, and use your Nascent Soul strength to simply sneak in and steal a large quantity of resources. A little underhanded and shameful, but what do you care for the views of the Righteous Path? Increases wealth.
-[ ] Refound the Flood Dragon Gang (20 Wealth)
-[ ] Fix up your Inefficiency in administration (10 Wealth)

So basically the idea for this plan is to get rid of the minus 2 wealth a turn debuffs, we also are aiming to get closer with our allies in the Flood Dragon Gang so they can back us up if needed. Keep bullying... being good neighbours with the Jingshen Clan by relieving them of all that wealth of theirs before it causes them to do something rash.

[ ] Refound the Flood Dragon Gang (20 Wealth)
[ ] Repay the Hong Xuan (10 Wealth)

These are how I think we spent our wealth, clears debts and returns the Flood Dragons to strength even more tightly bound to us.

[ ] Send the Clan's best Array-Engineers as well as several Legions to the Great Battlefield.
[ ] Don't

These are harder. On one hand, removing concessions is good, and so is saving mortals. On the other, this is enough forces to actually meanfully effect the war... and do we want to help SPS when they are already winning? Blood Path does tend to to roll on momentum of how many mortals they can kill, after all. If we help the SPS snowball harder that can be long-term bad for us and plans to pressure the Jingshen... but also make it less likely they give Jingshen the guarantees they did?

Other options I'm unsure of, and willing to hear other suggestions.

She often complained about her lack of talent, and she and Manuel were reasonable friends. This friendship had suffered with her sister's death, however. Manuel felt that the next trials would prove key. She had avoided Manuel after the Trials, even moreso than usual. It was not rage, Manuel thought, but guilt at her judgement of him. He aimed to reach out to her again.
Wasn't this already there last turn? Should she not make up her mind? Or at least have this removed or changed?

Okay, wow. It's too bad that Gemstone, Ma and Bell managed to link up, that's going to hurt the NDA, making the war finish sooner.

I don't like that Jingshen's doing stuff we can't see, but at least it's within his core territories, rather than in the South we want to cut off.

Shen Yu... I liked his perspective in the Scorpion Raid chapter. We could definitely use someone good at raiding as we're stealing and denying as much wealth as possible from Jingshen. On the other hand, that's only going to last us a couple of turns until the Nascent race is won or lost. After that, we'd have the Bees and the Blacksmiths to raid.

Olympiodora is the better pick, I think. I'm worried about what will happen after the desert is won. We're going to be on the backfoot compared to the RP, we don't want to be an easy target. She's a defensive specialist, and I think we're going to have the time to train her up. We're mostly not going to be invaded over the next couple of turns as RP are busy and Jingshen wants to win through building up a Nascent instead of through actual ground warfare. We have a lot of new land, we're going to have a lot of even newer land, we're going to need to defend it to keep it.

And because of that, I think it would be safe to send a couple of legions and our array specialists up Northwest.

Paying 15 for Heraclius' holocron would be excellent, but I think people really want to restore the Flood Dragons(20) more. At which point we're looking at either repaying Hong Xuan(10), getting the Scorpion Wagons(5), or solving the inefficiencies in our Contribution Board(10).

So, the Green Bird and the Phoenix fight to the bitter end, and the Phoenix banishes him at the last.

That whole thing sounded like a very grueling and close-fought match, all around.
[ ] Repay the Hong Xuan (10 Wealth) - Your vassals will look on you more kindly - there are always demands, but showing your good faith keeps them in line. Trust is a necessity for those who seek to rule.

I feel like repaying the Hong Xuan, but that's not due to tactical or strategic thinking, but just because I'm the sort of person to dislike having a debt hang over me. So... That's basically just my feeling on it. Dunno if good idea or not.

But since I want to definitely refound the Flood Dragon Gang, then repaying the Hong Xuan too? Would mean we wouldn't be purchasing anything else this turn at all. I'm willing to do that of course, but.

I mean, I feel like... let's just do this? +1 Wealth per turn, and we aren't being menaced by the Trials, why the heck not do this? Yes, we might lose people, but still!

This is basically "help out an entire Friendly Sect: the option". This is great. Just... Having a more-friendly polity/nation/whatever-the-appropriate-word-is around? Just great. Plus, the more we help our friends, the more we get in return. It's a virtuous circle.

This is the option I want most to take.

I would like to be able to know what is going on in the Plains, yes. This is quite tempting.
[ ] Build the Wasp Array (11 Wealth)

"I know, I know. Bees. Wasps eat them. So why not make giant puppet wasps that hunt down Devil Bees infiltrating our territory to kill them? It sounds crazy, but. The thing is that it's not."
Heh, amusing. Doesn't sound very useful to me right now, but, it's amusing.

Actually Destasia, if we're breeding bees which are things that Wasps eat, then... Why not make them poisonous to the Wasps to eat, too? Or is that already included in the presumption?

:( I'm going to be sad to lose the old guy.

And, hmm, having no weaknesses for the new Protostrator is good... We're expecting or presuming war with the Jingshen in the next 100 years, yeah? So... Having an experienced Protostrator would be good.

Unfortunately, if we pick this, we can't pick Flood Dragon Gang. =/

Also: this is from the previous turn.
Second was Kleisthenes Sarantapechos, a Late Core Formation Elder.
Third was Xie Xinya, a Late Core Formation Elder.
Fourth came Destasia Duca, an Early Core Formation Elder.
And now?
Second was Kleisthenes Sarantapechos, a Great Circle Core Formation Elder.
Third was Xie Xinya, a Great Circle Core Formation Elder.
Fourth came Destasia Duca, an Early Core Formation Elder.
Two of them, Kleisthenes and Xie, have risen from Late to Great Circle! Huzzah! Destasia is still Early Core.

Oh, and the two potential War Elder replacements are Late Core and Mid Core respectively.

[ ] Sheng Yu - A mere Mid Core formation cultivator, though with great talent at the age of 340. It could even take on enough duties that we'd see no loss of efficiency due to the new Elder taking charge until they were entirely comfortable with their position."
So I would like to point out that these two options seem to be designed to synergize together.

With the Core Will there to pick up the slack we will still have our defenses well prepared for centuries to come even as we get an offense specialist. It gives us great benefits - at the cost of 15 wealth and being unable to fund the Flood Dragon Gang this turn.

P. S. Core Will will even pick up slack if we lose yet another of our Protostrators.
