    Welcome, one and all, to Equestria at War!

    First off, my thanks to @geckonator9 and @Teen Spirit for starting this bandwagon and inspiring my attempt. They've both been running HoI4 LP threads on SB, and I figured I'd throw my hat into the ring here. In case you haven't guessed, Equestria at War is a My Little Pony themed overhaul mod for Hearts of Iron 4, which just recently received its 1.3.1 update. Now, full disclosure here, I've never actually watched the show, but EaW is pretty much the most tightly designed overhaul available for the game at the moment, so I've been playing the hell out of it. I'll appreciate anyone chiming in if I miss something, or if they have anything to offer in regards to my lack of canon knowledge.




    Now, to start off, I'm going to be limiting potential starting countries to the major Equestrian powers. I plan to cover as many different paths and countries as you people are interested in, but I figure that focusing on the continent of Equestria to start out will help prevent a bad case of choice paralysis. Some countries have more content than others, after all, and if I added in all of Griffonia with its Balkanised chaos to choose from, we'd be here all week. Not to mention the branching paths for each country add in plenty of variety, even restricted to one continent.

    • Welcome, comrades, to Stalliongrad! When the incompetence of nobles and greed of capitalists caused a famine to sweep across the north-east of Equestria, the oppressed masses rose up! Under the leadership of Steel Stallion, they drove out their oppressors and founded a new, independent republic under the ideals of Equestrian Socialism, where all would truly be equal.



    Though Steel Stallion is no longer with us, his right-hoof pony Altidiya, a fellow veteran of the revolution, holds the reins as General Secretary of the SCP.




    However, all is not quite well. The north-east of Equestria has always been the poorest, and our industry reflects this. Furthermore, the chaos of revolution prevented us from solving the issue that caused it, and.... haphazard efforts at collectivisation, combined with bad weather and our mutual embargo with the Equestrian government, has caused the famine to linger. We should look to solve the issue once and for all, lest the people starve and panic.




    Our first efforts will be to start investing in infrastructure, in order to move food to the ponies and ponies to the farmland.




    However, the people cannot be motivated by need alone. They must be inspired! That is why work has begun on a great Palace of the Soviets, to house our government and rouse the masses.

    • Our army is… well, it's not good. The peasantry and proletariat, although motivated, were unskilled at fighting, and the majority of the army was unsympathetic to our plight. The reactionaries would have crushed the revolution had the Princess not caught wind of their actions and fired most of the generals involved.



    ...I feel like I'm missing something here. On the other hand hoof, I know what doctrine we'll be going down!


    Princess Celestia. The immortal Alicorn ruler of Equestria, she and her sister Luna manage the cycle of day and night. She preaches her virtues of harmony and peace, which seem to boil down to 'Let's all just be nice and get along and everything will work out.' Noble ideals, certainly, but little comfort to the poor, starving masses.



    Currently preparing to host the so-called 'Friendship Games', the Equestrian puppet state of the Crystal Empire is ruled by Princess Cadence. The Alicorn of Love, she made an impact when the Changelings attempted to use her wedding to Shining Armour to infiltrate Equestria, with the Princess and her groom driving them off with the power of their love.



    The Changeling Queen didn't take being punted off the side of Mount Canterlot very well. She returned to her wilderness homeland, and unified the numerous Hives into a single nation for the single purpose of vengeance against those who humiliated her. Now, she watches, eyeing her neighbors for vulnerabilities…



    Meanwhile, to our north, the former colony of Nova Griffonia is attempting to stabilise. Achieving their independence in the chaos of the Griffonian Empire's collapse 40 years ago, the new nation has not adapted well. With the frontier plagued by bandits, the economy sluggish, and the army riddled with authoritarians, it's only through the efforts of Governor Teafeather that the whole country hasn't collapsed. Hopefully nothing happens to her…



    We still have our own work to do. The people, although increasingly nervous, have not given up just yet. If we can manage to solve the problems plaguing our nation, we can rely on their total support.
     


    How precisely we solve these problems, however, is turning into an increasingly heated debate. Comrade Vasily and Comrade Altidiya have always disagreed on policy, and the looming possibility of national starvation has brought these disagreements to the fore. The party is splitting along ideological lines as their fiery debate draws more and more ponies to their respective sides.



    The Riverponies in Griffonia are having their own issues. But they're far away, let's not worry about them.



    Altidiya and Vasily continue their debates. Altidiya advocates for public involvement in the government and accusing Vasily of being a dictator in the making. Vasily responds by claiming that Altidiya's proposed policies would leave the country vulnerable to counter-revolution, and that the SCP should retain its tight control of the government.



    The Friendship Games have begun and ended without any problems. They went well, apparently, with Princess Celestia delivering a wonderful speech on the Magic of Friendship.





    Things have begun to come to a head. In party debates this morning, the discovery of a funding surplus in the budget triggered a massive argument. Altidiya wished to use the spare funds to deliver education and propaganda to the masses, encouraging the ponies to become more involved in politics and providing entertainment to boot. Valisy, stogy as ever, shouted her down, insisting that the funding should be used to improve the infrastructure further. There's only enough money in the budget for one option, so what shall it be? Bread or Roses?
