Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Murphy might be a useful asset if we were able to convince her to start working with Daedalus as a liaison and point of contact with the Chicago supernatural scene. Not sure how we would go about making that happen, or getting her to agree to it, but it seems much more likely and feasible than Harry himself ever cozying up to them.

Why? What about Daedalus makes you think they are worth it?
Yeah. For my part I like the idea of Daedalus, or at least some sort of strong entity working for normal mortals in the supernatural scene, but I can't let go of them blatantly breaking faith.

There's a lot of shady shit they could do that wouldn't completely destroy their credibility in my view, but the line is law enforcement knowingly and deliberately pressing false claims using the authority granted to them under the law.

If their integrity isn't rock solid they can't be trusted in a role with so little external scrutiny.

I would rather avoid them entirely, but if they're here to stay there might as well be someone who can interface with them directly as needed.

I'm not suggesting Murphy should sign up and try to become a Daedalus agent, of course, but rather that if she is able to get her job back as head of SI, she would be optimally placed to pass information to them, benefit from whatever information they may able to share, and maybe even mooch of their resources where possible.

EDIT: Also, as a muggle, Murphy is more likely to gain a greater degree of trust from the feds.

They have her listed as a collaborator/accomplice/henchwoman of the Lawgivers.

They don't and won't trust her.
I don't see how they expect to ever get any sort of reliable, timely information from any sort of supernatural faction or community if they aren't able to interact with someone who has some sort of ties to that community or faction.

As a career law enforcement officer who has been involved with many incidents of supernatural crime and knows members of the community, Murphy is well placed to be that sort of contact.

There are no potential alternatives who would not be considered collaborators or accomplices of the White Council simply because the WC has been the governing body for magic using Humans since well before Europe started colonizing North America. Any gifted Human living in the USA is by default under the authority of the WC, whether they like it or not. If Daedalus wants alternative options, they're going to need to work with a Fey or Vampire Court, the minions of a deity like Monoc Security, or something even worse from their POV.

The completely obvious solution to Murphy's career problems is to awaken her as a mage, and lobby with White Council to make her the Warden Commander of the greater Chicago area. Dresden is not suited for the job, and it allows Murphy to pursue criminals and fight evil.

EDIT: And it also solves (or, rather, increases) the tension she has with Dresden.

Unless you are a Solar, awakening normal people as Mages is a capital E-Endeavor that you need a 4-5 dots Exalted Crafting artifact for; while the thread, overall, seems to be pretty opposed to engaging with that mess.

Regardless, it isn't easy. Giving people sorcery dots probably going to start happening the instant DP allows custom charms, though. Legendary Scholar Cirriculum could be adapted to Wicked City or to Molly's own hell, should it lean toward academics and such.

Well when comes to cursing people in new and interesting ways Infernals beat even Solars. We could easily get him fired or even make it so nobody remembers he ever existed.
Rudolf is someone's catspaw.
We know the Red Court had leverage on him by Changes, and that he managed to falsify enough information to make the FBI raid Dresden's home. And he got away with it.

Regardless, he falls under the Tao of Gandalf: Dont be in a hurry to destroy people. And I dont think it would be good for Molly.

Besides, a known enemy catspaw is easier to predict, monitor and work around. If you eliminate them, the enemy will find a replacement who you will then need to locate all over again.
Just sic the cyberdevils to watch his financials and electronic communications, as well as any cameras in his home's vicinity.

Murphy comes from a multigenerational cop family.

Her father was a Chicago PD captain before he committed suicide, and its implied her two brothers are cops or cop-adjacent.
Her second ex-husband, who is now her current brother in law(dude married her younger sister), is an FBI agent, criminal division.
She knows people in the hierarchy of Chicago-area law enforcement, both local and federal, and they know her.

The way these people are talking about her suggests they dont even talk to their own fellow FBI agents in Criminal Division.

Its worth remembering that in Changes, she was on first name terms with Tilly, the special agent who raided Dresden's home.
And dude still didnt actually believe that vampires were a thing when they were literally invading the Chicago FBi building.
He thought they were cartel hitmen.

You might consider that might be the point.
Consider the real life war on drugs, and how the very real problem was used as an excuse to prosecute political goals.
To quote @veekie
Looking at the reports, definitely formed top down with budget and preset agenda, and only recently.

Their best intel is basically Harry's pamphlets, which plays up the scare factor, so that people don't seek out conditionally safe supernaturals(i.e. Benign fae being dangerous if you start incurring debts and favors, or the various beings that'd be perfectly safe if only you were familiar with certain archaic forms of etiquette). That says a lot about how long they've been operating(i.e. not long at all).

The reframing of everything into 'safe' science words also means disconnection from communities that use magical terminology...which isn't a surprise, considering the rest sounds like they recruited from STEM and military backgrounds.

This isn't a "we have a problem, so we gathered everyone with a clue" organization. This is a "we already know what we want to find out, so go find it." sockpuppet group.
Someone set up the Daedalus Group inside the FBI.
Despite the Library of Congress' Special Collections Division already existing and being clued in for decades.
There's an agenda in play, and we dont know what.

But I find it very instructive that the Librarians seem to be doing their best to keep any magical talents the Daedalus people get out of the field.

Awakening =/= trained wizard.

Dresden had almost ten years of training before he was considered minimally competent to operate as an adult; 10-16 years with DuMorne, and 16-19 years with McCoy. Molly became his apprentice at 17, and she was still an apprentice five years later when he died in Changes, at which point the Leanansidhe took over for around a year before she became Winter Lady.

So. Minimum five years training, closer to ten.
Then a couple decades of experience in magic law enforcement; Dresden already had already killed the previous Summer Lady by the time he was made regional Warden Commander, and it still took the decimation of the Wardens to make them recruit him.

And that assumes she awakens with the skills to be a seriousface combat wizard.

All true, but Dresden was also a criminal on parole. And she could be made Dresden's apprentice.

OK, let's see about that car. Vote closed.

Arc 4 Post 5: Bargain Hunting
Bargain Hunting

30th of July 2006 A.D.

The City of Chicago Surplus Auction Yard is a vast stretch of concrete and dusty metal as far as the eye can see, the only sliver of grass clinging tenaciously to the shadowed edges of the highway overpass to the west. And in this vast desert of vegetative and vehicular life one can find cars by the score baking in the noonday sun, dusty red pickups and roadsters whose flame decals seem more of a forlorn hope, a sort of automotive purgatory picked over by discerning vultures. Most of them are wearing suits in various states of tastefulness and style from 'mob goon getting his boss' ride back' to high powered exec down from the gleaming towers of JP Morgan or Bank of America looking to seem just a bit more high powered than they actually are. Who you don't see is almost as remarkable as who you do, no struggling families willing to settle for a car with a dark past and an unknown record to save some cash, no used car salesmen looking to cut a deal and then resell probably to the former folk.

No someone means to get their hands on a sweet ride and so they have put out only the fancy cars, chrome and silver gleaming in the bright sun, the very hot sun as it happens that makes you very glad to be carrying your own air conditioning around with you. OK so I have given a few bushes some frost damage brushing past small price to pay.

With a faint jingle the officer on duty. fifty-five going on dead-bored, lets you all in to a comfortable vista of... lawn seats. Well you have to give it to the city at least for democratizing the process of sitting perched on uncomfortable chairs in the scorching summer heat. Maybe it's the wave of cooler air you bring, maybe it's the piercings and torn jeans that fit in about as well as a bluebird in a flock of pigeons, but a lot of eyes turn onto you as you take your own seat and the little sign that reads 26. Thankfully the City of Chicago does not care who buys their surplus cars, even people a few months from their eighteenth birthday

But as you scan your fellow buyers to see who might have the deepest pockets and the greatest desire for a high end Mercedes Usum tugs at your attention, like a shadow on your mind. A familiar word echoes though your mind: 'pari'. There;s a vampire in attendance, one of those who does not mind the sun. Indeed if anything it casts the tanned complexion of the of the woman in question catching in golden hair so perfect it should be in a shampoo add.

As you notice her she notices you, nostrils flare in a sudden inhalation, green eyes open wide in recognition of power if nothing else. You do not say anything at first, after all you had just come here to spring Black Rider not start something with White Court, but then Black Rider does come up, the starting bid it twenty five thousand and she bods on him.

The auctioneer is going in five thousand increments. Not a lot of wiggle room with the fifty thousand cap you are working with.

What do you do?

[] Continue with the plan of Black Rider making himself seem like a bad buy, vampire or not the lady is not going to want to buy a money pit
-[] Write in stunt

[] Firmly indicate to the vampire to back off (Charisma+Intimidation DPE applies)
-[] Write in stunt

[] Let her win, you have no qualms stealing from the White Court, what are they going to do report the possessed car driving off?
-[] Write in stunt

[] Write in

OOC: A bit of a short update, but I figured it's an interesting enough stopping point given your plans and the charms Molly has.

Are they panicking because they have knowledge about us or because they can sense something about us?

Stunt: You put down $30,000 then glare at the vampire as if daring her to keep bidding. Your glare is undercut however when the air bags of black rider explode out and the alarm goes off. You glance at the car as if embrasured, but quickly return your glare at the vampire as if daring them to question your financial decisions.

It combines both approaches and if anything makes us even more scary in making them worry how we might lash out to cover our embarrassment.

@DragonParadox is the weather hot enough that we are sweaty enough to trigger BSM?

We prolly don't actually particularly desire earning enemies in the white court.
Which is why we should warn her away, instead of stealing it later. Besides, legalizing the ownership afterwards would be way too much effort.

-[X] Continue with the plan of Black Rider making himself seem like a bad buy
-[X] Use Intimidation excellency
-[X] Stunt: The movement of your arm as you indicate your bid is sharp enough to cut the air. The glare you direct at the would-be competition is sharp enough to cut a soul; and that's barely a metaphor. Airbag explosion which punctuates your actions is a fitting acoustic accompaniment to the blow delivered by your wordless message: "Back away".

It would except Molly is walking around with a constant aura of frost. She can never really get that hot anymore.

There is a reason not to walk around dripping water from you wet clothing everywhere. Perma BSM needs support, Molly isn't going to do it until we deal with all minor problems that BSM activation conditions involve. Aesthetics, leaving liquids everywhere, so on.

I mean, we could always bring one of those mister spray bottles that people use on themselves when it's hot. Not like it would raise suspicion. But really, we don't need the extra boost. Even without the Excellency, stunt brings us to 9 dice at -2 difficulty. She only has 7 willpower dice from the rolls. Add the extra 7 dice from the Excellency and we basically flatten her in social combat.
